OTA Update, none stop reboot - EVO 4G General

Received a message that there was an update available for the EVO, so I proceeded to downloading and applying the update. That was about two hours ago. It has since, continuously cycled through as if it is installing the update.
I finally removed the battery about five minutes ago, but as soon as I installed the battery, it started doing the same thing. Another thing I noticed is the phone is really hot, as compared to normal use.
My EVO was unmodified. Any suggestions?

Pray cause it sure doesn't sound good!

EVO battery and restarting problem

Hello all,
I've had my EVO for about 2 months so far. I've notice just like everybody that the battery life sucks to hades. I've rooted the phone since then.
1st problem) Maybe it's me or it's a problem no one addressed yet, The phone will start getting hot when it is in standby mode. When the back light goes out it gets hot. I've check to see if there were any wild or un-needed services running and there isn't, and its not like McDonald's Coffee hot but very very warm to the touch. And when it does that the battery life starts at 100% and ends at 20% within 40 minutes.
2nd problem) I've installed two programs in which I've deleted since the time it happen. A Super User Permission app, the one that's gray and has the jolly roger look to it. The next one is Juice Defender. I notice the problem after I installed them that the phone will start restarting itself like every 3 or 5 minutes. I'll be in the middle of a phone call and it would go blank and restart. The only time I notice it doesn't do it is when I connect it to the computer while I have debug on and when I do a hard restart in which I pulled the battery out. The battery trick only lasts for about half a day. I installed those apps 4 days ago, both at the same time.
My phone info is:
Software #
1.32.651.1
Firmware version:
2.1-update1
please help!!!! it's driving me up the wall.
I'm no expert but it sounds like a rogue app to me. If my phone were doing that i would wipe it and start from scratch.
Just my thoughts.......

Try updating to one of the rooted 2.2 Froyo ROMs. Be sure to do a full wipe (data, cahe, dalvik-cache) before installing a new ROM, unless otherwise instructed. You're running an old software version of Eclair (current Froyo is 3.26.651.6). I've received considerably better battery life since the update to Froyo, especially with a custom ROM and custom kernel. I personally run both SetCPU and Juice Defender with no problems or any overheating issues.
Mostly it sounds like you have something locking your CPU usage at 100% which would explain the heat and battery drain. I suspect you may be having software conflicts using the old OS version. Do a Nandroid backup before flashing a different ROM so that you can rollback to your exact setup you currently have if you do not like the results of the updated ROMs.
And by all means, DO NOT flash an unrooted stock Froyo ROM (or take any OTA update). There still is no method to root that.
Yeah I have been debating the whole wipe the phone and start with the 2.2 OTA and wait till they root that. This is driving me mad, cause it's seems it knows when I need it the most. When I'm at the house it last and stay up like a champ, when I leave it starts acting up.
Which leaves me with the question how do you save the apps on your phone?

Appbrain is a good way to manage apps. Any paid apps should still show up in your downloads section of the market after a hare reset. I have no battery problems with the ota 2.2 patiently waiting root. Don't know if I'll root when they do figure it out because its pretty stable with decent battery life for me.

