Well, as the title says I think my myTouch 3G Slide is defective. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem as me. I've had this phone for over 2-3 weeks. Anyway, on to why I think its defective. My screen that slides up seems to have a gap between it and the keyboard. When I first got the phone the screen was squeezed together with the keyboard. I haven't dropped the phone at all as I'm very careful with all my phones.
Does anyone else have this problem? Like a noticable gap between the keyboard and the screen.
No but I've heard of this problem.
A reviewer with a prototype on YouTube had this issue.
You need to return it for a replacement (before you do that though is there no way to snap it back together tightly?).

Yeah, that's what I tried to do on several occassions. I actually slept one night with my phone face down on top of my tv stand with a cleaning cloth under it so the screen didn't get scratches.
Once I looked at it the next morning for some odd reason the slide up part and keyboard were even more seperated, but thanks for the tip. I'll call T-Mobile tomorrow and tell em all about this issue.

I have the exact same problem basically. Mine has a gap, most noticeably at the upper left corner. It was flush against the keyboard side when I got it but got worse over time. I called tech care about it and my replacement arrives today!

I've looked at functional G2s at Walmart, Bestbuy, and now the T-Mobile store. At each, when held upside down, the screen fell away from the body. I've seen early reports from G2 early adopters that this was occurring, but never heard any response on whether it was 'normal' or not.
Obviously, the demo phones at retail have been handled by many people and are more worn than a new phone fresh from the box. The hinge on each felt loose. The TMO rep at the store today mentioned that the lift up movement of the G2 would preserves the keys and was able to demonstrate a rubbing effect on the Slide, for what thats worth.
My question is, fresh from the box, how stable/tight should the G2 hinge be? Trying to decide whether not to buy a G2 or a MT4G once full root has been achieved.
I have had my G2 for about a week now and I don't baby it and when held upside down it does not open. But my wifes same age does open. So they age all different I think.

I have a first week G2 and it the screen does not fall down when held upside down. nor does the screen close on itself in landscape mode while being rotated all angles.
My G2 hinge falls down pretty easily when help upside down. It in no way feels flimsy, just a nuisance if you tend to text while laying down on your back, which I don't do much of, but hey, there's an on-screen keyboard that fixes that problem pretty quickly.
There are many ways to grip the phone while holding it upside down so the people who say that their screen doesn't open are holding it in a way where they're slightly making contact with a portion of the top half causing the screen to stay in place. As for me, it really isn't an issue because I never have a need to hold my phone upside down. In my pocket, it doesn't open. It only opens when I want it to. It feels sturdy and well built. There has been widespread paranoia over it due to its unusual design and people who handle it for the first time try holding it in all sorts of weird angles when they wouldn't normally do so in everyday usage. There is no defect.

Thanks for the replies. Still torn on between the MT4G and the G2. Want a physical keyboard and prefer stock Android, but the MT4G feels more solid because it lacks the hinge.
I've had my g2 for a month and the hinge on mine is still pretty sturdy. When I hold it upside down it doesn't open unless I shake it. I'm guessing the hinge issue is only with some phones.

My hinge opens when I hold it upside down, but to get it to do it you have to hold it only by the back half, and really who does that, truth is its never bothered me, even when texting upside down the way I hold my phone it cant close by itself , this phone is worth getting, and perm. roots only a matter of time. I love the keyboard, it was kinda akward at first, but now I dont think I would be happy without it now. I haven't played the the MT4g yet but I can say im 100% happy with my G2 and with all the new mods coming out everyday its only getting better.
people with big hands may be able to use a part of index fingers to hold the screen but for my hands, it's hard and uncomfortable. it's like supporting the weight of screen.
i was wondering if i should put on double sided tape or insert some thin plastic film around hinge to make it tight.
Yeah my index's hold the screen up and stable by default. But for people with smaller hand sit mite be uncomfortable. Either way the G2 is meant to be like this. Its the whole Z-hinge.

Please check out my amazing blog- http://elgamerlife.blogspot.com/
My phone, when holding the backend only, does hang the screen in open.
I, for one, don't care. I've never had the screen open on me. The only time my G2 would be upside down is if I'm lying on my back or I'm putting it down to hide my screen from people (or not ). When I use my keyboard, I hold it like I do with my game controllers and PSP; index fingers railing the sides of the keyboard and curving along the booty, middle fingers curved and pinpointed at the tips at symmetrical points on the middle line, and then the bottom of the keyboard lying on my ring finger and the equivalent.
I like how fast the screen opens and how easy it is after getting the gel case.

Only the white model.
The other colors looks decent.
Roomate ordered replacment g2, apparently they changed the design on the new ones being shipped because his is springloaded now. Sucks because I'm passed my 14 day remorse. With this new design this phone is amazing!

Seems this way. I got a new G2 a few days back and the hinge is rock solid.

If they DID change it up, I'm going to cry with joy. Can you two post the model numbers of the newer phones with solid hinges? It's under the battery.
EDIT: Err... the other of "you two" being pierrekid.

