Can i get some help with a VF Magic 32B? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hey,
I have a Vodafone Magic 32B, which I am using with a Three simcard.
Yesterday, I started trying to root my device.
My device was running 1.6, so I tried to downgrade, following theunlockr. com/2009/08/14/how-to-root-your-mytouch-3g/
After many issues, I managed to get to stage 27.
Noticing that he linked to a 32A Driver, i instead tried to progress with the lastest AmonRa-Sapphire-V1.7.0G.img.
When this didn't work, I tried a few other versions that I had downloaded throughout my exploration of rooting.
At this point, it was 4.30 in the morning, and I decided to call it quits.
Luckily, i had made a nandroid backup.
I restored it, and, thank god, my phone booted.
However, it wasn't a restore as such.
The menu is different, the app store is different (and the camera is noticeably poorer).
However, checking the Firmware version, it says v1.5?!
1)Does this mean I successfully downgraded?
2)From here, how would i root the phone?
3)After i root the phone, is there any way to get back to the 1.6 interface? With a better camera (that can be accessed by apps)?
Thanks for any advice you can give. I'm aware that there may be loads of post like this, because i spent a good 12 hours yesterday sifting through the various methods. However, I would really appreciate any help, because I don't want to brick my new phone (i just got it, second hand, yesterday).
Figured that i'd post what pops up on the fastboot screen
Sapphire PVT 32B ENG s-off H

Hopefully, this might give someone the info they need to advise me.

Need clarifications about radio/SPL/ROMs on 32A

Hi,
I've posted pretty much the same yesterday in the development section in Amon_RA recovery thread, but figured it wasn't the best thing to do, so I'm moving my questions here, where they have probably belonged all along...(and I'll edit my post there)
I'm not exactly noob when it comes to PC, Linux, phones and stuff, but I've been trying to make some sense of this SPL and radio stuff for days for the fear of bricking my phone (it's rather expensive, after all) and the more I read, the more confused I in fact become. It seems to me there's a lot of contradicting info available here in the forums.
First, I've got the 32A european HTC branded Magic:

Now, on the thread about Amon_RA recovery, it says in big red letters "Make sure your phone is rooted and that you are using an engineerings SPL". Also, a few pages into the very same thread, there's this:
skittleguy said:
If you can confirm it works through fastboot, then you can also do this:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.1(G or H, depending on your version).img
This will flash it to your phone. Note that you'll need an engineering SPL for this.

However, when I rooted my phone a few weeks back, I used Amon_RA recovery 1.2.0 - the latest at the time - without flashing it permanently to make nandroid backup of the unrooted phone and then to apply the necessary patches to root my phone succesfuly. Then I flashed the Amon_RA recovery without any problems directly into the phone and been using it since, even did some nandroid backups and restores without any problems at all. Should this even be possible without the engineering SPL (which I figure I don't have, it being .0009 and S-ON)? If I understood the SPL info correctly, it shouldn't, but I was still able to do it...So how come?
Also, can I perhaps try to flash some custom ROM for 32A without the risk of bricking the device? Am I right in my understanding that pretty much the only way to brick the phone is to start messing with radio and SPL? So is there any risk involved in just downloading a ROM, wiping the phone, flashing the update to see if it works without tampering with radio/SPL?
As for the Hero ROMs, once again, do I need to update radio and/or SPL to make them work or can I just try? And if I DO update them (I gather the .2005 SPL should work in my Magic, not really sure about radios, though) and I want to go back to my original ROM for some reason (given that I have nandroid backup available), will I be required to downgrade radio/SPL back as well (therefore be once again exposed to the risk of bricking the phone)?
Thanks for any clarifications on these. If someone can direct me to some clear info on the issues, I'll gladly take that, but as I've said, most of the informations I've dug out the past few days (and weeks, actually) only deepen my confusion. I'm quite sure my questions have probably been answered a lot of times before, but this forum is so packed with information it's becoming hard to actually find exactly what you're looking for, even if you try to do so. Thanks again.

