Very surprised to see the updated feature list for Win Mobile 6.5.3, as already installed on the new SE Aspen. Hope this will be available for the HD2soon.
•Capacitive touchscreen support
•Platform to enable multitouch
•Touch controls throughout system (no need for stylus)
•Consistent Navigation
•Horizontal scroll bar replaces tabs (think settings>system>about screen)
•Magnifier brings touch support to legacy applications
•Simplified out-of-box experience with fewer steps
•Drag and drop icons on Start Screen
•(Mobile) Internet Explorer Page load time decreased
•IE Memory management improved
•IE Pan & flick gestures smoothed
•IE Zoom & rotation speed increased
•Updated runtime tools (.NET CF 3.5, SQL CE 3.1)
•Arabic read/write document support
•Watson (error reporting) improvements and bug fixes
Hopefully we'll see this present in HTC's HD2 ROM version 2.x
Already available for custom ROM users
Not sure whether they'll update to 6.5.3. Maybe they'll go straight to 7.
Anyway, if you want WM6.5.3 now, you can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534
Make sure you read all the tutorials, before you do anything with your device. And don't ask questions before you've read everything.

I have to say this: The Phone, etc. buttons are horrible. They make me want to vomit just by looking at them. They give a cheap look to the entire interface. A step in the wrong direction. I hope there is a way to remove them and go back to the minimal, and slicker options.

They're just images, and they're referenced in registry values, so you can easily change or just delete them.

6.5.3 is pretty much what 6.5 should've been
kinda vista and win 7 ^^
I hate 6.5.3 Windows Button at the Button -.- just eats Space... It should stay were it was...
I will only update because I hope for better multitouch coding
I'm not a fan of 6.5.3 due to the giant buttons at the bottom, though it looks very promising when i tried it out a few weeks ago.

i totally agree, im not liking the big ass buttons. having them at the bottom is nice, but it just looks stupid.
is it possible to shrink them a-la 6.5 style?

yeah i saw that, but its not very explicit in whats involved in the process.
honestly, i think most cookers would only need to concentrate on the latest WM builds rather than legacy 6.5 builds, as what seem to put most people off 6.5.x is the big ass buttons. If the cookers shrank them and made them less ugly, im sure it would make things better for everybody?
Voice Control?
Does 6.5.3 address lack of voice control ?

Is there really any benefit in using opera mobile over mini. I have the sprint touch with opera mini and it is blazingly fast compared to opera mobile. I think I just going to stick with opera mini but I would like to know is how can I get rid of that awful start page, I just want google to pop up when I start it and not that startpage
@kryptoniteman
For most, Operamini is fine for general surfing. Opera mobile is a much more feature rich browser... for instance, on Mini I can't access my work website and download my work schedule... something I need to be able to do. Now that the new Opera Mobile series navigates like Mini, you get the best of both worlds imo.
If you think about it, all Mini 4 is a beta test for Mobile 9.5 navigation.
If you just do general surfing and want the best free browser out there, go with Mini.
If you want the best browser all around, go with 9.5. The interface is actually better on Mobile, the navigation is as good as Mini, and you get a much more complete browser. Paying for Opera Mobile is a no-brainer for me. The browser IS that good and I want the people at Opera to keep doing great work.

Thank yout, I really like you skin very much ... am i getting you right, that you will expand the menu? i think there is space for one more button ... in my oppinion the most usefull button is zoom out. could you add this please?
@therealholg
I agree that would be nice. I've only made graphics changes so far. I won't be able to change the *.exe or *.dll files, so do expect any miracles. I probably overstated the "major" change on my previous post.
I'm starting to go through the *.ini and *.css files to try to optimize, adjust and make better. ETA... this weekend I should have a new update. I'm going to try to scrub it good. Any suggestions here would be great.
These will be tweaks more than any huge changes... adding a zoom function probably can't be done at my level , but I'll look.
Now it has become the best browser on windows mobile up till now
stupid question: I'm absolutely new to Opera, and I've never seen the .cab format before. How exactly do I install this?
And, more important: Is there a version of this for 9.6?
I made a little something for you!
Tippy is a bill splitter and tip calculator for Windows Mobile. It was designed to work on all resolutions and to never require use of the stylus.
I improved many things with v.1.1. Lots of bugs were fixed, UI was made easier to use and a big button SIP was added for number input. You should definitively update if you have 1.0!

