Is this normal?

I'll try to make this as short as possible.
Connectivity issues everywhere but work.
I have been speaking with T-mobile for atleast 3 weeks about my ongoing data connectivity issues, I rarely had 3g except for at work, and edge worked most of the time except for random data outages that seemed to last about 30 min or until I rebooted the device.
So about a week ago I had 2 more Service requests opened, you need 3 in order to aquire a trouble ticket with t-mobile. About 1-2 days after having these service requests opened, I started receiving pop ups "unable to connect to epc.tmobile.com" I would then have to manually turn my data connect back on, upon trying to power it on, it would prompt me to manage my connections or create a new one, I would then have to edit the apn and resave it.
So I thought well lets try one of the other apn's same issue except no pop up, my data connection would just drop, and I would have to turn it on and off 3 or 4 times. So I wiped the device and restored back to orginal settings- same issue.
I called t-mobile yesterday to check the status of my tickets after not being called back as promised for like the 8th time, I ended up telling the story to about 7 different people, Eventually coming to the conclusion that they first want to send me a replacement. So ok no big deal $10 bucks for shipping and $10 bucks to replace my armor. Lo and behold today it works amazing not 1 3g drop, slacker has not stopped playing in the middle of a song and my data connection has not randomly turned off.
EXCEPT
When I send or receive data in the form of a text msg.
Data will totally drop, It will come back as soon as I try to browse the web or wait about 5-10 minutes.
Any ideas?
If it isn't full 3G, then the data connection will pause to receive the text message.

How can you tell if its full strength? I read that the bars do not mean that 3g is full strength, just that the cell service is.
Either way, I have full bars and it does this at any location I test from.
It's just strange that everytime I speak with T-mobile my phone symptoms totally change.

Sorry, I meant when it is EDGE or GPRS, rather than HSDPA/3G.
Sometimes mine pauses a 3G connection too, but not all the time.

Ahh ok I see, good to know it shouldn't do it all the time , especially at places it did not happen prior.
Tested my gf's HD2 which is currently half way across Phoenix, Arizona. She now has the same disconnect from data problem after receiving a text with a picture.

ok so after some long searching, hours on the phone with PDA techs at tmobile, for the second time my phone's data no longer works.
basically i am on tmo for 6 weeks now. after having my wing for 3 weeks the data stopped working, called wetn though trouble shooting, the sent me a replacement. this past week on jan 10th, the data on the new replacement phone stoped working again. called tech again same steps, and they are going to send me a new phone.
at first they said it is a network issue, so to prove thats not the case i go to a friend with a wing, swap sims and his phone with my card worked, his card in my phone did not work.
just to try it i installed Open Touch v2.4 Biggy
which i am now im love with, but didnt change anything...
does anyone know how i might go around avoiding this from happening again.
also on a side note
when the phone attempts to connect and fails, it no longer makes/receives phonecalls or txts. have to power cycle the phone to be able to make calls..
so does any one know why this is happening to me or does tmobile just hate me
You just had a touch of bad luck. I've had my Wing for about a month and a half and I always get a strong signal anywhere, even in my 12th floor apartment in downtown brooklyn, where I always had trouble getting a signal in with my older phones.
maybe i miss spoke, i have full service, phone is purfect providing i dont make a data connection attempt
ok ill chart it out
Phone | Works
Data | Not Working
after trying data
phone and data dont work
for making calls i got 100% signal but not data..
well i just started having this problem last night except i cant make or receive calls niether :-/
im dieeeing here
i connects to tmobile network after manually connecting it and then i still cant make calls and the data connection has no conection at all :-/
im about to kill this phone once and for all
People with some Hermes (I think) were having problems with their radio chip overheating and destroying itself... I wonder if we're running in the same problem. HTC might have gotten some back chips.

