Obviously the OTA is real as the 3g hotspot, and boot animation has changed and possibly wireless N bc of new kernel. We worked way to long and hard obtain root to lose it and the best is yet to come as far as that goes. Im not talented enough to compile a safe ota to keep root but that would b great. He'll he may have gotten froyo and don't know it lol. So hopefully some of u guys are smart enough to figure this out. Let the ideas flow

That's all I got! lol
Edit: I missed the point
Need the update url first. Do you have the prompt for the ota?
No. But for some reason my phone never took the first ota. I have a pre order version with hboot 0.77. I haven't been prompted with the new yet. Just not super confident i can get back into adb if needed.
What do i need to do if i get the prompt?

Have logcat running while you apply the update. You will see the URL for the update in the output.
Code:
adb shell logcat

Any time you get an OTA update, you have to re-root. Just do the same root process you did before to get root and you'll be fine again.

Just throwing this out there, give it another go? That sounds like a cruel thing to say to someone who Im sure has been trying but maybe just maybe....... I have the eris also. And can use adb commands.sorry if this is stupid
Should be able to use adb commands. Battery pull, then try again? Not sure, assuming you rooted from your computer, adb should be set up correctly, but now you can't use adb? But if you didn't use that computer to root then just need to follow the steps to set it up

Does unrooting the phone actually let you run the update because currently I am not able to run the update successfully and I am rooted. (I had removed some stock apks but have since replaced them all accept for the need for speed apk)
Also to unroot your self just delete superuser.apk?
Should I update. I don't understand how I get this update when I am rooted with slidemeroot5r1
do you want your root? i have an incredible and i wuld not update for froyo if it came out. if there is no word of it on xda mt3gs dev section, then i would not pay mind to it.

Will you adb shell into the device when you get a chance?
I think you would need to look in the /cache directory for the update.zip & then could you adb pull it then upload it for me.
Thanks,

Eugene could u post steps on how to do this I ain't to good with with this and only got rooted cause I followed ur steps excatly. Also how do I remove the update icon from my status on the top left it will not give me an the option to clear notifications
First things First..
What OS win / mac / linux are you using?
I assume you have Root, so You already have adb installed...
in terminal
adb shell
cd /cache
ls -l
From here you need to poke around & look for the update.zip
Once you find the update.zip, you would run the following
( If still in adb shell & using windows )
exit
adb pull /cache/update.zip c:\update.zip
This will place the update.zip in the root of c:\ if using windows.
If in the States I'm more than willing to call you to help walk you through it..
Any luck? Dying to get ahold of an official update.zip
Once you get it pulled, we will Move onto removing the notification regarding the update.
Thanks,
~Eugene
I believe you can pull it from astro too if you navigate to /cache, I may be wrong. If you do manage to get the update.zip for the update upload it and I can add root to it quickly.

Will there be an option to download the flash the stock 2.2 update from samsungs website or from sprints website. Waiting for the OTA update is going to drive me nuts....

You will get it from here long before it shows up on Sprint or Samsungs website. From my understanding the first four days are ota only.

I just picked up my nexus S about an hour ago and so far I love it. This is my first smartphone so I have some noob questions. If I want to install a 3rd party keyboard (like swype) how/ where do I do this? How do I update the os to the nexus s? If I hook it up to my computer is it automatically gonna start updating it or something? I am not sure that I want the gingerbread 2.3.3 update because I love the display as it is now and dont want it changed.
For swype, just Google swype beta and sign up. I believe registration is open right now. As far as updates, your phone will eventually prompt you if you want to update. If you choose yes, it will download the update to your phone and perform the update.

Even I have the same doubt, how will I be able to upgrade to 2.3.3?
You can manually update if you follow the guides in the development section. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for the ovrr thr air update that they are in the process of pushing out right now. There's no way to determine when your device is marked to receive it. Could be minutes, hours, days.

If you're running the stock ROM (with root), you still have the ability to check-in for OTAs. If you wanted root, why'd you accept the OTA?
If you haven't gotten the update yet, please download aLogcat off the market here. When you get the notification that an update is available, don't accept it yet. Open aLogcat, press Menu, choose Filter, and type "FOTA" without quotes. Find the line that includes "FOTA_UPDATE" and somewhere in the line should be a URL ending in ".zip". Post that URL to either this thread or this one so that we can all download it, then you can accept and install the update.

Just got update prompt this morning and came here to check up on root after update and saw this. Did what you said for aLogcat, all I got is this:

Not seeing any URL, am I doing something wrong?

Has the update actually downloaded yet or is it asking to download? If it hasn't downloaded yet, let it start downloading, then look at the log.

Its asking to be downloaded. It seems like I don't have the option to just download only and install later, as I want to keep my phone rooted, that is why I am little hesitant to update.....
I see the problem... The update does indeed block root access. There is a method at this site for downgrading a Gingerbread G2 to Froyo to get root back, but it was written for the previous leak, not this official update. I have no idea if it still works.

Thank you, rather not risk it.
Having said that, my apologizes as I misread (or blind) but it seems the update downloaded itself, as after reading properly the update has been downloaded and verified (73.1 MB). Must had downloaded by itself to begin with as I have been pressing "Install later" or back button ever since notification.
Guess its too late now. Maybe that is why nobody has been able to post link as it download itself and I am guessing when we are fast asleep, as i got this update in the morning.
Let me know if I can do anything to help, as I would really love to have rooted gingerbread on G2
I believe the update is stored in the cache partition of the internal storage. If you have ClockworkMod installed, you can boot into recovery and wipe your cache so that the next time you start up, it should hopefully download the update again.
About the rooted GB: I would hold off on installing the update for now. Once the download link becomes available, somebody will make a rooted version of it.
Btw battery improvement is amazing
