An application apn timer - Android Software Development

Hello, I am new in this Android's world.
I have a HTC Magic, i the battery low very fast, :-D
Today thinking I make an idea, if is possible make or exist an aplicattion
that for example , every 15 or 30 minutes active 3g conection, and deactive after 5 or 10 minutes.
With this application the battery can low more slow, by other hand, this application is for people that not need 3g conection 100% day.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.

Already exists: JuiceDefender in the market.

Thank you very much

Any time.-

Battery Life

Can you post your usage and your battery life ?
Just as DUKE09 posted in the past in the Elf forum, I'm reporting the information needed to understand our usage:
- Things that you made with touch (gaming, video, gsm, music etc.) + how long? (hour plz)
- Whether if you switch off your touch at nights or not?
- Fully discharge and charge ?
- Total time to reach at zero level ? (touch turns itself off)
- Settings for HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Resuming\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\Default
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Suspend\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\Default
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Unattended\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\Default
- Background applications
- Band (GSM or 3g)
- BT ON or Off
Mine are:
- No gaming no video or media, 1h30min phone call per day, 5 sms, plus Active sync via BT
- Charged during the night
- No full Discharge
- Dunno when it will be completly discharged (i need it for work)
- Registry settings all three configured with Default = 3 (my BT headset never disconnects even if the dual is in standby), I've played a little bit with those parameters and i found that with Default = 4 my battery drains really fast.
- Sometimes I use PocketCM and FullScreenKeyboard, both in background
- Disabled 3g, via Band menu in the Phone Settings (setting Band to GSM) and HKLM\Software\OEM\UMTS\OpMode configured to 1.
- BT always on
With those settings at the end of the day my Dual is at 60-65%
Please post your comments here !
Thanks in advance,
Raid.
You certainly doing better then me! my Dual at the end of a working day is at measly 30-40% but then again I do have it on set 3g all day, listen to about 90 min of music via bluetooth headset and surf the web for about an hour as have unlimited data plan with 3
Hhmmm!!! I going to try your power management reg tweak, I'll let you know if it makes any difference, if does nice find Raid!!
Fully charge in the morning, turn on Bluetooth 24 hours, MSN for 2 hours using 3.5G, Web browsing using 3.5G half an hour, talk on phone average of 15 mins at the end of date left 30 percent.
@gfreek
I think that the default setting is "3" for all power parameters.
I've modified those to "4" due to random disconnects of my old Nokia BT Headset (maybe is not compatible). But then I've found that the problem was the BT headset and not the Dual, and I've switched back to "3" due to an heavy battery drain. I dunno if your ROM has "3" by default.
Looking at the first two posts I think that using the Dual in a "normal way" for that kind of device, we have to charge it at the end of the day....no chances...
Has the Touch Elf a better battery life ?
Regards,
Raid.
I have Qtek 8500, Qtek S200, HTC 710, HTC Touch Dual ... all Device have simulare batterie drain!! I think ... HTC Touch Elf too. Only resone why i think Touch Elf is in the moment batterie friendlyer ... you can install a CPU Scaler to save your batterie. I use all Device in the always online mode (need Exchange Sync or Blackberry ... both are simulare in Batterie drain!)
Hi raid, I can confirm my dual default for all three was set to 4, I've now set it 3 like yours, let see if makes a difference on mine.

