Hi just wondering if anyone know what is the max size video file the SGS can play?
Tried playing a 1.6gb 1280x720 wmv but when i went to play it it said not supported.

Probably the specific codec used in that file. 720p files aren't a problem for it to play.
(Supported: DivX, XviD, MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV, VC-1
format: 3gp(mp4), AVI(divx), MKV, FLV, H.263Sorenson)
Not so much the size but the codec yeah... Even with wmv's of 150mb or so I often get messages that they aren't supported.
You might want to try RockPlayer, it has played everything I've thrown at it so far...
Played 2.2GB 1280X720MKV.
The file size limit is FAT32 limit, 4GB. If android reads NTFS (didn't check yet), then there isn't any file size limit.

Yeah, seems to be... look it up in the market (You'll need the ARMv7 for the galaxy s)
Anyone tried playing a 720p video they've recorded on their galaxy in rock player? When I've tried it, its been shocking, like watching slow motion. Plays perfectly in the standard video player.

on my touch pro ive had no need for watchin super high res videos but with the hd2's screen i figure why not.
do free players support mkv files and do they actually play without stuttering?
I dunno about 720p files without studder but it might do it, depends on how well it was encoded.
On my Fuze I have played some MkV files on Coreplayer as well as FLAC and OGG without issues.
Easy answer - no.
If you want best quality, recode them to 800x480 MP4.
But if you're into series, the standard xvid versions already play beautifully.

I used Handbrake for encoding files into MKV and MP4 to play them in TCPMP. The best results i had with MKV, more sharp, more brighness and they´re running without breaks.
so for 800x480 what other video settings did you pick for mkv to have it play perfect? i got a bit of stutttering on the file i tried today

Xvid is easier on the processor than H264 so you will get better results with it, just up the bitrate to 2Mbps+ and it'll look better than the the 750kbps H264, and it'll play faster as well.

did you know that even G4 Cpus cant handle 720p Perfectly!
also, there is absolutely no reason to watch a 1280×720 resolution file on a screen that is only 800x480.

This phone should be able to handle 720P, I mean my old i8910 (600Mhz CPU, 256MB RAM, native DivX/Xvid support) could play most 720P I threw at it, so certainly the hardware isn't the main issue here...
m720p mkv's converted to mp4 using winmenc (and the audio sync fix to counteract the hd2's sync problem) and playing on windows media player looks great
hmm, do you have soo many 720p sources? i play normal tv shows and movies as divx or xvid DVD quality, and that plays perfectly....

hehe...for sure you can't play 720p mkvs on the i8910.
what video types are supported on the n1?
if needed, if tehre some converter to "convert" the files on comp to what can be used on the n1?
Natively, mp4. Can be encoded using Handbrake.
If you download Rock Player though, it can play just about any file type.

i tried copying over avi, mkv, mp4, and rmvb. i got rockplayer too (was just lookin around market adn that was the first thing that popped up that sounded nice). everything by the rmvb was choppy. they all play find on the computer.
both the mkv and mp4 are 720p. the avi was 640x272. not sure what size the rmvb was. imma try recoding them with that one program mentioned above and trying again

be sure you have the right version of rockplayer running, their were three variants. Also, something that has a 720p resolution might be too strenuous for the nexus to handle, remember the nexus can only play up to a 480p resolution, it can play 720p but it wont benefit any vs a 480p version of the same clip.

I converted a 1080p video of iron man with Freemake to .mp4 format which eventually has a size of 3.19 GB. converted for android with a resolution of 800 x 480. It just doesn't want to play the damn video does anyone know how to fix this problem? G-force not in HD is played perfectly however it has a much smaller size.

What video player are you using? have you tried rockplayer?
No no rockplayer however the standard video plaer should play .mp4 and it does for G-force however the HD video of 3.19 GB doesn't play how can this be?
maybe the encoding has not worked properly, or codecs are missing....
maybe you can try to download rockplayer from the market (it is free) and then play the files (I've had one file not play on the normal player, but it played perfectly on rockplayer.
When playing .mp4 the codes used should be h264 for the video and aac for the audio streams. The .mp4 is just the type of the container.

