Hi there,
Could someone explain to me what's the big advantage of 6.5.x over 6.5? The only thing I can see is RSS feeds on the home tab and a few screen-space-taking huge buttons on the bottom (Start, etc).
Yes, I could flash a rom with 6.5.x and give it a go, but I prefer not to flash this device too often and read some opinions from you guys and gals experts on the matter, before I'll backup everything, hard reset and re-install and re-configure and... ;-)
Aren't those huge buttons on the bottom annoying? Surely there must be some advantage? Or are there any features you can't live without with WinMo 6.5.x, which can't be found on the 6.5?

6.5.x is finger friendly, bigger menus, scroll bars, buttons. The Start menu is moved to the bottom and the HTC Messenger client for SMS is reverted to the 6.5.x stock, which does take some getting used to, but there is a nice mod for it that makes it look like so...

Other than that there is no difference, but I can assure you once you flash a 6.5.x ROM, I doubt you'll want to revert to 6.5.
thanks a lot for your reply!
Maybe I just should try it. I´ve downloaded Miri´s 6.5.x rom, heard some good reviews about it.
What´s the mod you´re using called? I''ll search for it, in case I don't like the messaging client.

It's called Kimi Sae Ireba's Speech Bubbles mod, but I don't know if it is released as a cab as of yet. It is currently bundled with NRG's Energy ROMs so that's how I have it.
There is a hardware button for windows start menu in HD2. Hence the most important advantage of 6.5.x doesn't matter.
Hihi, I was just browsing NRG's thread. I've used his roms on my old Touch HD.
Ah hell with it, I'll flash 'm both... ;-)

Isn't the advantage of the start menu on the bottom to free up more space on the top for icons?

Well the "X" button is now at the bottom-right, so there's still an advantage. It's definitely easier to tap the "X" at the bottom-right than the top-right of the screen.
............
Also, I'm not sure about the whole taskbar "takes up more screen space" thing. The top taskbar in WM6.5.x is thinner than the top taskbar in WM6.5. The bottom taskbar in WM6.5.x is thicker than the bottom taskbar in WM6.5. Just think of it as the screen shifting upwards in WM6.5.x.

For the 70% of our readership who still care about this device, we have a small tidbit of news. In line with its new full-screen button-minimalist design, the HTC Touch HD eschews the usual phone answer and end call buttons (though vestigial versions still exist on the device) for a new on screen phone call answering system using two adjacent sliders.
The system is similar to the iPhone, but goes one further. To answer a phone call you slide to the left, to ignore it one simply slides to the right. The interface will be present on HTC’s other new Touch series devices too, like the HTC Touch Viva for example.

hum I tought this was already in the diamond and pro because the first version I used was a mixture of the opal images and the pro regs.
I feel this design is ergonomically incorrect for 90% of people. I am right handed, i usually pick up the phone with my right hand and thus would be easier for me to slide my thumb to the right to answer, left to ignore since i ignore very few calls. (See the slide to answer feature of S2U2) no?

Ok, responding to myself, I just found how to have this keyboard again!!
Apparently the keyboard is there all the time, at least in the roms that I've tested but the cookers don't enable it!!!
On the other day, accidentally I saw a cab on the Cloudy's rom that was to enable the "old" M$ keyboard.
I was (and I'm still) not using Cloudy's rom but decide to try if it works. Install it and puff there it was in all is glory!!!
Here is the link for that cab,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5410858&postcount=278
Many thkx to Cloudy for this one and a hands down to the rest of the cookers for hiding this feature. Worst than hiding is not to give a cab for this as I many times asked for it...
Fifty thumbs up. I've even posted a thread asking for this months ago. Just did a hard reset and decided to try my luck.
I have been in hell with the other keyboards. This is the missing piece for me.
Cheers to cloud and you, OP.
Very surprised to see the updated feature list for Win Mobile 6.5.3, as already installed on the new SE Aspen. Hope this will be available for the HD2soon.
•Capacitive touchscreen support
•Platform to enable multitouch
•Touch controls throughout system (no need for stylus)
•Consistent Navigation
•Horizontal scroll bar replaces tabs (think settings>system>about screen)
•Magnifier brings touch support to legacy applications
•Simplified out-of-box experience with fewer steps
•Drag and drop icons on Start Screen
•(Mobile) Internet Explorer Page load time decreased
•IE Memory management improved
•IE Pan & flick gestures smoothed
•IE Zoom & rotation speed increased
•Updated runtime tools (.NET CF 3.5, SQL CE 3.1)
•Arabic read/write document support
•Watson (error reporting) improvements and bug fixes
Hopefully we'll see this present in HTC's HD2 ROM version 2.x
Already available for custom ROM users
Not sure whether they'll update to 6.5.3. Maybe they'll go straight to 7.
Anyway, if you want WM6.5.3 now, you can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534
Make sure you read all the tutorials, before you do anything with your device. And don't ask questions before you've read everything.