Ok gfreek ! I'm waiting for the results !
ok raid here's my findings with this tweak:
BEFORE:
Battery Level after a working day = 30-40%
(based on the below settings/usage)
AFTER:
Battery Level after a working day = 50-55%
(based on the below settings/usage)
Settings/Usage:
Band - 3G
Web - 1 hour day
Music via BT Headsets - 90min
Calls - about 20-30min
So as you can see raid this little reg tweak does have an overall effect on battery level! Just curious raid did you try setting yours to 2 or 1 on these registry? did they any more difference? or should I just stick to 3.
those registry settings, what are they doing?!
Did you guys notice any instability afterwards?
I didn't try to set them to 1 or 2.
Referring to this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=273990&highlight=keep+wifi+standby+bluetooth+Power
I think that with 1 or 2 we get more power consumption...
The strange thing is that with "4" BT should be off during the standby, instead we just get battery drains faster !!
Maybe the power states are different on the Dual ?
Many thanks gfreek !!
Please, if any other can confirm what we have tested, it will be much appreciated...
Settings work for me. Went from 25% left end of day to 60% left.
Also this helps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305332
Anyone more tips ?
Admins, I think this thread should be a sticky !!!
Please ANY DUAL OWNER, try those power registry settings !!!
Just to have more feedbacks....
Many thanks to gfreek and steven !
Another Reg tweak to increase battery life even further!!
Hi guys I have tested this and found a nice little increase in battery life on top of the reg tweak Raid posted here! You're likely get 10-15% increase on battery life with this tweak, it may not seem like much but a power user like me, it does make a difference
With the combination of these reg tweaks settings at the end of a working day my Dual is at 65%-70% before it was 30% - 40%
Settings/Usage:
Band - 3G
Web - 1 hour day
Music via BT Headsets - 90min
Calls - about 20-30min

Do you know what is PPTP or L2TP???
Why you think, it can helps to save Power?
PPTP and L2TP is a Tunneling Protokol! You only need them, if you open a VPN Tunnel to a Privat Network. If you change settings and you doesnt use the buildin VPN functions, you will save what??? Nothing ... yes ... nothing is the only right answer!
If some guys want realy check his power consuming ... please use a Amp Meter and a Datalocker for long time messurments!
Next ... if some guys change here Radio Rom ... possible they save Power! What Radio Version was in his Dual???
This are importent questions!
Sorry for my bad English but this tweaks are pure nonsens!!!

LOL! NetrunnerAT I can see you are very opinionated person! FYI yes I do know what PPTP and L2TP are!!!! what part you don't understand when I said I TESTED these tweaks, in fact tested it over week with and without the reg tweak just to make sure they really did make a difference, I know on paper these tweak should not make a blind bit of difference but they did!! maybe I've got a very special dual MY PRECIOUS!!!!
Realy???
Very Strange ... for Windows CE 5.0 you can buy a Technical Document for the Registry Hives. They are simulare. It say ... if you Open a Tunnel, you can disable the Powermanagement. The reason is easy ... VPN Tunnel need a up and running connection. If your device close it, for saveing power ... the session keys are invalid. New IKE exchange is needed!! A normal Handy doesnt use it!
Italian touch dual:
before:30% at the end of the day
after:40% at the end of the day(i obviously tried the mod for several days to avoid casual alteration due to a different usage of the device)
1hr phone
.5hr web
some casual gaming/mp3/movie
2g/3g auto select, so it eventually switch when there's 3g coverage
usually recharge when batttery approximately goes to 10%
BT always on
now, could anyone kindly explain what these registry mods really do??
i haven't noticed any issue till now.
same for me
i have abt 10% more battery.
i realized, that bluetooth really sucks battery. If I disable bt i have 60-70% left at the end of the day. with bluetooth 30-40%.
butr isn't that a shame? a new battery which I have to charge every day? what do i have to do in 6 month? charge it three times a day?

