2.1 limitations and possible work arounds - XPERIA X10 General

It would appear that our long wait is drawing to end and the 2.1 should be released shortly. Unfortunately, there are some features that us soon to be 2.1 owners might still be missing to complete our X10 experience.
In order to get a jump on future improvements this thread is a place where you can comment on features that you would like to see added/cooked to our X10's after the revision.
What feature would you like to see added? Portable HotSpots, Voice Command over Bluetooth, Data backup, 10.1, etc...
Or, maybe you know about an existing work around and would like to spread the word?

Portable hotspots can be done now (with root access)...Barnacle WiFi Tether from the Market.
Besides for Flash and the speed improvements, I don't really need Froyo. Automatic app updates would be nice, and voice commands too, but I doubt I'd ever really use that.

I've already used froyo on my nexus one when I had it and I couldn't care less for froyo. 2.1 is most definitely good enough for me. 720p video recording, 16million colors is all I want. Mt doesn't matter either. 2.1 drops and ill be set.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App

unfortunatley it looks like there will be no 16m colors.

Thanks for the info on Barnacle. Have you used it? Maybe this is a silly question, but I know you lose SE updates with root. Would auto app updates still work from a rooted device?
And, 10.1 yeah that is a pretty big one. I really don't need a cell phone/portable device, but since I have it, 10.1 is a big yes. Kind of THE reason I purchased the X10.

You purchased a phone based on it's potential ability to run an incredibly useless web plug-in?

I'm curious to why Flash is needed on a mobile phone. The option to have it is nice, but it not being there is definitely not a drawback. Most big video sites use HTML5 for video now, and for the few that don't, Skyfire works fine in loading the videos up. The only other things Flash is used for is ads, games and poorly designed websites. For games, 95% would control absolutely awfully, due to the lack of physical controls on the device. And no one wants to view ads if they don't have to.
Hence, my reasoning for not considering a "lack" of Flash as a "limitation" of 2.1.

The thing is, we all bought this phone knowing it supports 65k colors.
SE didn't say anywhere that it will get 16mil with 2.1 upgrade ... or anything else.
People assumed is a 1.6 downside (like the 256Mb ram vs 384) and because the mini was advertised as 16mil it means X10 has it too.
Time will tell if is a driver issue or hardware issue

Not having 16m colors is kind of a bummer. Not really needed though.
All i'm really looking forward to at this point is the app compatibility. Anything else is just icing on the cake.

It's needed because it's highly desired and also available on other phones - I don't mean to sound cynical or rhetoric but I certainly want it for a variety of reasons. It's not as bad as you make it out to be. Even so, many people like myself highly desire this.

+1, only thing i'd really really like to see enginered to our 2.1 is app2sd. Not that i have so many apps it's a total need for it, just becouse i like it that way. Feels better to have a clean rom. Easier to re-flash and play around with cooked roms without having to re-install all apps aswell.

I reckon the chance of getting anything additional to whats been listed (If this is real) are fairly low taking into account the SE software development speed we've come to know and love.

We all want different things from our X10's. The idea of the thread is that we high light what is important to each of us. And, we can post work around as we find them.

I am with you on that. If I could only ask for one thing it would start with 10.1.
Not saying that there isn't a list of other things that I would like. Such as apps2sd. We can only hope and wait for someone to either come up with a work around or buy a device with more features.

Froyo to support animated gif

See comment 151. I wonder why you need a lot of RAM for that. So I guess only the Nexus One and the Milestone and the future high end Android phones will be able to display animated gif.

True about Flash and Froyo

So I was browsing the Internet to see how cool is to have Flash on Android device, I was sure Adobe improved flash due to many many criticizes about it but I was wrong.
I know(actually I think) that Google did his part, and improved speed and usability in Android, but Adobe still needs a LOT of optimization!
In this video you will see following because of installed Adobe Flash:
-Slow page loading(even though Google improved speed in Froyo!)
-choppy performance
-instability
-huge CPU and RAM usage
Android 2.2 (Froyo) Web Browser Test with Flash enabled
In my opinion don't install Adobe Flash Player
Don't get me wrong guys I love Android 2.2 and Google openness, but ADOBE needs to work...A LOT!
What do you expect? It's a beta release.

Than they shouldn't release it, it is useless!
Apple was right...I can't believe that is true!
This really bugs me, its FAR from useless. I have used it to play music from the myspace music players, games on kongregate, a liveleak video, and on the burger king website. It works great, if you keep it on demand and not on all the time, it won't even slow down your browsing. If you really think that this is useless, and shouldn't be released, then you are an idiot. It may not work 100% yet, but this is a huge step forward for the Android platform, and I for one am thankful that I have it on my Nexus. If you don't want it, you can uninstall it, it's that easy. Stop being whiny idiots and complaining about how it slows this down or uses too much CPU.
You can go into your settings and set the Flash plugin to "On demand" which essentially switches it off until you browse to a site with Flash content when you will see a play button. Press that button and the Flash will load.
Perhaps that should be the default option, but nonetheless, simple to change and is definitely the way forwards in my view.
i don't browse flash based website all the time, so it doesn't bother me at all. at least i know the mobile browser is fully functional for all websites.
Its Beta for a reason "Testing purposes"