Currently the DHD can't even play 720p .mkv videos
It will never be able to play 1080p, but 720p .mkv is certanly possible.
I hope when VLC finishes it's port to Android it will support hardware playback of .mkv on our phone
BTW The best player availible now is either Rockplayer or Vplayer (paid) if you're looking for stability and performance.
I have some 720p MKV videos with H264 video AAC audio that I wanted to load onto my Xoom, so far I haven't been able to get it playing smoothly at 720p with mp4 H264 and AAC audio but Mpeg4 seems a little blocky.
Does anyone have any suggestions on FormatFactory (or some other mass conversion tools) settings I can use that gives me the best video quality at a good frame rate?
from how i understand it the Tegra 2 has issues playing high profile H.264, i had a notion ink adam for a week and it was the same thing on this as well.
when i get my wifi xoom ill test it but i expect the same results.
I loved my zoom but I think that's one of the most unacceptable situation for zoom. good amount of people bought zoom is for video play back. at the least, if you should be able to play anything you throw at it. I hate apple but that's one I cannot trash the ipad

In Windows 7 it tells me with a lot of file extensions that they are not compatible but I ignore the message and copy them anyways. Then they play nicely on the Xoom. I've used .m4v, .mp4, .mkv, .avi.... just ignore the error message and copy the files. Then use Rock Player Lite to play.
i don't know about the format factory, i download a free version of a xoom video tool, it recommend the h.264 mp4, size: 1280*752, frame rate:30fps, bitrate:1500
The above parameters are just for your reference, sometimes, video playback quality also is based on your xoom player.

In the first place, i help u find the formats that xoom support.
Audio Playback Supports: MP3, AAC, ACC+Enhanced, OGG, MIDI, AMR NB, AAC
Video Playback Supports: MPEG-4， H.264，H.263
u need to convert your mkv to mp4. i use Fox Real Xoom video converter and set the parameter is mp4, h.264, 1280*752, 1500kbps, 30fps, and i can get full screen on the xoom.
so i suggest u also set on Formatfactory according to the parameters. hopefully it can help u!

i used a free version of a tool which named xoom video converter, but there is a logo "foxreal" in the centre of the screen. at last, i took about $23 to buy a official version, now everything is ok.
Just a heads up - noticed a app I had not seen on the market before, MX player. Codec pack with specific support for the Tegra chipset, and so far it has done a *great* job with a few different formats I have thrown at it. Have not tried 720 or 1080 yet, but I think this one is worth checking out.

Nice interface, no scarring/blurring. I was looking for a good video player (to go with my shiny 32GB SDHC) -- much appreciated.

Downloading a 720 and 1080 sample in mkv now for testing, will report back.
[update] 720 was great - smooth and nice.
1080 was a nightmare, dropping frames like mad.

I assume the sample files you downloaded are H.264 and then you need to know if they're baseline-, main- or high-profile. Just saying 1080p drops frames like mad is not enough. Then again, even the stock player plays 1080p just fine if it's baseline-profile, so I'd say whatever you were playing wasn't baseline. And well, Tegra2 simply does not have the beef to play non-baseline 1080p, it's simply too demanding.
Just like Moboplayer it doesn't show the subtitles in my .mkv file nor does it scale the anamorphic aspect ...

imho both this MX and MoboPlayer are on par, very useful where MoboPlayer is ad-free!
Still haven't found a solution for playing AC3-audio-encoded MKV/AVI files. Either no sound at all or stutter when soft-decoding ...

Thanks so much, WereCatf! I am actually a little behind the times when it comes to HD video formats and how they work, that helped make some sense of it. So I am assuming if i have non-baseline 1080p I can just convert it for the Iconia?

Yeah, Handbrake works fine for transcoding things. I'm just in the middle of our guild raid in WoW, but I can post Handbrake settings for both 720p high-profile and 1080p baseline-profile in two or two-and-a-half hours.
But do keep in mind that if you're just watching the video on your tablet, not on a big screen via HDMI, then there's no point in watching 1080p at all because the tablet screen is only 720p resolution. You'll save storage space if you transcode to high-profile 720p in that case.

Video and audio still out of sync when I play my 720p mkv files. I'll stick with mobo since its ad free.
Great find to the OP. I just played an h264 sample 720p mp4 in hardware decode mode with MX player, and while it dropped very few frames, Rock Player absolutely refused to play it.

Thanks! Have really been enjoying this player, Rock Player and mobo player have choked at so many files I've thrown at it - while Mx player seems to have no issues with them.
Thanks to Werecatf - i have used Mx player to output 1080 via HDMI out via this player with very few dropped frames - everything looks great.
To those of you annoyed by the ads - assuming you are rooted - just install a ad-blocker. From the market, "ad free android" works fantastic for me, free package, I have not seen a single ad since I installed.

Strange - played quite a few 720p files without this problem. Sorry to hear it. Does mobo player work without these sync issues? All i get from moboplayer is force closes and erratic behaviour - no idea why.

for subtitle I just burn in when I encode using the handbrake...
works just fine.
Moboplayer works great for me. I like mxplayer, but mobo has a nicer UI, IMHO.
