JI6 update with Edge connection - Vibrant General

I'm understanding the JI6 will be about 160MB, so is it feasible to attempt an OTA at my data rate? Mostly, I'm concerned about battery life during the download. Can an unfortunate Slowbie like me just leave the device connected to the charger during the download?
Thanks guys...Stock Vibrant in Kansas

It will charge much faster than it will drain.it should work fine.

If you have a good enough connection (both signal and at the network) it should take maybe 2 hours or more. You can leave it on the charger and not worry about it.

Yes, but I'm concerned that the install might fail in some way because the phone is in a charging state. Anyone forsee any problems that are likely?

No that won't be the reason. If it fails it will be the cause of something else.

i have updated my G1, Cliq, and Cliq XT ota in the past while on Edge network with no problem. During the update, I left them connected to the charger to make sure my battery did not die and they completed in about an 45 minutes or so. you should be able to proceed with no problems

Thanks All for the input! Now if I could just get that little notification thingy to appear...hehe

PdaNet with R2BA020

I upgraded the firmware on my X10 to R2BA020 (Rogers) last weekend, and have noticed that ever since, using maintaining 3G data connection seems to drain my battery much quicker than it used to under the same conditions.
I tend to tether my X10 to my laptop using PdaNet over USB at work. Whereas doing so under the old 014 stock firmware would result in my battery dropping from 95% to 55-60% over the coarse of my 9-5 workday, it now drops to 50-55% by noon, and I find myself having to turn off PdaNet by 2pm in order to let my battery recharge to acceptable levels for the evening.
I have verified that my X10 is indeed charging over the USB connection to my laptop, and nothing other than the firmware has changed. So I'm not quite sure what the issue might be.
Any ideas?
Hi,
I used to be on pda net until I got rooted. Try barnacle. Search this form u will find some information.

I'll have to give that a try if I decide to root my X10. Still waiting for some of the bugs/issues to get sorted before I do so.
Also, I'd take it you'd keep your X10 charging while running Barnacle, as both 3G and WiFi radios I'd think would drain your battery right quick.
Any heat problems with such a setup? My X10 can get pretty warm while charging (48-degrees celcius average battery temp while tethered with PdaNet).

I have rooted with BA20 version I haven't use the latest 23 version because Im very happy with my X10 now and its setup. No more moxier, asian keyboards and other unnecessary stuff. and im very happy with battery life.
when I have pdanet, I didnt use it for a long time. but with barnacle Im even using to type this on the forum
but always im plugged in to my laptop via usb to charge when im accessing barnacle. and Im using set CPU at 575MHZ on screen off and 41C overheating cap for my processor. so far due to this I didn't got any waring.
based on my experience, barnacle is way better and easy to use (faster download speed too) than pdanet.
But have to appreciate pdanet as that was the only option I had when im not rooted.

Charging the T-Mobile G2

Now why is the phone charging yet battery level doesn't go up but down very slowly WTF?, also I have this problem very frequently where it just doesn't charge at all! But this time it isn't charging its discharging even with the charging sign SMH, anyways who else got this problem?
This phone is so lucky there isn't another htc phone with a real keyboard that looks as classy and has the latest GPU processor (I swaer these are the only things that is keeping me with this phone) in tmo other than the G2, and no not the mytouch 3g slide, it is outdated already small 3.4 screen, thicker than G2, older GPU (adreno 200) so nop not that one lol the glacier seems to sport a real qwerty keyboard but not much is known so it is too far away from now.
do u have wifi turned ON when you charge? If so, try turning OFF wifi and charging it.. you should see a difference
You didn't have Navigation running, by chance, did you? I remember my Nexus One couldn't keep up with the stock car charger and got nice and warm while Navigation was running. You might also want to try rebooting; there may be an app that's drawing a lot of CPU time and killing the battery faster than it can be charged.
System Process "YES" Running G2 phone down?
So I did some digging last night and noticed that this system process was running my phone at 100% cpu usage all the time... System Process YES. Anyone know what the hell this is for and why it is having such a negative impact on my G2? I am at wits end here I want to find out if it is me before I call in to T MOE AGAIN.

