Everyone will be able to create apps soon.
Forget the 1 Billion apple apps, Google will get a Gazillion!
http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/about/
I have 6 great ideas (I think) written down ready to go. LOL. Hope I get an email back soon.
I'll give it a try
now we get even more trash in the market.
How to try it??
I don't think the Market can really get any more trashed. At least these apps ought to be well-designed under the hood and won't FC all the time. I'm eager to see what non-devs come up with.
And if this does cause a further flood of "useless" apps into the Market, it'll spur Google to make it easier to filter the Market, I hope.
dont all of you be so quick to judge. I taught myself how to program code..but I still dont know how to program AND make the userinterface. This will be a great tool for me since now I will just have to drag and drop textboxes and butons instead of trying to figure out how to code them into the app. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there like this.
forget making my own app, where can I get that Hellopurr apk!
You have to sign up for the opportunity to get this in the future. You can't just go and download it right now.

Agreed, its painful to create the layout xml by hand. Eclipse and droid-draw help, but AppInventor looks a lot more advanced.
This looks amazing. I hope that we'll be able to edit the underlying java code... That would make a GREAT starting point for lesser coders like me, wanting to get the ball rolling fast on Android, or even with prototyping UIs.
I'd also like to take a crack at this, while my Java is improving I've got much more background in Visual Basic which this seems pretty similar too. Seems like a great learning tool, although I also worry about 10 million TEST.apk's hitting the market. Hopefully someone will get it soon and it will hit the torrents.

Its a web app. The only downloadable part of this is software that lets your android phone communicate with the browser, and thats already available from the website. You need a beta invite to use the actual "inventor"
Someone already got a mail from them?
IMO should have an "experimental" label on them until x amount of downloads and a minimum X amount of stars on them.
It will increase the total number of android apps yet wont flood the market with more garbage.
P.S 80% of apps are trash or repeats. Doesnt matter what the OS is. You dont have 50-200,000 apps and have most of them be quality.

Agree, it's not like Iphone has more useful apps than android...
But this app inventor will definitely encourage more dev to come to android, which is what google needs the most now.

I really dislike this idea, The market already has enough sub par apps when compared to the Apple Appstore, yes the appstore has its fair share but cmon this will allow EVERYONE to submit an app of their own.
Yea the Market will have a "gazillion" apps, how many of those apps will be Great, not many

well if you use the search tool or go like 3 to 5 pages back... youll see a post that i have about dynamo2... its very similar... if you ask the original author, he might let you pick up where he left off... its an awesome program... it just needs to be lighter in weight, updated, added landscape support, less bugs, and added features... it sounds like a lot, but the program is already off to a great start and is very usable in the current state that its in

Err, you should probably read someone's full post before chiding them about using a search tool, since he specifically mentioned he didn't like Dynamo 2 because it wasn't 3D. Plus it doesn't sound like he has a lot of experience with programming, so adding effects into Dynamo probably would help him much.
As an aside, do you know the author's email address? It'd be nice if we could get the source code for that.

i didnt see that he mentioned dynamo... but i wasnt chiding, i was merely directing him in the direction of my reference. theres enough ppl on xda who yell at the search challenged, thats never my aim. i like helping when i can. i just thought that the code itself might help a developer with the task of creating something vista like. im not sure the direct email address but the support email address is [email protected]...
although dynamo isnt 3d... it is still very fingerfriendly... maybe whoever takes on this task can set a preference option... 2d and 3d.
everyone who is interested in helping to notify the developer to continue work on this great app, please email him/her
i would like to see more work done on this.
im diggin the way sony is making thier little task manager, well i dont even know if it is a task manager or not yet, it might just be some application selection screen included with all the erricson bloatware:

Update: It looks like the website admin is trying to get marek (the author) to release the source to google code. Anyone willing to take a look at it and see if they can work on it for future improvements?
I think that dynamo isn't a good way to go - it's horribly slow (at least on my wizard). GVC's idea about using pocketCM framework might be better. Just imagine this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365656
as a task manager It looks great and what is more important - it's really fast, even on slower devices.
Also, since it seems to already be in 3D, achieving different thumbnail transitions (like flip3D) should be possible. However IMO flip3D effect is rather useless. I prefer to use a coverflow-like task switcher (and i do use it on my Ubuntu - looks like this).

I would love to use something like this for a task manager. It could replace the Cube in touch flow (since I don't use that anyway).
Yes but unfortunately the PocketCM framework is not open-source, so unless you can get the author to creat that task manager for you, it;s wishful thinking.

Depends on the language, I use C#. I could probably port a small C++ app over (if I have time).
It would be really nice....

Second I don't know if I'm allowed to ask questions here
But does anyone know if it would be possible porting psgroove to android, I'm not asking if it has been done just if it is possible.

Yeah this would be really great. I do know an iPhone version is being worked on.
I hope someone manages to do it, the phones should be more than capable of running it aslong as the software has control over the USB port. Although I think it should be possible since I've seen software to make your phone a USB host for nexus and desire.