Restoring stock firmware on Vodafone Magic

I've just bought an HTC Magic from eBay. It is loaded with some variety of custom firmware and is running very poorly - it only intermittently gets past the boot screen. I don't want to go to the trouble of arguing for a refund and figure that I should be able to sort it out myself. There are a ton of FAQs and guides that I've read, but they all seem to be about loading a custom firmware, rather than restoring a stock one. I'm technically literate, but I don't know anything about hacking phones. I'm hoping someone in the community will be able to help me out - I'd just have a go at it, but I'm afraid of bricking it.
I can get into fastboot, which tells me the following:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.26I

I'm not sure what the firmware is that's currently installed. I get a Hero boot screen, so I'm assuming it's a Hero ROM. I'm running a Mac, but I do have access to a PC.
Thanks,

Status update: I have the Android SDK and Fastboot working. fastboot devices recognises my device in fastboot mode, but I can't get booted up so I'm getting nothing with ADB. I've found a .zip that is supposed to contain an original Vodafone stock image. I have a microSD reader if necessary to copy files to the card.
Can anyone help me over the last hurdle?
I think I've got this sorted now (touch wood), so mods please feel free to close this thread. Thanks to all the XDA-developers members who have written guides, howtos and FAQs - your help has been greatly appreciated.
Out of interest did you manage to get an stock Vodafone ROM or solve your problem??
I have rooted my phone today and stupidly followed a guide for a T-Mobile My touch 3g - so my phone now thinks it is exactly that
Cheers
Dave
If you've got this .zip that contains the Vodafone stock ROM could you possibly share it?
My device is playing up and I'd like to flash it back to the stock ROM so I can return it.
Cheers
im also desperate for original vf firmware. Want to ebay my phone, and cant in good conscience whilst it's running custom fw.
thanks.

Can't root mt3g 32b

SO my roommate and I have been trying for daays to root my phone now and we just dont know what to do. He has a rooted nexus one and knows how to do alot of stuff and we cannot figure this out.
So far alls we have been able to do is downgrade to cupcake using the goldcard method. We used the method from the UNLOCKR and can get as far as installing the rom and it will reboot and stay on the vodaphone screen for hours and do nothing i have tried taking the battery out and restarting multiple times. Just something isnt working here.
I then reverted back to the goldcard and tried doing the one click method and whenever i try to backup the recovery image, it says backup failed.
I hate 1.5 and hated 1.6 I have spent many many many hours trying to do this and just cannot figure this out. If anybody has any idea whats going on here any help would be appreciated.
Questions:
I see many people while rooted have the mytouch loading screen, mine is now vodafone? why?
any links or very specific instructions to get me as far as loading a rom again?

I would really appreciate any help.

[Q] Recovery Mode Involuntarily Restarting

Hello...
Fairly new here...
Also new to this rooting/rom business...
but, to the point.
I have a Rogers Magic 32A, with the stock Rogers rom.
my fastboot specs are
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.76. 0010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD-12

