USB mini Powered LED - G1 General

I wanna power a small LED with the usb mini jack on the G1....
I cut a usb cable in half plugged in the usb port to the computer....touched the connectors on the led and the light turned on....
Plugged in the Usb mini jack to the phone touched the connectors and nothing....
I know that we can use the usb jack to power our headphones......what i dont know is how to get the phone to power the LED....
i dont know how much power is used to get the headphones to work or what triggers them to start working when we play audio....Would an app like a toggle have to be implemented to make the usb mini port start pumpin out juice for the LED?
come on guys....a lil help here

to the top of the list i say

Like this?

between pin 5 and pin 8
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9167
The wires I had attached had nothing plugged in on the other end.

yep thats exactly what i want to do......
is there any way to do that to a regular usb mini jack or would i have to buy that one?

All usb connectors are the same.. thats why the U in usb stands for Universal Just make sure you have the right pins/wires.
I have to ask though... what's the point of this..?

Not quite what he meant. He meant will it work with a mini USB or does it require one of the weird HTC-USB pins.
And as ezterry said it goes between pin 5 and 8 -- and USB only has 4 pins, so no. It certainly requires weird HTC-USB.

yeah. ...it seems like the connector is universal but not the inside of it. ..I've seen 4 pin, 5 pin, 8 pin, 10 pin, 11 pin. ...but ill try testing some of those out too.
I want a lil usb dongle flashlight....n maybe it can help out with taking pictures in low light conditions. .... if it lights up nice n pix come out good with it maybe some1 can help me get it to activate with a toggle or make the phone recognize it as a flash.....personally im fine with just pluggin it in real quick if ima snap a pic....
I have another lil idea for the cam but its ugly and I don't know how well it will work yet so ima keep it on the hush hush till I test it

lol, sounds like you are trying to make a flash for the camera. If so, sounds excellent!
That would require storing up some juice to make the flash really bright though.

i wish i had the "know how" to make a real flash.....so far my idea is get some light shining out at a constant rate...im being told by some other ppl that the led im tryna use is too inefficient so im gonna see what else they can recommend...
they said theres other ones instead of the one i want that should shine 3 x brighter....i know theres some bright minds here that can help me improve my idea...
hopefully this generates a lil interest and others will chime in....
i hacked up a usb cable i had n its only 4 pins...so ima have to order an 11 pin one like ezterry said...so before i can go on i have to wait for this stuff to get here

does anyone know what kind of LEDs are used on other phones like the N1 or HD2? Just so we can get an idea of how powerful these lights would need to be to work well.
And more or less how much power can we get out of the usb port?
ezeterry?

Cree LEDs - http://www.cree.com/
Luxeon Flash LEDs - http://www.philipslumileds.com/products/luxeon-flash

I would think though in order for this to work, you would have to program in to your photo software the timing to send a command to the usb port (not even sure if it can be done) to flash at the appropriate time. Plus, like I said before, you would have to store up some energy in order to give your led some power to get it to light up bright enough. Correct me if I'm wrong though, just a halfway educated guess. lol

yeah for now ima keep the design simple...if it lights up ill see how much light were gettin. ..if its good then ill be happy
if its crap ill test out other options....

storing voltage is used on xenon flash types, which operate like a strobe light / disposable camera.
LED's need a regulated source of voltage and current... 3.3 - 5v is usually the range for LED's.

looks like they did something along the lines of what i want for the ipod/phone....not pointing the way i want but...makes me think my idea wont have a problem workin

