Yellow over here, yellow over there - EVO 4G General

When I first got my Evo, I noticed that there were yellow bars that could be seen on any white screen. I wasn't sure if it was an Evo issue or just a my Evo issue. Then after seeing dead pixels I knew I'd be exchanging my Evo so I stopped trying to figure out the yellow bars.
So today I've been reading about the iPhone 4 and some of the issues it is having (no really, there are sites willing to post bad news about Apple; Gizmodo users). So I see that the iPhone 4 (for some owners) has the exact same looking, annoying problem I have on my Evo.
Without getting into all the other iPhone issues; it's safe to say that the Evo is looking more and more like the phone for me to keep but I guess I'll still try the iPhone tomorrow. And then there is the Galaxy S which T-Mobile will release on July 21st, only they've removed the front camera = bad move. But they did give it for touch buttons just like the Evo = good job.
Even though the screen issues of my Evo really rubbed me the wrong way, I can't get over the fact that a large screen (4" to 4.5") is just perfect for me and my needs.
Why on earth can't a single smartphone have the best of all the tops phones?!?!?!

white evo 004 hboot 2.10 fw3.70 novatek screen!!!

Just got my brand new evo 4g 2 hrs ago its a white 004 w hboot2.10 de 3.70 out of the box screen looked like purple,so I checked via terminal emu, dmesg and guess what its a novatek screen not epson,I thought these where pong gone w 002/ and some 003 but these is a brand new one....should I keep or exchange so I can try to get an Epson..my friend is a best buy mobile employee he will swap it ,but is it worth swapping?
Are you dissatisfied with the screen? If its not bothering you, then exchanging for a different one seems like a waste of time.
My current evo is an epson, my first two were novateks. The epson sucks.

Care to add some more info as to why epson sucks so much?
It is incredibly washed out compared to both of the novas. The whites are kind of yellow, and the blacks aren't nearly as deep. It is a lot duller all across the spectrum. Also, for some reason it seems that the dithering is more noticeable on the epson, though that could just be me being nitpicky. When I first got it, as soon as I turned it on my heart sank and I was extremely disappointed. Side by side with the nova it looked like a joke. I have gotten used to it now but man I miss my last one. Also, neither of my novas had the purple problem, both had a nice deep black to them.
It's all a matter of personal preference.
Let me give my own personal experience with BOTH screens...
I have owned both novatech and epson equipped EVO's. Here's my opinion on the matter. First things first, OP keep your 0004 novatech EVO! It's very rare and a very good combo to have.
My experience is this: My very first brand new EVO was a 0003 with a Novatech. I never thought anything was wrong with it's screen whatsoever and my wife's EVO is exactly the same with a novatech. Last month I had to do a warranty exchange due to constant random reboots and my replacement was a brand new 0004 EVO in the original tv dinner box. As soon as I booted it up for the first time in the store I noticed right away the screen just didn't look right so I fired up my first EVO and put them side by side. To my suprise the difference is VERY noticable.
My first impressions and complaint about the new screen was that it looked "dull" and less vibrant. Also the whites where not as bright. I was hesitant at first to leave the store with the new EVO because I didn't think I was going to be able to get used to the "dull" whites on the new phone. But I had no choice because my original EVO had terrible reboots and was beyond usable.
So once I got home and used the new epson 0004 EVO, I slowly got used to it and was perfectly fine with it. After using the new phone for a couple of days it actually seemed normal and at that time I got my wife's 0003 Novetech EVO and compared them side by side. Right away I saw that her EVO had a pinkish/purplish tint to it compared to my new EVO, especially when viewing it at an angle or from across the table. After comparing them for a few minutes I quickly realized that my new epson screen actually had more accurate colors than my wife's novatech. So I shrugged it off and used my epson for several weeks with no complaints or concerns about the differences. I can honestly say that it's all a matter of user preference and neither screen is better or worse in the grand scheme of things.
But just a few days ago I had to exchange my epson EVO again due to technical problems and a bad antenna. Low and behold when I went to the Sprint store to pick up my new EVO it was another 0003 novatech. I knew immediately when I booted it up because I'm very familiar with both screens now. I was hesitant at first to accept the new novatech phone but quicky came to the reality that it is just as good as the epson and I remembered it has a brighter screen with brighter whites which is fine by me. The pinkish'purplish tint is not noticable once you take the phone and start using it. It's only noticable if you put both novatech and epson side by side. You will quickly adapt to either screen just fine. ...The same way you get used to other peoples LCD TV's with slightly different color temps. It's no different, trust me. I'm VERY picky and if I can adapt then so can anybody else.
The only other significant differece between the two screens is the way they change brightness levels and the dimming. The novatech has a very smooth transission when adjusting screen brightness while the epson screen uses step by step increments. Also the epson screen does not have a gradual dim when the screen goes to sleep, it is instant on and instant off. Personally I prefer the novatech's gradual smooth screen dimming and brightness adjustment over the epson. To some of you it may not matter, to others it might be the big deciding factor. Both screens work fine and I will settle for either one if I ever have to do another warranty exchange or insurance replacement.
I hope my opinions on this was helpful for those of you still wondering which screen is best suited for you.
EDIT: you can adjust the color temperatures of both screens by flashing "calibrated-signed-42-Universal.zip" and then installing the .apk called "Calibrator-5.1-Universal.apk. Just such here in the EVO forums, I think it's in the general thread. Works most excellent on my novatech!
How could I check which screen my evo has? I know its a 0004 for sure I got it after Xmas.

