As you can see from the image below, I cannot run a nandroid backup in the normal way by rebooting into recovery and scrolling through the menus on the screen. I can, however, run adb shell. Amazingly that thing still works! Problem is, the sdcard went down with the screen. I have another sdcard and I have confirmed it works by doing push/pulls to it. The wifi works, it's still getting txts and emails too. I've rebooted it into recovery using adb reboot recovery. I really need some way to run a nandroid backup.
Please help!

which recovery are you using, maybe someone could walk you through exactly which buttons to press and how many times in order to make the backup?

I'm not sure exactly what the recovery is called, but it is the one found in this thread from toast.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835
connect your phone to your computer, once you can get a ADB shell here is the order of commands you'll need
to flash a recovery image.
Code:
reboot recovery
wait about 30 seconds.
Key press order
Code:
Vol Down x2
Pwr
(now youre in backup menu)
Vol Down
Pwr x2
Wait 3-5 minutes
Nand backup created!
good luck.
Sorry, but story now, please! That thing is WASTED!
Story of how it broke dammit! So we know how to avoid it from happening to us.
UPDATE:
I've solved my problem.
To perform a nandroid backup with a smashed screen......
Code:
adb reboot recovery
adb shell
cd /sbin
nandroid-mobile-sh -b
worked like a charm! The above procedure assumes you have root and a recovery image installed.
Also, nandroid-mobile.sh --help will show a full list of options.
The story:
I was on vacation this weekend down in Ft. Lauderdale. I was sitting in the lobby waiting for my friend (he went to take a dump before we headed out that night). While I'm sitting there, this guy comes into the lobby yelling at me, reaking of booze. His head was the same shade of red as inside the EVO. I have no f'ing idea who he is why he's attacking me. He grabs my phone out of my hands and slams it down on the marble floor. About this time a security guard shows up and says "Is there a problem here?" And I was like are you serious, hell yeah! Cops came and so on.. Now I have no phone due to some anonymous, drunk a-hole.
Thus, there is nothing you can do to prevent this from happening to your EVO. (Unless you are psychic and can tell when a crazed drunk will strike next!)

Thats very unfortunate. sorry to hear you lost your evo in such a ridiculous manner. Im sure you had insurance though, so just a matter of deductable....UNLESS that drunk guy smashed it AND stole it....glad you saved your nan though....i know how important they can be and good luck with your replacement
Yeah, apparently it'll be a few weeks to get it replaced. EVO's are hot and backordered I guess.
If that happened to me, I would have been the one going to jail for murdering a drunk a-hole. I'm usually a pretty laid back guy, but no way I'm going to keep my cool if someone snatched and smashed my evo.
Sorry for your loss..
FYI to anyone afraid of random drunk people, I found out last week that most if not all forms of home owners insurance and renters insurance will allow you to separately insure personal items for a nominal fee.
My wife's hero and my evo are now insured for $50 a year under renters insurance. My friend insured 2 evo's and a hero for $15 for a year. Plus neither have a deductible for personal item insurance. Just the yearly payment.

it's been 24 hours since i used my evo, i'm still having a hard time shaking the feeling. yesterday on my way back from lunch to the office i parked in front to drop some things off, since i had a few things on my front pockets i didn't want to put my phone there, so i figure i'll put it on my back pocket for now. after dropping off the things, i jump back in my truck and i heard a funny sound, all i could do is look up and sigh hoping everything was ok, i pulled out my phone and everything seem fine at the time. when i got back inside my office i woke up my phone and that is when i discover my lcd was crushed and nothing was really visible. since is rooted im not sure if bb's black tie will still cover accidental, cuz im sure as soon as they fire it up they'll know and i'm afraid it will end up been rejected. before i send it off they asked if that was the only thing that was wrong i said yes, he goes on to tell me that will be the only thing they'll be doing and if there is another issue they will have to send it in again. i sure hope that's the only thing they do. if they rejected i found a few places where i can get it for $74.00 or so and i'll replaced my self. hope this goes quick, having to go back to my pre doesn't cease the feeling

you still wouldn't be able to replace that under warranty since it's physical damage. The only way you would get it replaced is through insurance, and insurance doesn't give a **** about rooted or non rooted.

unless they replace the screen, then they won't be able to figure it out. It would require taking it apart even more and checking gpu and ****. And i'm pretty sure they won't take it apart in the store. You'll most likely be fine, unless it gets flagged at their repair center or w/e.