It is unlikely to be wifi directly. In my experience wifi uses less than 3G. I have been leaving my wifi on nonstop since the initial reports that T-Mo may be going to a (firmer) softcap of 5Gb, which I go over every month currently even without tethering. I have had no problems whatsoever with charging.
I think the advice to reboot and see if the charging problem still occurs afterwards might be the better suggestion. It could be a rogue app maxing out CPU time or perhaps continually probing GPS, though I am not sure if GPS alone would be enough to tip the scales.
Nop I got nothing on no navigation or wifi, but now it seem to be charging even tho very slowly.
You could always try powering off the phone when you charge it.
Got the same problem with my T-Mo G2...
Now it isn't charging / powering up anymore :|
Possibly a stupid question, but are you using the stock charger? Most other chargers do not provide as much current and may not be able to keep up with the phone's power usage.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Also, keep in mind that if you're charging via USB (via laptop or PC) you're not going to get as much charging current versus using the AC adaptor.
I'm using the stock charger that came with the device and the stock MicroUSB cable connected to the charger.
Also tried with HTC HD2's charger.
Man I just hope this gets fix with the OTA update, but wouldn't this be a hardware issue so it can't be fix with update?
This phone by far is the wierdest most problematic device I've ever had in my life, but at the same time the best lol

Wow and the charging problem continues smh, its now stuck on the small red bar not going to the yellow or green been charging for 2 hours and its only @ 15%, and the replacement shipping had issues so the 2 day shipping I paid for did not happen so now ill have to wait by Monday and I order the 2 day shipping on Friday. Lucky me I did demand them to waive the 20 dollar fee for the 2 day shipping since I did not get the shipping in 2 days so they did waive the fee

I agree. Get Watchdog from the Market and leave it running. You have something killing your CPU; I'm pretty sure it's a rogue app.

Just so you guys are aware most laptop usb ports do not supply enough power to charge your phone efficeintly. Most have a high power usb port with an icon to indicate this which is what u should charge from.
Iv noticed if I use a regular port my phone bearly charges.
Let me know if this helps!

Battery Life since Sprint update.

Anyone see worse battery life out of thier tab since the sprint update? I could normally use it for a day in a half before I would have to jump on a charger. I used it yesturday and at the end of the day the battery looked good still. This morning it wouldnt even power on. I did have it in my backpack in my truck. Not sure if that effected it. Just ordered some extra charging cables and a mobile charger for it...
sprint ota slow 3g and battery drain
YES.
Just came searching for this from my wife's sprint sgt. Also, 3g has become TERRIBLE. trying to figure out how to un-fuxor this OTA. wifi still works great... gonna try flushing all the radios and prl and such..
sorry i'm late to the party, you have any news?

The only way you could have that on a stock battery is have the phone off and battery pulled out for 34 hours.
I'm getting a lot better life with the overclocked kernal and midnight eb13. 8hrs of moderate usage and was only down to 55%. I'm loving it.

keep an eye on your TWS. This has been a huge issue for me, and keeps draining the life out of the battery. Only solution so far seems to be the ariplane mode toggle work around.
I was able to make 30+ hours on a single full charge with dk28.
I still haven't put eb13 through its paces but from what I'm seeing, its great with battery.

if you all want better battery life then disable your data network ...the way to do this is hold down the power button ...just like you are turning your phone off, you will see the data network. hit that button..it will disable your internet constantly running in the back ground and also will disable notifications...you can turn it on at your discression when you want to check your email, internet, or anything pertaining to data network...but trust me this will give you alot more battery life..also you can install setcpu and clock it to run lower when your phone is charging, not in use , or even when you are using your phone...this also helps substantually...good luck guys

Very nice suggestions I'd also like to add that using Wifi will use a LOT less battery then 3G probably 80% of the time. At work I have poor reception so leaving 3G on will kill my battery, however WiFi it's not uncommon I leave work after 10 hours unplugged with only 20-25% of the battery used! Make sure to set the wifi sleep policy to never if you go this route, that way it never goes back to 3G even when sleeping.
Turning data off completely and using the phone only lightly all day at work (a few text messages) (10 hours unplugged) i've left work with 88% percent battery remaining
Battery life has improved greatly. I turn off background data, stop the Omadrmblablabla service, no live backgrounds, but it is full color. With moderate use I can see 10 hours and still have 40% before I go to bed.
My battery life has been greatly increased too. The battery indicator seems much more accurate too. I did the factory reset several times, then wiped and used the samsung installer.

I wish I could be as lucky as you. This is by far my biggest complaint with eb13. I have tried flashing multiple times to no avail. How did you update? odin, samsung exe, update zip, or ota?
I did an odin flash, and my battery is much better as well. On 2.1 stock I would usually get about 16 hrs with my usage. Now, with the same usage on EB13, I can get about 36hrs (charging every other night).
I did the zip update first, and my battery was awful and only lasted for 4 hours. But since the odin flash, everything is great!

