I upgraded the firmware on my X10 to R2BA020 (Rogers) last weekend, and have noticed that ever since, using maintaining 3G data connection seems to drain my battery much quicker than it used to under the same conditions.
I tend to tether my X10 to my laptop using PdaNet over USB at work. Whereas doing so under the old 014 stock firmware would result in my battery dropping from 95% to 55-60% over the coarse of my 9-5 workday, it now drops to 50-55% by noon, and I find myself having to turn off PdaNet by 2pm in order to let my battery recharge to acceptable levels for the evening.
I have verified that my X10 is indeed charging over the USB connection to my laptop, and nothing other than the firmware has changed. So I'm not quite sure what the issue might be.
Any ideas?
Hi,
I used to be on pda net until I got rooted. Try barnacle. Search this form u will find some information.

I'll have to give that a try if I decide to root my X10. Still waiting for some of the bugs/issues to get sorted before I do so.
Also, I'd take it you'd keep your X10 charging while running Barnacle, as both 3G and WiFi radios I'd think would drain your battery right quick.
Any heat problems with such a setup? My X10 can get pretty warm while charging (48-degrees celcius average battery temp while tethered with PdaNet).

I have rooted with BA20 version I haven't use the latest 23 version because Im very happy with my X10 now and its setup. No more moxier, asian keyboards and other unnecessary stuff. and im very happy with battery life.
when I have pdanet, I didnt use it for a long time. but with barnacle Im even using to type this on the forum
but always im plugged in to my laptop via usb to charge when im accessing barnacle. and Im using set CPU at 575MHZ on screen off and 41C overheating cap for my processor. so far due to this I didn't got any waring.
based on my experience, barnacle is way better and easy to use (faster download speed too) than pdanet.
But have to appreciate pdanet as that was the only option I had when im not rooted.

Please no now scold me I searched around and I couldn't find it even called t-mobile and tried to contact HTC. So basically when I tether my g1 with pda net I watch my temperature from a baseline of 83F jump all the way to almost 110F. Does anyone know what would be a bad battery temperature. Or abreast point me in the right direction to find this info. Thanx
the battery is charging because of the usb connection (obviously) plus you are probably using the 3g radio at full range and there should be some cpu usage for the tethering app so there you go ...
don't worry though nobody has fried any phone to date, from high temperature.
You should be ok.
i tether all the time. i never check my temp, but i have noticed it gets very hot. i would say if you are worried about it then don't tether. tethering uses the wifi+radio(internet)+charging+tethering app+all background stuff, the temp is gonna rise just like the temp of your laptop rises as you use it more and run more things at a time. the phone doesn't really have a great cooloing system
Haha I have a silicone case on my phone, when tethering the case can just slide right off because it has expanded so much from the heat.

This is true and thats why I take out the battery cover when ever im just in my hotel room but its normal to get that hot while tethering.
Thanx
Thanks guys for all the responses. I kinda figured that the temp rose because of the wifi, the screen not timing out, as well as the usb charging the fone. But none the less I jus wanted to make sure. Thanx again all!

You might want to try tethering using bluetooth instead of wifi. bt uses significantly less power and thus generates less heat.
So, OCLF breaks the vibration on JI6 and while Ryan figures out the problem (I already gave him a logcat) I decided to remove it.
My verdict so far without running any lagfix whatsoever, stock JI6 and the stock kernel is that the phone is tons smoother than what it has ever been. If I didn't know better I could swear that a lagfix was installed solely based on my prior experiences before and after installing one.
Whatever Samsung did in JI6 really helped out. Now, if you run a quadrant you will still get scores within the 900s but that doesn't seem to have any bearing on how fast the phone runs.
I remember when running stock JFD that my phone would constantly freeze while even trying to wake it. Really embarrassing when trying to show off to your friends
Anyhow, so far I'm really satisfied with just the stock rom, although I do have root. My only problem so far is the battery. I believe there is something wrong with the modem that it drains the battery way too fast. As a test, I have been streaming Pandora via Wi-Fi for 2 hours. The battery has only gone down 10%. While using 3G, that battery would have been decimated.
So, does anyone want to take a wild guess at what Samsung did to make JI6 faster? The UI doesn't seem to have been changed and it is still RFS.

Uh....decimated? As in reduced by 10%?
Sorry couldn't resist. No idea what's different.
I was saying, that if I were using 3G the battery would have dropped well below 10%. The other day I was using 3G just to browse the web and the battery literally dropped to about 74% in 30 mins. That was when I was using Bionx 1.5 or 1.6.
I'm understanding the JI6 will be about 160MB, so is it feasible to attempt an OTA at my data rate? Mostly, I'm concerned about battery life during the download. Can an unfortunate Slowbie like me just leave the device connected to the charger during the download?
Thanks guys...Stock Vibrant in Kansas

It will charge much faster than it will drain.it should work fine.

If you have a good enough connection (both signal and at the network) it should take maybe 2 hours or more. You can leave it on the charger and not worry about it.
Yes, but I'm concerned that the install might fail in some way because the phone is in a charging state. Anyone forsee any problems that are likely?
No that won't be the reason. If it fails it will be the cause of something else.
i have updated my G1, Cliq, and Cliq XT ota in the past while on Edge network with no problem. During the update, I left them connected to the charger to make sure my battery did not die and they completed in about an 45 minutes or so. you should be able to proceed with no problems
Thanks All for the input! Now if I could just get that little notification thingy to appear...hehe
Hi guys i know there are lots of similar posts about battery life etc but cant find the answer im looking for after a search of this forum as all answers seem to be on rooted devices, she does not want her x8 rooted and im really getting it in the neck for upgrading her in the first place lol.
My girlfriend recently got the 2.1-update 1 via pc companion and thats when the battery problems started. The battery drain problem has actually been getting progressively worse since this. This morning (after yet another full night charging 100%) after 30 mins of getting up today the battery was down to 83 %. I have already uninstalled maps updates, not that she ever used it anyway.
So my question is : is there a solution to this without rooting and/or having a custom ROM? becuase she making my life a misery lol.
Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the similar post

Well, 1st thing as Dx said. reboot after using wifi, 3g, music. reboot to make everything fresh.. but there's no other way to save battery without rooting I think. because I helped my gf installed a custom ROM for her and she said that the battery life changed, and it's way different than a original ROM. How come she doesn't wanna go custom? Sorry for my bad english.

