Compass flicker - Legend General

Hi,
New to this forum but have read here a bit from time to time.
I have downloaded the compass app from the android market, and apart from having to calibrate the compass very often, the compass needle jumps to point at the trackball/base of the phone every time menu, home, or back is pressed.
The harder i press, the closer to the base it points. Could someone test this and see if they have the same issue? Simply download compass, and while watching the needle, press and hold 'menu' and see what happens.
Curious if this is a manufacturing flaw or if i should have it replaced.
Thanks.

Anyone? bump bump

which compass? There are quite a fee apps.... the top free one?

Yeah, top free one with the blue compass logo. This one to be specific:

When you open the app and after calibrating, see if the needle starts moving around when you press or hold the menu button or any other buttons around that area. For me it does a complete 180 if I fully press menu which is kind of weird.. Same thing happens in google maps, the little blue arrow points towards the bottom when pressing menu, even if just pressing over the key without activating it.

Mine does seem to move but only slightly not that extreme... any magnets on your fingers? Lol

yeah tried without the magnets too but still flickers

Any other way to wake the screen besides the power button?

Basically my dad has really bad arthritis and it difficult for him to push the power button to wake his phone. Is there anyway to make the capacitive buttons wake the screen?
You can slide the keyboard open/closed.
I have an app called widget locker and with that there is a setting to wake phone with any button. I can use vol or camera button.

Apparently you can put a magnet on the LED (flash under camera) and it will turn on. It didn't work for me until someone said it should be right at that spot and then, voila, it comes on.
I used a harddrive magnet (really strong), though, so I'm not sure how powerful it needs to be.
There's a file in /system/usr/keylayout called s3c-keypad.kl or something. Take that and turn one of the capacitive buttons into POWER instead of, say, SEARCH? Idk if that'll work though..

Wouldn't that be dangerous to the phone? Also, wipe the memory?
or am I thinking of something else......

Not these days. Data's not stored with magnetic strips any more. All the HDs you use have powerful earth magnets in them anyway.
now you take something like that to tape drives and such....there's another story.

Desire Z issues

hey guys,
i want to collect all (hardweare) issues u have with your desire z. i bought mine on monday, got it on wednesday.
since i have the device, i see these issues:
Touchscreen does not respond while the device is plugged in to the power adapter and is fully loaded (when its still loading the touchscreen works perfectly)
nothing happens when i press the trackpad button (is it a button? when i press on it i can feel the pressure point like a standard button)
display does not stay in position when you hold the device tilted
what issues do you have? can you confirm the issues i have?
espacially the touchscreen issue is strange and annoying

My touchscreen works fine so far and doesn't have this problem. Maybe you use a non-standard charger? I once experienced the same issue on my old Motorola Milestone with a Blackberry charger (the touchscreen became erratic), changed it to my original charger and didn't receive any problem since.

Yes it is a button. If you use it on a list pressing the trackpad is equivalent to a tap. If you mean to use it to wake the screen then it will not work as the standard Sense UI doesn't support this.

I grew accustomed to hold the upper part of the phone (the display) with both of my index finger when using it at bed. I once perceived the hinge mechanism as a "weakness" for this phone, but I learned to get pass this.
The trackpad button basically works as an "Enter" button. It has no function on the homescreen. But you can use it to select an item on a list, such as the apps page, or the links on a web page.
What angle do you mean, when you say the screen moves? In the "normal" angle (right side up, with the phone tilted towards me), mine is very solid. If held upside-down (such as typing while in bed), the keyboard has a tendency to close, as its pretty much meant to do. Just the slightest pressure from my index fingers will hold the screen in place (I find my index fingers to rest on the sides of the screen naturally, and hardly even have to think about it).