Well I just wanted to know if there's was a difference on performance and display I just realized my WiFi won't connect stays on obtaining up address but never connects...
I think tx_dbs_tx sums it up nicely, I have a novatech but know a couple of people with epsons and it's really just preference. You can always adjust the colors if it looks too purple for you.

HTC Amaze or Samsung GSII

Sensation if and when my carrier stock it cos Samsung software is worse than HTC's
HTC Sensation XE most likely.
Saw both in store today.
The GS2 is significantly lighter than the Amaze. In that department, it's definitely easier to hold and use for longer periods.
The Amaze has the better camera hands down. It's not just the software, the optics is larger than the GS2.
I played with both in the store for about 20 minutes. I was literally torn.
I noticed with the GS2, that there would still be the occasional stutter. Do the "zoom out" function in the homescreen by using two finger pinch. When the cards are being displayed, you'll see the stutter. The GS2 screen is definitely very colorful, but I noticed some banding on the wallpaper. I'm not sure if this is due to the image, or due to the drivers, or due to the limitations of Android's color system. I didn't see this with the Amaze 4G. It might be the case that LCD hides these bandings better whereas the Super Amoled Plus screens just makes it more prominent.
The GS2 is not usable with a single hand. It is unlikely that the majority of users in the population will be able to reach the corner farthest away from their thumb comfortably without the phone slipping at some point or the other. This is something to keep in mind.
Lastly, know that the GS2's screen technology might have some issues. A family member of mine had the european GS2. Within 2 months there was a "burn-in" (Or rather, fading of a single LED color) due to always leaving a static image of the same color on the screen for prolonged periods. I don't know if they've resolved this in the T-Mobile version. I was just surprised that something like that happened on the European version within 2 months of use. Maybe in this regard, it might be wiser to go with the tried-and-true tested LCD tech.
Just my thoughts. I'm personally very impressed with the Amaze's camera (the Amaze's version of the panaromic shot vs the GS2's panaromic shot is not even a contest as the Amaze wins hands down) and the machined design of the phone. However, the lightness and color pop of the GS2 was also very appealing.
Right now, I can't make up a choice between the two so I'm probably just going to pass on them and wait on the Nexus Prime. I hate to pick a phone when I have two almost identical competing choices as I would have buyer's remorse. Lawl.
Good luck to all of you who pick one or the other. I just can't see anyone going too wrong with either.

Anyone in Jacksonville Fl with a Note?

Hi guys, I am itching to buy a note even though I am with Sprint and would nver switch to ATT. I keep convincng myself to wait but, just not sure this kind of screen realestate will surface in a phone again. I have read just about every forum and review in the past several weeks- at least twice...lol.... The only thing that is holding me up is warranty concerns and the pen tile screen. I have been bothered by every pentile screen I have seen and can clearly see pixels when others claims that you would never see them with normal use or that they don't not exist. I would love to see one in person to aid my buying decision. I am not at all concerned about the size, only the screen as I tend to watch movies, read ebooks, and surf the web more than anything? Please let me know, thanks.

