Hi all you developers..
I'm desperate for a decent mileage logging app, I've try several out in the market now for PPCs, but they are all designed for the stylus and hunt and peck method.
I have an Omnia i910 touchscreen and want something I can do quickly. I hate to push the iPhone's apps, but they sure kill in some areas, and this is one.
There are 2 mileage apps out there for iPhone - 'Trip Cubby' and 'Milebug'.

Is there anyone out there insterested in developing a PPC app to work like these, or is there anyone who could point me to the proper development software that I could do it.
I'm a web programmer in php and javascript so maybe I could figure it out.
Could something like this be done with flash and use flashlite on the PPC?

OK I have looked all over this forum and done a few searches but since I don't know what i am looking for searching really doesn't work.
What I am looking for is software that will allow me to modify a ROM like the XDA dev. 1.2 that can be downloaded, I only want to take out MS messanger and add yahoo.
I am also looking for software based in windows that will allow me to create my own ROMs.
these 2 request might be one in the same and I kinda hope they are.
Also is there any PPC 2003 ROMs or software that will let me mess with it?
I have the XDAtools and pretty much everything else I could find via this site and others.
Granted I might already have the software needed but I am not going to just run the software when I am unsure what it will do, 399 for a PPCPE isn't a thing I want to experiment on when I am not sure I have the write tools.
Well anyway I feel like a major noob, but did look around the best I could for this info. Thanks to anyone with any help on this and hope to become a useful member of this forum.
Have you been here??
www.yorch.net
I was there but really didn't look around or anything but now I will. Thanks.
I have been there and see I will create(cook) a custom ROM but I also will be learning how to hack these things with a PC or Macintosh since I know how to spell Unix and thats as far as I want to get with it. I know everything here is great and the work that everyone has done is also great and I am learning a lot in the short time I have been here and will learn tons more as time goes by. I am one of those people though that can't leave well enough alone and likes to make the OS of my machine have and do what I want. I have "hacked" many versions of windows and the Mac OS and guess with what I learn here and what I know from the computer world will do the same with the pocket PC also.
I would still like some leads though or if someone else has done something like create windows based software for cookin roms that would be cool to learn about or get too.
email me when you figure out how to change the boot image on xda1, and maybe modify (add/remove) programs from rom. that will come in handy after hard resets.
the folks of this website have apparently given up on us. too busy playing with xda2 and drinking beers (look above).
by the way... yahoo dont work on pocket pc no more! they stoped THAT particular server at yahoo... i can log-on yahoo, but via other client programs, but not the yahoo for ppc.
keep in touch.
ps: love your show "mcgyver"
i use iMov...u can use ur exsisting yahoo, AIm, msn, icq, sms messeging accounts on it, works fine, even tells me wen ive received emails
but since ur McGyver.....im sure all u need is a roll if used up toliet paper, 2 paper clips, toothpaste, and aluminum foil, an im sure can do anything
Well I currently don't own the Pocket PC Phone Edition as of yet, I will be getting it ASAP, looking for the best deal right now. Email me at [email protected] and I will tell you what I can and can't do with these things once I get my hands on it and mess around with it. I have also got a small collection of software already for it. I plan ahead. As for the yahoo server no longer being there thats very intresting and I will look into it and see what can and can't be done about it.
I got the idea to make a application finder software for Windows Mobile. Specially designed to HTC Diamond, with many G-apps & games and other nice apps. It's under development now, and i will release one screenshot for you.