I was affraid the demand would be too small but seeing people are interested I'll pursue development a bit.
VGA for devices is ready (Force QVGA) but it needs .net CF and I didn't want it around for a first release. I'll also add more currency symbols as suggested on another forum.
Something I did that I would like to see more often is settings saved to text files. It can be edited easily by anyone and leaves nothing after uninstall.
Thank you for sharing!
I am definately going to try this out.

i still haven't been able to put it on my phone, but i'll have a crack at it tonight... from the screen shot on your site... i like how the tip percentage and number of people are configured with finger friendly buttons... what do you think about adding an easier way to add the amount to tip? i don't know if you've used g-alarm... but maybe something like how you set the alarm time in that? where you have add/subtract buttons below each digit (that way u wouldn't have to bring up the keyboard).

That's interesting. I'll try G-Alarm and look for what you are talking about.
I might add a pop-up form with a keypad when you click the text box and see how this work.
I don't like the look very much so I might add a cuter UI (skinnable ) if it doesn't slow down the launch time too much.
I love the idea, and tried it. BUT the calucation is WRONG. Hope it will be fixed soon.

Oops! You are right! Once you start messing with the amount of people present it gets ugly. I'll fix that soon enough!
I don't test my apps enough
I fixed the results so they should be accurate now.
I'm currently working on a big keypad to type the amount. I will also add some languages and currencies and eventually skinnable interface.
UPDATE:
I made the following changes:
-Tip is now accurately calculated
-The amount is entered using a SIP keypad
-The + and - buttons for tip and people are now changing individual digits instead of the whole number. It's much faster and easier to enter it now.
-Changed the look a bit, fixed control resize errors when rotating screen, VGA should work well.
After all I won't add a skinnable UI to save space and keep the app fast and usable.
I only have a few minor fixes left to be done so I should release v.1.1 tomorrow. (I'm on Ubuntu and I'm too lazy to reboot... and Vista sucks).
Ta-da! An update!
A lot of stuff was fixed, including all of the suggestions except languages

Hello,
First of all, I hope am posting in the correct location. Anyways, in windows mobile, we receive different tooltips, ex: call summary report from the provider, credit report, and many others, the ones am talking about are the tooltips that appear on the top right corner of the screen.
These tooltips are so annoying since the buttons they carry are totally not finger friendly. After using "Yota Phone" on my HTC Touch Pro, i noticed that they mapped/changed the default tooltips with the title "PHONE" with their own nice finger friendly one.
Is there any program that does such a thing? searched a lot and couldn't find any. If nobody knows a program that does this, can someone tell me what are the commands/code of those functions/events? maybe i would do a small application for that one.
Thank you

This is an awesome idea!!! I too am suffering from sausage fingers syndrome
I'm not exactly sure how this could be done but I there is another application on XDA that changes the way our Context Menus look. He does is via dll injection and my guess is that that is how to do this also.
This would be awesome, I hate those little popups as well!!!! Maybe you could ask francarl (creator of FingerMenu), your idea sounds similar to what he did.

thank you m.schmidler. I was thinking about how to replace standard tooltip. It will be very useful if someone finds which is the Win32 API (if exists) that opens the tooltip!
I would totally use this! Anyone wanna pick this up?
Great to see you guys interested in this idea, but wish someone could actually implement it. If only creators of "Yota Phone" would reply. Since they successfully changed the "Phone" tooltip.
If only they share the knowledge. already posted a question regarding this matter on their thread, but no replies on that so far.
I will look into this as soon as I get some time. I'm working on wFacebook for now but as soon as I release a new version (hopefully by this weekend) i'll do some research and post my findings.
Add me to the list of the intrigued.
while you're at it, could you have a look at the default windows popups as well? you know, the ones with that incredibly tiny and impossible to hit ok thingy in the top right corner? even *with* a stylus it is annoyingly hard to press ok.
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/miscctrl/ToolTip_Class.aspx or http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/02/15/373120.aspx do there help any? I am not a programmer! so if they don't help at all!