So today is Day Two since I changed the ROM. I have notice alot has changed, some things are new, and some things are working that never work before. It's like having a new phone all over again. LOL
I also use the instructions in the thread about battery life
Edit: I can't link it due to new user access. But its in the General fourm.
15 hours and I haven't plugged it up yet to recharge it yet I still have 60% left on the battery. I made 8 phones calls that lasted 2 mins and more, plus ran the music app and more.
I want to thank you guys for your help
Do you getting more then24 hours on a stock battery?
Do you keep 3g on and always connected checked?
You have to be a real light user
No sir.... by no means I'm I a light user. As I stated I use my phone pretty heavy and that was only day two that I done that.
Yes....I now get more then 24 hours out of the stock battery.
At 7am I unplug and jet out to work. I use my phone as a MP3 player for the car. 30 minute drive to and from. When at work I play games and make random phone calls for 9 hours of the day. SN: I'm doing my job also When I leave work I go to my gf's house which has no signal out there. I use to have to put it on Airplane Mode to save the battery. Now I just leave as is without changing it.
Total time using the phone in 24 hours: 14 hours
Times I charged my phone in 24 hours: 0
Battery Percent in 24 hours after 14 hours of use: 45%
Longest hours since unplugged: 2d 2h 4m 10s with a 50% life left.
Yes I keep my 3G on. I turn my GPS off and Background Data, Set the weather app or widget to update every 6 hours (Why would you need to know the weather every hour on the hour, Just press update when you open the weather app) along with other things I don't need running while I'm at work or even not using them.
This is with the OMJ Froyo 2.2 Rom update. The phone is still running smooth and as it should (in my opinion)
One minor but major problem to some I wish they would fix.
Multi-touch though out the whole phone. The Droid X, Incredible, and Nexus 1 has it.
Why can't we have it. I would be so happy if we can get that.

Sprint Update Ruined my Epic! - No 4G!

I've been trying hard to avoid the Epic update, since my phone was working great. I was getting almost 20 hours battery before being asked to charge, using about 30 minutes phone calls, 1 hour "display on" time, bluetooth/wifi off, GPS only when needed.
The nagging update available message would always pop up, and I'd always tell it to install later.
Somehow, I must have accidentally selected update while getting out of the car today, since I saw the phone installing firmware and then reboot.
After the reboot, my Sprint Hotspot stopped working. Now when I activate it, it turns my 3G radio off. Prior to this, I could activate (and use) Sprint Wifi tethering even though I am not specifically subscribed to it. Now, it still "activates" but shuts down my data connection.
Even worse, when I try to activate 4G, it just hangs the phone. I tried factory resetting, which did not solve the problem. Still no more 4G. Also, I noticed my battery getting really hot, and the smell of smoke inside the case. The battery went from 50% to 9% within a minute!! I don't have any explanation on how the update caused this.....
This update fried my phone! I'm going to try the Odin method back to DG27. If that doesn't work, the phone is going back!
DO NOT UPDATE if you can avoid it!!
that sucks
I'm having a really really hard time believing the ota update had anything to do with anything you described.

Me too, but I don't know what else could have caused it. Just tried Odin, still can't get 4G to work.
I don't think there's much else I can try. The phone just hangs when I enable 4G. Tried factory reset, Odin back to DG27. No luck.
Any ideas?
Dont listen to this guy -- you want the DI07 update on your phone. It has vital improvements to the radio and kernel. It doesn't break 4G or ruin battery life.
it has happened to many of us,including me..i also started a thread in the development forum..i talked to a service rep and they instructed me to do a msl reset, which required a msl code the give and no luck..this happened to me last week.since then i swapped my phone for another unit an was weary of updaing again, but i did and everything works fine now.im guessing a bad batch of phones or bad dowload/install of update ota.return it for another

Before the update, I was getting about 14-15 hours of battery with my average daily use. After the update I'm swapping batteries every 6 or 7 hours. I started tracking power consumption a few days ago with Spare Parts. I flashed back to stock with odin, and installed the DI07 update. The only apps I installed were Battery Indicator Pro and Spare Parts. I noticed right away that the running time was always close to 100%. That means that the phone is not sleeping. Under "Partial Wake usage", Android System is running almost the same amount of time the phone is powered on. It's not spiking the CPU, but running just enough to create a partial wakelock. This behavior is consistent on every boot. Normally, Android System should only keep the system awake about 3 or 4 minutes per hour of uptime at most. I think they botched something in the update.
Tonight I reverted back to DG27 and the problem is now non-existent. I only have one Epic to test, so I'm curious to see if anyone else gets different results. If it's just my Epic, then I will be returning it for another.
Anyone feel like experimenting?
I'm going on 18 hours now since I reverted back to DG27 and I'm still on the same battery. I would be on my third battery right now if I was still running DI07. I don't think I'm gonna be updating till Sprint releases another fix. Other than Media Hub and the loss of battery life, I noticed no changes while running DI07.