Capacitive buttons pushing themselves

My 3 Capacitive buttons keep pushing themselves. While i type a message or read my email or i do anything my apps start to go back like someone is pressing the back button or the home button. I noticed that this happens if i leave the phone in a warm place. is there anything i can do about this?
thanks
Try to clean your screen with dry cloth. Sometime wet surface can active touchscreen display. I also notice that if I use non original power supply can make my streak like crazy. My streak become runing some activity again and again and again altought I didn't touch anything.
Oily screen does this give it a good wipe.it happened to me after having chips.if I would raise my finger 1cm away from a key on keyboard it would press it without me touching the keyboard.
Your phone seems to be haunted. (creepy)

They definately don't like heat, I been in the upper 90's/low 100's here lately and if I'm out in the heat very long with the phone in my pocket, it starts freaking out and just starts a constant reboot cycle until I get somewhere cool. I went to an area fleamarket today and it did it again.
Mine does something similar when plugged into a non dell usb charger, read it head to do with interference affecting the capacitive screen. not sure if you we're charging at the time.

So that would explain why my Streak bootlooped when I was out and about the other day.
Had to leave the Streak in the car today(turned off and not in direct sunlight) while I had jury duty, when I got out and turned it on, it went into a reboot loop until I got the AC going and sit it in front of the vent for a few minutes. Everything is fine since.

Sticky home button

Just today my home button started getting sticky. it clicks two times instead of one. Has anyone experiwnced similar issues with their s4?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Maybe it got dirty with something sticky you held before using the phone Try cleaning it and see if it still happens.
Mine has gone sticky as well. It only registers one click, but it needs more force to push in, and it gives with an audible clicky noise. It also feels slow in the 'release'. Considering getting it fixed.
started happening to me yesterday (14 days of use), and the home button is also sticky, but only on the left side. if I press the button in the center or on the right side, the click is normal. pressing on left side I can feel 2 levels on the click.
any way to fix this? feels like broken.
Nobody?
Mine started to get sticky too. I think it has something to do with the microUSB port. Try inserting the microUSB cable and shifting the port up and down.
Sticking Home Button
i have this issue as well, sent mine to service center, hope they fix it or replace the unit.
I think it is a design issue, we users might have pressed it harder than usual, which tear up something that holds the home button (Since it is elongated) on both ends. and if you notice, it is no longer protruding (a litttle), it is aligned with the screen.
I think in the long run, more users will report this issue, i had mine for only just 2 weeks, variant GT-9505 black
By any chance any of you have installed pxxxtube? LMFAO
Sticky Button = Replaced screen
hi guys,
sent mine into Samsung Service center, and although i complain of a wobbly home button, they have replace the LCD, since according them the two are connected.
I had the same issue and was able to fix it by doing the following. Put a small amount of water on your fingertip and rub the home button and surrounding areas with it (you may want to do this with phone off). Use the corner of a piece of paper and go around the home button, in between the gap. This soaks up the excess water and cleans the gap. I think what happens is that we get something sticky in there, like juice or soda.

Thanks, I actually fixed mine
Using onscreen buttons, launcher with gestures and alternative apps available on playstore really helps not to stress home buttons.
Samsung should remove this physical home button on next galaxy series.

long press

Anyone else getting flaky long press detection (distinct issue from jumpy multitouch)?
Seems worse if I use the flat of my finger as opposed to the tip (using the tip seems 99.9% reliable)
I'm having the same problem, but I don't really think its a big deal.
Don't think it is a hardware problem if that's what you mean. I think the threshold is set a little low. Any slight movement in your finger is translated into movement, even when the contact patch changes. For example if you roll your finger a little, or press down harder it interprets the slight change in the contact area as a drag. That's why if you use your finger tips it works. You're less likely to roll your fingers and even if you press harder the contact changes less. Happens to me too. Just have to remember to be steady and your pads work fine.

I believe your theory is correct
It seems long-press false-trigger on the keyboard is happening frequently since applying the latest update. Hold down, for example, the 'a' key to see what I'm referring to. Fortunately, it's adjustable under 'language & input', 'Google keyboard', 'advanced settings', 'key long press delay'. I had to change it from default of 300ms to 500ms.
Once I trained my finger to apply zero force and just rest lightly on the screen, most of my long press problems went away (though I still seem to have a terrible time getting the "paste" button to stay up on text fields - picking up my finger to move over and press "paste" usually seems to be interpreted as some kind of movement and the "paste" button disappears on me again).