Project Electric Himalaya

Hello to all. I'm a "new" member to the XDA-Dev community, and I am today presenting a document on my project that I've been dreaming about for 2 years or so. Finally, I had enough time to take time off my schedule to do something significant today - start this project officially.
I have an O2 XDA II with a broken connector. I will be attempting to hardwire an electrical source to the device by as many means possible. I have created this thread for people to come together and discuss any information they might have, any thoughts/ideas they want to share, or any observation(s) on their own experiments with this device.
http://s21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/tubecena/?action=view&current=himalaya.jpg
ps. : Here is something i forgot to add to the drawing :- At the end of the two wires in the end, I aim to put a USB male/female (haven't decided). Maybe i'll even redesign the area of the connector, but that would result in heavy work. We'll see how it goes. (and see how this thread gets feedback)
Here's something that might kickstart your contribution to this thread :
- Will it be possible to run the device without a battery with a charger of 5V?
- Will it be possible to join the two plates, positive (1+2) and negative (5+6), together, and get more power? Will there be any changes? Will there be a performance hike?
- What will happen to the device if a charger of 5.2V is used?
- If the two end wires are left not connected to a source, will an energy leak of any kind happen?
- Will the length of the wires significantly increase resistance and therefore reduce battery life?
I'm new here, go easy on me! >.<
Thanks for your time, and effort.
your questions are mainly in the general electric cat rather then himalya really
"- Will it be possible to run the device without a battery with a charger of 5V?"
yes unless the device detect the batt present and refuse to work without it
"- What will happen to the device if a charger of 5.2V is used?"
thumb rule is 20% each way without any problem
"- If the two end wires are left not connected to a source, will an energy leak of any kind happen?"
electrons travel from + to minus can't travel over air unless it's very hf
"- Will the length of the wires significantly increase resistance and therefore reduce battery life?"
there are many sites which let you calc the resistence of wires over lenght
but if you don't make them longer then 50cm you should not worry
Ah, thank you for your reply. Yes maybe you are right about the "electrical category" part, but since I was working on Himalaya, I might have just gotten a little over-excited and thought I might start a "project". Right you are, indeed this is purely electrical stuffs, but if you/anyone else might have any other information or ideas to refurbish your Himalaya, maybe this might be the place?
I was thinking of making use of the cradle from XDA II, resulting in a rewiring of the cradle and the device. Then that would mean that I need alot of USB cables, a drill, and maybe some wood? Well, if anyone has any points to bring up, speak up yeah?
In any case, IF I do decide to make something to help those dead Himalayas (like I said earlier, remodelling the cradle and device), then we'll have this thread as a tut.
Thanks and have a nice day people.
DEAD Hima.
okay, so i took two wires, connected the battery and the device (one plate and one pin each) and tried to fire up the device. It wouldn't start. I reinserted the battery to the Hima and it wouldn't fire up. I'm guessing that it's DEAD. Anyone might want to help me on this one?
- my connector is dead.
- my 2 batts are fully charged, still no avail. (not dead batt i guess)
- i charged my backup batt but still no avail.
- either there is an overall power undersurge(i'm just shooting random thoughts), or the RED SWITCH is causing the problems. coz the red switch is indeed loose"r", or, more loose, than before. Maybe I hit it abit too hard in the process and thought the battery did it, i'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh and I'm buying a SECOND HAND PDA/XDA/WMTS DEV. I'm situated in Singapore. And I just need a very cheap one. I wouldn't mind if it has 1/10 cosmetics, coz i just need it to let my mum play solitaire. She's an avid player and would be very very cranky if she doesn't play in every few hours. Would preferably consider a very rundown XDA II, or XDA IIs, provided the cost is below SGD 70. Thanks and have a nice day people.
ps. even if it's not rundown, just pm me, we'll see how it goes. I need this asap!
Connector broken
Hi,
I have the same problem, my PDA connector (22 pins) is broken and I would like to connect directly the power on the battery pins (6 pins connector) but I dont know where are the + and - on these 6 pins!!!
Thanks for your help,
TD.
thats why we made a wiki for you

completely broken
No because the 22 pins connector is completely broken (motherboard too)!!
But when I plug a charged battery, it's OK...
curious

[Guide]Problems with charging?this might help you :)

Hi guys,
the last five days i was having problems with my usb port and it really scared me because this is how i lost my last phone. It first started to charge randomly, sometimes charged sometimes not, until it didnt charged at all,but thats not the case with my x8(i hope so ).
If you having promblems with charging too, keep reading this thread and i hope you will get an answer.
Usb looseness can be caused due to several reasons, what im gonna tell doesnt guarantee that it will solve your problem.
1)Change your charger
-If the problem is in the usb cable that will solve your problem for sure!
if any of your friends have the same phone borrow his charger and try to charge your phone.
I dont really suggest to buy a new one just like that, maybe read further and if nothing happen then go for a new charger.
2)Clean the usb port
-Its really common for the usb port to fill with dust and lint and as a result usb cable doesnt fit in the port well.
Check this thread out to see what you have to clean
telmosousa said:
A while ago I noticed that my micro USB cable does not fit well on my U8800 and when I picked up my phone the cable the cable always fall out without doing any force. After reading various sites, to decide what would be the best way and after I did it I'm now leaving here how to solve this problem. In my case it was dust and lint that accumulated because of taking the phone in pocket, etc..
Tutorial
You should use a toothpick, previously buffed with a fine sandpaper like the image below. You can use other objects, but with the toothpick you can do it without turning off the phone because it isn't a electrical conductor and you can also sharpen the tip very easily.