Battery Problem Blackstone

Hi, I'm new in this forum, and I don't speack English well, so I want to excuse me!
I have the new Touch HD, at the beginning I changed immediately the original ROM with a new one, I installed a lot of programs, and everything woked very well for two weeks, but then I had a big problems with battery...a the first the battery was very good, -10/15% per day, but suddenly after two weeks the battery lose 1% of its charge every 2/5 mintes...if I disconnect the power when the battery is 100%, after one hour without use (and also without wifi, BT and GPS), I have 70% of charge!
I try to change the ROM, a friend suggested me a new upgrade for Radio, but I didn't resolve my problem!
Now I buy a new battery online in htcstore, but if I put my mobile in "Fly mode" the battery work very very good!
I want to say that here normally I have the signal indicator with 2/3 nicks, so the signal is good!
Someone can help me?...someone have my same problem?
Thank you so much fo everything!
Greetings, Eddy
the battery will be used up quickly if your fone is constantly searching in and out for a 3g signal, regardless of 2g signal strength
have you got wifi on?
bluetooth?
a gps app running?
what other apps do you have running in background? some really poll the cpu a lot and will lead to battery drain
other than a dodgy battery, it must be some software running that is using up the battery
Thank you for aswering!
In background normally I have SMS o Contacs, but also if I close every programs in background the battery doesn't work well!
No, Bluetooth is OFF, GPS and WI-FI are OFF, I use telephone just with gsm!
Also when I write message, normally I write a message so long (3/4 messages), after wirting, the battery lost 10%, and I didn't have this problems at the biginning!
I left my mobile on also during the night, and in the morning I had again 100% of charge...now 100% it's a far dream!
try turning off the autoadjust for the screen and setting it at a medium setting, also make sure the backlight turns off after a minute or less.
its a huge screen and will burn up power, although saying that i watched a full length film on my HD the other day and only used 20% in 1.5hrs
if no progs are running in the background and its not a display issue (how have you checked whats running btw? need more than just WM taskmanager, try mem maid or similar) and the problem is not there when in flight mode. then i can only assume its the rom you are using, try another with a different radio rom in it
i found roms with 1.10 radio to be better than 1.09. try this rom (mulitlanguage) works good for me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=465637
edit: have you got HDTweak installed? its good to configure the data to auto turnoff after 1 minute or so (even in gsm gprs could be running)
I tried to setup the new ROM but I didn't resolve the problem!
If I leave my mobile only with GSM on, without use it, without call and sms, the battery lost 2% in 30 minutes, and it's not normal!
If I use it, change settings, write message, the battery lose 5% in five minutes!
I don't know what I have to do...this mobilie now can't live without a power connection!
I want say also that at the beginning some application in my HTC wanted "HTCAPI.dll" because they didn't found into the mobile...so I found this dll online and I did copy/paste into the directory!
It can gave me problems with battery?....I don't know how it's possible, but I don't know!
Try to buy or borrow another HD battery and compare them. You should know the problem then.
Of course, I alredy bought it online, and I'm waiting to get the shipping!
But it's very strange that a battery stop to work suddenly, but I know that there are a lot of people who have my same problem!
If i were you, i would flash back the original rom and do a hard reset. Then, without installing anything on the device, see if the problem persists.
Thank you ardsar...I want to try....can you tell me, what I have to do to obtain the original product?...without hardspl and new rom?...like the first time that I turned on this HD! Thank you so much!
For example, I have your same SPL and ROM at the moment!
Hi Ardsar, I flashed my ROM and SPL (brand), and now my mobile is like the original but....do you know Teeter?...I played 2 minutes, I completed 3 levels, and from 85% the battery is now at 79%...
Hi guys...yesterday I did a lot ot tests, but without positive results, but I fund out new problems:
1)The bettery lose a lot of charge also if my Blackstone is offline, when I use it with TouchFLO, Teeter, SMS, Settings...everytime!
2)I have near to icon of signal, the simbol of GPRS, but sometimes it changes with the simbol H and with this new symbol, the signal falls and to resolve it, I have to wait a long ore reset the mobile.
Now I'm not sure that the "target" is the battery...I don't know, I changed also the Radio ROM with new last, but the problem is not over!
Before put it into garbage case, someone can suggest me something to try?
...I will never bring it to Assistence HTC, because I will have to wait some months, and I didn't pay 500€ to have it "under repairing"
Do you have SK Tools 4.4.6 or another battery monitor installed?
With SK Tools, you can see under the sys info the current battery use. My usage is in standby with lighted display -100mA. What's normal?
My battery is also very empty. Last evening i had 54%. This morning, the phone was off, no power any more.
No, now I will try this tool!
But I think that you also have problem with battery, becase the firsts days that I had my HD, I left my mobile on the whole night with 100% and in the morning I had 100%...I had 99% at lunch time! And a lot of friends that have this mobile have the battery so strong, like me at the beginning...so...I'm getting angry
i have this problem too. had my HD for 2 weeks coming to 3 now and my battery seems to deplect very fast, totally different when i had it. could be becoz of the wallpaper and 3rd party theme i had
For me, it seems it's a software or anything else that needs so much battery power, perhaps the hotfixes or something else.
Sadly, the whole battery monitor progs don't show the needed power per running process, only the current usage. Can anyone with a "good" battery life cann post his current usage? (For expample with SK Tools System Information/battery supply)
Is the backup battery always at 0%?
Battlog
How about this. You can log your activities and see how much battery current (discharge) each application is using by the ma figure. It produces a .log file but if you change it to .txt you can open it up in a text editor.
Hope it helps.
EDIT: Just found out there is better info on it here on XDA Raphael forum. Credits to PalladiumTD for this app.
Today I tried a new battery, and also with a good battery, I have the same problem...so I think that I have to send my mobile to HTC service and ask for a new one, because it can be an internal problem, maybe of motherboard, radio, or I don't know...but it's sure that is hardware problem!
Did you a hard reset and installed nothing else?
Yes, I did...I alredy unpacked it and monday I will send it to HTC service....I hope that they will sed me a new one....a friend said to me that maybe this problem for them is called DOA (dead on arrived) and in this case they have just to change it!I hope so!....but I don't like...!
I know that I can reset it pushing the volume control ecc.....someone knows it exactly?Thank you!

