Hey, I was wondering whether I should update my X10 first, and THEN root, or root and THEN update?
Also, if I root my x10i, it will remain as x10i right? And if I root my x10a, it will remain as x10a right?
All I found so far are instructions to rooting; maybe I haven't read thoroughly enough though, could have missed out the information.

Root relies on a hole in an earlier firmware to be possible.
Root does not give you the firmware of your choice.
Root will not let your x10a be x10a... one of the step flashes the baseband to make it compatible with north american frequencies, another does some cosmetic adjustments so that the phone shows up as X10a.
So if I rooted my phone, and THEN update it, it's still rooted right?
And that means, my x10a will become an x10i that APPEARS to be x10a, with working frequencies?
Sorry, I just want to clarify things before I make any rash decisions and do something irreversible. >.>

If you update it after rooting... most probably you will loose the root.
If you follow the rooting guide then you will have the rooted phone with an X10i firmware which appears to be x10a (corrected 3g frequencies for north america)

i believe you are more concerning on the frequencies of the phone. The GSM frequencies are the same for both x10i and x10a. Only the UMTS frequencies (or 3G network bandwidth) are different, and I believe you do know this part.
The frequencies are hardware dependent so no matter what or how you change the baseband version it will not change the frequencies bandwidth. If you have an x10i phone, you will still get 900/1700/2100 bandwidth which only works for the cell phone providers who falls into these bandwith. If you have the x10a, you will still get the 800/850/1900/2100 quad-bandwidth which works for rogers network in canada, or AT&T network in the US.
Hope the above might give you some idea.

i just recently got a htc magic with the e911 update just wondering is this is rootable ?
I'm just wondering, have you searched?
Answer is No.
Ok so I got my shiney new HTC Magic from rogers, for f*cking free thanks to that deal that enabled dream owners to get the magic for free. I harassed for a month an a half. But I am loving it, I'm using it as my main phone. But I can't find anything on rooting the new update for the damn thing. Is there even a name for this update. I'm glad I signed that waiver for dream owners. Cuz if I did it for the dream, I would have a useless peice of ****. So as the first guy asked, where is the root?
I have search and i am unable to find a straight answer.

Straight answer: No.
If the update becomes rootable, it would be clear.
but I red that there was a work around like we have to make sure we have the same radio as the new update so like that rogers won't know we are rooted users and dont get the data cut off is that true or it's just bogus?

You need a rooted phone to get the work around. If you update to the newest update then there is no point in trying this loophole since you have the newest SPL and radio that they want you to have.
The newest update is not rooted.
If you have a Rogers Magic with the new update and ARE NOT using it in Canada on Rogers (ex: in US on ATT), can you change the ROM to a rooted ROM or am I just SOL on Wifi Tether?

That doesn't make much sense -- if the newest updated ROM (1.76.0010 for ROGERS) is not rooted, what makes you think you can change the ROM if your not in Canada? It's still the same unrooted SPL.
If you try using WiFi tethering, you are going to get billed up the ying yang with charges with roaming and tethering charges if you don't have a tethering package.

That is what I was asking, just didn't phrase it right. I've switched to 32A Magic from a MT3G to have 3G bands for AT&T. So far not impressed with this Rogers ROM, almost makes me want to deal with EDGE again just so I can use a ROM that I like. Thanks for your answer.

No problem. Just make sure you watch out for the tethering, heard some bad stories with ROGERS + tethering.
There are so many topics about this now.. you'd think Rogers would do something about it.
What could Rogers possibly benifit from "locking" this phone like this. Kinda takes away from the 'open-sourceness' of the device.

ROGERS just wants you to have their ROM with their applications. That is really all it's about. ROGERS says "we have to test out updates to see if they work with our network" but we all know it's bulls--t; you can flash any ROM and you still receive phone calls, SMS, MMS, internet and still get 3G with no additional billing or problems with your phone.
All they really want is to lock you down so you can't unlock your phone (therefore taking your phone to other providers). You bought the phone from ROGERS, ROGERS wants everyone to know that you are with ROGERS.
Im pretty sure HTC are the ones who locked it when they made this firmware update. Rogers didnt make the update.

Not really, it was probably at Rogers request. If carriers are going to do stuff like that (which they are entitled to), then HTC or Google should make unbranded versions available for people who want the phone, but aren't on that network.

ROGERS is the only one to have the 1.76.0010 SPL for a reason; paid for the SPL and branding on the ROM. They keep implimenting newer systems to try and block out non-ROGER ROMs. They want to lock it down, HTC didn't have to, they have no reason to.
You know what, come to think if it, ROGERS probably knows about the .29 kernal bypass for rooting and are reluctant to update to the newer kernal.
Food for thought!

What is this kernel bypass for rooting that you are talking about? Does it work on the new ROM with Sense?

It only works with the 2.6.29 kernel and it's a slim chance of it happening -- It's basically just brute-forcing root access. Magic 32A has the 2.6.27 kernel and does not have this bug allowing root access.
If you want to know more, search the forums.
just received my x10a from rogers.. still waitng on my unlock code. was curious if it's really worth it to bother with debranding my phone? other than the splash screen at bootup is there much rogers crap in there? and there's nothing on the outside which is great...