I am using the universal androot app, and running ROM Manager.
Whenever I boot into recovery, it either freezes after a few seconds, or resets the phone back to the first splash screen, and continues to work as normal (no bricking or any of that jazz.)
So anyway, my question is...
Does anyone know why it's doing this?
I got it to flash Cyanogenmod 6.0 once, but it didn't actually install.
Do I need a different radio and SPL?
I've tried searching, and I found nothing... but if there is already a thread with this issue, I'll gladly revert to that, and delete this thread.
TL;DR
-Phone is involuntarily restarting when I go into recovery mode
-Running stock Rogers rom, ROM manager, rooted with universal androot app
-New to android customization
-Am I doing anything wrong?
Thanks for reading.
I have the same problem!!
What I can do to fix it?
I'm really scared ...
the problem likely is you are loading the ebi1 recovery (magic 32a running 3.x radio) on you "hero like" magic (magic 32a running 6.x radio)
The hero recovery will work but you may find few roms.
I'd reccomend these rooting instructions
The process will work from the top I believe but since you ran androot after placing the files onto the phone you can skip to where I run exploid (with the seceetlol password) and run 'su' instead of exploid.
Once you have a 3.x radio with working rom and recovery if you want to checkout rom manager you can hopefully with less issues and if an issue happens you can always flash a recovery via fastboot.
I did end up fixing my issue.
Great Big Dog on the androidforums helped me out...
I tried to look for my thread that I posted on the androidforums, but I guess it got deleted...
pretty much... I followed GBD's quick root guide for the post 911 update for rogers magics, with a tiny bit of a switch for flashing the amonRA rom.
I can't remember exactly what it was, and I really wish that thread didn't get deleted.
And I can't link in any posts, so I can't really help you out.
I usually always just suggest installing a fresh RUU, especially if you don't know what you're doing... like me.
you can probably find one on the htc website.

Another G1 randomly shuts off thread.

Hi, I've been lurking around the forum for a while, but now after much googleing and investigating I'm going to try and post my problem as I think members from this forum might be able to answer my question better than google.
My problem is that my G1 keeps on shutting down, I have tried many things and it continues to do this.
Now, this is a used phone that I bought and it does have a warranty. But the point was to actually be able to use the phone instead of buying it and then returning it.
This is my first experience with a G1 phone, but I heard so many good things about Android that I wanted to give it a try.

The phone is running cyanogen mod 5.0.8 and even with a new battery it keeps on shutting down. I also tried clocking the phone down a little bit, and it's behaving the same way.
I really don't want to let my little sis down on this one. She was extra happy when she got her first Android phone the day it got home, and its only a G1! It was also me who recommended it so as you can see I'm in a bit of trouble if it doesn't end up working.
Any help will be much appreciated.
BTW-The battery had a little charge when we got it (yesterday) and put it in the phone, but as you're guessing the phone shut down then, and also it shut down yet again just about 30 mins ago, after it being charged for around 5 or 6 hours during the night.

have you tryed switching roms to see if it was a rom problem ?
Are you overclocking? That can cause it to shutdown/reboot. Also, I'm with yohshua, try another rom maybe.
Since I posted this message I've learned a lot about my phone and android, however I don't think its a software issue.
Yes the phone was overclocked and I tried to lower the clock to stock to no avail. And also I tried calibrating the battery, and the phone was good for 1 day, and then it kept on shutting off.
I think I've exhausted all my options and right now it will be wise if I tried to return it.
However now I have to figure out how to put it back to the way it was. And I'm not even sure if that is possible.
My phone settings are the following:
Dream PVT 32B ENG S-OFF

So as you can see I have the famous "danger spl" installed. I also have Amon Ra’s Recovery Image installed, and what I'm trying to go back to is DMD 64 which would be Android 1.6. So my question is, can I just use Amon Ra's Recovery Image to go back to Android 1.6? And just return the phone that way? And what do I have to do in order to do this safely?
I bought off the phone from ebay btw.

if you google G1 stock image you'll find an update.zip file you can run from recovery, I suggest using Dream 1.7, or clockworks, simple, and easy, a problem might be with your radio image and your SPL.
I've got the same problem. It only shut off when unplugged from USB/charger. After flashing original spl, radio, rom and unrooting, after 6 weeks in warranty service, it turned out, that's a battery problem. I'm waiting for some new replacement battery now.

I've been looking around the site and in google and I can't quite find out how to do this. Is there a wiki that explains how to go back to stock from danger spl and radio 2.22.19.261?
I read somewhere that If you flash RC29, it replaces your radio and SPL so it doesn't brick your phone, is this true? If it is then I can just flash RC29 and upgrade from that right?
Thanks for all the help so far.
EDIT - I read the info about RC29 in this same web site: link
