So I got my Evo the first day, Ordered online, got it, all fine. After a while, it developed this brighter-than-usual spot on the screen. Called customer support. I just got the new one in the mail, it's a rev 003 as opposed to a 002. Problem is, this one has the light leak on the bottom of the screen (previous one does not). I talked to cust service and they won't take it back, they want me to go to a repair shop. What would you guys do? exchange it or not? send the original one back or the newer one. Granted the light leak issue on the new phone isn't visible with the skin cover.
The light leak is coming from the bottom buttons, not the screen. I would return the Evo with the bright spot, as it is very obvious, nothing can fix it besides repair. I had a bright spot too, it was annoying.
I would let them repair it if they can repair it in a several hours. I would not accept a refurb.

I am posting regarding issues I've been haveing with my Nexus One units. Yes I have done swaps with HTC on three occasions and keep having the same issues.
One issue is a defect on the top left hand corner of the device where if there is a light shining on it at the right angle; a scuff mark appears. It is not rough to where you can feel it only to where it can be seen. It's an eye sore if you notice it.
Also is the dust under the screen. I know this problem will occur in most phones but is a nuisance to me. HTC is quick to swap out any phone with such problems.
And here on my third unit I'm getting screen flickering.
I would like to give info on how I treat my gadgets in general. I always take the greatest care for every tech I buy. My Nexus One has never hit the floor or been near water to cause any damage. Its always in the stock sleeve when its not being used.
I absolutely enjoy using my phone, but these replacements units are getting worse each time. Has anyone noticed any of the problems I'm speaking of, more so on the scuff mark and screen flickering?
Again this is not a slight towards the phone which I feel is great, but just to get a notion if this is going on to other owners or just localized with me.
Thank you for any response you give.
The only thing I can see under bright light on the top left is the light and proximity sensors. I don't have any of the issues you describe in fact, you must have been very unlucky.
Are you sure they actually swapped your phone (only applicable if you didn't got the advance replacement where they put a hold on your CC), worth noting your IMEI or serial number when replacing.
I had dust under the screen but have not had the problem since sending it in under warranty. Other than that the manufacture quality seems quite high given my limited sample set of 1.
I see the same scuff mark in the upper-left corner, but I only saw it after having dropped the phone once. Otherwise, I had the clicking screen corners, but a hairdryer took care of that. To date (~1.5 months of use), still no dust, and that's with regular use of the trackball and everything.
I did have an actual swap, replacement came in before I sent mine out. I tis unfortunate, but it seems out of the ordinary to have the same scuff mark on each replacement. I did check IMEI numbers on all devices.
I really enjoy this phone, Ive gone through countless phones ranging from Nokias to Samsungs to HTC. I never had this problem before with all of those.
The scuff mark appears on the body of the phone, not the screen. I understand where the sensors are and thankfully that has not been a problem I went through.
I just can't imagine this is all my luck of replacements.

Post a picture of this scuff mark you're referring to. If you've had it on three different phones and the rest of us don't have it, then there's obviously a disconnect here.
from my talks with HTC when you send the phone in to be repaired instead of exchanged they fix all the issues 100% because they are repaired by hand. i was assured when i got mine back it would have 0 chance of having anymore dust issues. so we'll see how that goes.
didn't have any of the other issues you mentioned though.
I have tried to photograph said defect, but to no avail. I have tried over and over again to, but the camera I have is a piece of junk.
I assure you what I said about it. Its not me doing anything wrong. I had it on my original phone and thus checked every time I received a replacement.
I do not know if the technicians are actually following the advice I gave them to the HTC rep to angle the phone to find it.
Recently I sent out a message to Google directly pleading to receive a brand new unit, I will probably not get that knowing how businesses work. I'm an accountant/consultant.
The ways things have turned out tell me that there is a fault in the manufacturing process, maybe localized to a certain "chain" if you will. How I got three of the same problems amazes me. I know it has been fixed because I have two other friends that have this phone without the problem of the scuff mark. They purchased the phone a month after it came out meaning they received a phone from a different batch.
I will update this thread again when I receive another replacement after the current ticket is resolved. Thanks for the responses
There's a bright spot on my screen its not discoloured just brighter then the rest of the screen about the size of a pencil eraser I brought it to the Sprint store to get a replacement but they told me its because I dropped the phone yes I have dropped it previously and you can see the scratch but the off sent cracked at all just a scratch on the case I asked the tech if he could prove that it was from droping the phone he said he can't but wont order me a replacement has this issue happens to anyone else any ideas on what I should do?

