Now don't get me wrong, I love my Evo, but why would the tethering be so slow?
I can't direct link to results so I attached them as images, but the wifi tethering on the Moment was almost double the speed of usb tethering on the Evo.
Shouldn't the Evo be faster & shouldn't usb be faster than wifi in general too?
I am in a 4g coverage area, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Is there some way of getting faster connections?
What method are you using to USB tether?

Hi
The tethering speed on my computer is much slower than the actual speed on my phone. I tried both ICS and WMwifirouter via usb to tether. And they both show similar speed. So i don't think it's because of software.
0.5m kbs on computer vs 1.7m kbs on phone
do you guys know a solution for this?
before i used Samsung a777 to tether and the dl speed was 1200kbs
so i don't know if ATT now block smartphones form tethering?
Make sure in Settings/Connections/Connections you have set both networks to MediaNet and take out any proxy settings.
Not sure why it would be slower though.
I tether and the speed is the same without any tweaks.
Hi all,
I am wondering what type of speeds you guys get with 4G in tether mode. I easily get 10mbit all day long with 4G in non-tether mode (just using the phone) but my problem is with tether (via wifi tether or PDANET with USB connection).
When the phone is in tether mode I am maxing out at about 5mbit. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone know how to get around it, or what the hold up is?
Well I know my speeds are also limited when I am in USB tethering mode. I think it has to do with the USB max speed throughput. Not sure about wifi tether.
That's what I thought but the pdanet guys say the usb connection is good up to 20mbit
I finally left WM after many years and went to the dark side. I have a Droid X and friends have said just the tethering capability makes rooting my phone worth it. I'm on Verizon and it has a an app called 3G Mobile Hotspot which I use to connect my laptop to, or my kids iPod touches while I'm in the car. Are there any speed advantages or other reasons why USB tethering is better? I understand USB will not drain the battery, but other than that, any advantages? It is my understanding that I can also do wi-fi tethering, what is the difference between that and a wi-fi hotspot?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Yes, USB tethering uses less battery since you are not running the wifi radio in the phone
As for speed, I don't think there is a difference, usb and wifi speeds are much faster than 3g speeds.
Wifi tethering and hotspot are essentially the same, just different names.
Most of the wifi tethering apps on the market use ad-hoc mode, some wifi devices wont connect in this mode, I think the ipad, ipod and psp do not connect in this mode.
The 3g hotspot app that comes with the phone is nice since it uses wifi infrastructure mode, which is more compatible with wifi devices. Too bad it's an additional $20/month (unless you know the workaround!)
I hear that "Wifi Tether" on the market has support for this mode, but I have never been able to get it to work.
WiFi Tether for Root Users is an excellent application. It uses infrastructure instead of ad-hoc, so a wider range if devices can connect to it. And not having to pay an extra $20 a month is a nice advantage. Rooting is so worth it ^_^

Nice, I will have to try it again sometime
Thanks!
Makes perfect sense and answers the question on why I could get my kids iPod touches to connect to the hotspot on my HTC Touch Pro 2, but not my Droid X. Thanks for your help!
All: I just got my WiFi Xoom, and I have it tethered to my (rooted) HTC Thunderbolt using WiFi Tether.
It connects fine, but seems slow when using Speedtest.net - I only get about 2Mbps Down, and less than 1Mbps up. When I tether other devices to the Thunderbolt (4G LTE) I seem to get much better performance which seems more in line with the performance it is capable of.
So, I was curious to know if there was some sort of a limitation or issue with the WiFi speeds when tethering on the Xoom? I can't say I see speed issues with the Xoom when connected to an access point at home on a cable modem.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Rob
I dont know but the fist time I did a speed test with my TB and my laptop was very fast over 20BM, I did reset my phone and rooted one more time, now Im having the same problem :-( if someone know please help how to fix it!
Samthing here, when using the "internet connection" mode I get 20mbps but when using PDA net or Easy Tether on my TB it's like 1.5mpbs! Anyone got any ideas?
just did 2 quick tests with wifi tether and got about 6 down.
Is there a way I can USB tether my tablet to my phone? I believe 3.1 has USB host support, so if I got the USB adapter for my tablet would it be able to use it for internet? I don't want to buy the adapter before knowing if it's going to work.
The reason I'm asking is that I've always used USB tethering on my Evo 4G when tethering to my laptop, and I get great speeds. However, I tried wifi tethering for the first time today with my Galaxy Tab and found that download speeds won't go above 250 kilobits/sec, while upload speeds are 1.2Mbit/sec. From my phone the speedtest still shows 6-7Mbit/sec download speeds, which is the same that I get over USB tethering. Wifi tethered download speeds are also this slow when using my laptop. I tried disabling encryption and disabling CPU scaling (ie set min and max freq at 1Ghz) in case the phone was CPU bound, but it had no effect. The actual load on the phone was minimal during a wifi tethered speed test (3% usage). So there must be something wrong with wifi tethering on my phone.

<<would also like to connect tab to evo using tether ( my tablet sees it and displays "connected" but nothing loads in a browser.

Hmm, I wonder if logcat and/or dmesg have any useful info. It could be an issue of the usb networking driver not being present, or it could be something simple like the tablet not using dhcp to ask for an IP or DNS server.
