[Q] Moving ROM from SD to another - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi,
I have question , I installed the a NAND ROM using 4GB SD card but I need more space so I purchased new SD with 8GB space.
How can I transfer the part of ROM installed on the SD from the old one to the newly purchased one without losing any data.

If I were in your shoes, I'd make a full backup of my Current ROM with the old sd in. Then, I'd insert the new card and restore the back up. (of course after making the required partition).

The phone will not hang if you've got the ROM correctly on NAND. Also, try making both partitions primary, and windows on the pc will not be able to read the ext partition.

Why are you removing it while the device is on?
You should do this:
Keep Original SD card in
Boot Phone into CWM and make a back up
After it finishes, Turn off phone, put old sd card in PC, copy recent back up there, remove old and put new sd in pc and copy the back up to it
After making the partition on the new sd, put it (the new card) in your phone and boot up
Go to CWM, and restore your recently made backup
after it's done, reboot phone normally
Also, do not remove the sd-card while the phone is active ..
Because we, eu users, need some system files to be on the card and by removing it the device may become inoperative .

Sorry for late response.
Are you sure you are setting the exact partitions on your sd-card with the same settings?

SD Card Problem

Ok well I removed my sd card from my G1, and when I put it back in it gives me a "Blank SD Card" notification. I tried resetting my G1, and it didnt work. So I mounted it on my laptop and now it says "Drive G is not formatted would you like to format now?." I am really not trying to lose all my data and apps, and I kno my stuff didnt get deleted, how can this b fixed?
One of two ways, in my eyes.
First try looking at paragon, it might be able to find the partitions again and hopefully repair them.
Two try a data recovery program, personally I like GetDataBack but it only works for FAT and NTFS and not EXT2 if your data and apps were on that partition.
Hmm I tried GDB and it took about an hour and what do u kno I need the licensed version to get my files off, and will Paragon work? Cuz I dont wanna waste another hour.
SD Card fix ok
just put the sd card inside the adapter that all sd card brings when you get it.ok
AND than insert it on your labtop and copy all your files to your computer and format your sd card..

Have you tried inserting the sdcard into a computer running ubuntu? It will probably recognize the ext partition without any trouble.

I dunno, that's why I asked if you had tried it yet or not. You can always burn a Ubuntu livecd and test it without installing anything. As long as the partition table is intact it should be accessible.

I loaded up Cyanogen's latest last week, formatted my 16gb to EXT2 and Fat32... all was working great for a week, then today, my G1 went blank. Upon a restart, the SD card came up with "Blank SD Card." Viewing the card from my card reader... can't read any files... what's the program that you "found?" I'll probably just fight through reformatting and rebuilding all my files... Later I'll perform file backup when I get it right.
this sound like your problem??
Hey asaspades, something like this happened to me a while back and I could read it on my laptop/cardreader and recover my files and reformat. Obv u have tried this. The thing is the same thing has hsappened not 10 min ago lol. When this happened before I was running my g1 as stock but now I have cyanmod (3.6.8.1 I think) amd apps 2 sd on ext2 partition. I am not at a computer atm but will try to recover the same way as before though I won't be able to access the ext2 partition (will try with ubuntu, hav wubi installer on pc). Oh and I rebooted after I realised something was wrong and now have a constant preparing sd card checking for errors notification. This sound kinda similar to your problem at all? I would like to know what is causing this. Maybe I just have a bad/corrupted sdcard lol. Anyway its really pissin me off not knowing
Left 4 a while and it now says damaged sdcard you may need to reformat.

Can't mount USB

It's the second time this has happened. I'm not sure what I did the first time to fix it.
Basically, when I try to mount my SD card via USB it tries to - but then fails and goes back to "preparing SD card" on the phone. It never shows up on the PC.
I'm running Gumbo 1.5C with kernel.
I tried going back to my RUU image/formated SD and start over but the problem still persists. The card is partitioned for Apps2SD. If I need to format the card can someone provide instruction to either move whatever is installed on the SD card back to the phone or how to back up the SD card so I wont have to clean everything up again.
Would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Did you try using the SD card in a different device?
Does the phone let you store on it?
Can you install new Apps?

No, I don't really have another device to try it in... but it does work. The card does mount through the Recovery USB toggle. It just doesn't mount through the OS.