My evo sits in my back pocket all day, every day, I've never had an issue. You must've just sat on it weirdly.
...or you could have just taken a hammer to it until there was not way for them to prove it was rooted. a broken phone is a broken phone.

what shows broken is the lcd passed the touch screen. I jump inside my truck so i guess that cracked it. when is asleep you can't tell there is anything wrong!
Thanks for the mounds of logic.
They cant tell the phone is rooted unless they plugged it in with usb and ran a view commands. Which is extremely rare for anyone to even do and they would just be doing it to be a **** if they did. I HIGHLY doubt they would even try to find out if you rooted it when you accidentally broke the screen. Its not like it was a problem like bluetooth or wifi not working (then rooting it could be the root of the problem). I personally wouldnt worry about it at all.
If it was Sprint you would just pay $100 and they send you a new one, sprint never sees it and all is well. I dont how best buy works.
You are correct there is no replacement cost. I work there as a second job. If it can be repaired they will send it off. If not they replace it with a new one. It is a great plan. The other issue I have no idea how they will handle it but I would not fret over it I believe you will be fine.

Best buy doesn't charge $150 for repair or replacement. They do however change a $150 deposit on loaner phones while yours has been sent out for repair. You get a refund when you return the loaner.

I keep my EVO in my back pocket also, and I've only come close to doing this once. But since I keep it there out of habit, its become second nature to take it out or move it to a front pocket whenever I sit down. I don't even think about it.
I can defiantly see how this could happen to someone who doesn't normally keep it there.
Best of luck op. I'm thinking black tie should cover you ok.

Thought some people here can use a laugh. My girl wanted to bring her epic to the sprint store due to some issues she has had, mainly battery.
We were greated by a woman who had clearly no idea what she was talking about. My girl had ADW launcher installed as her home.
The lady told her the reason for her rapid battery drain was due to that ( from 100% to 50% in three hours of no use.)
I told her in "about phone" then in battery you can clearly see that it used 3% of her battery since the phone was turned on which has been awhile.
Her reply was that app your showing me is unofficial and was downloaded form the market and infact the battery percentage I was showing her also is screwing up her phone.
Also the woman also stated anything off the market is unsupported and should be installed on the phone.

Sounds like my boss at the Sprint store I work at in Leola... According to her you need to turn Gmail off any type of sync time frame at all because even if you have it set to only check every 8 hours it still checks ever .5 seconds and kills your battery in 3 hours. Funny my EVO is set to auto retrieve at all times, I get a day and a half battery regularly...
Sad thing is as a job hunter, i apply at these places and never get a call back from the interview despite these dimwitted folks.
I usually kill time at the SPCS store on 42nd and 6th before i dip into the subway and it takes a lot for me not to interject most times (i find it rude) when i hear some of them explaining stuff to customers that make little to no sense.
I also notice the ones in the mall have mostly female eye-candy staff manning the front. Me i look like Shrek, maybe that's why i never make the cut.

This is not so unexpected. The good news for us is, we go into a situation like this knowing way more than the Store rep in most cases, suggestion is, simply use this to your advantage...when possible. I would assume these guys get little to no training to begin with.

I do, but the app wasn't installed, so it doesn't work :'(
And I tried to install plan b, I read lifehackers post on it awhile ago, but these people were expert thieves, they changed the service to another phone, and tried to make a purchase with it almost immediatly. Luckily, the charge was canceled and I ended service for the phone, then they sent me the new phone I'm currently using.
I would have loved it to work, but alas, sad. My only concern now is if there is a way to deauthorize that phone from my google account. Other than that, as soon as I get around to rooting this thing, I'll be fine.

I broke my screen digitizer a few weeks ago. Luckily I was able to buy one off ebay and replace it myself. The only thing that I did wrong was I didn't really reglue it down to the frame, so dust and dirt has been getting underneath the screen (which you can see behind bright backgrounds). BTW, if anyone breaks theirs, here's a great video on how to take apart the whole phone.

LOLOLOL Well played. Thanks man.
Yeah I scraped my hand and my knee other than that I'm okay thanks to my shifty. <3
lol.. remember this thread? HTC got a kick out of it.
I just struck gold.
So, I recently bought an as is transformer on ebay for about $150. I really wanted the parts from it to repair a TF. When I got it, the first thing I noticed was there was not a scratch on there. The thing looks like new. The serial was a b50. After I charged it, I decided to turn it on and saw that it went right into apx mode.
So, I nvflashed it. OMG, it works! It's working flawlessly. I even restarted it several times to make sure it wasn't in apx bootloop.
Apparently, someone bricked it, thought it was dead, and sold it for parts.
Just thought I'd share
lol congrats bro, thats always good
Nice find.

