Anyone break there screen :( - EVO 4G General

I dropped my phone from about feet and broke my phones screen. It seems like theres a cheap plastic layer thats all cracked up but it fully works. is there an easy fix? IT looks like the layer below is perfect. I called sprint and there repair centers do not fix evos. Looks like an easy fix. if i could get the layer. any ideas? i do have insurance but i do not want to get a phone with a crappy screen.

Your only hope is insurance at this point. I searched long and hard, and even if you find a replacement digitizer (the layer above the screen you shattered) It would cost around 100 dollars, and you probably dont have access to a clean enough room to replace it without getting dust under the screen. You have insurance, pay up the 100 asap and get a new one.

Just to let you know its 150 now. My pre broke about 2 mnths before getting my evo and thy changed it for all smartphone/touchscreen its 150.

wow wtf 150. that really sucks i wont be able to for 2 weeks just bought a macbook
honestly cannot believe how cheap this screen is built i bought this without the 2 year upgrade... fulll price 475 1 week ago. i could throw my hero at the wall and this wouldnt happen. it fell from a height that i didnt even think twice about it breaking. then i picked it up and my jaw dropped. w.e tho i will have to wait 2 weeks.

Replaced a cracked evo screen through TEP Sprint insurance just a few weeks ago, it was still $100

I will have to get a rubber case after i get a new one. anyway how do i go about "un" rooting my phone to send to asurion?

The Assurion deductible is $100
I did the same thing and ended up just doing the insurance claim. The deductible was $100 not $150. It sucked it happened the first week I had the phone but I did get a brand new in the box Evo. Also based on the stuff I read on the forums I kept the battery, charger, and SD card from the old phone. On the return envelope it said in fine print "return phone only, no batteries or accessories". Not worth a hundred bucks but at least I have a spare battery.

Sometimes when something falls just right it breaks easily. The bottom line is its a glass screen and has more surface area than say a hero. Best if it doesn't fall.

squaretrade has a $50 deductable and it cost $75 (customer discount) for 2 years including accidental damage. I think normally it's around $100 for it.

Asurion Returning Dmg Phone~

Quick question I will try to make the story short i accidently drop'd my evo actually it slipped out of my pocket getting out of my car and hitted the concrete face down, yup completly shattered screen.
I went to sprint to see if i could do something with the 30 days warranty but no luck, instead they helped me file a claim with Asurion, i already recieved the new refurb phone from Asurion (excelent shape) and no screen separation issue like the brand new i had from sprint.
I also recieved a battery with that phone not the original red that comes with the evo, a black one that says htc innovation on the back, i will keep the red one, buut my question is Can i keep both batteries and send my old phone without battery, or will i get charged for this
anyone has experience with asurion and doing this??
When I had blackberry'e I had more batteries and chargers than I would ever need.
Don't quote me but Asurion has never given me any flak over hanging on to batteries, chargers, headphones, pretty much anything but the actual phone.
My family has always kept the batteries. They can't do anything with used batteries, so don't worry about it, the one that is in it is probably a 1500mAh for a touch pro 2, OEM.
You can keep the battery, all they care about is the phone. Batteries are considered expendables. Even a warranty swap through Sprint, all they want is the phone returned.
Consider this as well if you don't believe me: Had you lost the phone, or it was stolen, you would file the claim, still pay the same deductible, and they would still send you the replacement phone and battery.

Yup everyone is right, you can keep the battery. Hopefully that makes your $100 deductible you just paid sting a bit less.
In my last saurian claim the pamphlet said specifically to not return the battery. I think the fact that batteries can catch fire and explode if shorted puts them in a hazardous category and must be declared to the post office and charged accordingly.
That statement is just my thought on the matter. Don't quote me on it's integrity.

Why is everyone saying $100, I thought the $7 insurance was $50...
edit: fk nevermind, damn high end phones.
That's bs, we have to pay half of what the phone cost us just to get a refurbished one?
Same here I usually keep all accesories n have never .received any question ir a raised eye brow in my direction. Oh and the phone does not cost 200 as far as price goes that's based on retail price. So your only paying a fraction of what the phone costs.
When I filed a claim for my blackberry, I wasn't sure about keeping the battery or not, so I called them and asked. They wanted me to keep the battery. They said that if I sent the battery back with the phone and it would happen to leak/explode/do bad stuff, it would be on them, so they ask people to not send the battery.
The card that came with the new phone should say something on it like "send only the device. Do not send any accessories, i.e. batteries, chargers, cords".

You are paying 1/5th of what the phone costs not half. You paid $200 subsidized for the phone. Break your phone tomorrow go to sprint to buy a replacement and you'll be paying $500.