I can try another one when I get home but the problem is I wont have any of the apps that were installed on the SD card.
What I did just try is "unmount" the SD card on the phone so it looks like I'm about to remove it - then restart. It's still not working. I kind of want to say that the problem arose when I pulled my phone off the USB cable while the card was already mounted - to answer an important phone call. I'm just not sure how to replicate or undo the problem.

This will kill it every time.
The best thing to do is go into recovery make a back up of the EXT partition - theres an option for it some where. Mount the card in recovery copy the backup to the desktop. Power the phone off swap the SD card. Partition it with the EXT partion. Mount the new card as USB in recovery copy the back up to it (make sure you keep the original folder path exactly the same). Restore the EXT back up. *catches breath*
Maybe this will work for you. I had a very simliar issue destroy my 16gb. It was sadening those things aren't cheap.

I may give this a shot later, I just want to wait to see if anyone else has a solution. The reason being; this has happened to me before. About 2 months ago. I think I fixed it by changing to a different ROM... which is not what I want to do now. I like the speed I had now. There must be some haywire code that gets corrupted if I dismount improperly considering the SD card is still fully functional.
And... Bump.

see post #5, give it a try and then report back? I would like to know how that works.
This wont work for me. When I orginally installed WP7 my Scandisk microSD card did not format, so I have no memory left on my phone. Its running the software with SD card right now. So I need to reinstall it, and I just want to see if all i need to do is put it in USB flasher and reinstall, or do i need to back all the way to the orginal rom and start from the begining
No you shouldn't have to start all the way over. Just take batt out and back in and turn on then hold end key (red) untill the magldr menu shows up then select option 5 I think it is. Then connect phone to computer and click on the DAF file from your ROM file.
make sure your SD Card is in before doing this. WP7 formats it automatically.
Does this help?
quick change
Have you tried the simple method...
go to settings > about
click [reset your phone]
when the phone powers off, swap the SD cards
the phone will reboot and format the new card.
your OS is on NAND, but is using the card as part of the opperatign space.
Good luck.

[Q] Would this work - Reflashing

Just had a though and wondered if anyone had tried it.
We know when we take a sim card out and boot up WP7 it boots as if it a virgin install.
So my question is if we were to reflash the phone with a second sim card can we then insert the original sim card after the install completes to save us losing all the data and settings?
Has anyone tried this?
EDIT: I meant SD Card not sim card
No replies
If anyone is going to install the new rom would it be possible that you could insert a second sim when reflashing and after the flash it complete reinsert your old original sim and see if it works and keeps your old settings?
If not it will only need a reset to reformat the original sim so nothing to lose in trying this, I would try myself but I have too much on my sim to lose at the moment and cannot try until weekend as I need my phone through the week.
Thanks

whoops, didnt mean to hit thanks! oh well, one for your collection!
from my point of view it wont work, the SIM being there or not wont make the blindest bit of difference when you flash it, the installer will wack anything on the SD card, which is the only place that could keep the data intact
if your looking for backup wait a while, Windows phone device manager will soon have a backup program built in to it, your phone will need to be unlocked as its not MS supported but other than that it should backup you data and your app data allowing you to flash to your hearts content, and keep your data.
i dont know if it will install apps again though, i suspect not, but its progress!
You got a thanks back
What I meant was, if you power down your WP7 and remover the sim the phone boots up perfectly but none of your contacts are there or emails and preferences.
If you the power down and re insert the sim your phone boots up as normal with all your settings.
So if we reflash using a different sim card the after the flash is complete, power down the phone remove the sim card and replace it with the one you were using before the reflash, would it not use the setting stored on the older sim card?
I have the manager registered so will use that when its out but this was just an idea and wondered if anyone has tried it.
(power down your phone and remove the sim and power up and you will see what my logic is )

ahh, yes now that makes a lot more sense!
ill check, i plan on reflashing on sunday to update to NoDo, i need to backup all my app data first just incase so it will need to wait until then, you would probably need to make sure the old SD card was the same size as the new one, just incase it checks that out.
It won't work... I bought some SD cards last week and swapped them out and if the info on the phone doesn't match the info on the card, it won't keep the info each time you restart...
For instance, if you insert new sd, get the green theme like a new phone, change to orange theme, turn phone off and on, it goes back to green as its still looking for original card...
Thanks for letting us know, its a pity as it would make reflashing so much easier
Technically it won't work anyway as the sdcard would be part of the raid set that wp7 makes. You cannot just take data from one raid set and add it to another.
The sdcard in wp7 is not just used as additional storage it is treated as one big lump.

now that isnt quite true,i say quite because doing this doesnt means its just takeing it from the SD card but the idea is the same, ive done a manual backup of the data from the SD card, visible through Windows phone device manager, ie, ive gone through the application folder and copied the IsolatedStore of the programs i wanted to keep the data for.
it does mean that i still need to install the app, but i can just copy the IsolatedStore back to the correct folder which will give back all the data and original settings before the reflash.