Calm down. It's not even hardware accelerated yet. I for one am glad I've got any flash support this far.
If you only wanted something that's 100% failsafe go grab a parchment and quill
I hope the op isn't trolling. Adobe released the beta version for adventurous people to try it. If you don't think it is ready, then fine, just unistall it. No need to jump into conclusion when the final version isn't even out yet. The argument 'then they shouldn't release it (the beta version)' is rather weak because we are talking about a beta version here, which is expected to have flaws here or there...
flash works fine for me...and it definitely doesn't leave my browser sluggish...seems to be faster than the 2.1 browser even with Flash enabled...so I dunno.
Also, the Froyo browser is a fully capable HTML5 browser as well...so no, Apple wasn't right, Google was right...options > no options. I could understand if Google was anti-HTML5 but they are not, in fact as witnessed in the Day 1 Keynote of Google I/O they are one of HTML5's biggest supporters.
They just refuse to abandon the PRESENT to feed the future.
at least we have the option to use Flash.
You can change the plugin settings in the browser to load on demand so it will only load the flash content if u click on it.
Seriously, some people need to learn what "BETA" means. u_u
it's funny.
I was reading this and went to cnn and I was watching that oil spill vid.
And then someone called me. The vid stops and I talk on the phone to a
co worker and then hang up after about ten minutes. After pressing the end call button the video starts back up in the browser.
I thought that was pretty cool.
It's better than I thought it would be, and I'm pretty happy to have it.

Other than huge flash sites its awesome for me. I think its easily almost done.
Yeah initially flash slowed down my browser but once I switched it to ON DEMAND only everything is perfect. The thing I like about android is that I have the CHOICE to use flash if I want. I don't have to let apple choose for me. And when html5 matures and is mainstream I will have to choice to use both.

Yeah I wouldnt mind hearing from someone that came from say CM5 to the latest stock Froyo. Is it better? Is it worth flashing now seeing as how CM6 is about a week or so away?
I would try it now myself, but I can't give up the dumb little things. (such as trackball wake)
I've used every CM version and every leaked version of Froyo. I was surprised that the final Froyo release seemed faster and smoother than FRF83. The browser seems really fast now and app switching is great thanks to JIT. I like my FRF85B Froyo final setup right now more than I did CM5.0.8. I can't wait for CM6 though.
Super. Wonderful. Amazing. Thank you Google and anyone else on the OHA that contributed to this.
It's great. I love it. I love it even more when someone hands me a HTC Touch Pro2 with Windows Mobile on it... Microsoft shouldn't even be in the mobile business. They should leave it to the experts. It was sad.
If you ever get a chance to put your hands on Windows Mobile... do it. It will make you appreciate your Android phone more than when you bought it.

I don't think the JIT would have much impact on app switching. The highmem kernel OTOH makes a huge difference. My launcher was always relaunching when switching from big apps such as the browser or navigation. Since upgrading to froyo I haven't seen the launcher restart once.

The JIT actually wouldn't have any impact on loading times. The standard interpreted code is always run initially. It's only once the app starts running that the JIT is able to locate frequently accessed blocks of code that would benefit from compiling to native code.

I wouldn't mind a WM7 skin. But I have my Xbox for Xbox Live...I don't really play the arcade type games, so I wouldn't have use of Xbox Live on my phone...unless you can put Reach, Tier 1, Crysis 2 or MW2 on a cell phone...with good jitter/ping/lag/etc.

Ironically some proponents of openness only possess openness in their phones and not their minds. I'd like to see it happen just to see it happen.

But now that the have released the Sideload Manager and it now accepts a least to the best of my knowledge, Android 1.6 apps and have installed and run Angry Birds, Dolphin Browser, Opera Mini, all seem to work fine, and saw the awful Browser for the Sony, I am really no longer so sure.
If one could install, any software like in the I'm Watch into the Sony one, I will probably be buying the Sony soon. If there are limitations, probably not.

Are you loading apps via I'M Cloud or another way? I cannot get that cloud to recognize myvwatch.
Why isn't anyone here using the Motorola MotoACTV? It is still the best, in my opinion. Runs android 2.3.5, is rooted, has Roms, has root tools and even an AOSP rom already out there.
Question about Sideload Mgr for I'm Watch

It's cheaper than the I'm watch. You can find them on ebay for between $50 and $200. I don't think that's a reason.
Although, the root tool I developed for it has been downloaded over 11,000 times now, so apparently it's being used quite a bit lol. I just want more of you guys to recognize its awesomeness.

Me too!
For those in this thread (or forum, for that mater) that are interested, I'm creating a full rundown of which watches do best in which categories. The link is here. I'll add more as time allows, I'm just now starting it.

GREAT chart, thanks for pulling it together! I've never heard of the Rock Watch -- would you happen to have a link to the manufacturer?
I also did a (limited) smartwatch comparison on my blog. There's alot of interest in how the various smart watches compare. (My comparison here.)

Ah yes! I need to add the metawatch! The rock watch is on ebay, and I think on amazon too. I can't remember who makes it, but the real world battery life is not so great, from my understanding. Still, it looks neat lol. I will complete my chart tonight if I'm able, with all their features, such as wifi, gps, vibration function, etc. I'll also try to add pictures. If you guys know if any of those prices are wrong, let me know? I tried to find retail prices for them but had problems.

Thanks for all of your hard work -- not easy to pull all the details together.
The prices you've cited look pretty accurate to me. (Note that Pebble has set $150 for non-kickstarter pricing.)
Thanks again for this handy reference chart.
Thanks for the comparisons. If I had known fhat tye motoactv was rooted with custom ROMs, I might have not bought the I'M Watch.
Here, check it out now:
Smart Watch Spec Comparison
I've added a LOT. I've still got to add the WIMM One watch and the MetaWatch though.
UPDATE: 3/11 - Added the WIMM One and MetaWatch. If anything is wrong, some places contradicted information, so please let me know!
Motoactv FTW! Runs on Android 2.3.4, runs a plethora of smart phone apps, and it's not hideously under-powered.

Good info! I have to point out though that the Motoactv runs on Android 2.3.4 (unless they updated it in the latest firmwares)
