Glowing buttons? - EVO 4G General

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. When I'm in a dark room or outside late at night and my Evo is turned off the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen still glow, its very dim but still noticeable. They even glow when the phone is completely powered down and when charging. Any ideas?

That's odd. They should only turn on when the screen is on and when the light sensor detects little light. I am thinking that something is preventing your Evo from fully sleeping when the screen is off.
Try using a task manager and killing all the apps running, then try and see if the problem still occurs.

Ive done the task manager thing and even tried a master reset. seems like something may be shorted out inside the phone. it has NEVER been dropped.

This is normal. Its so you can see the buttons.

I have this issue also, it's not much of a problem other than maybe draining the battery a small bit more. I'm sure it's not so you can see the buttons as when the screen is off, the buttons don't function any ways. But as I said, it's not a big issue to me.

That's funny, I just noticed this for the first time yesterday as well. I really don't see a battery drain from it, but I don't like that something may be broken for this to happen. Any more thoughts on this?? Phone is otherwise perfect as far as I'm concerned.

This may be similar to the freezing people are reporting

I have a NEON300, in other words, the US version with 20 key and US 3G. The problem I experience once in a while is sort of like the freezing people are mentioning. When mine freezes, or at least when I finally notice it has frozen, I get a blinking green or yellow LED, the phone is warm, and my battery is almost dead. Almost like I was on a call for 2 hours but I wasn't. The unit will not respond to any buttons or anything. The only way to wake it up is to pull the battery and restart. Then it works fine again for about a week. Has anyone else had this issue and possibly found a fix? Thanks.
I've had my US Dual for about a week now and I've had mine freeze at least twice. The LED's are normal, but the screen and buttons are non-responsive. The reset button under the battery cover does work and it resets fine and works. It seems to happen to me when I'm browsing the web.
I've got the US 20 key version with SPB mobile shell and the diamond theme running. Mine seems to freeze about 1-3 times per day. The led lights are still blinking but none of the buttons work or opening the phone. I have to to a soft reset with the stylus and then everything is back to normal...
It only does this when it powers down, i.e. auto sleep, then it won't wake back up.
No fix that I know of.
What a BS problem to have. I hope HTC comes out with a fix for this. I don't know about your guy's phones but mine gets warm and the battery drains for some reason. Maybe I will uninstall all of the 3rd party apps and see how that goes.

ARGH! I just can't take the lack of a notification LED!

It's finally driven me to the point that I'm just going to sell the Nexus for a profit and get a G2. I can't take picking up my phone every single time I want to check if I have a message. I've never had a smartphone without this feature, and it's just a nightmare.

I do miss having an LED indicator too... but I wonder if they took it out due to battery life reasons. Is there an app that can help give better indications in case for missed calls or texts that can do a reminder without an LED indicator... maybe even use the LED light on the back of the camera is better than nothing
i would say just wait until someone makes it so it uses the LEDs under the softkeys as notification lights

That would work fine for me, if only someone would write it!
Use NoLED, works great for me. I like it more than the trackball notifications on my N1 now, they look awesome on the screen.

I don't want to power-on the screen for a notification that may be left un-noticed for an hour.
I didn't really like the idea of NoLED either but I just decided to try it for the hell of it. I use the blink mode and set the time out to 1 hour so if it's idle for an hour the notifications will stop. I've checked the battery drain and it seems to be quite small with blink mode at least (since I'm only having it display the notifications for 1 second every 30 seconds). So really, 2 seconds of screen time every minute, which is about 120 seconds every hour, or about 2 minutes of screen time where it's mostly black and a few lit pixels, and then after that 1 hour it stops.

I tried noled but must confess I never spent any time setting it up so the battery drain I noticed may have been avoidable.
Just to pick up on the above... I'd want the notifications instantly obvious so that a quick glance at my phone would notify me of any messages. Using the above method I'd only see a notification for some of the time and not all.
Lighting up the bottom buttons would be a much better option for me but in the meantime I might try noled again.

Other than the fact that they're not colored, seems a bit better IMO, more noticeable. Also, battery drain really is minimal with NoLed...

The three pixels on the screen drawing power aren't going to impact your battery life heavily.

to be honest id be more paranoid about burn in , cuz really if i get a text when im sleeping and it goes unnoticed for 8 hours then what
With NoLED you can set notification timeouts, I have mine set to 30 minutes because I always have my phone near me and 30 minutes is plenty. I also have it set to use the Proximity sensor so that if the phone is in my pocket it's not displaying any notification, only when you remove the phone from your pocket and the proximity sensor detects that it's clear will it display the notification instantly. You can also set a "sleep" time for notifications, so I have mine turn off at 2am and turn back on at 6am.
If there is any increased battery drain I haven't noticed it, but then again I don't leave notifications on flashing for hours either.

