I tried an old Nokia 3.5mm composite video/stereo lead and it worked well....ish, it's composite after all.
in what aspect? was the image shakey?
if it does not do it well i will get the iphone. thanks for replying btw :-D

Not shaky, just the usual 'poor' quality composite image, nothing wrong with the 'phone.
The aspect is based on how you use the phone. If you hold it vertically, it will have a weird portrait resolution.
If you hold it landscape, it looks perfect on a widescreen TV.
I'm going to have a full Galaxy S Review up hopefully tonight, I document the feature.
I'm using some old Nokia TV Out cables at home, composite picture quality, but works just fine (no jitters or anything).
Definitely a welcome feature for me!
Why do you need to use some old cables?
Isn't there one provided in the box?

Because it isn't the recommended external video output. Obviously with the SGS being a HD phone outputting to composite isn't exactly going to be the best way of demonstrating the video features, hence the preferred DLNA option.
How is the DLNA feature?
Have any of you tried the DLNA feature with say a PS3 or XBOX? how does it work? is it smooth?

How does video out work on the Galaxy Tab? Basically, I'm torn between the Xoom and the Tab 10.1. I'm leaning towards the Tab due to the video format support.
I understand the 10.1 isn't out yet, but I'm assuming the video out will work similarly since the new Tab will still not have HDMI out.
What connector would I need to connect my Tab's output to my TV? Would there be a way of getting audio and video out to HDMI through an adapter? Or would I need to use the headphone jack as well?
Thanks.

The 7" Tab has analog video out via cable, and digital video out via an HDMI port on the multimedia dock - I'd imagine the larger Tabs would be about the same.
I bought an HTC Media Link today, ostensibly for my Desire HD, but I checked that it does work with the Tab, so that is likely another option on the larger Tabs.

Dave
The part I hate the most about docking is u can't watch movie that u rent from mediahub tru your big screen. It is not allowed thanks to drm
Streaming using dlna is good enough so u might skip buying anything

No, HTC Media Link is DLNA client that plugs into your TV.

Oh, . . . Thank you.
Hey guys..
Here is a Demo video of MHL TV-Out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFG4S7g0_Ls (Credits to GSMArena)
Some additional info here too: http://blog.gsmarena.com/watch-sams...o-hdtv-through-its-mhl-port-video/#more-13930
Turns out its a sucess in my opinion. The only thing is that the cable is not included.
I want to know if u guys are getting one and on which website/prices.
Definitely getting one but most sites like Expansys, Clove etc say early June for getting stock.
Is the output signal upscaled?

I thought the Lady Gaga video at the beginning was 1080p...
It was, or at least its file name indicated that (they should have brought up the media details while it was playing to show that).
I was quite tickled to have beaten them to demo'ing USB OTG!
(I wonder if they are the one person to dislike my video so far?!)
Shame it only works when the power is connected
Kinda removes alot of the wow factor when you have to plug in all the cables to make it work.
We need a power cable ?
So stupid, is it confirmed ? No way to use MHL without power ?

I htink you can if the TV supports that, otherwise you need to power the sucker up.
I think video output is limited to 800x480 regardless of video source because it's display mirroring, it does not switch off the lcd when playing video. That's my opinion.

You only need the power cable if you want to charge the phone while it's connected. The HDMI output will work regardless.

Are you sure about this?
Would be very bad..
If it was so, we can't experience full HD movies?! or it just rearranges screen after playback the movie?
Would like to know that..
According to the article, the display won't work without being plugged in:
It took us a few minute to get the thing going – it turns out, the adapter won’t work unless you connect a charger too. After that, the content on the screen is automatically mirrored on the HDTV.

I'm completely confused!
Are we saying that if you want to connect the phone to a tv in order to play a video, you MUST have either (a) an MHL-capable tv or (b) the charger also plugged in?
If so, that's completely ridiculous. Who the hell wants to carry their charger all the time?
If only someone could confirm this. Except none of us have the damn cable!
I'm seriously reconsidering this phone. What with the complaints about the audio, the complaints about the GPS, and now this.

In the MHL consortium video from MWC it shows the display on the phone turning off on video playback (with onscreen media controls showing). For video I am quite sure its output is 1080p (Samsung have an official walkthrough video on youtube today which specifically states this also).
Yeah, I think It's 1080p too. What tv does even support 800x480 resolution? Ofcourse its upscaled somehow. And what idea would it be to support playing full hd if you can't see that its hd?

Personally I'd rather have the option for both, but having to require the charger being plugged in seems to be the lesser of two evils. At least this way you can have the phone continually on if you're using it for extended periods of time on a large screen.

Has anyone tried whether you get TV Out using the 3.5mm jack? I know the quality wont be as good but just want to know.
Tv out plus Sky Go
This works perfect i use it to watch sky go on my tv my parents have sky tv so i put sky go on my phone and plug it in and away i go. No subs for me lol its just a pain when people try to ring or i get a text.
Probably a noob question, but i dont know so i thought id ask.
Do we have any way at all to output the Xperia Play picture to a TV yet?
Would be great to plug it into the TV while i am in bed and control iplayer and youtube and play some games etc.
the only 2 things that ive seen is
1. theres a new prototype play with a hdmi out on it and there is a video on youtube of someone using it.
2. ive seen a S.E docking station thats coming out that has a hdmi output
on it but its unclear if this adds hdmi to our plays, or just for the new plays that have hdmi out on already?