You should clean the area paint in blue below:
After this you should give special attention to areas in microusb port marked in red below which is where bolts fits and attach the cable to the port. You should try to clean as much as possible the dust that has entrenched there.
In my case after 5 minutes of hard work this was the result:
I used the lamp on my bedside table for a better look inside the door. Those black things are dust that came out of there now do not have any slack in the port works at 100% and I can move the phone without any problem.
Click to collapse
3)move the thing* inside the usb port
If you didnt understand what im talking about i hope the pic will help you
-Try to barely move it with a pin or with you finger or with something else, if the problem resist try to move it a little bit more,be carefull!!!Don't push it too hard it can break!!!
For me it works when i push it from the front side of the phone to the back, but if that doesnt help try the opposite.
This is how i solved my problem, after noticing that my usb cable was unstable when it was plugged in, i tried to move it and it worked, now it charging normally and if i move it the opposite direction it doesnt charge
*****Warning*****That is for when you have problem with it, if your port is ok dont mess with it!!!!!!!
And dont mess with this too much, you can break it!!!!!!
I'm not responsible for any damage you possible do to your phone
If you have any suggetion for the thread or for my english( ) please feel free to tell me by posting your comment or by pm

Lenovo Tab M10 Pogo Pins

Hi,
I have a Tab M10 tablet. It's a fine and cheap tablet that I will use to control my Smart Home system.
I want to mount the tablet on the wall. I wil use some kind of custom built mounting frame for the tablet.
For permanent power, I want to use the Pogo Pins at the bottom if possible. (the same pins are used in smart docks)
Does anyone know if I just can put 5Vdc on the pins and what is the polarity.
Greetings,
Remko
Edit:
Here are some pictures of the dock connectors

No one knows how to use those pins without a docking station?
Hi, I have the same plans as you, same tablet, same purpose..... bought a 2 pin usb cable for smart watch, same dimensions, the tablet seems to know something is happening as it vibrates a little. but then it does not seem to charge :/ If you ever found a solution, i would be happy to hear it. in the meantime, i'll try to have a look, maybe there a security switch that disables the connector if the tablet is not "locked" in the dock though the two holes on the sides of the pin connectors.
Sorry for not having a solution but rather leaving more questions.
link to the cable just in case : https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B08SJBK6ZC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Have a nice day
EDIT : It actually does work out of the box, the positioning was wrong (and the pins have to be in the right position, you can't invert the pins so don't forget to try both sides, i got it wrong and the tablet does not seem to suffer from this mistake) as I was trying to hold it in place. So from what I can tell, you should be good to go with this cable or an other (I could hardly find any so i posted a link but feel free to use any as long as the space between the 2 pins is the same as the one in the link )

I am looking for a similar cable for probably a slightly different purpose. I also want to mount it on the wall but at the same time want to use the tablet as Alexa Echo Show. I have not managed to get the Alexa Echo Show mode on my M10 FHD tablet. On enquiring from Lenovo I was told that it works only when it is docked but the tablet did not come with a docking stating.
Are you using Alexa on your tablet? Does echo show works for you when charing using this cable with pogo pins?
TWIMC: If you stumble over an old Pebble Classic SmartWatch charger cable: the pins fit! After removal of the magnets I implemented it into a wooden mini-easel as a stand, used tooth picks for alignment, works nicely! But (BIG BUT) I wanted it to be charging my Lenovo M10 while using OTG - THAT DOES NOT WORK! If you insert the OTG cable, it switches off the Pogo pin charging. Some idiot engineer thought himself clever...
Alternative is looking for OTG adapters being able to charge simutaneously. rare, but available.

Google brought me here. I got a Belkin adapter ( https://www.belkin.com/usb-c-audio-charge-adapter/F7U081btBLK.html ) for this, but that doesn't work either. I had Just realized it had pogo pins so went looking for a solution. It seems this tablet is a real stinker where otg is concerned. It also will not work properly with my external desktop DAC over USB. For my next tablet I will have to do some research beforehand...

Is there any definitive solution to the usb-c port problem?

Guys there is a piece or tutorial that definitively solves the problem of the usb-c port of this device, I like it very much and I didn't want to get rid of it !!
redchilis said:
I've thought of many solutions, however, since my my USB-C port seems fine atm, I'm not fidgeting with it.
1st thing I tried was Wireless Charging.
This video above, gave me some hope, but the youtuber has not shared links to buy what worked for him and none of the high-end Qi Wireless Charging receivers I bought worked for me.
After researching a bit and trying multiple Qi Charging Receivers, I read somewhere, Wireless Charging receivers don't play well with phones that offer any type of fast charging, which our phones do.
2nd thing I tried is getting a magnetic cable, which looks something like the image below
{

However, the peice that went into the phone has quite a bit of thickness and felt if the phone were to ever fall on the charging port it would break the port and generally, I did not like the aesthetics of it, it was too thick. Check this video out if you are interested in it, it's for a similar phone (Video MP4 file)
3rd thing I considered was to DIY a battery case that would connect to the port and a cover that would be thick enough to cover the port and the battery case. Would then have an alternative charging method, like wireless or USB-C. I gave up on this as my port is fine as of now, since I bought a pre-owned phone, it's been working fine.
Currently, I only use an Amazon basics certified USB-C cable to charge the phone, I do not use the company supplied cable at all.
If you want to change the charging port yourself you can search on youtube you will find a video with reasonable knowledge on how to open up your phone and change the port yourself, like this one
The port itself at the time of writing this post costs 309 INR (maxbhi link)
Hope that helps!