Appreciate it.
I just checked and both my first and second replacement are Part # 99HLW021-00 XE
I have really loose hinges on both of mine. I'm only 4 days into my remorse period on the second one. So I'm interested in this information as well.
I got my Z on Saturday and I'm generally WELL pleased with it.
My only issue is that when the phone is closed, the top half is not completely tight against the bottom half. When touching the left hand side of the screen the top half of the phone taps against the bottom half, and it's a bit annoying :-(
Does yours do this? My hinge is reasonably tight, so that's not an issue for me.
I did initally put a gel case on it which mitigated the problem ,since the edges of the case sat between the two halves of the phone, cushioning it so the tapping didn't occur - but i've had to take the case off because it meant i had trouble typing on the top row of keys.
I guess if i can find a case that's thin enough on the top half to not interfere with the typing then my problem will be solved...

Its the way the phone is designed, they will all be like this.
The "clicking" sound when using the touch screen has been something I have noticed a couple of times in the last week, but its nothing to worry about.
Hmmm, well that sort of reassures me a bit that i don't have a dud. Even still, i have to say i'm a bit disappointed as it detracts from the otherwise brilliant build quality...
Has anyone found a case that clips on, yet is not too thick that it interferes with typing on the top row?

This case is very popular and for a good reason - it's really cheap and does the job well (thin/light). Only beef I have with it is that the finish tends to peel off once in a while, but considering the price, well...

Amazon sellers charged too much for shipping so I got it here (check the seller's other items I think he lists it again for cheaper...)
Thanks for that Pickx, i've ordered one of those.

So I have noticed a fairly large grouping of dust has collected under my screen on the top left corner. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this and how did you get it taken care of?

Happens to a lot of people including myself. I just deal with it since I can only see it during the day in the sun. You can take it to the spring store and they might fix it for you.

I have recently noticed the same thing in the same upper left corner. I switched from my oversized battery and cover back to the original battery and cover to see if that helps prevent it from getting worse.

I've been using a different back as well, for the powermat charger. I wonder if that is what caused it. Well, off to the sprint store I guess. We'll see what they say.

I have the same problem in the upper-left hand corner. I didn't have an extended battery until today. Completely stock, even got the dust while I had my screen protector on. I do notice that my phone has what I think is called "screen separation". Sometimes when I press down on the screen, it feels strange like it is separated. Hasn't affected the operation of the phone, but it's not too big of a deal for me to take back to Sprint yet. I only notice the dust when the screen is completely black and in direct light, too.

I actually noticed the dust under my screen about two weeks ago and have not made it to the sprint store yet. Should I even bother going there or are they not going to do anything for me? I have the Total Equipment Protection as well.
I've noticed dust under my screen as well. What sucks is the dust is right on top of the front facing camera ....maybe this weekend I will take it to the sprint store and see what they say.
Yeah I have it too, also have a blown speaker for the 2nd time -______-. I took it in to get fixed and they gave me a new screen (awesome) but forgot to put a earpiece back in. Looks like im just ignoring the 2nd time i got dust under the screen and gonna fix the rear speaker myself, or try to at least.
If they have any displays in stock, they'll replace it on the spot. Just make sure you tell them you want a brand new component. The store I took it too put a display that was all scratched up and nicked on the edges on my phone as if I wouldn't mind. How insulting!
does it stain easily? and how good is the gps and WiFi?
the reason why im asking about the gps and wifi is because my G2's Gps is broken(i broke it) and my WiFi is utter crap because of no known reason(my router is in my room and i only get 1-2 bars)
p.s. i got the my touch from the valentines special my dad changed our plan to a 2yr agreement and got 4 free my touches
have you tried custom roms on the G2? that could be a issue. it doesnt stain super easy but yea better to get a cover for it and the GPS is accurate i use it for when i drive and navigation and i dont really use the Wifi just cause the HSDPA+ speed is faster than what i have.

yea ive rooted my G2 and basically the entire crap was defective Weak Wifi Signal No Gps antenna and when you slided the phone there was a big gap between the phone and the keyboard like you could look through it you could see the ribbon cable and through the other side and when you touched the screen with the keyboard opened it made this horrendous creaking noise
i hope HTC did a good job with this bad boy i cant wait to get it even i dont like the color white but whatever
Honestly if your going to out a case on it your not going to see the color of the phone anyways so doesn't really matter in the long run.

I upgraded phone a few days ago because my digitizer issues were becoming increasingly unbearable. Furthermore, I had this whitish ring around the edge of the screen. I'm thinking that the two might be correlated, and so I was wondering if anybody else could provide input.

I was having issues too, any amount of moisture on my fingers would cause my screen to go crazy, send text make calls hang up on calls.. was driving me nuts so I went out and got an HTC one S, as bell doesnt carry the one X, or any top of the line phones... anyway
I didnt like that the text wasnt as sharp on the one S and a few other things so I took it back and got a $20 screen protector put on my atrix at Solo and its been working great since. no white rim or screen peeling issues for far.
What did you upgrade to?
Edit: nm guessing S3 by your sig lol.
Yep, got the s3 and I'm loving it. I had the white rim on my atrix about a month after I purchased it, but never thought much of it. But I'm just perplexed as to how randomly the screen started to deteriorate since June that now I'm in search of a catalyst lol