After extensive google search I have came my personal opinion (everyone has one) that this will happen in the future. The software used to make this is open source. Since android is based off of open source somebody will be able to make this happen. I personaly am not smart enough to do this. I see a lot of sites promoting this to happen with jailbroken iphones in the "near future" more but for it to happen with android phones is very proberble as well

I've been working pretty hard through this. I will be taking a few hours to sleep now. Your comments may not appear for several hours because of this. I'm not sure what the rest of the team is planning to do. Chances are they will also be taking a break for a few hours.
Beta for Iphone is open now. Beta release in the next week +- 3 days.
Beta for android is still open but we will be closing it soon
$15 will get you into the beta for sure. Others may or may not be selected given the large amount of applications. So your best way in is to donate.
A video will be released within the next few days. of both the iOS port and the Android port.
Those who do donate may not receive confirmation for a while. But we will try our best.
Donate button is on the top right for those who have been asking.
Thanks for understanding that people have to sleep

I made this comment on his previous post, but he did not approve it:
Ok, I'm starting to loose my faith that you are actually doing something. Time to show some proof. In all of your posts you didn't say anything technical about your progress. What did you accomplish so far? What are your main issues right now? You've been wasting more time asking for donation than in actual development. As for your screenshots, anyone with basic Android coding skills could make an Activity with buttons triggering Toasts in less than 10 min. Where is the video you promised?
AND FOR THE REST OF YOU FOLKS:
I can't believe there so many people dumb enough to give this guy money without him actually delivering anything useful.

so you could just edit for the usb controller on HTC phones, compile to the linux app, then run it through a terminal.
would be an interesting idea anyway
It would appear that our long wait is drawing to end and the 2.1 should be released shortly. Unfortunately, there are some features that us soon to be 2.1 owners might still be missing to complete our X10 experience.
In order to get a jump on future improvements this thread is a place where you can comment on features that you would like to see added/cooked to our X10's after the revision.
What feature would you like to see added? Portable HotSpots, Voice Command over Bluetooth, Data backup, 10.1, etc...
Or, maybe you know about an existing work around and would like to spread the word?
Portable hotspots can be done now (with root access)...Barnacle WiFi Tether from the Market.
Besides for Flash and the speed improvements, I don't really need Froyo. Automatic app updates would be nice, and voice commands too, but I doubt I'd ever really use that.
I've already used froyo on my nexus one when I had it and I couldn't care less for froyo. 2.1 is most definitely good enough for me. 720p video recording, 16million colors is all I want. Mt doesn't matter either. 2.1 drops and ill be set.

unfortunatley it looks like there will be no 16m colors.

Thanks for the info on Barnacle. Have you used it? Maybe this is a silly question, but I know you lose SE updates with root. Would auto app updates still work from a rooted device?
And, 10.1 yeah that is a pretty big one. I really don't need a cell phone/portable device, but since I have it, 10.1 is a big yes. Kind of THE reason I purchased the X10.

I'm curious to why Flash is needed on a mobile phone. The option to have it is nice, but it not being there is definitely not a drawback. Most big video sites use HTML5 for video now, and for the few that don't, Skyfire works fine in loading the videos up. The only other things Flash is used for is ads, games and poorly designed websites. For games, 95% would control absolutely awfully, due to the lack of physical controls on the device. And no one wants to view ads if they don't have to.
Hence, my reasoning for not considering a "lack" of Flash as a "limitation" of 2.1.

The thing is, we all bought this phone knowing it supports 65k colors.
SE didn't say anywhere that it will get 16mil with 2.1 upgrade ... or anything else.
People assumed is a 1.6 downside (like the 256Mb ram vs 384) and because the mini was advertised as 16mil it means X10 has it too.
Time will tell if is a driver issue or hardware issue
Not having 16m colors is kind of a bummer. Not really needed though.
All i'm really looking forward to at this point is the app compatibility. Anything else is just icing on the cake.

Your very welcome I have been using it all day.
Its kinda a taste to what I think android will become. The same Dev has a few other floating. Apps. Like a calculator.
definitely cool enough to drop a buck and a half on. I played with it for a few minutes and then moved on but when the time comes and I need a couple browsers at the ready Ive got an app for that!
If any developers are interested in how he's doing it, he's registering the app as a service and drawing to the notification layer which also allows you to intercept (and act upon) touch events.
Not saying this app is doing it, but beware of apps that request those permissions, they could in theory log every touch on your screen.
Chrome Beta does much better

that would be my first step even before starting on a public theme is to ask for permission if I was to use bits and pieces. Don't want any agry devs.

definitively would be the first place to go and offer it free at first of course because sharing is caring but I'd put it in the epic 4g area because that's where I started my roots with this lol
So a aokp theme thats on the market gets 100k downloads and is a theme that is very basic can get roughly 60k? at 1.00$ per dl? doesnt seem like pocket change to me

I don't think the theme was a paid theme at first, that's why it has so many DL's.