[Q][HD2][NativeSD] Cannot find external SD in camera app

Hi,
I intended to post this question to the [3.Nov.2012][ROM] NexusHD2-JellyBean-4.1.2-CM10 V1.2 [NativeSD] thread, but not allowed to (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32624318)
Can someone help me redirect the question? Thanks!
First thanks for the great ROM, tytung. It looks great and easy to install.
I have a HD2 and wanted to dual boot WP7 and Android. Found this new method NativeSD and decided to try it. But once I installed the ROM (through MAGLDR 1.13 and Recovery 4Ext 2.2.7), everything works fine, except that the camera app (and other apps) says that it cannot find the external SD card to save the pictures. It does not give me options to save on phone. But since both system and data are on external SD, and that partition is treated as /mnt/sdcard0, I am not sure if I am supposed to have an external SD card from the perspective of Android.
Cannot seem to find similar post with this issue, so I must be doing something wrong with partitioning. Could you help??? Thanks so much! I am inches away from having a great Android JellyBean experience on my HD2.
Thanks!!!
-----------------------------------
Details:
4 partitions on my 16GB SD card:
1) FAT32, 3GB (this is the boot partition, where I installed Recovery 4Ext and through it, installed the boot files in /NativeSD)
2) Ext4, 8GB (this is the system/data partition, where installation put all Android files)
3) Ext4, 2GB (this is current empty, reserved for another ROM that requires two partitions)
4) Other, 2GB (this is a WP7 partition)
I formatted these using Mini Partition Tool on Windows (not via Recovery 4Ext)
I think you need to run CHKDSK on your FAT32 partition of the card with fix option, once, using a card reader and computer. Once done, put the card back to your phone and boot to your preferred Native SD rom. Then check whether you applications are able to trace the SD card. Should work, since the same worked for me, when I had a similar issue. Hope that helps.

Hi dheerajk27, thanks for your quick reply. Was wondering
1) should Android JB think that I have an external SD?
2) where will this external SD be mapped to? The Fat32 partition? The same Ext4 partition as system & data?
3) what would chkdsk do? I just want to make sure that it doesn't mess up the Win 7 stuff as well.
Thanks!
Hi braveliquid, welcome to the forum.
Did you set all your partitions as primary using minitool?
1. yes
2. depends photos/music => fat part, apps=>ext part
3. not sure either

Thanks for your reply. Upon multiple trial and error, I found out that the logical partition is the culprit. When I have 3 primary (FAT32, Ext4, Ext4), Android can recognize the ext SD card. However, when I have 3 primary and 1 logical (the Win Phone 7 partition is made logical by windows), then Android does not recognize the ext SD card anymore.
Any thought on how I can resolve this? Or else I will have to keep 2 SD cards, one for WP7, and one for Android. Doable, but a bit of a hassle.
Thanks!
use minitool and set your wp7 partition as primary too.
Problem solved.
you could use two cards, i am at the moment (I keep spare card in a cellotape pocket on inside of battery cover). You can also dual boot without partitioning see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34009754&postcount=1126 but only really as a backup phone in case wp7 goes wrong and you are away from pc.

Thanks Robbie. Yes, I have set the WP7 partition as primary and then it works! I am liking the Android experience (have been using iPhone).
Btw, in WP7, it is asking me to update software (I have a very old WP7 installation, migrated to dual boot in early 2011 i think). Can I just upgrade WP7 like normal (i.e. by connecting to Zune)? Or will that destroy MAGLDR? If that won't work, how can I upgrade WP7 to 7.5 or later 7.8? I cannot use Windows Market Place apparently with the old WP7 OS.
Thanks again!

I would just flash one of the new wp7.8 roms, your choice which. Ansar's does not seem to be able to use the new wpbackup app at the moment.
With Hd2o and pdaimatejam you can backup your phone and restore apps sms calls etc. Sooo much better for trying out new roms.