Like you I use mines for the same thing books, netflix and wed.
I look passed the pixels thing and just took the plunge and bought the Note
been happy and no complaints.
I see people talking about volume issues, screen issues, screen lock issues the only issue I had was the size. it's too small for my liking and that's cause Im coming from the Tad 7'' used as cell phone for 1 year.
like Nike just do it. lol

This is my very first Android device, and I have to say that I am very happy with it. I highly recommend this phone. Once you get this screen you'll never back to anything smaller.

Im in Tallahassee Florida with my 24hr old galaxy note. I guess im no expert at screens but this screen is beautiful. Ive had the Tmobile Vibrant and recently just sold my release day international sgs2. The screen is not as bright as my sgs2 but its still top notch. Its crystal clear. You will NOT regret your decision.
Yesturday at work, I watch all my coworkers jaws drop at this device. Most have Moto Razr, iphone4s, streak, incredible s2, and some other new android devices.
Seems like samsung devices are subject to witch hunts, if you look hard enough your bound to find something. I can say with certainty, that I will not have another device until Galaxy Note 2 is out. Mind you Ive had every highend device thats been released in the last 2 years.

I truly don't understand the fuss over the iphone screen. I was without a phone for a couple of hours yesterday and used my coworkers iphone. I had to zoom in on every page unlike my sgs2, infuse and now note. If you were watching me using the phone, you would have thought I was blind trying to navigate ebay, xda, fedex, usps and a few other sites.
Not going to go into long detail but all in all I liked the tmo vibrants screen better than the iphones. Sgs2 and note in my opionion blows other devices out of the water.
Im no sales man or speaker for samsung, but I couldnt imagine using anything other then amoled displays. I went a total 4 weeks without my sgs2, and in between I had a atrix and htc inspire. They both were sold the moment I found a buyer.

Thanks for the feedback. Thats exactly my point. I hated the vibrant's screen because the text looks like Lego blocks. I have a Sprint GS2 and the resolution just isn't good? enough as the text could look jagged and blurry sometimes. I would match prefer the sharp and solid - e ink type of resolution/text on say an IPhone 4 rather than the sometimes oversatuarated color on the Samsungs. That's why I ask about the IPhone 4 screen, not so much for color or contrast but for the sharpness of text sine I read alot; trust me I would never buy an IPhone with a baby screen size from three years ago. The HTC Rezound is the only screen I have seen thus far that can match an Iphone 4 in this regard but that screen size at 4.3 has now become too small for my taste...lol...

Samsung Galaxy III Deal Breaker Question

For those who have the Samsung Galaxy III or planning to pick one up when it comes out, what is one CON about the SG3 that would make you NOT want to buy the GS3 or return it to the stores and wait or exchange for a different phone?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Had it just over 2 days now, can't can't really find anything that would make me not want to buy it. If anything, and can be argued, the strength of the screen. Though again, I still bought it, so no real cons from me.
I think my only real concern would be future updates. But that's about it for me.

Strength of the screen? Huh?
It looks like a piece of jewelry the glass of the screen. Kinda like One X international or ATT.
I'm actually surprised but this samoled HD is actually better than the one GN in terms of pixelation (less pixelation here). But there's a noticeable black color contrast issue compared to, say, Epic Touch black contrast - the blacks were completely black on ET, whereas with this screen, they aren't quite as black.

What is strength of screen?
Its all about personal taste and the phone you are planning to replace. If your current phone is better than the GS3, then stick with it.
I don't have mine yet but the deal breaker for me is the email client ..see how well it works with exchange server and the user experience. Not sure I like black background and white text in the email client either? I am a heavy corporate mail user...
I'm only issue is not having lte in my area yet but hopefully it won't be long
after using it for the past 3 days, the only gripe I have is how fragile it feels. I couldnt see this thing functioning properly after a few falls of 3 ft or more

I had a hard time choosing this phone over the EVO LTE. I picked it because I thought it would have better developer support than the EVO LTE since I saw a lot of OG EVO devs jump ship to SGSIII.
However, the screen is much dimmer than the EVO's. It was way harder to see in sunlight compared to the EVO. It also feels a bit more slippery and fragile, and lacks HD Voice and a kickstand compared to EVO LTE. Still, it is a very top notch phone.
No deal breaker for Me
I love this thing .
Fast great Battery and Sammy dropped the source.