I'm getting over 18hrs since update. It maybe just like the HTC phone when you flash the rom the battery life goes down for the first few full charges then after that it's fine. Maybe I'm just lucky because I'm not having all the drama you guys and others are having.

Any why should we listen to you? Can you describe your source of knowing how this update has "vital improvements" to the radio and kernal? What are the nature of these improvements?
Thanks
-Everyone
Not sure what the particular improvements are... but check your phone info and you will see that the baseband was changed, which means a new radio was implemented. Also, in the release notes it specified that there were some "Qualcomm Updates", and since Qualcomm engineers the radio in our phones, it doesn't take much brain capacity to put 2 and 2 together.
I've updated and have experienced none of these problems. (As I suspect is true of most of the people here.)

It ABSOLUTELY ruins battery life. If it doesn't ruin your battery life specifically, then your one lucky sun of gun. It cut my battery life in half. I used to be able to go to 11pm and never even get a battery warning! Now, my phone completely shuts down by late afternoon while I'm still at work. DI07 is a horrible update. I don't know what Samsung/Sprint did, but my screen is dimmer, battery life took a major dump, and the phone does not seem any faster, actually slower if anything. My phone also seems to be hot all the time, even after it's supposedly been asleep for hours. With DG27 it was always felt cool when pulling it out of my holster and not hot like it is now.
Testing...testing
After running DG27 for almost 24 hours with great results, I decided to give the DI07 update another shot. But first I made a Nandroid backup in CWM before I accepted the update. After about two hours on DI07, it was clear the phone was not sleeping again when the screen was off.
So now I'm gonna try another experiment. I've done a system restore from my Nandroid backup to DG27. Except that the Baseband(radio) is still DI07 because Nandroid doesn't touch the radio. I'm thinking that this will tell us if the new radio is the culprit, or if they just botched something in the DI07 ROM.
Dev's, let me know if I'm off base here. I will report as soon as I have any relevant results.

Heres what will help:
Run the root script, delete all sprint bloatware, and keep track of all the services running on your phone. I'm getting 20 hours of battery with heavy usage on the DI07 update.
Also, try the bump charging method which has helped me a lot. Turn the phone on, let it fully charge, unplug, let it fully charge, turn back on.. rinse and repeat. It helps.
The update is not what is causing bad battery life. The screen dimming is part of the auto-brightness setting and/or power saving setting which should be helping the battery more than killing it.
Get System Panel/spare parts or any kind of task manager to MONITOR (not kill) processes running on your phone.
Here's a post from another forum, so I'm not the only person with a dead 4G radio. I believe it was temporally related to the update, but reverting back to DG27 didn't fix it.

"I have been out of town in a non-4G area since applying the DI07 update. Got home earlier today and just went to turn on 4G and it no longer is working!!
When I enable 4G (through the pull-down or the settings menu) now it just says "On..." and then "Unknown..."
Anyone else that has applied the update and lives in a 4G area seeing similar behavior?? I am currently backing up me SMS messages so I can do a hard-reset to see if that will fix it."

Infamous,
These are all good suggestions for basic power management under normal circumstances, but for some reason this update has introduced an issue that causes the Android System process to prevent the phone from sleeping. Why it's not affecting everyone I don't know. Some people had to take their phones back to the Sprint store after the update because they got so hot and would not cool down unless turned off.
Anyway, if you are getting 20 hours on heavy use, you obviously don't have the bug. But to anyone who thinks they might, you can check using Spare Parts.
First, if you've just rebooted, turn the screen off and let it sit for a few minuets. Open Spare Parts and click Battery history. By default it displays 'Other usage'. If your 'Running' percentage is 100% or close to it, and your 'Screen on' percentage is anything other than your 'Running' percentage, then your phone is not sleeping when the screen is off.
Next change the top tab from 'Other usage' to 'Partial wake usage'. This will show you what is preventing it from sleeping. You can click on whatever is at the top of the list to see its partial wake time. If it's 'Android System', the partial wake time should not be any more than about 1 minute per hour of system uptime. For example, if your phone has only been on for 10 minuets, and 'Android System' has a partial wake time of 2 minutes, you have a problem.
Found more info here.