Battery drains 50% a day...whilst idling!

Guys,
pretty much as the topic says...it drains about 40 to 50% a day when it is idle....if I am using it it can be anything up to a 1% a minute.
Any hints on where to look - tried using battlog to log the usage but i cannot open the subsequent file at all.

Wiggz,
Try checking if you're in a dead-zone with no reception? (Your phone may be constantly trying to search for a signal). Do this for Wi-Fi too. Make sure it is not constantly scanning for a network.
Similarly, open up your task manager. How many programs do you see running in the background? Remember that pressing X in Windows Mobile does not mean it closes the application, it only means that the application is minimized.
Cheers.
Wifi is hardly ever on. My signal is always constant, but I have my data connection on 24/7 for emails. The only program I ever see consume CPU power when idle is "changescreen". I always check that a program has closed properly when I click the 'x'.
I know data connection on eats some battery but jesus - not that much surely?

Wiggz,
The question remains, how many programs do you see when you open up the task-manager? You did not answer the question.
From what I've observed with my friend's Toshiba Portege, he lost 30% in an hour. He did not realize that he had 15-ish programs "idling" in the background with very little RAM use. Long story short: Turn everything off if you don't need it and just keep the Task Manager running. He now goes through the night with 1 ~ 2% loss.
Good day.

When I open up task manager I see 4 applications running (taskmgr, manila, cprog x2) - when I check the processes I have many more obviously. However these are all processes I'd expect to be running (gwes.exe, cprog.exe, device.exe, services.exe etc...)
Any more advice?

Wiggz,
Unfortunately, that's all from me (I dont even have this phone yet, I'm saving up for it in the next couple of weeks). Try turning off your data and see how it goes. But damn, 50% loss just on idling, something in the background is definitely killing the battery.
Cheers!
Thanks for the help anyway - annoying the crap out of me. My Artemis used to go for days without needing a charge...I suppose my battery could be screwed but I want to troubleshoot first before I bite the bullet on that one - suppose I could hard reset and see what the drain is?
Things idling in RAM should not have any significant hit on the battery life. However, having the data connection on 24/7 will indeed kill your battery life, especially if you're using 3g or higher (Edge drains alot aswell, but not as much as 3g and higher). Since emails seem important to you, I'm guessing you have it set to dl every 5min (which is the most frequent setting). If applicable, change it to 10 or 15; granted it's possible you do need to get your emails ASAP and you need the 5min frequency. Now regardless whether you changed the frequency of the auto dl or not, set your data connection to terminate after a 1min of not being used. This should help you get a good bit more out of your battery.
(I have emails dl every 30min and RSS feeds and push pages once an hour. Data enables itself when needed and then terminates after a minute of not being used. This allows me to get much more than a days usage out of the phone. The only way I kill the phone is if on top of all that, I listen to music/radio for about 6 hours)
Hope it helps
oh, and in case you don't know, HD Tweak is one way to terminate data after X amount of time of not being used.
do you have stock or cooked rom btw? duttys v3 xt, for example, is known to drain battery a lot.