use the reset button
that normally works for me if i try to connect to data and fail..
you know the name the wing
means the phone is built for flight, as in the one out my window its going on soon
I was having this problem back in September/October..
I would be working at a job site and would need to record the air temperature, so I'd connect to weather.com or accuweather.com. It would refuse to connect.. sometimes it would say the remote connection was refused.. I couldn't connect to any other sites either. Or I'd be chatting with my gf or best friend and would get disconnected out of nowhere and might have no phone signal at all. It drove me nuts. If my phone connection was still working, I would contact Tmobile customer service. Each time it turned out they were having data connection issues for the western US... although I live in Central US, I was still considered West hmm. It was around the same time that Tmobile was quietly changing their unlimited data plans from $29.99/month to $19.99/month.. or whatever the prices.
So.. I figured it wasn't my phone.
Around the end of that month my phone was working great.. no data probs at all.. at least not that i knew of :-D
The same problems happened for me at the beginning of the year.. but I'm assuming it was due to the insanely heavy traffic(bc of holidays, new years, vacationers, etc) the mobile network had at the time.
My phone and data are working great again without me having done anything about it.
Sometimes turning off the phone connection... which will cut off your data connection too... then reconnecting the phone and then data connection would make mine work. If not.. maybe running network wizard.
I know that didn't help, but I just wanted to say I experienced that as well.
Good Luck!!
Over the past couple days I have noticed a problem with my connection on my advantage. Before I go any farther, this problem has only been happening in one spot..where i work. Everyday when i get to work its all fine and dandy full tmobile connection as well as "tmoible edge" when i click on my signal bar at the top of the advantage screen. Then sometime throughout the day I guess i am loseing my Tmobile data connection, and i cant seem to get it back. I try updating weather, rss feeds, and any of my 3 email accounts and get an error that says:
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings..blah blah, nothing has changed with my connection settings at all. Why would it work in the morning and then not half way through the day? Its usually dead until around the time i get home from work. Although some days I have kept the data connection the whole day. Its just strange to me because I have full bars of tmobile service with the edge icon at work...at home i get iffy 1-2 bars service and no trouble with the data connection....maybe this is beyond the forum, and i shoulda posted it over at Howards, but I wanted to try you guys first. Thanks for any tips or advice!
OK....now its connecting...and I didnt do anything. Is it weird that I have full bars, and trouble with the Tmobile Data(edge) connection? Its about time i bite the bullet and scrap my Tmobile contract for ATT to utilize the 3G
AT&T had many outages during that timeframe (including here in Indy). The problem has been corrected. There's a lot about this over at HoFo.
EDIT: Maybe I should learn to read. You had trouble on T-Mob, not AT&T!
yah, i do have tmobile not ATT yet, however according to engadget reports they werent having any outages from their office in las vegas, which is where im at.
Ok, this is goofy.
Wifi works great
EVDO connects to internet and works great
3g shows 3 bars, but will not connect to internet
This is true even after a hard reset. Must be a settings issue? I did a hard reset, let it set up, and still same problem.
I got the same problem. Purchased the phone yesterday morning. I never had the data plan before. I called T-Mobile twice and they told me that it can take up to 48 hours for the data to kick in. If it doesn't work by tomorrow morning, I'll give them a call again.
i got the same thing too guys. it is fine now and i got a text message from tmo so it it cuts out again i will chime back in.
buy yeah, yesterday i lost connection twice for long periods of time, like a couple of hours.
Thanks for the info! Seems pretty weird that it works when I'm in an E area, but not on 3g. Maybe different towers or something. Friggin awesome phone though!
LOL, WTF
i just tried to go on yahoo on my hd2 just now after posting and guess what.... it's out again!
OK so I pulled the battery and popped it back in and my internet is back.
i hope this isn't a hardware issue!
Yeah, this is interesting. Popped my TMo sim into my Xperia, could only get E level of service for some reason but could connect to the internet. Put the sim back in my HD2, took it to the far corner of the basement where it drops to E service and it connects to the internet. Back in 3g zone and it won't connect at all. At least it seems to have a stronger antenna than the Xperia. I'll have to give them a call and see whats going on.
there was an issue with the settings...
you can try a couple of things first...
if you are familiar with windows (which sounds like you are), you need to go change the access point name (apn) to one of 2 options...
wap.voicestream.com
epc.tmobile.com
I called into customer service about same issue. I was told to power down, remove battery and start it again and check. It worked afterward.
Maybe it was due to them activating my new data plan, from Android data to Smart phone data. I don't know, just guessing.
I thought maybe I was having this same problem yesterday..
thought eh its all in my head.