Hopefully mine gets shipped this week (order the 32GB), but my biggest concerns at this point are: camera quality, screen pixelation, Wi-Fi/data/voice signal strength. The last one is my biggest concern- I've never had an Android Samsung phone that has performed well in this area from the Moment--> Epic --> NS4G, they've all had very poor reception. If the GS3 is plagued with this same issue I will swap it for the EVOLTE or await a new phone purchase until the fall/winter.
This phone is no more fragile than the S2 was. Put it in some kind of case (TPU for me) and you're fine.
E-Mail client works excellent with Exchange. I get 20-50 emails a day and have had no problem, Setup was a breeze.
Reception on this phone is identical to the dbm levels I had on the EVO LTE. WIFI is far superior as it actually connects and doesn't hang up all the time when loading. GPS is nearly instantaneous, even indoors.
As far as the screen goes...the EVO at max was way to bright for my eyes, even in bright daylight. For me anyway, the S3 screen turned up is just right outdoors....course I don't purposely try and stand in screaming bright daylight just to try it out and worry myself over it. There is no pixelation I can see, unlike the Motorola Pentile screens which drove me nuts.
I far prefer the colors and contrast of the S3 screen to that of the EVO. I honestly see know signs of the dreaded Pentile effects and even reading text on the internet it is sharp as can be. By the way...reading text for my eyes is much easier on this phone as the text is darker due to the black levels vs the grayish text on the EVO LTE.
This shape phone fits my hands perfetly whereas the EVO with the full rectangle and square corners was a bit to industrial and not comfortable in my hand.
Lastly, if the "plastic / polycarbonate" body of the S2 with a TPU on it was any indication of the resiliency of this phone considering the number of times I dropped the S2, I haven't even the slightest worry unless it falls glass down on a rock. If you drop any of these and it lands on the corner without some kind of shock absorbing case, you are pretty much screwed.
the only thing really bugging me is that Sprint's 3G is impossibly slow. my Galaxy S II was a great phone and still had WiMax.
by the time Sprint rolls out LTE in the LA area (end of the year at the earliest) there will likely be a newer, better phone.
the SGS III is AMAZING! screen is beautiful, it feels great in the hand, it is FAST and on WiFi is a phone I wouldn't trade for anything out there. the problem comes when you are not within range of wifi.
that's not this phones fault and is not a defect of the phone just unfortunate timing that I will have to wait about 6 months to use it on a high speed mobile network.
WiMax is no where near as fast as LTE but it is way way faster than Sprints 3G.
I have 28 more days to decide how much this bugs me and how likely it is that there will be a better Android phone available when Sprint finally flips the switch on LTE.

Unfortunately this isn't necessarily an indication of improvement on Samsung's part because the HTC One X series has been reported to have low quality/weak reception. The Samsung radios didn't improve to be as good as those in HTC but quite the opposite, HTC's are now as bad as Samsung's. This would be the reason that I would not get the EVOLTE instead and would rather wait til fall/winter. Bottom line though, if it proves to be a non-issue then I will keep the phone.

Signal strength seems to be passable, but there is definitely pixelation on the screen. You don't even need good eyesight to notice it on white pages. It's a little jarring for me compared to the EVO LTE's screen but it's not a dealbreaker.
GPS was also my biggest gripe with Samsung, being that me & wife road trip a lot. The GPS is outstanding for me on the GS3. I couldn't be happier.

As always, an honest review.
Makes me more excited for my delivery, although it is one day past my ship date and I have no confirmation.
Blue hue, won't bother me at all.
Muted colors. I believe google will provide some options with a software update at some point, but I've already seen the phone at Verizon and the colors didn't bother me at all.
Otherwise, the phone will definitely be the best I've ever had.