Cheers for this. I have HD Tweak and have tried that data connection termination setting before, however there is a little comment along with it that it can stop data and/or voice calls. Has anyone had any issues with it?
Thanks
i had similar problem, battery got drained overnight or during the day with a speed of light... but in my case the bad boy was Palringo (IM) which was auto starting with every phone reset and did not show on taskbar...it is so bad that it drained fully charged battery in aprox. 6-7 hours. so now i hardly use it, and whenever i do i make sure its closed properly....

personally I have had no issues whatsoever. The voice calls that I'm guessing they're referring to is VOIP which uses your data plan to make the call as I don't see why it would interfere with normal calls. I think the easiest thing is just to give it a try, and if it doesn't work for you, then let us know and hopefully we'll be able to come up with a different solution.

Well the reason I mentioned it was that I enabled that as one of a number of weaks and ended up having to hard reset as I wasn't getting Texts in a timely manner etc....it was probably another setting but I couldn't be sure.
Will try again. Only other thing is that data connection on 24/7 is great for a quick browse here and there and stock updates etc...

why is that, by the way?
You haven't got Sprite Virtual Mobile installed have you? I tried it out on my HD and it sucked the life out of it for some strange reason. And it wasn't even showing up in task manager.
Is there a list of processes, services etc that we can safely remove/disable to work in the background? What say all?
glad this thread came up - my blackstone has been absolutely fine until I had the genius idea of "optimising" everything about 2 weeks ago with HD Tweak...
Now it's not HD Tweaks fault, but whatever I have changed means that it can drain a full charge overnight, and by morning its nigh on empty, i'm going to try and change it all back today, but for sure some setting I've changed is sucking juice like no-ones business.
FWIW - I havent installed anything during this time, the only thing i've changed is some of the settings - so it's not a "rogue" app draining the battery.
OT - sorry for the semi-hijack - I guess my point is that i'll have a play with the settings and see if I can determine what's eating the battery and then compare with other people.
that's fine (re: hijack) I think the two topics are closely connected.....not sure of the answer though

My HTC Leo BATTERY!

Hello guys.
I got an HTC HD2 and I dont know if its a regular issue but my battery decreases like 10% in about 1 hour (LOL).
Dont know if maybe it's some program running in the background or something like that.
I got the following programs installed:
EasySetOwner
BSB Tweaks
touchscreen tweak
PHM Reg editor
G-Alarm
Microsoft NETFRAME 3.5
and some HTC hotfixes (which i guess wont mess up with the battery at all)
Help? :X
Is wi-fi on all the time ? Switch it off when not in use.
Is bluetooth enabled all the time ? Switch it off when not in use.
Is push mail or similar apps set too frequent to get update ?
Is the phone band set to 3G (UMTS) or GSM ? 3G drains battery faster than GSM.
Use Taskmanager to see what other apps are running.
Just some pointers I hope that can help to conserve/stretch battery life.
3g
it s most probally beacuse of you r 3g connection try installing a auto disconnect cab or edit the reg ,
try the following below , worked for me when i had my leo
the cabs are not my work all credit should got to the orginal creaters