I have to say this: The Phone, etc. buttons are horrible. They make me want to vomit just by looking at them. They give a cheap look to the entire interface. A step in the wrong direction. I hope there is a way to remove them and go back to the minimal, and slicker options.

They're just images, and they're referenced in registry values, so you can easily change or just delete them.

honestly, i think most cookers would only need to concentrate on the latest WM builds rather than legacy 6.5 builds, as what seem to put most people off 6.5.x is the big ass buttons. If the cookers shrank them and made them less ugly, im sure it would make things better for everybody?
Voice Control?
Does 6.5.3 address lack of voice control ?

If you modify it in your *.cpr-file (HexagonGrid="TRUE" to HexagonGrid="FALSE"), your start menu will cease to work
I have tried some times ago, but with no luck!
ope someone could make it work!
I read somewhere that it's (nearly) impossible to do it, the script that's responsible for the hexagon layout is hidden in a DLL.
As far as I know, a reasonable compromise is if you use the folderview.exe from HTC (it's usually there if touchflo is installed).

I like the idea. It will be better if the start menu can organize by page so that same catagory of apps can group together...
i think it would be easier if it is possible, pushing the start button to open up a new program with shortcuts, similar to that. Correct me if i m wrong.
hi, i like that Start menu Grid. I'm using HTC imagio and that Start menu is in my ship rom but when i flashed a customed rom, there isnt that start menu grid anymore. Hope someone can improve that
+1
I like that idea, in fact I was asking about it in HD2 section - but no luck
I also tried to modify the .crp but no luck either.
Would be really nice to have it!
still no one ?...
I really hope a developer sees this. We see allot of start menu modifications like lists. But i havent seen this normal grid menu!
Until it's developped (if so) you all can use "iPhone Today" instead. Also it's faster/smoother than WM Startmenu.
Also, some way to scroll horizontally
I was thinking of the same idea... and with the ability to scroll horizontally...this would exactly look like the iPhone...
If this can be worked out by some expert chef.... we won't need any application to give it a iPhone like feel.....
Also, i think the earlier ROM's had horizontally aligned programs.... so its not new... just that it needs to be implemented in newer ROMs.
I am very much interested in this .....
It will be good if it can catagorize the pages (with header). With that we choose to remove the sense to save ~30m of memory.
Bump, anyone?
Definately interested in this. What I think would be better is a sense version of the start menu to totally hide the win mo look. It should look just like the program screen when you tap on a quick link to choose an ap from the program screen. Cookie should feature a cookie start menu into cookies home tab 1.81

hey thts right..........
Hi all, new here and interested in an answer to one of my favorite questions:
Which ROM?
I have: iMate JasJam Telstra Aus edition, currently running BlackSatin WM6 I put on it years ago. I just loaded Hard SPL 7 on it this morning.
I loaded SPB Shell on it today and was impressed. I'm still tossing up investing some time in the 'ol jasjam for a second phone....
So I'm interested in running SPB on WM 6.5 rather than 6.0/6.1 as I loath using the stylus and am curious if it will run ok on this old phone.
There are a heap of ROMs I see here, many are from 2007/8/9. What's a popular version I can install that's "current" I guess but not next to impossible to install? Maybe a couple of suggestions I can try then just in case I get stuck.
Worst case scenario I'll keep playing with what I have that's working. Thanks!
Managed to install CRC 6.1 on it. Wasn't happy with 6.1 so I went to something called:
FOR_TESTING_PURPOSE_ONLY_WP6.5_23047_STD.7z
Works fine, sticking with that. The other popular versions on here wouldn't install. I had HardSPL installed but still didn't install.
