FCC comes through with a Consumer Broadband Test app for iPhone, Android and the home
We talk about the FCC a lot here, but usually the ways ye olde Commission affects our lives are indirect. A little extra spectrum here, a nice leaked image there, that kind of thing. Not this time, though, as the FCC is getting involved directly with its own Consumer Broadband Test app, designed to probe network latencies and download speeds on your home connection or mobile device. Part of the hallowed National Broadband Plan, this will furnish the FCC will useful data to show the discrepancy between advertised and real world broadband speeds, and will also -- more importantly perhaps -- serve as a neat way for users to directly compare network performance in particular areas. It's available on the App Market and App Store right now, with versions for other operating systems coming up, so why not get with the program and give it a test drive?

App works well for me - no FC or anything ran 4 consecutive tests on an EPE54B build using Modaco's kitchen.

Strange, the Developer is the same guy as the speedtest.net app and they look incredibly similar. I just thought it was weird to be backed by the U.S. Government. Seems good though.

2494 kb/s up
21 ms latency
FCC test:
2375 kb/s down
1913 kb/s up
43 ms latency
both times on Wi-fi and using the Dallas server.
I think the Speedtest.net has better eyecandy though.

So far testing is giving me the same results as the other one

Its the same app as the speedtest.net app. it even have the same gps bug...only diff is differrent servers i think.

For those with computers the site is broadband.gov
I guess I don't see any difference between this site and speedtest.net. Both provide download and upload speeds. Unless the govt site has some new govt tech that can tell if our ISP's are lying to us...

I think it's the *exact* same app, where the only difference is that the FCC one gives data to the FCC.

Data speeds on the Vibrant?

Coming from an N1, anyone noticing decreased data speeds? They both support 7.2 and T-Mo isn't above that, so shouldn't you see roughly the same?

wifi 9,842 down, 1,589 up best
3G 920 down, 602 up best
My n1 never seen above 5,200 down on wifi
my n1 never seen above 800 down and 550 up on 3g
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I have mine set for GSM atuo prl

Slightly faster data speeds and I run them all........the.............freaking.............time.
Not a world of difference from the N1 and it may only be a placebo effect but I'll put it this way: You certainly won't lose speed when you upgrade to this phone. First speed test went north of 3Mbps and that area consistently got me 2.4-2.6Mbps with the N1.

First time I ran speedtest app I got 565kbps down and 1258kbps up...looked reversed to me.
Ran it again just now and got 979 down 582 up.
It's seems to be pretty random on the test, but real-usage on the browser is fast enough to have me very satisfied.

Hmm.. I am getting anywhere from 2 to 2.4 Mb/s Down and 1.7 Mb/s Up (Raleigh/Cary NC).

The Vibrant doesnt support HSPA+ so the max you could get is 7.2mbps. Not sure if the N1 is HSPA+ compatible though.

niether does the N1...its maxed at 7.2 also

those are twice the speeds i'm seeing here in richmond, va with a MyTouch 3G (still waiting for my vibrant to arrive)

I'm in Tampa, FL and it depends on the latency on my end. When it says I ping at around 150 ms, the speeds hit below 1 Mb/s. When it's below 120 ms, my speeds are always above 2 Mb/s. This is download of course, upload just sucks period.

Im getting like 3.0 mbps everywhere i go. Even no bars, seems fast to me.

I haven't been able to test 3G yet but I'm getting:
(With wifi) 1 out of 3 bars, Imagine what it would be if I had full bars!

This is in Milwaukee, WI to a server in Chicago. I think the speed is great, especially when I compare it to my daughters speed on Sprint and friends on AT&T.

first speed test i took i for 4.7mbps down, ~500kbps up
in dallas our downstream is ****in awesome, upstream has always suffered.

N1 specs- 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n
54 Mbit/s
Samsung Vibrant - 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n
108 Mbit/s
Should def be seeing faster wifi speeds.
Should see faster and better bluetooth also since N1 is 2.0 and Sammy is 3.0

the vibrant has an 802.11n radio, but only in the 2.4GHz operating freq.

This is with full signal strength showing 3G on the phone with the occasional H flashing.