Man, better not to answer if you don't know something well. That can confuse a lot of people.
1- The prototype you talk about it's just the device that the developers buy to make games for the Xperia Play and test them.
2- The LiveDock Multimedia Station (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImnhFtmyHNA) uses the USB port of some Xperia phones and outputs the image through the HDMI output that the dock has. The bad new is that the Xperia Play is not one of the compatible phones, although it has USB port.
And if there would be that new Xperia Play with HDMI output, why the heck would you need this dock if the mobile already would have HDMI output???
Someone said you can use a micro
Hdmi cable to connect it why not try? ;P

I have a feeling they may release a USB - HDMI adapter for the Xperia Play but will also need software on the phone like Bravia Sync to allow for the phone display to be pushed to HDTV.

That will be awesome (if SE decide to go with this idea).
Where do I have to sign to get one ?
I just want to be able to connect my first smartphone (the PLAY) with my 55" LED screen ... even my former, former, former dumb phone (Samsung D900) was capable of it... after that the replacements a Samsung F480 and a Samsung S8000 (the famous "Jet") weren't able.
anyway... I'm loving the Play... just hope SE don't leave us unsupported.
I bought an HDMI cable today so I can put Netflix onto my TV. I have an older HDTV, from 2004. It's a Panasonic model number pt-47x54j. When I plug my tablet into it, the little Android dude pops up onto the TV and and says 720p? I checked the owners manual and it says that the TV is only capable of 1080i, or 480p and 480i. I plugged my tablet into a more modern HDTV and it works just fine. Crystal Clear. Is there any way that I can get my a500 to work on my Panasonic TV? Attached is a screenshot of my TV's owner's manual on the page where it talks about HDMI inputs. Thanks in advance...
From the best of my knowledge you can't change this.Athens beat solution I could offer is Logitech Google TV.it rocks.and 70.00 amazon.
It can't be changed without hacking the drivers -- and even then micro HDMI is only capable of 720p output. All you can do is use a different TV or an adaptor (probably cheapest, but may lower video quality).

Thanks. At this point, I'm just using my tablet to watch the movies on. That's good enough for me. Once my TVs start breaking and/or if I get this dream job that I'm currently chasing after, I'm going to get a more modern TV and all of my HDMI cable worries will go away. I put the Netflix App on my phone too. My 3 year old freaking loves it!! He is always asking for my phone to watch cartoons on. It's hilarious. haha
Of course, I'm still going to try to figure this crap out with my current TV. That's the fun part.

micro HDMI itself is capable of 1080p, but the tablet will only output 1080p if there's a 1080p stream (such as a 1080p movie). Netflix will not do 1080p, though.
Is this going to work with the S4? I saw a "Screen Mirroring" option on settings but I'm not sure if it's the same thing as Allshare Cast. Did Samsung change the name or is this a completely different feature?

any news on this?, i also have the dongle and might ne upgrading to the S4 soon.
Tested last night and works fine!
In fact with my rooted S4 it even works without having to use "Triangle Away" whereas on my S3 it would just bomb out.
But still only at 720p!
EDIT: and yes it is now called "Screen Mirroring"

It does output in 1080p for Galaxy S4. The resolution will be the same of the phone resolution.
If I were to use the dongle with my Galaxy S2 it would output to 480p on the TV.

i did wonder when he said "the galaxy S2...." - the Galaxy S2 doesnt have widi and so no allsharecast. I'm going to log a call with samsung to find out why they are miss selling this, it appears to have no 1080p connectivity at all.
Here is my video showing Allshare cast on S4
Two questions
1.Does this feature work with the mobile connected directly to the WIFI network(Got a 2012 E8000 TV)? I bought an S4,and I`waiting for it to ship, but I didnt see anything about this dongle being sold with the phone.
2.Does this app allow for the screen mirror to go the opposite direction. Ie I want what the TV is showing, to be sent to the phone. Being in the kitche, or while taking a dump

I know the S2 doesn't have miracast support, that's why I said: "if I WERE to use it on my S2".
Regarding 1080p in this video the guy said it was outputting in Full HD on his TV, so I don't know for sure what's happening.

Are you referring to the wireless dongle? If so then, from memory, it does not matter what you set the output to in the video app the cast will still only output at 720p unless things have changed.

With you there! But even the 3S outputs at 1080p with the wired dongle so it is capable of doing it, just perhaps not over the air.
Hello there...
I bought the allshare cast hub a few days ago. The connection between the my Galaxy S4 and the hub works well, but it's a bit laggy. Now I've found an APP (AllShare Cast Hub APP), which allows to update the firmware from LF21 to LJ01. The problem is that this APP doesn't work with the Galaxy S4. It seems that it's only available for the S3.
How can I update the firmware without a S3?
Thanks...