Don't know, but I'm paying $7/mo for the insurance and don't want to pay $100 to get a replacement for a defect(waiting for it to be a huge issue), I only paid $224 for the phone, guess I'll be proactive about the 30day policy.

Just don't buy any other smart phone, you be in the exact same boat.
Low cell phone prices are only available because they are subsidized by your carrier, which in turn locks you into a contract to get their subsidization back. Minus insurance you will pay full non-subsidized price for any phone with any carrier.
I thought it said on the return envelope not to include the cables, charger, battery, or any of that crap. With that said I have always kept the battery. One word of advise:
Take to the phone to the post office and get a certificate of mailing. This proves you mailed the device just encase the insurance try to claim they never got it. Then it will be between them and the post office. You cannot send it back with tracking because they send it to a PO Box and the phone can't be tracked. NICE I know. My mom sent one back no certificate and they claimed they never got it. My mom is not a thief so it must of got lost. Just like in the song.. I most of got lost.. most of got lost.... anyway you know the song.

Family of 5, we've been with Sprint for 11 years, they're not locking me into anything, we're paying low for the plan we have. I started a new line to get this phone, I just hope I can get one without the cosmetic defects.

Nope you can get new or refurbished by either insurance or warranty replacment. I've gotten both so I know.

Like I was saying, there is no deductible for manufacturer defects.
You only pay a deductible IF
1. There is physical damage to the phone (cracked screen, you shot it with a gun whatever)
2. Water Damage (Don't take it swimming with you)
3. Loss or Theft
So if the phone stopped working 3 months from now because you have TEP you can walk into a sprint repair center (again it has to be a repair center) go to the counter tell them your problem. They will test it where to see if they can fix it or not, if the problem actually exists, and to make sure it's not because of physical or water damage. Once you meet those requirements they order a replacement phone and if you went early enough in the day you generally will have it the next business day. You will either get a refurbished or brand new phone depending on what's in stock. I have no problems with refurbs they've always looked brand new, of course I agree in the first 30 days you should never get a refurb. All that without a deductible paid.

Yeah, a refurb phone is fine just as long as it doesn't cost me $100, 0 cosmetic defects would be nice too. I have never handle the phone badly but I noticed scratches on the kickstand, and I have never slid the phone on any surface. Hope this does not void the replacement policy, that would be ridiculous.
I'm new to getting a new phone, I've had only hand me downs(2 of them) up until the Evo.
thanx for all the reply's after reading some tiny letters on the envelope I confirmed that i need to stay with the battery.
anyways yes I didn't like the idea of the insurance paying $7 monthly + 100 deductible, so when i got the phone i did not add the insurance i always threat smart phones like babies to the point that I don't even put my phone, even with the sprint gel skin on hard surfaces without a shirt or whatever i can find.
but yes even if you carry your phone on a bubble accidents can happen and it happened to me sadly, almost cried. I called added the insurance and waited few days and claimed. I didn't care to much holding a cmda phone with a shattered screen so reported the truth phone broke.
I was hoping for a brand new evo, but I am satisfied with the refurb one Its in perfect condition and like i said not even the one i got from radio shack was in this condition because it had screen separation issue.
I am pretty sure this refurnished phones get through a very strict inspection before going out in the market again, and from what i can think of its more rigid than the one on brand new phones lol.
I am pretty sure and believe me i tried almost everything to get a new one with the 30 day guarantee, but not sure maybe is different in the states, but 30 days warranty will only cover manufacturer defects (fabrication) like the screen sep or something like that and maybe it can happen but it will be very hard for a screen get completely shattered for itself, unless maybe battery exploded or something. and still.
thanx zone23 that's a good idea i was wondering about that but didn't knew about mail certificates. I will be doing that tomorrow.

Dropped my phone, am I screwed?

So I dropped my phone 2 feet and it exploded and the screen is done. I'd post pictures, but it makes me sad.
I've had the phone for 40 days or so, what can I do to not have to pay $550 for a new phone? Add insurance and wait a month? If I add the insurance what would it cost me per month and for a new phone?