If there are things that amaze me in pocket pc they are the following:
1. PPCs are more than 10 years old, and we still have THAT FEW RAM with SUCH SLOW PROCESSOR?
2. A message to Microsoft, WTF are you doing? We here at XDA can create a better OS with MUCH smarter tools and you as an enterprise suck that much in your own OS?
Hope we get a fix / program for the tooltip AND those middle confirmation messages, like the one that appears when you try to shut down the device. Buttons are non user friendly and still needs a stylus. Idiotic menus/tooltips.
Cheers

If you modify it in your *.cpr-file (HexagonGrid="TRUE" to HexagonGrid="FALSE"), your start menu will cease to work
I have tried some times ago, but with no luck!
ope someone could make it work!
I read somewhere that it's (nearly) impossible to do it, the script that's responsible for the hexagon layout is hidden in a DLL.
As far as I know, a reasonable compromise is if you use the folderview.exe from HTC (it's usually there if touchflo is installed).

I like the idea. It will be better if the start menu can organize by page so that same catagory of apps can group together...
i think it would be easier if it is possible, pushing the start button to open up a new program with shortcuts, similar to that. Correct me if i m wrong.
hi, i like that Start menu Grid. I'm using HTC imagio and that Start menu is in my ship rom but when i flashed a customed rom, there isnt that start menu grid anymore. Hope someone can improve that
+1
I like that idea, in fact I was asking about it in HD2 section - but no luck
I also tried to modify the .crp but no luck either.
Would be really nice to have it!
still no one ?...
I really hope a developer sees this. We see allot of start menu modifications like lists. But i havent seen this normal grid menu!
Until it's developped (if so) you all can use "iPhone Today" instead. Also it's faster/smoother than WM Startmenu.
Also, some way to scroll horizontally
I was thinking of the same idea... and with the ability to scroll horizontally...this would exactly look like the iPhone...
If this can be worked out by some expert chef.... we won't need any application to give it a iPhone like feel.....
Also, i think the earlier ROM's had horizontally aligned programs.... so its not new... just that it needs to be implemented in newer ROMs.
I am very much interested in this .....
It will be good if it can catagorize the pages (with header). With that we choose to remove the sense to save ~30m of memory.
Bump, anyone?
Definately interested in this. What I think would be better is a sense version of the start menu to totally hide the win mo look. It should look just like the program screen when you tap on a quick link to choose an ap from the program screen. Cookie should feature a cookie start menu into cookies home tab 1.81

Hi there,
Could someone explain to me what's the big advantage of 6.5.x over 6.5? The only thing I can see is RSS feeds on the home tab and a few screen-space-taking huge buttons on the bottom (Start, etc).
Yes, I could flash a rom with 6.5.x and give it a go, but I prefer not to flash this device too often and read some opinions from you guys and gals experts on the matter, before I'll backup everything, hard reset and re-install and re-configure and... ;-)
Aren't those huge buttons on the bottom annoying? Surely there must be some advantage? Or are there any features you can't live without with WinMo 6.5.x, which can't be found on the 6.5?

6.5.x is finger friendly, bigger menus, scroll bars, buttons. The Start menu is moved to the bottom and the HTC Messenger client for SMS is reverted to the 6.5.x stock, which does take some getting used to, but there is a nice mod for it that makes it look like so...

There is a hardware button for windows start menu in HD2. Hence the most important advantage of 6.5.x doesn't matter.

Well the "X" button is now at the bottom-right, so there's still an advantage. It's definitely easier to tap the "X" at the bottom-right than the top-right of the screen.
............
Also, I'm not sure about the whole taskbar "takes up more screen space" thing. The top taskbar in WM6.5.x is thinner than the top taskbar in WM6.5. The bottom taskbar in WM6.5.x is thicker than the bottom taskbar in WM6.5. Just think of it as the screen shifting upwards in WM6.5.x.