This is tmoUS, guys. They're notorious for having ****ty 3G service. No point in having HSPA+ when the majority of the people are still reliant on EDGE. Hopefully by summer you guys will get decent coverage.

I'm in NYC. The 3G is good here. Rarely had problems. Probably only a day or something that I can remember.

It was set to epc.tmobile.com
I tried to change it to wap.voicestream.com, but that setting errored out.
Then couldn't get the epc.tmobile.com setting to work which is strange. Soo, did a hard reset and let it set up again. Same thing. I can connect to internet with Edge, but 3g even though it shows the signal bars and everything seems great will not connect to internet, download email, update weather, etc.
I too am have this problem... Sometimes web works great, other times no web but strong 3G.... I thought I was going crazy...
My internet was working really slow yesterday when I first got the phone (5-60 kbit/s). Called up tmo to ask if maybe they had set me up with just tzones or something. The guy said "no everything looks fine here...oh wait I see there's something that needs to be reset; I'm surprised you were getting internet at all." When I asked him what it was he said he "couldn't really explain what it was", to which I replied "..."
Anyway, it seems to be working fine now. Don't know if this could be related to the problems you're having, but giving tmobile a call couldn't hurt, maybe they can flip the magic unexplainable switch for you.
Ok so I couldn't get internet for two days now, I called T-mobile twice and told me to wait 48 hours. After thinking something was fishy, I looked at my receipt from Wal-Mart where I purchased the phone and I noticed something peculiar: "REQ Android Web: 30:00". Knowing damn sure I did not purchase an android phone, I called T-Mobile for the third time, complaining, so the first guy transferred me to another operator. He checked out my account and it turned out that I didn't have any data plan at all. So he added the plan and within 20 minutes I was surfing. Everything works great. I'm getting about 850 kbps in northwest Indiana.
It's very interesting that the first two operators I called never even bothered to look at my account to see if I have a data plan.
Just discovered new regarding the no data issue.
I had the no data problem again today, even though it was working in the morning. I decided to reboot and check, but then I noticed the 'Terminate Data Connection' option when I hold down the power button. So I tried it. It killed the data connection and when I went into Google Maps, the data connection reactivated and everything was fine again.
So, it may be a bug!
When I'm using wifi at home, every couple of minutes the HSDPA and HSUPA arrows appear between the wifi and signal strength bars. As far as I know they shouldn't appear when wifi is connected. The problem is that when the arrows appear, I loose all data connection until they go away.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks
So basically when you connect to wifi, then you still have the H+ icon at the top of the screen, however, there isn't suppose to be any data arrows there?
I was wondering about this because on the Evo once you connect to wifi, the 3G icon goes disappears.

Right. I see that H+ on mine too, even after connecting to wifi. It shouldn't be there!!! And I think this is one possible reason why I keep losing my wifi on this phone every other minute, and keeps switching to H.

I am also experiencing this. It is frustrating because it is the only issue that I am having with the phone, but I am on wifi for probably 90% of the day. It is annoying when it happens. Usually turning wifi off and then on again fixes it. Still, I should not have to do this.
Yeah the H shouldn't be there either I think, but the problem is when you see the arrows under the H. Like the phone is trying to download data through HSPA while on wifi but fails at both.
BTW, as many have said, the phone is working flawlessly. This is the only issue I'm having. Probably DG can fix this!
Just got off the phone with ATT and they told me that even though you're on wifi, some data is still carried over where it goes towards your data plan...wtf! I definitely don't like this one bit.
I called them because I was connected to wifi but on my att online account, I noticed that my data usage had increased.
I'm about to get off work so I had to rush while I was on the phone with them. When I get home I'm going to give them another call so that I can better understand this crap. I have no clue why our wifi usage should count towards our data plans.

Not to mention, even if I accepted the fact that they were still putting some amount of data over my data plan even while on wifi... why am I losing all network connection to my phone while this data transfer occurs... Something is definitely not right here.
It seems to be a common issue, there are a ton of threads about this on the Motorola support forums for this phone. I'm having the same issue, it's horribly worse if you are on a call. Whenever I am on a call and phone phone is on wifi and I try to do anything web related it take a long time to load any data, most of the time it won't and it will kick off my wifi and go back to 3g data.
I'm giving it a few more days to see if Motorola replies about this issue, otherwise I'm gonna have to take both atrix's back... this is a pretty big deal breaker for me.