As far as I know, you can only add Sprint TEP during your first 30 days. Check your credit card for accidental damage protection (Amex has 1 year extended warranty and 90 days accidental damage).
Repairing the screen probably won't be $550, but will be very expensive.
I'm sorry for your loss. As far as I know you can only sign up for insurance within a certain period of time after recieving the phone. I think you are past that timeframe.
I don't think there are any replacement screens available yet for replacing the glass yourself. You could search for something like that if you are the brave type, or look for a place that will repair it for you. But again, I don't think replacement parts are available yet.
In my opinion, if you want to avoid buying an expensive new phone I would buy the cheapest CDMA phone you can get from sprint (or Ebay) and wait until parts are available for the EVO.
Without insurance you are pretty screwed. You can try adding it to your Sprint account now and see if they will let you and wait 40 days or so to file a claim.
Either that or pony up the cash for one on ebay.
Amex protection, while they are amazing, will only cover what you spent on the phone.
So if you got the phone for $199, they will reimburse you what you spent on it, not the cost of the replacement at $499.
I went through this with my wifes Pre. Dog ate it after 80 days. Amex said they would give me $199 for it (what I spent) but would need the damaged phone as proof. It would cost me $499 for a new Pre. Luckily I had insurance. I asked Amex if they would pay the $100 deductible for the insurance, but my insurance company would want the damaged phone to see if they could repair it.
They immediately credited my account $100 and was happy about it. They did not need the phone back.
I buy everything on Amex. Everything.
But in your case you have two options. Buy a new phone, or try to get away with insurance fraud.
I thought I read a post somewhere on here where someone found the front glass for sale for like $130.
So Sprint added the insurance to my plan and told me it was active as of today. So I'm covered apparently, anyone know what it will cost me to use that insurance?
It was $100 for me.

You live and learn
Luckily Sprint allowed you to add the insurance past your 30 day mark. I understand that insurance can be added "anytime", but I guess they fed me a line of B.S. when they warned me that after my 30-trial period, I couldn't add it.
Either way...$100 is a heck of a lot better then having to dish out the full price of the phone.
If you ever need insurance activate an old phone online then activate the one you need insurance on. It will let you add it then. It needs to be able to power on and join the network though.

Why? I have Total Equipment Protection (the best plan) and it is $7 per phone per month.
if sprint ever tells you that you can't add insurance tell them it's in the contract which it is, as long and they didn't kick you off because of too many claims ( i think 3 or more a year) they have to let you add it
If you would have gone to a service and repair store like mine, you would have been charged a $119 fee and then we could either replace the damaged parts if we have them, or order you a replacement. Then you could also add insurnace after that as well.
Best thing is that the Evo is not hard at all for us to work on. The only hard part would be getting a screen. I can have one taken apart and swap a screen in probably 15 to 20 minutes.

Sprint replace EVO WITHOUT charging a deductible?

So, In December I gave away my EVO, and picked up an Epic 4G Touch. Temporarily, im going back to the EVO (my moms) and plan on selling my E4GT to get as much money as I can for it now. My Epic is in pristine condition. And, its going to suck going back to an EVO, especially a beat up one. I do have full insurance. What are the chances that Sprint replaces it? Buttons stick. Maybe cracked in a few places. Do they still give out EVO's as replacements?
Insurance is not through sprint, it's through asurion. Sprint only deals with warranty claims, and since the damage on your phone is physical damage, your warranty is void, so you have to go through insurance.
And the chances of getting a replacement from Asurion without paying a deductible? Absolutely ZERO. Not sure why people think they are entitled to things for free...
And they may still have evo's, and they may not, it's pretty much week to week. If they don't have evo's you will likely get an evo 3d.
I pay for the insurance every month. I remember once time i dropped my phone and the screen cracked. I brought it to sprint and they said they will fix it....I waited there for 20 minutes and they came back out with a new phone for me and said it will cost 30 bucks, i paid cashed and i didnt get any sort of reciept or anything. very odd, but what ever.
In the summer i dropped my phone again and cracked the screen. I had to go thru aurison and had to pay 100 bucks and send in my old phone. Although i paid 100 bucks, its better than paying 500 for a brand new phone!
I think its a little odd how sprint does its insurance. My mom had an issue where her phone wouldn't connect to wifi and sprint made her go thru aurison and pay 100 bucks. kinda dumb.

I think the time you only paid $30 bucks, the guy pocketed that cash. Neither Sprint nor Asurion saw any part of that, but who cares, he fixed your phone and it cost you less than Asurion would have charged you.
I know guys at stores who do that stuff all the time. The no receipt is a dead giveaway.
Was about to say the same. I have had sprint replace the screen numerous times in the last 17mo. Never cost me a dime. Nor did the camera lens or speaker or bezel replacements they have performed in-store. I think you got hosed. I'd go ask for a refund if I were you, but alas, no receipt was given (first clue)

My wife replaced her phone just a little while ago through asurion, they sent her a Evo Design. She likes it, I would be pissed. So it looks like they might be out of EVO's. Now, I'm sure there will be 3 or 4 people saying "Oh I just got an EVO from them" cause that's the way the internet works. All I'm saying is, that's what happened to me.
I also heard that you can find new Evo's for as cheap as $50. I didn't look, that's just what my coworker told me from the last time he went to the Sprint store.