The notifications move around the screen to prevent any pixel burn-in. You can set them to timeout after a certain amount of time also.
Have you guys even bothered trying out NoLED? Haha
Good to know but on top of that don't the notifications move around the screen?
Edit: ikon beat me to it.

NO!, i fear change!
Have the phone make a sound/vibrate. No need to pick it up.
or download noLED. Problem solved.
I've made a couple posts in the Poor Battery Life on NS? thread( such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10143276&postcount=159) detailing my experience with the Nexus S's battery.
I use noLED as my notification system with large icons rather than the default little dots and no time out method. The only other special thing I've done to it is turn on the proximity sensor so noLED doesn't run while it's in my pocket. My boss likes to do a lot of paperwork in the super late evening/early morning and sends me emails accordingly(this is why I don't leave the sound/vibrate on, lol). noLED's impact on battery life is extremely negligible. I would put it on par with the power with the power consumption of an actual LED notification light due to the way SAMOLED and blacks work.
And, if you're worried about burn in, like someone said, the icons shift around the screen in order to avoid that.

that proximity sensor idea while its in your pocket, genius
Just tried noled again and am noticing a few force close errors.
What settings are best for this app and when a notification is received, what are you using to wake tje phone again as the power button causes issues as explained in the splash screen after install?
I'm also seeing all the bottom buttons light up as well as the notification on the screen, is this normal and if so is this not consuming battery unnecesarily?
Seems a tad buggy to me this app on the Nexus S. Would appreciate exact settings / configuration from anyone that has it running satisfactorily.

Nexus S won't go to sleep

Looks like I've just solved my own issue in the midst of creating a post. For those that are curious anyway, this is what happened..
My phone would not go into sleep mode. Clicking the sleep button would put it into sleep for less than a second before it popped back to the lock screen and stayed there.
The solution was to clean the USB port. Apparently some debris found its way into the USB port (I wonder how, certainly not from leaving it in my pocket, where it normally would be) and wreaked a small havoc on my phone. All is well now and the phone is almost one month old. After rooting and fixing a ringtone issue, my only issue is the crappy Gallery app. The phone is great otherwise! Killer battery life too
Here's a video of what I'm talking about. Enjoy
Same issue here. How exactly did you clean the port?
My issue started immediately after using Shazam. I tried to Shazam a song, then after that the phone would not sleep. I switched batteries, factory reset, nothing fixes it.
In fact, the phone will sleep until the battery gets to about 50% then it just stays awake until it gets into like 20%.

[Q] Hardware Buttons Light

First I would like to say I can't remember how the keys are called, all I know they are the menu and back keys, and that they should light up for a second and turn off until used again.
I'm having couple of problems with my phone being awake all times, battery drain and mostly overheating.
Some hours ago, my phone was reaching battery temperature of about 42ÂșC while screen off and apparently "nothing" abnormal running in background. After restarting the device, first thing coming to mind was to put it in the fridge for a couple of minutes to let it cool down.
The problem is, 2 minutes turned out to be some hours. When I removed it from the fridge, I noticed the hardware keys weren't lighting up. Restarted, still nothing. They work, but won't light.
What could it be? Maybe the low temperature did something to it? Or was it condensed water from the fridge? What can I do to make them go back fully functional again?
Issue solved, the overheating made it go back working once more.
Maybe try putting your phone in a bag of rice for 24 hrs to draw the moisture out

LCD Backlight Issue

Im having a problem with the lcd backlight and figured I would ask here. I've had a v20 rooted since Dec of 2016 and luckily have been spared from many of the hardware problems other users here have suffered. Just today, after watching Youtube videos for about an hour at maximum brightness, my main display just went completely dark. With the backlight bleed over from the second screen, I could see my display, but without it on I can't see anything. I'm assuming the backlight has somehow become broken. I'm assuming the only fix for this is a screen replacement, which at this point I don't want to do. Just curious if anyone has had this happen, or if by a miracle this may be bad software that is fixable without replacing parts. Thanks to any and all info in advance.--Philip
Edit-Just now thinking it may have been a thermal issue. Phone is still noticeably warm about 5-10 minutes after a battery pull and being shutdown completely. Smelled the back of the phone and noticed a slight smokey scent. Potentially watching videos at max brightness caused a meltdown? Idk just trying to figure out what the heck happened
Edit 2- So plugging in the phone while powered off to check battery levels has wielded wildly different results. Fist time I plugged it in it was 5%. Then unplugged and replugged immediately and it was 30%, and now a third time it is down to 10%. Wondering if the battery could be bad? Don't have extras to test a different one, but the original shows no signs of deformation. Wondering if a failing battery could cause the main display to disable. Anyways just another thought
Hello. I know its has been a long time but is there any update to your problem. I am in the same boat.