This app will not be just an styled IE-frame, like many "appstore" like apps that have been released before.
19. October 2008:
New Screenshot of the start screen.
Development stopped, becouse of the Gecko project.
I think this is a phenominal idea. The idea that went around recently was an internet based solution through ie explorer and it just was not device friendly. To have a device based solution is much more sensable. If you could create a server that developers could upload their most recent programs too that would be the best.
Maybe contact the system admin on this site and see if he will give your program to access the sites FTP server or something. Then a user could use your device based program that would seemlessly connect to the interenet in the back ground, poll the server for software, sort it and place it into a thumb friendly interface on the phone by which it could be sorted into categories of games, utilities, themes, programs etc etc....
Of course the admin would have to create those categories on the site's side and the developers would need to upload their program to the correct one but I think everyone has been in such a need for this that they would be willing to do it without much arm twisting.
Or, you could create device user interface that interacts with Orb.com... But then you would have to get the updates of programs and upload them to ORB for your program to work. But ORB does already have a sorting feature that your user controls on the device could be made to access for sorting etc. It even has a video section that a user could download tutorials of different programs that someone took time to make.
All just ideas. Some you may find good or not. I am excited to see a device based program though. It make user intereaction easier.
Curious G.
yes
Its a good idea, keep working on it
seems to be a nice idea
I like the idea but this really depends on what will be offered / how updated the actual site behind the store application is. Have you had any thoughts on that yet?
i second that.
at this time i browse via opera tho xda to download stuff... but having a app that simplifies things would be even better...
maybe all the downloads here could be managed and put upto "youre" server in an automated way..
I remember seeing this article a few weeks ago about Microsoft creating their own app store.
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/n.../job-advert-reveals-microsoft-skymarket.phtml
Either way, it's certainly a good idea!!
I forward the notion. An app that has all the apps at hand for easy download by category would kick some serious asss..
If I can help in any way let me know.
Greetings to all.
Love this development. Maybe this progress will open up eyes on new skilful programmers and we will see an increase of good looking apps and games. Not that I don't just love the things going on here at xda. But the more the merrier, right? The only complaint that I might have on this forum is the all the threads with wallpapers and especially the ones with half-naked women...But that's me...
So an app store (or two) is going to make it easier for us to sort out what we are interested in and only that.
If needed count me in I can help develop..
Great idea.
In the spirit of AppToDate, which I found worked very very well. But with YouTube-app like interface, all connected to database were latest apps can get installed.
Great idea!
I'm working to figure out how to connect to MySQL from a windows mobile based device, does anyone here know?
double post****
i think if these two threads could be incorporated
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428480
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433913
that would be a good way to do storage
each developer could use have there own account and then whenever they updated there app they update the wapps link via web or give it like some type of flash capabilities that would be really great
or there could be a generic account that ever one uses to upload too
looks like this is in the works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436127
maybe some collabo might be nice
Nice project!! GoOd Luck!!
If there was a way to advertise this app when it gets made. the diamond would sell millions
Why not just modify a RSS feed reader?