It's not that bad actually... No deductible, you can get a loaner phone... So if you can deal with an LG Optimus or the like for a few days... Its okay. Only caveats are no total immersion coverage... no coverage for theft or loss. If it's a warranty issue they still handle it the same. I took my design in because it went swimming in the toilet. It was operational but I didn't want a toilet phone... so I told them I spilled a beverage on it. Only problem was they didn't take out the sim card, as it's a world phone, and the replacement didn't have one. So i went to the sprint store and they gave me a new one.
I figured I've never lost a phone or had it stolen and I've broken screens on EVERY phone I've had... So i like the zero deductible.

I've had the same experience, I've had TEP since the day I bought my phone in Aug. of '10. In April of last year I dropped the Evo onto a tile floor and the screen shattered like a spider web, terrible. I took the phone to a non-corporate Sprint store/repair shop and when they looked up info on their computer the young lady said, "Oh, no charge, you have TEP". An hour later I had my phone back with a new screen. I was given a receipt that showed I had insurance and under charges it said: $0.00.
In Jan. of this year my phone had another broken screen and again I took it to the non-corporate owned Sprint sales/repair store and again they installed a new screen, gave me a receipt that had charges: $0.00. I was very pleased with Sprint and the repair station.
On Thursday my phone was in a leather clip on case hooked to my pants pocket when the case with phone in it fell to the floor. I picked it up and saw there was a single, diagonal break-line in the lower half of the screen. The non-corporate store I had used two times before had closed so I went to the Corp. store where I make all my phone purchases. (Sprint customer for over 13 years now) The "salesman" looked at the phone and told me, "We can fix it, pay us $100 and the screen will be replaced". I explained to him about the two times before the screen had been broken and it was fixed under TEP for NO CHARGE. He acted like I was an idiot and told me Sprint has NEVER replaced broken screens without charging $100. I again informed him of the two times mine had been replaced and he acted like he didn't believe me then told me if it had been fixed for no charge the people screwed up. I called a Manager over and related the story to him, his only answer was to show me a brochure saying that Asurion charges $100 to replace screens with large breaks in them. (as an aside: what in the hell difference does it make if the screen has a 1/2" break in the center of a screen or a 3"? The screen has to be replaced either way)
I left that Sprint store and drove to a corporate repair/sales store. The guy at the desk gave me the same spiel, "Sprint has always charged $100 to replace a screen". By this time I was getting angry, I held my temper and told him when I get this straightened out I'd drop in to inform him how things work. Today I researched and found there is a single non-corporate owned Sprint repair center in this city. They are closed today but I'm going there tomorrow to see if they will work with me.
What bothers me deeply is you, Scottspa74 have had the same experience I have several times. The broken screen is replaced with no charge. I read on this forum and the Sprint Users forum over and over again, "Sprint charges $100 to replace a screen under TEP-Asurion, always been that way, read the brochure and you'll see". What I DO know just as you DO is that we've had screens replaced several times with no charge. There was no crooked deal where we were asked to pay cash and given no receipt. Both times I received a printed out receipt giving all my Sprint info that showed I had insurance, and the charges were $0.00. I learned about the "no charge" policy either on XDA or SprintUsers last year so other people besides the 2 of us have replaced for no charge.
If I seem frustrated I am. What's worse is Radio Shack had the Evo4G LTE on sale through Saturday for $100 and I had made up my mind to get one and give up my all time favorite phone, the Evo4G. Now I'm waiting as I've got to fix the Evo OG so I can sell it.
If you or anyone has any ideas please pass them on. As I said, I'm going to the privately owned repair store tomorrow if at all possible.
Thanks,
D
The only problem I see with bringing it in to a sprint store is you have to unroot, or go to a stock, but that all depends on who's fixing your phone

If you were replying to me: The two times I took my rooted phone into a contracted Sprint repair shop they complimented me on my ROM and asked which one it was, so no problem there. When my screen become unresponsive in May I unrooted the EVO and installed the HTC Rom before taking it into the corporate store. The phone was exchanged with no charge as I said earlier. It was a malfunction of the phone hardware/screen and not a shattered screen problem.