I love these posts because it is also my situation. Check your data and make sure it's not being hemorrhaged like mine was (50MB/DAY!!).
Here is how to stop all data: go into wifi settings, then hit that menu button and settings, change it to never sleep. then go into all your programs and hit never update, manual, whatever. PAIN IN THE ASS but hey...thats the Atrix for you. I returned mine.
When I'm on wifi it shows the H but the arrows don't light up, if I lose the wifi connection it won't load webpages or the market so I think its been working for me
Hello everyone,
I just bought a Moto G4 16 GB with Amazon Ads for my wife, but we are facing a very annoying problem: the carrier signal always dies after 24 hours give or take. We tested with a different SIM card and the same thing happened. When this happens the device only shows "Emergency Calls Only" and we have to reboot the phone in order to get the signal back.
So, is anyone else facing this problem? Is this really a problem with this phone in particular or every moto g4 has this problem? Should I return the device to amazon?
Thank you very much for any information you can give me!

No problems here since I got my phone last week and I have T-Mobile. You might have to check your apn settings with your carrier.

I tested the SIM card in a different phone and it worked flawlessly (I also use T-Mobile). The strange thing is that the phone gets the signal very well during more or less one day, after that I have to reboot to get signal again.
Well, this is probably a problem in the device. I already asked Amazon to send a replacement.

Thank you, but I just use the t-mobile network. In fact, my carrier is called campusSIMs and it is a MVNO that uses t-mobile network. So, my APN configs are a bit different from yours.
However, I didn't know about this mobile data thing. I didn't touch the developer options. Maybe, it can be a good idea.
Thank you!
It won't be your APN settings since that controls your data settings. If the sim is ok then it could be your phone.
Sent from my SM-T530NU using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'm seeing a similar problem with the data portion of the network (also on T-Mobile). While I'm able to send and receive calls and texts, data doesn't work. There's no indication that it's attached to LTE or even 3G (just a standard signal bar with no other information). I moved the SIM card back to the old phone it was in and it works fine.
Things actually worked yesterday, so something happened overnight to break it.

That could possible be the APN settings. Although usually it's the opposite, they don't work at first then they update from the network later on. Most times the APN settings will set themselves but on the odd occasion they need to manually edited. I don't use T-Mobile but the APN settings are easy enough to find.

Sounds like you need to manually enter the APN settings. What you describe is exactly what happens when it hasn't loaded an APN.
I'm "kinda" having an issue here. It's a little different though; the phone works ok for a while (for me about 3 hours, usually), and then I still get an LTE indicator, but have no network connection (get errors in apps/"No internet" page in chrome).
Other times, I lose LTE and get locked in 3g (H indicator), and can only get LTE back by going to Settings/More/Cellular Networks/ and toggle preferred network mode to 2g or 3g, let it connect (H or E), then toggle back to LTE.
Motorola responded to a bad Amazon review requesting I post asking for help on their forums.

I'm active over on their forums also and it's good to post over there in case you ever want to do a soak test. They look at your posts there when they ask for soak testers. As for your problem, I've seen it shift back and forth if you are in an area between towers and one isn't sending out LTE. If it were that I wouldn't think you'd get it back so easily. There's an app, don't remember the name, that will show the towers and signal relative to your location, If might be interesting to look at that.
Having the same issue with radio. Just replied to your post, Kalash.
Ok, we got a new phone from Amazon and it has the same problem. So, I believe this phone does not work very well with MVNOs.
I notice that the problem is that the phone cannot reconnect to the network after losing the signal. For example, if you go to an area with bad signal and, eventually the signal vanishes, the phone will not be able to reconnect to the carrier network. The phone only reconnects after reboot. Airplane mode does not solve the problem.
This does not happen with my Blu Life One X. So, I think it is a software problem.

That's not true on all mvnos' apparently. My wife's phone is on Consumer Cellular, an AT&T mvno and it's never done that. We've been in a no service area several times and it's always connected immediately when getting service back.