Agree with you!
Nah, rooting makes the difference. IMO Froyo ROMs have good battery life.
Well i think she might well have to go custom because the battery life is a joke now, nearly rendering her device unusable, think she just frightened cos i did her pc companion update and kinda blames me for the crap battery now, il have a read around the x8 forum on how to root.
Thanks everyone, apreciate it
Just try to keep off all things you don't need: Wifi, Bluetooth, Synchronization, 3G. also unninstall apps you don't need and do not use app killers to save RAM.
I think that is all you can do without rooting.

My friend, less RAM is actually a good thing. I've read through the web. just don't auto kill ALL the apps, kill those apps that when it doesn't look right or freezes. The more RAM you freed, the more battery it will drain. Serious.

I'm just a noob trying to help.
use a task killer and disable all what you don't need like bluetooth, data traffic, gps and wifi. yes i know my english is bad^^
disable wifi, gps, bluetooth and data traffic. stock 2.1update rom should get you about 3 days with those disabled. any apps that need them will ask you to switch them on again anyway. It's a little annoying to get used to at first especially when you're used to a fone that lasts a week without charge so I can understand how she feels especially if she only wants to text and do a few calls.
If you don't use wifi, 3g gps and rest of the s**t you should probbably buy a dumy phone.
With some "normal" usage you can be happy if it lasts for a day/day and a half.
2-3 is really success.
You do get a charger in the box with the phone you know?
Use your phone, stop wasting time on battery monitoring.

yeah but the idea is it's a MOBILE fone.. You dont want it plugged into the damn socket all the time!
If you need to use the GPS, WIFI etc. the app will ask you to switch it on so wheres the harm in turning it all off until it's required if it saves having to plug the thing in every day?!?
Nobody stated you should keep all the functions on.
But it should be understandable that, with some "normal" use, and by normal I mean regular texting, phonecalls, check facebook/twitter, refresh weather app, read mail and some news maybe you can't expect your battery to last 7 days like on dummy nokia.
Besides, you all forget that your biggest battery killer is the screen.
And another thing I noticed; when LED starts to glow green, your battery isn't fully charged. Check phone status. It becomes green after passing 90% I think, or so.
And the second thing I noticed is a HUGE differenc when charging the phone while it's on, for a hour and a half when the battery metter reaches 100% and when I turn it off and leave it charging over night.
The "night" option proved to be a lot better (battery lasts longer, doesn't fall so fast) + Every once in a while it is good to fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it.

Yeah, but that mobile phones have long since ceased to be just phones.
Switch off everything you can : wifi, brighteness, gps etc. Also you can make a profile "screen off " in setcpu and set it to 122mhz . it will save you a lot of battery! It drains just 1% after 5 hours ( but i didnt use my phone) . Hope it help.
Oh yeah and use the app called " fast reboot " it is so good is well and it speed up our lovely x8
When i used these things , my phone lasts in a week or more of.course i nearly didnt use my phone.

Seeing as I don't have enough posts to post over in the development forum, I thought I'd hijack this thread.
I installed this rom last week and at first, the batter was brilliant. It lasted for three days but now I have to charge it twice a day. I have bluetooth off, wifi off more often than not, brightness down very low.
The phone was 5hrs on battery and was down to 44%.
Cell Standby: 35%
Display: 20%
Phone Idle: 19%
Launcher Pro: 13%
Anyone have any ideas?
I also experienced the same problem ... especially with the overclocked conditions
Loving my phone again. It feels like a new device. I can't believe how snappy and responsive everything is now. I can't believe it's the same phone.
But I might have to get something different, for 2 reasons:
1. My battery life is horrendous. It was better on 2.1
2. My USB connection (on the phone) is going bad, so sometimes it doesn't charge or gives me a hard time. Very frustrating.
It really sucks because I really like my phone now.
1. Battery is better than Android 2.1
2. We have no problem on the USB storage or USB charging.

Did you try original SEUS update, not some crappy custom stock rom... because they suck the battery, and are over-tweaked.
I'm running my own modded stock GB with doom kernel and it is absolutely amazing.
Three days battery with medium usage.
Also don't use task managers, the bravia engine or any other crap. They all drain the battery. Leave it as it is.
@ op
1. battery is better on 2.3
2. as you said your charging/data port is kinda broken so its not related to GB
i dont see why people complain so much about battery life
you can always turn stuff off to save battery and get 2-3+ days out of it...but why?
As long as i get about 18hrs then i am happy....when i am asleep i put the phone on charge.
Whats the point of the phone sitting where ever not on charge and your asleep??
I'm on stock Rogers ROM 2.3.3. Nothing modified on the phone. I have about 34 extra apps installed, no task killer or task manager running. The only thing that I keep turned on is my bluetooth. Everything else is off and the screen brightness is on auto (not the brightest setting because that kills your battery even faster).
I send about 5000 to 6000 text messages a month (so give or take 160 to 200 per day). I do some light Facebook and some light internet stuff. The battery seems to be worse now compared to 2.1 (maybe it's just in my head).