Samsung exe. Did you update your profile and PRL? I had TWS issues until I did that. After updating the PRL I have been golden.

What's the tws bug that drains the battery? Airplane toogle does what?
But as for myself, I'm getting way better battery on eb13. I think some people have bad experiences sure to installing done apps rgat may run in the back ground. Do this test, reflash stock. Don't install any apps but what thee phone comes with. And use the phone for 2 days. Then you will notice rgat index outer does last longer.

I have tried that as well, no dice. Only the airplane toggle seems to fix it. I have to airplane toggle every time I boot up. Once I do that the TWS is around 2-5% which is normal for me.

exactly. If it does fix it (seems sporadic at best), it will not stay applied after a reboot.

TWS = time without signal. Airplane mode resets the radio on the device and somehow fixes it (albeit, temporarily). I read somewhere on here people believe it has something to do with the fact that, for some reason, the phone is looking for a gsm signal as well as cdma, and since this is not a gsm phone, it obviously can't find a gsm signal. The constant searching for gsm is causing a drain on the battery. This happens in areas with full sprint coverage, like my house. For whatever reason re-setting the radio forces it to stay on cdma mode only. I think i read someone saying something along the lines of it being a problem because this is was an update created for devices across the board, ie, for both cdma and gsm handsets. Its just a bug that needs addressed. Some people have it, some don't -- which is even more frustrating!
If you are not experiencing this problem, please tell me what method you used to update. I have only tried Odin (and update zip once), so I will try the samsung exe to see if it does anything.

Lollipop update giving HORRIBLE battery life

Anyone else had this problem?
I installed the stock 5.0 update (G900FXXU1BNL9) on my SM-G900F and now the battery life is terrible. I'm lucky if I can get it to last until the end of the day. Today, it's dropped to 50% within 5 hours. Before the lollipop update (again, was on whatever the latest stock version was), my battery life was superb, lasting almost two days!
Anyone know how to resolve this?
battery life
I've had my phone off the charger for less than one hour and I'm already down to 90%. There's definitely something wrong because stock lollipop unroot was giving me much better battery life and performance.

When your battery lasts less than HALF the time of what it used to all because of one update, something is seriously wrong.

well mine lasts a day now and it did then. so either you need to factory wipe, or you need to look at apps you've installed thats not quite optimised for lollipop
Yup, factory reset solves battery drain after LP update, I was up to day 3 without charging this morning with still 18% battery left, but had to charge up as I was going out, reckon it would have lasted the rest of the day though

I installed the update to lollipop..... After that indeed a horrible battery life. So I installed lollipop again using kies software......
Had same experience wipe and reload greatly helped. Supposed to be addressed in 5.1.
To add yet another subjective and anecdotal experience with the new S5 Lollipop update (on Verizon, in my case), I was seeing constant Wi-Fi disconnects (~5/minute) AND battery-life that went from ~15 hours to < 5 hours, until I turned off the "Smart Network Switch". Seems all the network switching was killing the battery as well. Did a FDR and it made no difference. As long as that feature is turned on, my Wi-Fi drops constantly and the phone heats up and the battery dies in a few hours, even without use.
Would be nice to know what I'm missing now that my phone is, apparently, using the Dumb Network Switch instead.

All you're missing now the phone is using the dumb network switch, is bad battery life, constant wifi disconnects, and headaches
I turned it off a while ago, and so have many more people I read about each day - it's supposed to keep you connected to the strongest signal, but in reality, it does the opposite, plus most people only have 1 wifi connection, so it's not necessary to smart switch - and even without it enabled, it will still connect to Data when it goes out of range of WiFi, so that switch is completely pointless to start with

Yeah, I kind of figured that. Sadly, I do have two wireless-access-points in my home to handle range-issues. I had not considered that this "feature" would have a bearing on the switching between them. I did test with one of them turned off, so I could eliminate that as a possible cause before I knew about this broken functionality, and it didn't matter of course.
Does it not seem a bit odd that testing didn't uncover that a Lollipop Galaxy S5, with Smart Network turned on, would kill the battery and render the Wi-Fi inoperable?
Oh well.

You could set up your two APs with the same SSID / Encryption key and have the phone switch seamlessly between them without smart network switch enabled

But yea, it seems that there are quite a few overlooked bugs with lollipop, 5.0.2 and 5.1 apparently address a lot of them, but when we get that update is anyones guess