go to a different store until they replace it
my replacement was like that, i was like, eh i can live with it!!
my first one did it. it was a biotch to get it replaced. Then my new one started doing the same thing in the same spot. It really only noticeable on white screens. I have insurance from best buy so im just going to smash the mofo and get a new one when i get back from the desert. hopefully they have some new hardware revisions out by then and it will be all better but ill probably just get stuck with a refurb.
I have the same issue with mine. It just started here recently. It's not bugging me too bad, so I'll just live with it. And I haven't done anything to mine (no drops).
So it's not something under my screen protector. Good to know.
It bothers me on bright white screens, but everything else about the phone is great. I'm not sure I'd trade this in and potentially get a phone with light leakage, screen raising, etc. Maybe I will eventually get it looked at, though. Like, after hardware 0004 and 0005 come out?
We'll see.
Could anybody post a pic of this phenomenon?
@zhensley-Unless you've just bought your phone and they roll out the 004 revision pretty soon, your chances of getting one are pretty slim. If i'm not mistaken after the 30 day return period any replacement phone you would get is a refurb. I'd definitely wait a looong while until the 002/3's are less common to even think about getting a refurb.
I have this too. I have not dropped it, and taken good care of it (albeit, without a case / screen protector). And yes, it only shows on white screens - and mine is the size of a large dime. It's annoying, but I can live with it. I don't even want to attempt to deal with Sprint.
+1
I am on my 2nd EVO - the first was not like this (002) this is a novatek 003 - and i only really notice it on white screens as well.. my phone has been in the official HTC rubber case since day one
but I can live with it for sure
Yeah my phone has that bright light to at the right too I had never dropped the phone its been the since I bought the phone
you guys shouldn't just sit on this problem. some of the earlier EVO's had this issue, there was a thread about this, and they took them back for replacements. my first one was like this. now mine is perfect.
Had the same problem with my first Evo, never dropped it, even my laptop has these spots.
So, I had the issue too.
I called into sprint store in West LA, and asked if I could get a replacement for the bright spots.
According to the rep I talked to this has been happening more and more; and said come into the store and we can order you a replacement.
I went to the store 5 hours later, and I talked to the same person I talked to on the phone, and he placed the order without even looking at the phone. I was in and out in 5 minutes.
Pretty Easy. Not sure why OP had so much difficulty.
So I contacted sprint about a dead pixel a long time ago, and they told me to wait until it gets back in stock on the website to get a replacement. The thirty days pass and no stock, so I contact sprint and they say I should have gone through tech to get a replacement. I do this, and I get sent the refurb replacement.
I guess I was kinda lucky, I got a 003 epson screen (I'm coming from Novatec) that's still on 2.1, so I can still root. There's the smallest thing underneath my menu and back buttons, it's almost like a scratch in the black stuff three, and a tiny bit of light leaks through. Hard to see if thee phones not st the right angle. The phone seems a little off though, and I noticed the back battery cover and the small surround around the phone are a different color, like graphite compared to the black. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:

Doesn't show too well in the picture, but in person it's fairly different, it looks like a metallic paint or something compared to the flat black. It does feel a little bit less rubbery too.
The little scratch on the bottom is almost enough to make me want to seek out another replacement, comparing it to the tiny dead pixel I had it seems like I went through so much hassle to get something else that is just equally as annoying for such an expensive phone.
I'd be hard pressed to be able to get another 003 that's rootable, though root may be coming to froyo in the future I suppose.
Other differences with the refurb:
Inside the battery cover there are markings for XD-01 everywhere, on my old phone they all said XD-01 and the number 100507 followed it. The number 100507 isn't on the refurb phone anywhere.
There is a refurb sticker that says VTO 07/22/10 on it
Hard to distinguish colors in that picture, one back has light reflecting off of it, the other doesn't.
As for the scratch, it's a refurb right? Not much to comment on that one I think.
Edit: Do you still have both phones? Could you take the screen of the new phone and install it into the old phone?
I'm not so sure I'd want to do a screen transplant, I figure that's how the scratch got there in the first place...and my old screen has a dead pixel. Maybe I could just change the glass?
Yeah here's another pic, altho it's still hard to tell.