Well... suite yourself. Actually you are right. There isn't much which could classify as "crap" from Rogers.
But, who knows what Rogers is upto? Actually the question you should be asking yourself is: "If it is really worth it to bother to ROOT your X10a"
I'm on rogers too and I derbanded and rooted. It's not really that big of a hassle and you get to remove moxier and that's basically what I wanted to take off. Other than that, not much "crap" on the rogers firmware. So it's up to you. Don't really get much out of rooting other than being able to remove some apps and installing some apps that require root to work like set cpu and titanium backup.
To answer your question, no, it's not worth it since Rogers firmware does not contain much branded content. It only has:
1. Startup Rogers Screen
2. Rogers MyAccount (Good to use if you're on Rogers)
3. urMusic Plugin (in Mediascape, if it's unbranded, it's PlayNow)
4. Shop (?? don't use it)
That's pretty much it. The rest looks stock to me.
The better question is, is it worth it to ROOT the phone. That's a question you would need to ask yourself if you want it.
I personally don't see much of a reason to root either. For me, it is not complete root because the SPL (second program loader) has not been hacked yet. Without that access, custom roms based on higher versions of Android are not available.
well thanks for the reply's i'm def interested in root. but probably not until the bootloader has been hacked. however my biggest concern with debranding was having to wait longer for an OTA update. i don't mind seeing rogers when i start up the phone anyway.
Has anyone in the UK managed to get this firmware? If so how?
Don't think its out in the uk yet but I got the generic rooted version from xda!

Still waiting myself on Vodaphone UK, not rooted of course.
I couldn't wait so I went and rooted my Vodafone.. all good except I swear the fone has restarted a few times... and IMHO its not any quicker and haven't seen much improvement in battery :-(
I say wait for the update.. unless the bootloader gets cracked first ;-)

You don't need to do anything as dramatic as rooting to get the latest update.. you just need to debrand/ unbrand your phone.. which is easier, and allows you to stay on the "default" SE upgrade path without major faffing about each time!

Hi, just search "debranding" within the x10 forum, there's a few good threads to choose from.
My phone was purchased unbranded, so not had to go through that pain!

why is everyone so worried about getting 2.1 on an att x10?
use the x10a world generic 2.1 rom and flash it. it's not hard. rather simple.
Last time I flashed/rooted the X10a it got bricked with no 3G or WIFI. Unless you are aware of a full proof rooting/flashing kits I dont find it so simple.

Follow the guides as stated in the posts and you should be fine. There is some risk of course but, the X10 is very hard to brick. You can always repair using SEUS

i have an att x10a, i'm on my 3rd variant of 2.1 roms. infact, i'm running an x10i 2.1 rom right now.
don't rely on att, it won't happen.
Between bin4ry and z the flashing has gone smoothly for me. Once AT&T was out of the equation I had a brand new phone again. I wanted to keep X10a initially, but the X10i works just fine. I doubt AT&T will release 2.1, so XDA is our only hope.

I flashed my X10 like 30-40 Times with b4nary Flasher or with SE Update Engine and like 4-5 Times it was stuck on SE Screen but i can access the Flash Mode and then flashed new. Its very easy i even plugged out my X10 accidently while it was flashing new and its still working. Read everything 2 Times and make sure you flash right Files when you use b4nary Flasher or do it with -SE Update Engine you only need to change you Region Code in build.prop. Its not that hard you can always access Flash Mode even if you Phone gets stuck at SE Screen or something. But still be careful dont try all out only becouse i said this. Read Instructions good or ask someone to help you in MSN or some Chat and then you should do this with no Problem and dont need to wait for AT&T
What an informative and useful post!

Hello, I am currently on build number 2.1.1.A.0.6. I connected my phone to pc companion today and it notified me of a update! Anyone wanna take the plunge and let me know
can't you just backup you current settings on xrecovery and try the update yourself and report here?
it might be the 2.1.1.B update that'll make you go to baseband 6X.
Definitely not the GB update.
fake, i think.
just one day passed after ptcrb check. cant be the new fw available.
besides, se said 2.3 wont bi available for branded prones, generic only.
it may happen after you use the custom kernel
once i freshly flashed the .b.1 firmware
and i used Z`s kernel
the next day my phone come with a message that there`s a software update for me and can only be processed by pcc or us
i was really happy cause i think its the GB
but when i connect my phone with my pc
it says the new firm ware 2.1.b.0.1 can be used ...
its really funny
Phone is bootlooping, I will look for gingerbread on SEUS

No thats some #%@#$.... They never said it won't be available for branded phones, it will maybe not be available... In the Netherlands all branded phones will get the update Hi, Vodafone, KPN, MTV Mobile etc... all big providers... There is a good chance that some branded phones in other countries will also get the update And yes, SE NL confirmed it...

Sure it can be a new firmware.
It might be the 2.1.1.A.0.53 firmware.
And all major Swedish carriers (3, Telenor, Telia) also confirmed Gingerbread update for their branded X10's.
So the old statement that Sony Ericsson said about, only generic kits would get the update has been debunked by many carriers around the globe.
have any rogers customers updated to this yet.
Just curious as to what the baseband is
rogers from what ive spoken to them about they wont have any update from 2.1 > 2.3. and it seems they have no plans in doing so. unless they change their minds which they'll have to work too hard to put all their crap in on an "outdated" device to them, which they wont.
I am on Rogers and have an umodded phone running 2.1.1.A.0.6. It says I am running the latest software in both SEUS and the PC Compansion software so I don't seem to be getting this new update you speak of.
ya, with rogers as well... if u speak to one of their service reps or tech support any information they give you regarding an update to Gingerbread I would take as hear-say since they just dont know... you'd need to speak to someone working quite a bit higher up to get a real answer.
I just debranded my x10 yesterday to a generic, running the latest updates, waiting for Gingerbread to come out now so I can update to that.