there's none, you can fix it, but eventually, it's gonna broken again. The actual problem is the housing, it's put much pressure on the port so it wears so easily, especially when you're using your phone when charging, which most people often do even just for checking the notification.
In my opinion,
Change the port with the OEM original and replace that goddam USB cable that came with the phone,
That cable is the culprit, I use OnePlus dash cable
I was very luck to find a repair service that fixed the internal piece of hardware (I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
It took the guy approx. 2 hours to complete the job.
Note that he didn't replace the hardware, but fixed the original faulty component somehow instead.
If you order the OEM component from AliExpress or somewhere else and ask a technician to replace, it would take approx. 30 min.
After the job was done, the back of the phone was glued and kept strapped to the case with ribbons for half an hour.
Also I've bought a new cable, a highly recommended OEM one from Amazon. That was when the first signs of the problem emerged.
Now the fast charge is working again.
In the last few weeks of despair, I was applying pressure to the connector when attached to the port, by rising it or pushing it to the side, which only made things worse, since the internal component was absorbing all that pressure.
Don't do that. If the problem comes, try to replace the internal component asap.
One last piece of advice, don't charge and use the phone. Keep it quiet on a flat surface, like a table or chair.
I read somewhere so not sure of truths but.... the story said the problem was the fit being to loose and causing wear... The solution that the guy came up with was to put a small strip of cello tape carefully around the end of the USB c connector making the fit tighter... Seems like it could be a solution... I personally just keep changing the faulty bit.... The phones in a case so no need to professionally restick the back... Changing the part takes about five minutes
This is what I do after usb port is broken
Spoiler: Picture
You only need cutter blade and electricity solatip
So far it's work and my usb port not loose & broken again.
Hope that help

Hey there! OnePlus dash cable fits perfectly? Any issues so far?
I think there is no solution for this problem. I changed the usb-c board 5 times, the last one yesterday. I finally bought 5 more new, seemingly original boards from an Aliexpress seller, for about $ 16 in total. Here is the link to the article, for anyone interested:

Evolution / HDK Forester Golf Cart Touchscreen

Hello -
My golf cart has a 9" touchscreen that has very limited capability. I'd like to see if there's anything that can be done to enhance by maybe adding an app launcher and then adding a few better apps.
Based on the number I see inside the unit "zl201721508032.8", I think this might be a iMars or Jmance but I really don't know.
Any ideas on how to approach this? Can developer mode be enabled? I clicked around on the version but there's no response. I've connected my laptop to the USB and I see no serial port action.
thanks for any ideas.

I'm always a sucker for a good UART hunt.
Got a voltmeter? Got a USB UART?
Check the voltages on these three pins.
Mmm, I think this is a really low end device. I think that it's not Android at all.
1 GB flash and 64 MB RAM doesn't get you a lot of buzz these days.
Oh good eye on seeing those pins, I completely missed those. I'll give that a try. I've got a couple of the usb-uart things that I've used on routers.
The UI sure looks a lot like other Android auto tablets like that eBay auction and the ones in Jmance website so I was thinking it's Android.
Novice question, could that allwinner board be just the MCU part and the Android part/tablet is below the black plastic with the zl201721508032.8 stamp?

Nope. The white ribbon cable is the fixed pushbuttons on the left of the screen, the orange is the LCD, the black is the I²C interface for the capacitive touch sensor.

Mmm, I think this is a really low end device. I think that it's not Android at all.
1 GB flash and 64 MB RAM doesn't get you a lot of buzz these days.

I'm always a sucker for a good UART hunt.
Got a voltmeter? Got a USB UART?
Check the voltages on these three pins.

I finally got back to this. Flipping the board over, those pins and several others are labeled. Those 3 pins you mentioned (to the upper right of the 18V sticker in new photo) may not be a UART, they are labeled 3V3, GND, KEY1. Any idea what they may be?
The labeling on the 5 vertical pins seem to be a single wire interface module (SWIM) test point. A test module that I don't own.
And there are two groups that do look like UARTS. One in the bottom right and one in the middle below the 3 caps.
The bottom right didn't seem to generate any output but the middle one was quite yappy. I think it was outputting at 115200 but I saw nothing that looked like english text log output, no boot-up logs, I think it was all data. It did react to button presses, turn signals and such.
This was fun but I got no where and it doesn't look very capable or customizable. I think I'm yanking it out and replacing with an Android.
Thanks for your help
I'd think that the yappy one was it.
Did you try 921600 (the new high speed one) or even 38400.
Make sure it's all 8-n-1.

I'm pretty sure I tried 38400 but probably not 921600. I think I was using 8-N-1 but I will dbl check