This is great info, according to Spare Parts and your info, I have a severe problem. I have just killed DRM
The update went through automatically Sat night, battery has dived at least
50%. Reboot at that time.
Battery History
Total in all Time Since Reboot (2 days)
Running 30.5% 99.7
Screen On 16.7 18.3
I see the problem, don't know if DRM dead will fix, is there anything else I can do?
I am rooted (or at least I was, I stayed stock and added Wireless Tether, it is broken). So not happy there either.
I will charge and check this tomorrow to see what changes or if there are any other suggestions.
Thetwo apps running none stop are I! Agent Service in Android System and GTalkService in Goggle, using over 10 mb ram
Other usage is still almost 100%, Screen time has gone down, but Wifi On is same as Running and I have it turned off every which way I can find as with nothing showing on top bar.
Partial Wakelock: Andoid System is on 113 hrs of25 since boot.

4.1.83 - random reboots a thing of the past?

I realized today that I hadn't had a random reboot in a while. From day 1 I could count on 1-2 random rebooted with my Atrix.
Sure enough, my uptime is 280hrs+, which is in line with when I took the OTA update. My wife's phone appears to be the same, and it was rebooting at a similar rate to mine before the update.
Both are rooted/non market enabled but not modded.
How's your stability been on 4.1.83?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I had one strange reboot this morning, my phone had been lagging up a lot, along with the screen not turning on when I pressed the sleep button.
I look down a minute later and I see the Motorola logo. But afterwards it seemed just dandy.
Random reboots
I just bought this phone Friday at 7:45pm. It was working fine when I got home Friday night after purchasing it. I hooked it up to my pc and got the needed updates to 4.1.57.MB860.ATT.en.US. Saturday morning I installed one game bejeweled and advance task manager before heading out to work.
I got back home around 1:30pm and started setting up my contacts on the phone. Around 6:00pm I left the phone plugged into my pc and heard the phone rebooting from the other room. At first I thought maybe there was an update and that's why it was rebooting.
Two hours later it did the same thing again with no warning about a reboot when I was manually adding new contacts. I notice there was another update available to version 4.1.83 which I now have installed on the phone and it's still rebooting on its own.
I also noticed that my battery was right at 60% and while plugged up to my pc it was only recharging 10% every hour on the hour not sure if that's normal for this phone.
(Two hours later battery power at 90% with a solid green power light visible but taking forever to reach 100%)
Also right after the 4.1.83 update the phone would reboot and then the battery light on the phone would just randomly flash red with the motorola logo sitting on the screen. I had to pop the battery out, waited for about 30's before putting the battery back in and powering it back up and it still sat on the logo screen with the red flashing light.
(The battery is now at 100% but 3mins after unplugging it from the pc it displays 90% again all I've did is watch it reboot on its own.)
I removed the battery again but waited for about 5mins before powering it up and this time it actually booted up like normal and about 30mins later another reboot.
I also noticed that as soon as I finish watching a video with youtube the phone reboots a few seconds after the screen goes to sleep. Now as I am writing this comment I decided to uninstall that advance task manager program and do a reboot. The phone is at 80% and after I watch about three videos with youtube the phone didn't reboot.
I have no idea what's up with this phone and I really like it alot except for this mysterious rebooting not to mention other people experiencing random reboots. I read online where a lot of people where saying it was due to a bad battery and that they got a new battery from Att and the problem went away.
I am really thinking about turning this one in for a new replacement but some people are saying even after doing that they still kept having the problems.
Could this really be something wrong with the updates that is causing issues with the phone or is it just a bunch of bad batteries?
Battery?
Back again, in the post I made earlier I mentioned how the phone wouldn't randomly reboot when the battery was around 80% well the battery charged to 90% and the random rebooting has started up again and it has rebooted 3 times back to back now that it is at 90%.......I think I am going back to the Att store when they open today and try getting a new battery............