I worry sometimes that MKBHD is too much of an android fanboy & then a review comes out like this & I don't care anymore. LOL!
Seriously, I've watched him since he was a teenager & I believe what he says.
I don't know what to think anymore. Some say this phone is a turd. Others, like MKBHD, praise it. Guess I'm glad I didn't cancel my order and I can find out for myself. Mine is on a truck for delivery - three full days ahead of schedule. So that's good. Although I'm not sure why I'm getting my 128gb black version ahead of people who ordered a full day before me, but that's Google's terrible shipping for you.
I'm going to honestly say that all this news on the Pixel 2XL feels like a smear campaign or something. I swear, I wasn't seeing as many news stories as when Samsung had phones exploding and they were refusing to let them on planes. Why is something that is largely subjective as screen preference, dotted with a few actual hardware defects being plastered everywhere on the internet. I seriously can't scroll one or two screens, in Google, Newstand, Google+, Facebook, etc without seeing something about the damn screen.
b ..bb.bbbut the screen looks funny when i try to watch a YouTube video at the lowest light setting with 1 eye holding it sideways with a strobe light going off in the background
seriously though i don't know. Google F'ed my shipping up and i went from having it yesterday to having it Thursday so id love to put this thing to the test myself but the wait continues.
Its objectively a bad screen, thats why. Honestly i don't get why people are defending the screen. Its one thing to say you acknowledge the problem but are ok with it, but to pretend this isn't an issue is crazy and if you're ok with a $850+ phone with a bad display, then thats cool, enjoy it. I've seen three pixel 2xl's in real life (the one i bought and two others coworkers bought) and the extreme blue shift is identical on all of them, this is just how the screen is. Its worse than my 2 year old 6p screen. Do i love everything else about the phone, yes, is the display a dealer breaker for me, yes, is it for everyone, no; but again that doesnt make the screen ok on a flagship top of the price range phone. I think its embarrassing to the reviewers who were ok with it, they should be universally trashing this display, cause its the worse ive ever seen on a flagship phone.
love how he explained the color issue.
He made a great review! I don't know why everyone is crying so much. This phone is amazing. I've had it for three days now and I might be lucky but I have 0 issues. The colors for me are fine and it's really smooth. I'm extremely happy with my purchase and can't wait for further development for this phone.
I like his reviews as he is seeing the device for what it is and compares it to how he uses it.. Yes his use might be different than ours but at least he is reviewing in the sense of a normal user (or at least for me he does). The whole display thing i feel is being blown way out of proportion. Its like if no one ever mentioned it would you have really noticed it? or would you have gone about your day like it never existed. For cases where it is faulty that is where warranty comes in play. so i'll be getting my phone and going through my works but most likely i will be keeping mine

Both my wife and several coworkers pointed out the tint immediately, "why is it so blue" without any understanding of the controversy around it. I thought i had a particularly bad one, as the blue tint happens at around a 10% angle, but two other coworkers have gotten theirs and they're identical. I thought i could deal with it, but in normal use i dont look at my phone straight on its almost always at a slight angle, so the top of the phone would be blue tinted and the bottom would look fine, and scrolling with two different color temps is a weird thing, particularly peoples faces.
To be clear, all phones shift a little, my nexus 6p has a slight blue shift then rainbow at nearly flat, and my wifes S8 has a slight red shift then rainbows, but the P2XL shift is in another world, its so extreme and so fast, and actually gets better looking at extreme angles than at slight ones.

I think its embarrassing to the reviewers who were ok with it, they should be universally trashing this display, cause its the worse ive ever seen on a flagship phone.

Totally agreed with you on this. for such a high price flagship, we shouldn't be able to oversee issues like this. That's the reason I cancelled it. I'll wait a few more weeks or months if things gets better and re-order. For now, I wouldn't lie to my self and say I can live with this.
His comments on the display were interesting and it is odd that the display supports a wider color gamut but isn't using it (as evidenced by Firefox). That said, the images people typically use to compare the display are grossly oversaturated even if they are using a wider gamut. The first comparison picture he uses with the S8 has much more detail in the Pixel version because the S8 is blowing out the colors so much to produce those saturated neon greens. I'd be interested to actually see the Pixel up against another display that is using proper color saturation with a wider gamut.

I feel like I can live with the screen washout and blue tint at the angle. I'm a little worried about the screen burn in and clucky noises that people are reporting hopefully those are just defects from a really bad batch. I get mine tomorrow so I will definitely be keeping an eye on it. If anything is bad I return it and just get the Pixel XL.
Notable XDA Dev supercurio sheds some light on some of the claims made in Marques' review.
Keep in mind this guy made the software that Erica Griffin used to measure the display. He knows what he's talking about, more than most.

Go with your own review, who knows what some reviewers motives are. Hell id praise a phone if it meant they kept sending me free stuff and devices! MKBHD is honest I believe though
The blue tint is when it's at a certain angle. Now that angle may be less than most phones, but I don't know of anyone who reads their phone at an angle. He explains that in the video as well. Like he said if your "that guy/gal' then this phone isn't for you. I think when people bring stuff up that bothers them & make a big deal about it everyone is looking for it. If other reviewers had never said anything this wouldn't be as big of an issue. Just nitpicking now.