This is what I got. The download speeds are great. The upload speed...not so much but I don't know how accurate this app is cause when I'm tethered it's about the same for download but over 1mbps for upload.
P.S- When I did the test I was on "H"

I'm in the same boat, my speeds here are awful, average the same as yours, t-mobile seem to have some form of limit on Android unless you're on a higher data package which I've got set to activate on the 19th so will see if that helps, search through my username there's a thread I created on the subject with a link to t-mobile support forums, as far as I know that's the only reason I can find as to why my speed is so slow, makes sense really to have your speed capped with a 1gb limit as you'd hammer your fup in no time otherwise, I know I would, had access limited 3 months running for going over!

Im on vodafone though haha! I cant wait till the day this contract ends so I can go back to O2 I loved them!

Just to add to this I got two friends to test theres.
The one on UK T Mobile had a connection speed of 4.5 Meg
The chap on vodafone who has a desire is running... 100kbps.
so its nothing to do with my andoird/winmo/radio setup its just crap vodafone (the company with the fastest mobile browsing, my arse!!!)

My speed looks like this
Download: 0.36 Mbps
Upload: 0.48 Mbps
First, does anyone know how it's possible to have a higher upload than download?
And I really don't understand why my data throughput is so bad.. I was near an antenna, about 200 meters away.
Edit: With the new radio 2.14 i get a download of 1.67 Mbps and an upload of 0.6 Mbps.

Explain my **** connection on t-mobile then, I'm all ears......

anywhere between 2-4.5 mbps dload; .4-.8 mbps upload. which is great for me, my dsl is only pulling in 1.5 mbps. lol.

I'm on 3 in the UK and as you can see from my results, they are kinda all over the place! In reality I find that the data speeds are fine for what I need most of the time. It should be noted that the performance varies depending on my location (work/home etc) and time of day (when there may be throttling!) or night...
I tend to mainly be on HSDPA but sometimes 3G.

I get 6.2 down and 3.5 up. Hehe

lately att data service in nyc hasn't been too stellar and the local att store claims that at&t is doing some sort of infrastructure work but don't know what

Certainly on/off peak times do make a difference. I just now recorded my fastest speed on att's network I've ever recorded. Keep in mind it's 3:30 am here in DFW area of Texas.

ROM is stock, rooted & deblurred (frozen blur parts) 4.5.91 gingerbread.
Typically, however, during the day and through the evening I pull anywhere from 800 kbps to 2000 kbps.

scratch that, just pulled 5507 kbps down.
Pretty awesome I'd say. Unfortunately, att can't maintain that level of speed with more devices being used concurrently during the day.

just tested my wifes atrix alongside my captivate (running a nice radio firmware)
Its 1:45 in downtown portland so not peak at all. I consistantly test at this time though
Anyway, here are her results from the most recent test
Ping: 182ms
Download: 10.70 Mbps
Upload: 1.67
Most impressive 3g i've ever seen! I used to laugh because my captivate would usually double her download and well, upload wasn't even close!
Compare that to my captivate which consistantly beat her in the past....
Ping:150ms
Download:4.23 Mbps (max i've ever hit was 6 this time of night)
Upload: 1.64 Mbps
She is running pie crust with .91 modem and has been in the neighborhood of 8-10 all night. Sorry to go on, i'm just pretty damn impressed with her phone right now =)

That is seriously impressive - you sure it wasn't on wifi? (Kidding!)

I was recently in OC, Maryland and was getting on average 7500 down and 2500 up.

That's about as high as I have had it in Boston using the Comcast server.
Varies throughout the day/night, and on weekends though. Can be 1-2Mbps down on same server at 10am, then 6Mbps down at 10pm. Traffic makes a huge difference.

Yea Philly is notoriously slow.. Definitely not enough towers for the level of congestion in the city. I've been on 4 or 5 different ROMs with my Atrix, two different radios, and 3 kernels and my speeds aren't much better than yours. My down speed averages between 1mbps and 4mbps at best, and up speed between .6mbps and 3mbps. I've seen a few spikes, but overall I don't expect much.

Finally got hspa+ in my area!
This is the highest I've got so far. Not as impressive as some but it's a heck of a lot better than before when I couldn't even reach 2Mb/s.

How would you know if you've gotten it?

Yeah, I usually get between 1.5 and 3 mb/s down, 0.3 to 1.5 mb/s up, and it seems random. I've seen 4+ down with .3 up, 1.1 down with 1.8 up, and everywhere in between. Buncha BS.
