Im plugged into my comp via usb to my phone and strangely once it starts charging...my phone's temp soar! Is this typical? Im seeing the temperature marks via SetCPU

mine also gets hotter but I don't know whether it's as hot as yours, but I think a bit increasing is fine.
The higher CPU speed may be the culprit, this happened to me before. I changed my CPU speed back to normal while charging and it doesn't get hot.

I tried underclock my CPU speeds down to about 245 mhz and the temps still appear to be quite high at about 98-99 Fahrenheit? Ive also got my brightness down to the lowest setting and always Taskkiller Apps beforehand. Anyone know why the temps are still up there?
Mine gets brutally hot (45 degrees celcius) which is about the same when im charging over usb on my ps3, are you using it when its charging? also maybe your usb port isnt giving a constantly equal charge.
Odd mine is set to 358/245 for charging and of I'm not using it my temps don't go over the ambient air temp.
If I am using it my fail safe kicks in and never gets over 41c..

Hmmm...its seems like the usb port is fine
im not sure...i think its the phone's battery maybe? Becuz sometimes even when not charged...the temps are still pretty high....
Lets say ive been playing a game on an app for about 30minutes on medium brightness...I could actually feel the phone warming up
Another scenario I think could be the cause is actually my ROM maybe? Cannon's Complete Eclair has my cpu overclocked at 576mhz which isnt a whole lot any means.... but maybe it has to with the kernels and system related modifications?

Anyone else notice their G2 runs super hot in general? My friend with a Desire Z is able to daily use 1.4GHz...I have to set mine to on demand between 245 and 998 for it not to hit 38C+.
On top of that, my G2 gets about 40C when I'm charging which is certainly quite hot! Running Virtuous 0.7.2 w/pershoot, but it does this on Cyanogen and evil kernel as well.
Does anyone know of any disassembly shots/videos? I'm thinking I might take everything apart and re-thermal paste everything...

Eh... 1st of all... you're going to put thermal paste on the battery? The temperature reading for the g2 is the temperature of the battery.
2nd: I've never heard of a phone that had a heatsink on its cpu. So I don't think you'd even have a place to put thermal paste.

Not on the battery! Although, that's an interesting idea...use the dry thermal pads between the battery and the door. I'm just checking if everything is getting overly hot compared to some of your other devices. Thought it may be the charging circuit having issues or something...or bad battery.
40C is fine though? At what temp do most of you have set for CPU throttling in SetCPU then? I have mine throttle to lowest when it hits that temp.

40C does sound pretty warm to me even if its while the phone is charging. I am OC'd to 1.4ghz and even when using the phone while charging, I hardly ever go over 37C.
My on-demand is set to 368/1497 and when temp>38C 245/768, although that profile never really comes into play as my temperature rarely gets that hot. Have you checked your running applications to see if there is something eating system resources? Reason I say that is because the only time my phone gets noticeably 'hotter' is after I have been playing Angry Birds for say 20+ minutes.
I wonder if its due to Variable charging currents/rates. I've noticed this is particularly problematic when i charge from say...15% battery. And yeah, Angry Birds for 20+ mins = toasty!

Hmmm, that seems a bit warmer than the norm. The thermal pad idea was a good thought though. But I'd suspect some modding to be done for it to work.

had my phone charging of my usb on my laptop last night while i was texting a friend, when i noticed that the the Kick stand was getting warm so i checked the temp through my battery widget and found the temp to be 114.5* F I immediatly unplugged my phone and took my case off and the back off to let it cool. I was wondering if this is common or even a safe temp. My setup is as follows

Max temp for the battery is 60C/140F. I have had temps in that range if I had the screen on for a long time or wifi tether. Around 50/55C though and I would worry.if you notice it often and overclock then I would lower the max cpu frequency.

Thanks for the response on this i'm not overclocked so i guess it was the screen being on to long. I will keep a close eye on it from here on out

You are definitely within safe limits on temperature. The only bad thing is the batteries capacity degrades quicker when at a high temperature, but you will probably replace the phone prior to actually realizing the degradation.
Its fine. Mines been a little higher. I don't like using my phone around those temperatures though.