I've seen it mentioned before. There is a spot that is lightening on the screen where it gets warm above the processor. It is most noticable on lighter colors.
I am past 30 days of buying the device, so do I have to pay a $100 dollar deductible for the insurance on the phone to get it repaired? Or do I just go trade it out?
Someone please help me that has been through this before lol.
Also, are they still out of stock everywhere?
I've got the same thing... I didn't know this was a common issue...
I had the same issue that you did first i took it to a sprint repair store and they told me they could not do anything for me so then I called the sprint costumer service line and told them my story and they ended up sending me a referb overnight.
It's happening to my phone, as well as my brother with an Evo. It seems the processor is overheating and discoloring the screen. I bought it from radioshack and bought their warranty. I hope they don't give me any grief about it. I am actually holding out on returning it. The warranty is 1 year, so I think i will wait until close to the end of that.
Ive never seen this, can someone post pics?
what part of screen is that?
How many of you with this problem are overclocking?
I have it in mine as well. I don't overclock nor do I use WiFi tether often at all.
Interested in seeing a pic.
Also thought that i'd mention that I made a thread on this last week. Everyone experiencing this issue in my thread had a novatech lcd panel. Search for my thread there are a couple pics there. Also, im not really sure its the heat from the processor. My spot as well as all the others in the other thread is located about an inch above the back button.
Had the same problem on my first phone. I had to exchange it due to a blown earpiece speaker. So far 2 weeks into my replacement and I have no problem with the display. I'm not sure which screen I have, and am not 100% sure how to find out, but I'm sure my original phone was Novatec.
If 2.2 was rooted I would return this thing for replacement tomorrow. Really disappointed with this screen flaw.
I have this issue on my screen as well. Only noticeable on white or very light screens. I do overclock, but this manifested before I started doing that and even before I rooted the phone. It's a spot that looks noticeably whiter than the rest of the screen and, if the keyboard is up, would be on or close to the B key. (I've seen it called the B spot) my spot is over the spacebar and up the B key.
I can see how it would get irritating. It annoys me sometimes. And I agree. If 2.2 was rooted I would call HTC for factory warranty (i didst get insurance via radioshack)
...in 1943, I killed a drifter.
Had the same problem. It was a bout a 1/2" round white circle about and inch from the bottom of the screen. You can't see it on dark backgrounds, but you can on white. I have a Nova panel.
I was also past my 30 days, but sprint got me a replacement phone no fuss and no deductible. I never overclocked either.
Exactly like this, I was just enjoying some Fallout Shelter, then the screen just turned bright, like washed out.
Then BAM! Prince Purple Rain memento right there!

I've read around that people experiencing this problem, their phones died a couple of days later,
gotta get rid of all my files
Have you fixed your phone yet dude?
I had the same issue, took it to Samsung and they replaced it.
I seen your post on Reddit. I would definately suggest you take that to Samsung. They'll replace it under warranty.
That's not normal mate, get it replaced pronto!
Damn it, mine just started this crap. No stores here, I hope they mail you one first.
--edit--
Wow, I have to make this piece of crap back to them. 10 business day turn around. Samsung doesn't take care of you.
--more edit--
The screen went out 2 hours after noticing the issue for the first time.
--edits strike back--
Just keeping up with this incase another comes across the problem. I just got an email stating the part to fix it is on back order. So this must be a common issue.
Yep, common problem. Happened to me too. Sent it under warranty, they replaced the screen. When I got it back, the screen was damaged from within. Sent it back, they replaced the screen. When I got it the second time, there was a dead pixel in the center of the screen. Sent it back, obviously. Still waiting for it.
Hi, just getting this out of the depths of the board,
My phone also started to do this, like 6 or 7 weeks ago. I couldn't get it replaced because I was off to go abroad for two months but I will send it in once I return. I'm still well in the two years of warranty so that isn't a problem to get it replaced after.
My screen didn't die though. It works fine and if you use the app Screen Adjuster Free and turn all sliders up by +5, the problem is gone except when the phone is very hot.
What I find VERY odd is that I only see those smudges in bright light. e.g. direct sunlight, or a LED lenser. And what makes it more odd is that, once I block the light with my hand for example, the smudges are gone. I can have a HUGE smudge all over the screen and when I block the light with my finger, literally only that area where the "shadow" of the finger would be goes normal again. It's like the LED crystals react to bright light and cause this.
Let me show you what I mean.
That is some weird ass malfunction.
I have KNOX triggered though so I hope they'll replace it anyway. No experience with Samsung warranty handling so far.