It's 3$ for a digitizer on Amazon you can fix it yourself if you ever crack your screen

Broke/Cracked screen replacement

Don't think for a minute that it cost a lot for a screen....There may be high sales now but soon the true cost will be no more than $80.00. Remeber true cost for many phones to OEMS like Apple is $65-100.00. What do you guys think! Here are a few links that I came up with for LCD, and digitizer replacement. I am on t-mobile and got insurance for $7.99/month. For ~$100 per year it will pay for itself for two years if I replace the phone once.
Insurance is worth it imo because screen damage is only one possible problem. There is also water damage, theft or other defects that may present themselves after the manufacturer warranty expires.

Yes but carriers may soon have parts to replace screens for like free or a small fee. I paid 35.00 to replace my EVO 4g cracked screen

Last time I checked Squaretrade was a much better option, but doesn't cover theft. It's only offered for the first 30 days of ownership. Also, the deductible for both is very high.

Oh I didn't know that. That is a good deal if you can get them to do it.
Ouch I didn't know there was a $150 deductible. Now I am regretting signing up for it. :crying:

Don't think for a minute that it cost a lot for a screen....There may be high sales now but soon the true cost will be no more than $80.00. Remeber true cost for many phones to OEMS like Apple is $65-100.00. What do you guys think! Here are a few links that I came up with for LCD, and digitizer replacement. Feel free to post and add more for those in need that will be organized into one thread.

Ensquared is $58.99 for 1 year of coverage and they cover everything including spills, drops, loss and theft. Their deductible is $75.

I used to work for them. A lot of people assume that they get their phone replaced with a new one in-store, but they don't. It gets shipped out and repaired if possible. Cracked screens are almost always repaired. They try their hardest to avoid giving the customer a new phone. But if they have replace the phone, it's a refurb. If there are no replacements available, they get store credit for the amount they paid for the phone.

This information is very outdated as it has changed a bit ago. The phone gets sent out (you can get a loaner phone if available for $50. This gets refunded when the loaner is returned). Usually within 1-5 business days you get your replacement phone (same model).

Soon? Psssh yeah right, not believable for a minute when a t959 vibrant (gs1) LCD screen replacement is $89 + free shipping and a t989 gs2 is $149 + free shipping, both from amazon and is the cheapest I have found.. which is about the same pricing as LCD replacement sites from China and wholesale sites like Alibaba and Aliexpress.
True though, their wholesale price should be about 3x less than retail but I've been searching extensively for weeks and there are no wholesalers selling for anything less than what I've stated above. It will be years until we see LCD screens for the gs3 at a respectable price, like claimed in the OP. By then the value of the gs3 will become greatly depreciated from what it is today since higher end phones will be available.
P.S none of those links work

My screen cracked, don't even know how. Then two more small cracks developed while the phone was in my pocket for a few hours.
I mean, wtf.

Just noticed I have several scratches on my screen. I didn't notice until today when I showed my phone off to my brother. He's like man u scratched it up already! I'm like no wtf. Look at it...scratches. I dont have a screen protector but I've only had it two days and I keep it in a leather holster. Don't know how the hell it happened just after two days...FML!

Do you buy insurance on your phone?

Never had, was thinking about it. I've never lost a phone or anything like that before

I've had BestBuy black tie insurance and it's been pretty decent for instances when my phone stopped working. (This was 2 years ago, but I'll tell you how Best Buy handled my insurance.)
My Epic 4G stopped working so I went to the BestBuyMobile store. They took my phone, and replaced it with a refurb for free (took 2 days for them to order a refurb.) BestBuy's insurance is $10/month but there's no deductible. So even if you smash the screen by running over it with a semi-truck, they'll still replace it for free.
The other insurance that I currently have is Radioshack insurance. They've been pretty awesome for me. Shortly after I got my Galaxy s3, I had a water incident (bottom half of the device completely submerged in water). The battery started dying very quickly so I asked Radioshack if they could send me a new battery. I even told them I got it wet and they didn't have any spare batteries at the time because of how new the s3 was, so they wrote me an $80 check to buy myself a new battery.) Shortly after, I realized the device also needed to be replaced so I had filed another claim and they replaced my phone with a NEW one! Included another battery, too! Only part was it cost me $100 deductible. Still, very impressed with Radioshack insurance. I pay $7 a month for it.
~Bear in mind, neither of these insurance packages protect against lost or stolen.
Nice! Thanksf or the reply
I keep "TEC" on my Verizon phone.
If there is no damage, they just send you a phone with no deductible.
Bad, USB.. Here is another phone. Bad battery (non-removable). Here is another phone.
No insurance claims unless damaged, lost or stolen.
I used to have assurion thru Verizon and was real good (50 copay). Now its up to 100 so I didn't get it on g2

I have it through Jump on T-Mobile. I don't keep phones longer than 6 months.