Bottom line it’s impressive, now I really can enjoy my device without carrying a charger and searching for an outlet all the time .
I completely agree, the 020 firmware is fantastic. My usage differs slightly but even using Bluetooth to listen to Spotify all day didn't drain my battery. Neither did using my phone as a wireless 3G modem with Wifi tethering.
Well, yes, nice improvements but the WIFI is still using a lot of juice
wifi is confirmed using alot.
the phonebook is now kind of stupid...
when you click a person's name, their contact shows up, and when you tap their phone #...instead of calling that person directly it would bring you to the dialer screen with the # entered in and you need to press "call" to call the person...
i mean..if im in someones contact page and i tap their #..im pretty sure i want or need to call them....i really dont understand the point of bringing the dialer screen up again..pretty stupid on SE's part in my opinion
Well a quicker step would be to long hold their name and call them
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Well, I've rooted my device yesterday, started using it massively around 3 or 4 am to reconfigure everything and now its battery is at 8%:
throughout all the process wifi was used for internet (when needed, of course), 3g/gps/bluetooth turned off.
* Installed a lot of apps, some using barcode scanner, some using appbrain.
* Synced with google
* Restored a backup
* Reconfigured a lot of apps
* around 6 sms
* tweeted 2 or 3 times
* 5 to 10 calls 10m~ each
* listened to music through the day (around 2 hours of music, simple last fm scrobbler was used to cache the data, didn't scrobbled yet)
* read a pdf book around 1 hour
* some random usage through the day, like checking online stuff.
* Since I go to work using the subway, the signal reception is quite poor, so the phone prolly was searching for signal during the day.
Even wifi draining a lot of battery, the phone battery was quite good for everything that I've done today.
Apart from the battery the whole system feels better, all the UI customizations done by SE are faster (timescape, mediascape, dialer and so on).
I can say, like all of you, SE did a good job on this update. I can't wait for the Q3 2.1 release. Seriously, I want 720p video recording so much
Greetings guys,
Whats the difference R2BA020 and B2FA020.
Thanks for your kind reply.

has anyone noticed any difference in call quality - in call volume especially
this was the thing i looked forward to getting the most out of this upgrade but no much difference i notice, still can't hear very well in any outside environment
i hope this issue becomes resolved...
I usually use headphones while outdoors, so I can't help here. Indoors it's been quite good, at least for me.

I was on fw 16 and it was a litter bit low but still fine, didn't notice any difference between 16 and 20 tho.
never heard of B2FA020 - Think it might have been a typo on someone's part?
Screen off while in call.
Not to start a new thread, I'll pin my question to this one. I've updated to R2BA020 (O2 Irl branded) and noticed that whenever in call the screen is not turning off, as it used to before. Did anyone else experienced this problem?

check your screen time out settings in the settings/ display/ screen timeout section.. it may be that it's reverted to a longer timeout period or to not time out at all.

Nope, still @ 15 seconds...
Though overall battery usage seems to be better with R2BA020 (Rogers), I've run into an odd issue:
When tethering via PdaNet, my battery drains at an alarming rate. It dropped 20% in the past hour. This wasn't the case before I upgraded (was using stock Rogers firmware before) - it would drain, but much more slowly, going from 100% to maybe 55% over the course of the 8 hours I was at work tethered. It's almost as if it's not charging at all via USB (or is charging much more slowly than before).
I checked, and the phone does register as charging while tethered. So I'm not sure what exactly the issue is. Nothing else has changed.
-edit-
Turned off PdaNet during a meeting I had today just to make sure my X10 is charging properly via USB, and sure enough it is (gained 12% charge over the hour).
after updating into R2BA020, my sim tool kit and play now were gone. Now, I want them back (especially STK). Does anyone know how to do it? My X10 is not rooted yet.
I'm pretty happy with the new Facebook app. It got rid of the "Camera" icon on the mainscreen and replaced it with "Inbox", which makes so much more sense.
My ringtones got reset, and I noticed that Astro File Manager lost a few file associations. I'm prompted for all sorts of default apps etc now, but it's just a minor annoyance.
I did the update through the Sony Ericsson PC Software. The first boot after update took a very long time on the Rogers splash screen. I was afraid the device was bricked for a couple of minutes. I guess it was just the first boot, and the Xperia was restoring all my user data.
Does anyone have comparison between R2BA020 and R2BA023? appreciate if it includes benchmarking between them.