Maybe Sqlite is more accurate for a mobile device ?
And you just download the sqlite file available on a server, this way requests would be very fast.

Yes, every time you start it will update from the web or you can click on a button to update (or an 'update every x minutes' function
please keep up the hard work!!!!! love to see this appstore happen!
Will anyone on xda developers try to port a solid version of Android to the PPC6800 (Mogul)? Or is that impossible due to the Mogul being "locked" to Windows Mobile.
I have the vogue version working on the Mogul, and parts of it run 10000x better than Windows Moble junk, but there are parts of it that do not work at all (will not go into landscape mode as an example).
I can not program my way out of a wet paper bag or I would do this myself, but I can be a test monkey and provide crash logs. I know a little about about linux, so I am familiar to the command line for linux.
The titan is getting old, and therefore not as many people are developing for it. There are only a few people that were programming for it (ROMs, etc.), and think most of them have moved on to other phones. We might not ever see android on the titan unless a build for another device happens to work. Or an enterprising person with some free time might come along and take up the challenge...who knows.
This is something I would love to have for my Mogul. Maybe the programmers won't forget about their titan friends?

We've all been spoiled by DCD...a new ROM every couple hours, lol...We're going to have to go thru withdrawl here once he stops. I sure hope DCD gets a Raphael (Touch Pro), and does ROMS for it.
I've always been windows mobile user ever since i could remember, now faced with a possibility of getting g1 i was wondering(pehaprs a stuped question-but new to g1) if there is a ROM or a hack of some sort to completely replace android with windows mobile 6.1? G1 seems to be very nice hardware-wise but from what i read android is not for me, i use word daily, got used to opera browsing and so on
it may not be for you...
there is no real app that compares with word, simple text editors so far but nuthin like word, we do have an opera mini browser port that seems nice I haven't played to much with it, ATM android isn't business ready IMOP, that said it wont be long before there will be super high power office type apps, as well as kick arse video games, or whatever the beauty of open source to me is this, Ive found if I want to to "ACTION A" with my open source platform "OSP 1" somebody else has an OSP1 and also wants to be able to complete ACTION A, and he or somebody else that can write code and has the same wants as the other OSP1 users and he make a way to do it...
this has yet to ever fail me inside the confines of what we call open source.
but there have been alot of tasks I wanted to do on my CLOSED SOURCE PLATFORM, CSP (aka, winblows) and never found a way to get it done despite finding other user who wanted to do the same task.
MS has SO FAR has had a pretty loose attitude as far as the WM products go, the fact that this place still exists is almost amazing, compared to the same type of site for say...XP so the WM does have some of the same I need it, so does he, so somebody will write an app, kinda thing but they used to let the site host roms (i dont think this is allowed here anymore, still) So it may change....
To wrap up my cafe & canabanoid induced ramble, the G1 may not be ready for ya yet but it will be in time, maybe hold on to your phone you have now and get the g1 when it has all the apps you need to function.
Or stick with win mobile Its not bad I used it on my WIZ for years and had alot of fun with different roms and such, but once you go G1 you never go back.
But no as of now there is not a WM port for the G1(I think I just puked in my mouth a little bit as I typed that)
bhang
Please refer to this link, for further ciscussion on windows Mobile on a G1.
Thank you,
Thread will be closed
hi.
i'm wondering if anyone has developed an absolute bare-bones ROM for the HD2. the intended use is for field auditors and the only thing i want them to be able to do is launch their auditing app and use the calendar. the sim will be data only so it won't support calls anyway. it's a single purpose device and they will have a monthly data allowance that i don't want to use up with browsing / personal use etc. i hope to remove (or block) all apps, basically just keep the Today screen and i would deploy my app via Visual Studio / USB. can anyone point me in the right direction? i searched around the HD2 forums for 'kiosk' and 'block' and 'uninstall' but everything i found was feature-rich instead of feature-less.
thanks in advance
How do you plan to restrict app installations on a WM phone ? CleanEx series roms are pretty bare...in any case all ROMs will come with some basic apps which are required for day-to-day functioning
hi, thanks for the reply. i know the phone is designed for everyday usage, so browsers etc are standard issue. and obviously i can never be 100% sure that people won't install an app, but i want to put in whatever measures i can to deter novice users, e.g. removing file manager, Market, etc. it's a business-only single-purpose project and i'd like to customise the device as much as possible for that. am i looking at cooking my own ROM?
cleanex looks like a good start, thanks.

best move forward, PM the cooks.
I am not sure, if this is what you are looking for, but.... couple of years ago I did sold and deployed Kiosk mode from SPBsoftwarehouse. it was 500 licences/installations. it was used on tytnII/kaiser PDA. they used only one application for remote database, even phone, wifi and other functionalities was disabled. it worked like a charm. I dont know, what they added to newer versions of kiosk mode SW, but maybe it will help you. it is not free and for sure not cheap, but it works and it exist test/demo version
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/kioskengine/
EDIT> right now they have three products,
SPB Kiosk Engine
SPB Kiosk Explorer
SPB Kiosk Terminal
thanks for the replies. just in case anyone else is interested, i found a codeproject article that explains some of the challenges.
the SPB software has some reported performance problems but it does have an attractive feature list.