Damn you made out like a bandit.
So what are you going to do now? Salvage it for parts anyway, use it? Sell it? I'd sell it and get another tablet so I'd have two different tablets. I'd even put that money towards an iPad 2 or an iPad 3 just because I want to try an iPad.
Love those days..

I know. This was just an extreme luck thing. We all here knows that apx mode looks like the thing is bricked. A tablet can go into apx mode automatically if there's something wrong with the bootup. Most people out there don't know what apx is. So, I'm assuming someone thought he couldn't turn this thing on and so went ahead and sold it to some shop which ended up putting this tab on ebay.
Great find!!!
So...... Ill start the bidding for it at $200.

My device has appeared to be bricked a few times, doesn't boot up, connect to PC and its not going into apx mode but tablet is still warm so something is running. had to wait for the battery to completely deplete before it would turn back on with screen working. Only happened with one certain custom ROM though.
Good thing I had patience to wait it out or I could have been that sucker to sell it on e-bay! Congrats.
That's awesome! I used to scour craigslist and ebay for "bricked" devices and 9/10 times they're repairable.
Maybe it was the seller that rated the thread 1 star? haha
it just amazes me that with ALL the info available on the tf1 that they couldn't figure that out. serves em right if ya ask me! congrats my man!
You are a lucky man! Did the person post a picture of the device? It would probably be safe to assume, that if a seller posts pictures of a pretty good looking tablet and selling it for parts, it's more than likely bricked. However, the chance of getting that lucky is probably slim
So I got my phone today and low and behold I have some serious (at least to me) blemishes and scratches on the back. Some pics below. I know they may not seem too bad but come on, this is a brand new phone, and unexceptable if you ask me. So I actually go to my nearby ATT store to see if they have stock already so they can swap it out and they don't have any yet. You could see it in the eyes of the workers that they hadn't seen one yet. Borderline oogling over it.
Anyways, they say call ATT and they'll send me another. I call and low and behold they CAN send me a replacement (not overnight mind you, I'd have to pay for that), but as I had to remind them, there is a backorder for it so they couldn't tell me when I'd get it. All this time I wouldn't be able to activate the phone. I say screw it, I'll keep it but you gotta give me something here. All they can do open a customer credit report and see if it goes through. Suffice it to say.....I'm pissed.

Yeah this is a total case of WTF. Must have happened in the flashing process when they added all their carrier crap.
Wow. Was it shipped in bag full of rocks?
Thats how mine is from GPlay! Not as bad as yours but the same type of marks.... Seems like it was slid around and there was a bunch of dust/debris in the box on the phone.. I called them up right after I saw and they were gonna set me up with a new replacement but there is a problem with there system with that apparently...:roll eyes: So I have to wait for them to fix that then get in contact with me to set up the replacement... Im using this one in a case in the mean time but it definitely shouldn't fly to get one that looks this way!
Looks like someone was skate boarding on it before shipping. Lol I would return it. There is no fu#king way I pay over $700 for a screwed up phone.
Probably happened while they were tattooing that sweetass globe on the bottom. Well worth the sacrifice, IMO.

Hahaha this comment had me rollin as well. Sorry about your phone OP. Hopefully they give you some type of credit or something.
That valiant phone fought tooth and nail and tried to resist being tramp stamped. In the end the handset torturers won

How is that AT&T's fault? Lol.
"A Lenovo company..."
I would try blast them Motorola and ATT on social media. No way you fork over that much cash money for A defectove unit. I also suggest you QC the camera carefully. It may have got the lense.
Motorola QC issue.
I was at my tmobile store when they unboxed their demo unit and it had the same nonsense. We considered that maybe they just purposely sent the ****ty ones to stores for demo purposes. Hope this is not a widespread issue
That's what you get for purchasing a phone from the devil.

They would have touched it last when flashing their splash screenand doing the logo on the back. But a previous commenter said his gplay device was the same. I would look at how the phone fits in the retail packaging. Does it have room to move around at all, is what i would be looking at.

I think it has some room to move because there doesn't seem to be anything keeping it in place or anything protective it has to sit on. Its just sitting on indent of the phone with the documentation. I think it happened during shipping possibly especially if it was man handled it could bounce around and scuff up but idk? i don't see how sliding on cardboard could cause marks like that.
Im also still waiting on Gplay to reply and fix there system to get me a new replacement...
Did you have any issues getting AT&T to initiate the return? This is ridiculous, mine has this too.

AT&T wouldn't have done it themselves, just semantically speaking.
They would have made a deal with the OEM (Motorola) to make the modifications on their behalf before packaging.
Not defending AT&T or anything, of course.
