What RECOVERY is everyone using? - EVO 4G General

Just Curious. I think I am using "evorecovery". The one that is used to root my phone if that makes sense.

I'm using AA Recovery (Alcoholics Anonymous)
Just kidding
Using the same one as you.

Amon-ra

I'm using Amon Ra.

amon-ra here too..

Clockwork because of Rom-Manager

Amron-ra here too, anyone who used the evo recovery img is running Amron unless they changed it to ClockWork after their initial nand unlock.

clockwork

Forget about what ppl are using. Which one is the best? How easy is it to switch?

Amon RA seems to be suggested as the one to use when others fail. so, i just use it.
it is very easy to install and use.
(by the way... press vol + & - to 'go back one screen'...that seems to really muss folks up)

If you want to do a lot of swapping between different roms, I think Clockwork is the way to go. That being said however, there have benefited some compatability issues with Clockwork and some of the roms. You can find more information in the development forum.

I use Amon-ra
But i often switch to Clockwork
The only problem with clockwork is that is has problems doing a complete wipe

The "Evorecovery" is actually the Amon_RA recovery. Toast took Amon_RA's source and modified it a little and made it the default recovery when you do the Part 2 of the root hack.
I use the same recovery, I prefer Amon_RA's recoveries over all others; but that's just me.

ClockworkMod just because it is default in ROM Manager.

I have Amon RA's Recovery because it was suggested for Fresh & DamageControl to get the 'Themes' to install correctly.

I have Amon Ra's recovery as well.

I just realized that I am running Ra dream v1.5.2 recovery rom and there are newer versions out.
Now should I upgrade and is it worth it?

Absolutely! The newest version supports sd-ext partitions.
I would even suggest you try out ClockWorkMod's recovery.
Just install Rom Manager from market and flash through that.
Alright =]
So what is the latest image? And is rom manager safe?

Well I flashed to the clock recovery rom and it didn't boot into recovery mode so I then flashed to RA 1.7 and it works fine.
So is there a big difference? Is the clock recovery better than amon RA?

clockwork recovery allows you to use the Rom Manager app to manage your backups, rename backups, download and flash rom updates (such as CM 5.0.8) and it automatically informs you of any new recovery updates (which are VERY frequent). The only problem is that if you use the MyTouch you need to know which one to install. The three recovery options are:
MyTouch 3G/Ion (for 32B and Fender/1.2 devices)
MyTouch 3G/Magic (for 32A)
Dream/G1
If you flash the wrong one you will not have access to recovery.
So I reflashed to the clock recovery rom and I like it better than amon RA. Thanks for all your help.

Have in mind that ClockWorkMod & Rom Manager are under heavy development and get updated frequently. Occasionally after a flash update you might not be able to get into recovery so always test it.
If the first flash fails don't worry just reflash the same recovery (2nd flash works every time)

Possibly bricked MyTouch Black non-1.2

After putting a new kernel on my device running cm 6 RC1 and supposedly clockworkmod recovery latest, I now do not have a working phone as it stops at the mytouch screen and does not go further, only thing available to use is fastboot which to my dismay, I am having the perfect spl error (remote: not allow), any insight in this problem would be much appreciated.

Just reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery and flash a new rom and the old kernel
Clockwork recovery sometimes doesn't flash correctly through rom manager. Try downloading among RA's recovery and doing "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". You will need an engineering spl though.

Something went wrong. I don't know why all you new android nubs have to use "clockwork or "sp" recovery. A good ol Recovery image like Amon Ra's latest 1.7.0G works great. Anyway, you didn't brick the device. Just try re-flashing or flashing another rom. (one you know for a fact works) Oh, if you did a nandroid backup, I suggest you restore it. And if you can't get into "clockwork" recovery upon boot. Then I suggest you do what @caedus90 advised and flash Amon RA's recovery through ADB.
Hope this helps. And stop using those idiot friendly recovery alternatives. =P

OMG...I feel so dumb right now...I don't know why I didn't just stick with Amon's recovery...I got curious too and try to use Rom Manager to play around and now I am stuck as well...but my case is a little different in that I cannot get into recovery BUT my phone still boots right into Android like normal...
I flashed Amon's recovery via Rom Manager but still cannot get back into recovery...flashed ClockworkMod recovery but still no recovery...
So advice, please...I think I've learned my lesson and stay with the manual work from now on...lol...I was totally fine with Amon's recovery too...guess my curiosity will kill the cat eventually if I don't wise up...
What's the best way to get recovery back? I have Cyanogen's CM6 on my mt3g 32b...Much thanks for any advice...
UPDATE: Just thought I let you guys know that I was able to get Amon's recovery to work again by keep trying the reflash while in Rom Manager thanks to a tip from another member...Last time I'm touching Rom Manager...It's not a bad program, just us users who are causing problem...

You can try 3 different methods. First try flashing cwm3.0 twice from rom manager before rebooting. Second under the advanced options choose erase recovery before flashing new recovery. Third flash the recovery as a PC36IMG

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Stop using ROM Manager and do everything in Hboot or recovery.
The ONLY thing I use ROM Manager for anymore is to fix permissions.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/PC36IMG-1.zip
Remove the -1 in the name, place the file on the root of your sdcard, and then flash in the bootloader.

You have to do it through a terminal emulator. Instructions in the link below:

Rom manager only works so much and does more harm then good

I don't know if I agree with that statement. ROM Manager has a lot of great features and a lot of utility, but flashing one Recovery over another is something it's not doing successfully right now.
ROM Manager has only one GREAT feature; Fixing permissions. Everything else is suspect to creating problems. Flashing recoveries should be done in Hboot, the right way, not short-cutting via some semi-useless apk.

Have faced this problem quite a few times. Usually when ROM manager comes packaged with the rom I just flashed or when I am playing with the apps2sd commands. Reinstalling RM did it for me every time.

Very opinionated statement based on hear say. Totally disagree.
Reinstalling rm multiple times didn't help me either.I guess gonna have to use Amon RA from here on now on. I used rom manager for all my flashing didn't have single problem until I flashed Amon RA

Of course not. RM revolves around CWM. Which is inferior to AR, btw....

ROM Manager has issues flashing one recovery over another. Hence the need to use a terminal emulator as the instructions I linked explain.

Go to
http://www.mediafire.com/?5otzpnt2ld1lmdo
to download the PC36IMG file for clockworkmod. Change the file name to PC36IMG and put on the root of your SDcard. Boot into the bootloader and accept the update. See if that works for you.

That's kind've odd, because it always restores mine 100%
But then, I have TB and keep current backups of every app w/ Data so I can restore them at will.

Glad that I could help you restore your clockwork, although I prefer using Amon Ra myself. I came across more issues using clockwork, especially when using Rom Manager.

[Q] I did a baaad thing with clockwork recovery.

I installed a custom ROM that came with the rom manager app. Being curious, i clicked it. Something happened, and I booted into recovery. Previously I have had Amon Ra recovery, and now I have clockwork. WHAT HAVE I DONE??? Is this bad, or should I just go with this new recovery. Thanks in advance.

All you did was install clock work, personally I prefer AmonRa on G1, since it has the sd partition setting. CWR is newer so you might as well use it, when you get a newer phone I recommend 4EXT recovery.
Thanks for the fast reply. So I should probably just put AmonRa though fastboot?

That will work but both recoveries do the same basic things. No real advantages, unless you need the Amon_Ra specific features; don't forget CWR has some newer features since Amon isn't updated anymore.
