Ubuntu on X10? - XPERIA X10 General

If anyone cares to try, the instructions are here:
http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile-pulse-pulse-modaco-com/297102/ubuntu-shell-on-pulse-possible-yes-with-possible-lxde-desktop/ for a t-mobile pulse, but it should be the same for ours. I would kind of like a desktop on my phone, also it does require root.

Being a newbie

I have been scouting around the Wiki but there are still a lot of things I do not know. I plan on getting the X1 and modding it but I don't know a lot of the terms and how to do this kind of stuff. Is there any newbie guide which can teach me about all these various terms? Like ROMs and all that. Also is it possible to break your phone with these programs?

Yes, you can "brick" it, as it's called, but there's most often ways to fix even that. It's possible, but unlikely to cause hardware damage.
The best way to learn iss just to look around and read.
So exactly what are ROMs? So to use all the applications in the sticky, the XPERIA itself does not need to be modded or jailbreaked or whatever first right?
a rom == read only memory
== the os/firmware which control
the device kinda like windows or macosx or linux
does on a pc
no a wm device should not be required to be modded to run every
arm based windows mobile program written since 2000
but some may require the wvgafix to run if they can't handle the
res of the x1
For those downloads available on this website. How do I install them? Do I use my XPERIA to log on and install? Or? (Is there an FAQ on this?)

Anyone willing to dev an app like Trip Cubby or Milebug?

Hi all you developers..
I'm desperate for a decent mileage logging app, I've try several out in the market now for PPCs, but they are all designed for the stylus and hunt and peck method.
I have an Omnia i910 touchscreen and want something I can do quickly. I hate to push the iPhone's apps, but they sure kill in some areas, and this is one.
There are 2 mileage apps out there for iPhone - 'Trip Cubby' and 'Milebug'.
http://www.iphoneappreviews.net/2008/10/07/trip-cubby-mileage-log/
http://theapppodcast.com/milebug-mileage-log-iphone-app-review
Is there anyone out there insterested in developing a PPC app to work like these, or is there anyone who could point me to the proper development software that I could do it.
I'm a web programmer in php and javascript so maybe I could figure it out.
Could something like this be done with flash and use flashlite on the PPC?

Looking for a kiosk style ROM, no apps, block on new installs

hi.
i'm wondering if anyone has developed an absolute bare-bones ROM for the HD2. the intended use is for field auditors and the only thing i want them to be able to do is launch their auditing app and use the calendar. the sim will be data only so it won't support calls anyway. it's a single purpose device and they will have a monthly data allowance that i don't want to use up with browsing / personal use etc. i hope to remove (or block) all apps, basically just keep the Today screen and i would deploy my app via Visual Studio / USB. can anyone point me in the right direction? i searched around the HD2 forums for 'kiosk' and 'block' and 'uninstall' but everything i found was feature-rich instead of feature-less.
thanks in advance
How do you plan to restrict app installations on a WM phone ? CleanEx series roms are pretty bare...in any case all ROMs will come with some basic apps which are required for day-to-day functioning
hi, thanks for the reply. i know the phone is designed for everyday usage, so browsers etc are standard issue. and obviously i can never be 100% sure that people won't install an app, but i want to put in whatever measures i can to deter novice users, e.g. removing file manager, Market, etc. it's a business-only single-purpose project and i'd like to customise the device as much as possible for that. am i looking at cooking my own ROM?
cleanex looks like a good start, thanks.

best move forward, PM the cooks.
I am not sure, if this is what you are looking for, but.... couple of years ago I did sold and deployed Kiosk mode from SPBsoftwarehouse. it was 500 licences/installations. it was used on tytnII/kaiser PDA. they used only one application for remote database, even phone, wifi and other functionalities was disabled. it worked like a charm. I dont know, what they added to newer versions of kiosk mode SW, but maybe it will help you. it is not free and for sure not cheap, but it works and it exist test/demo version
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/kioskengine/
EDIT> right now they have three products,
SPB Kiosk Engine
SPB Kiosk Explorer
SPB Kiosk Terminal
thanks for the replies. just in case anyone else is interested, i found a codeproject article that explains some of the challenges.
the SPB software has some reported performance problems but it does have an attractive feature list.

Ubuntu on TF - sort of works

Trying to post to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116471
but can't because I am newbie to this forum ; the rules forbid me even though I am trying to help. So I have to start a new thread ...
Several sites already detail how to get ubuntu working on top of Android
on smart phones eg :-
http://androlinux.com/android-ubuntu-development/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-android/
I have followed the instructions there and ubuntu works on the TF. X11 sort of works but the keymapping need fixing. I will post up detailed instructions when I get a chance including some gotchas to avoid.
Regards
Ken
We are well aware. However, this is hardly Ubuntu on the TF, this is Ubuntu alongside Android. It's a very ****ty, hacky method, and no one wants to use this. The idea is to get it running NATIVELY without a chroot.
Thank you for trying to help, though.

How to use a certain Linux App in OnePlus 8 Pro Oxygen OS (rooted w magisk | edexpose

I've looked around on stack overflow and other places trying to find answers. I have software I want to install on my phone so I can more easily chat, send files, links, etc. on LANs that I work within throughout my day. This program works well for me: https://www.beebeep.net/download
I can use this on my windows and linux boxes. I want to integrate my phones into this communications array.
I'm looking at the snapcraft or any of the other linux variants. I can't figure out how to run a linux app on droid.
I can ssh through the terminal and so on. I can perform other functions that one normally does in BASH though now that I think of it, I haven't tried crontab. Anyway, how could I get this BeeBeep script to work on my android? Can anyone help solve this problem?
I have not seen anything on this, but very interested in this Linux development...
I did see an XDA section for only Ubuntu Touch...
I don't know about direct onto android but apparently it can be done to Chromebooks and I know that android apps can be converted to work on Chromebooks too so perhaps it can be reversed?
https://www.androidcentral.com/how-install-linux-apps-your-chromebook
So basically if an app could be converted to work on a Chromebook could it then be further converted to work on Android?
Seems like a long shot but you never know.
I've seen Windows apps / games work on Android, I've had Wolfenstein, quake arena and doom 3 ports on my phone so I would assume that Linux being a much closer cousin to Android would be an easier chore.
What you need is a framework to do the work for you, not to emulate but to directly port..
Can't find much online but I think if you dig enough you may find something
Certainly interesting though, best of luck pal.
If I find something, I'll post in development. This is a backburner project, but clearly it's one I need to take on myself. Thanx for your responses.