If I were you I would get a replacement phone. I did have one random reboot since updating to 4.1.83 and that was the first ever I've noticed with my phone. Otherwise I haven't noticed any issues. As for charging via a pc I did hear that was slow. I charge via power outlet or using a car adapter and both are fairly quick. Good luck.
Battery?
I decided to do a factory reset on the phone first and the funny thing is after the reset, the phone still showed that it had the latest update installed even though I still had to go through the setup process just like when I first purchased the phone. So far it appears to be working and hasn't rebooted on me yet. No rebooting after playing Youtube videos either. The only small pet peeve I have at the moment is the Facebook & MySpace contact photos will not show up for some unknown reason in the contacts sections, they're just empty picture frames. The contact photos that do show up are the ones from my google gmail account and I manually added those online myself so those automatically transfer when my phone syncs with the gmail account.
And the MySpace widget doesn't show a photo as well but the info in the widget is current. That's way better than experiencing random rebooting when you really need your phone the most.

This is normal. A FR cleans all of the user data reseting it back to a "clean" version of the flashed rom.
I can say that I have also not had any reboots since .83 but it is also the first time i have loaded gingerblur.

Nexus 4 radio issues, battery issues, constant reboots

I purchased my nexus 4 on release from the Google Playstore (UK) over 2 years ago now, recently updated it to stock 5.01 and have been bombarded with problems.
When using the phone, after about an hour of use it will suddenly ask me to re-input my sim card pin (I'm assuming this is a radio issue). After doing so, more often than not the phone will then just shut down - sometimes with a screeching noise?! At this point the battery still has around 50-60% left, when I then turn the phone on again, the battery suddenly drops and I usually see the figure to around 1-10%. This has required me to charge the phone 2-3 times a day in order for it to function, extremely annoying that the radio seems to fail and not pick up any network signal after the phone drops past 60% battery.
I've attached an image of my battery life to show what I mean about the drop - it's quite frustrating as I've looked after the phone extremely well so I can't understand why these problems are occurring.
Any help would be much appreciated!

To be honest, they all sound like gremlins from old data left in the partitions from the previous OS versions. I am on 5.0.1 and experienced none of those issues, in fact, it runs like butter. I would suggest a full wipe and see if that fixes the issue. Residual data can cause these sorts of random issues.
OP I have the issue with radio after a fresh factory image install. I have signal but cellular data will stop flowing. This is intermittent. Switching to airplane mode sometimes fixes the problem, but sometime I have to reboot. Considering going back to KitKat.
If you using android 5.0.0-5.0.1 - this can be android bags. i have this too it make me crazy!
I managed to get round to rebooting today (had exams lately so literally no time to sort the phone out). Did a factory reset and still the same issues, in fact it's gotten progressively worse since the last time I posted, battery cuts out at around 80% (switched off today at 87%). I get about 40 mins on screen time and bam, shuts down, I'm able to switch it back on in a minute or two, where I then see it down to about 15%. The fact that it's continuously asking me for my sim card pin is insanely frustrating, even more so when it shuts down RIGHT after i put it in.

Battery life issues

So I've been running custom roms since I purchased this phone in November 2015 and know my way around android quite well, but a new issue has happened that I cannot figure out. Until 3 days ago my battery would last all day, then on Saturday my phone from a 100% charged state would be dead within an hour. I tried battery optimization to no avail, and flashed three different roms, tried a fresh rom with no apps aside from the gapps package and still no change. The phone shows no sign of expanding battery. Have any of you experienced something like this and if so what was your solution?

If ROM and apps don't make any difference, it's hardware... I assume you used GSAM or Better Battery Stats and didn't find the cause? If so, likely the battery needs replacing. It's unusual to see it fail suddenly, it usually fades gradually, but it isn't unheard of.