General consensus is that using the phone while on USB tends to yield higher temps, but no one knows why.

You may use an app such as System Tuner to watch your CPU temperature. Mine get 50 celcius after 15minutes playing NFS MW... I dont know if it is still normal.
What version are you on? Mine used to be uncomfortably warm, but since 4.2.2, that has been fixed for me.

Hi,
It feels hot... its very subjective without a real measured CPU or battery temp. Like opticaldh said, install an app with monitoring CPU temp and see. What kernel ?
Also what is the battery temp?

I am on Franco kernel, fast CPU, UV 150 (Default for 384Hz is 850, now it is 700). That's what makes me worry.
My Nexus has been getting uncomfortably hot. I first noticed it last night after getting to a friends place and took the phone out. It was really hot and the battery had dropped about 20% for a 15 minute drive. I checked the battery and Google Maps was showing at the top with the most usage even though it wasn't enabled.
I then proceeded to check the settings in Maps and turned off all the location tracking stuff which was unfortunately enabled.
However, even today my phone was again quite warm after driving around. Battery didn't even show Google Maps so that wasn't the cause.
It may have something to do with signal issues always trying to get the strongest signal as it doesn't happen when I am at home and not moving around.

Only way to really reduce heat without an impact on performance would be to undervolt. Another way would be to underclock. Both you need a custom kernel to do.

Matrix kernel runs at 288 MHz when idling, you can under volt it at around 650ma there.
I am running Motley kernel, idling at 308 MHz, UV at 700 ma. The only time I notice my n4 getting hot is when I use GPS and charging simultaneously.

i don't have a problem with heating on my Nexus 4, running latest franco kernel + uv settings makes it a lot cooler than before, when i don't use uv settings it heats up too pretty fast but with those settings it even stays cool on benchmarks and stability tests, cause i don't play on my Nexus 4, could try that out too to see if it gets hot. well it gets slightly warm but never "hot" i would never call it that.

I know that overheating in nexus 4 is common problem, but today after installing custom ROM CyanogenMod 10.1 my phone has started overheating more quickly. Is anybody know any solution of it?

overheating i doubt, what was the cpu and battery temperature? just because it feels warm, doesnt mean its overheated. when it actually overheats, first the cpu will lower in cpu speed(safety), then if that doesnt help itll shutdown. is the weather around you warm btw?

Thanks for your replay, I still don't understand why my mobile has started getting warmer more quickly ever since I've installed custom rom. I've hardly played any graphics intensive game on it so far.
I don't know from where to know cpu and battery temperature. Do I need to install any application from playstore? Weather around here is warm. On average 35-40 degree temperature.
My phone CPU reaches 70˚C and battery 50˚C when driving in my car, charing with gps on a this time of the year(hot as hell here as well).
Everything seems to be find, didn't even turn itself yet so I doubt theres anything to worry about.
My gf forgot her phone in the car stand in the sun for a few hours, when she came back it wouldn't turn on until it was cooler so you can be sure your phone can take care of itself.
Maybe your governor was changed when you flashed the ROM, depending on the governor (like performance) your cpu clock speed may be increased more often then with the original governor.
You can check your governor with apps like no-frills cpu or setcpu and check the temperatures with cpu z

its easier to use an app for battery and cpu temp. being 35-40C around you, id expect the phone to be warm most of the time. anyways, after installing a custom rom your device spends a lot of time syncing stuff. so itll be a little warmer than normal. after about a full battery cycle it should stop, and will be a little cooler. also, a reboot after several hours after a rom flash should help a little too.

Is anyone else having issues where they're phone locks at 600mhz and is laggy as hell?I've tried multiple Roms even stock and get the same situation..It seems that if I try to charge my phone at all this gets triggered.
apparently charging and quick charging throttles it I believe...quick charging even worse. that's pretty hot for a battery temp so yeah probably throttles.

I get the same problem even it is not charging. When battery temperature approach 40 degree,sometimes 38. The cpu scaling is locked and capped below 652MHz and become so slow to use!! It happen indoor and outdoor, so annoying
