Good or bad idea?
I'm hoping the newer batches will be fixed since Sprint/HTC is taking so long to come up with a new stock.
The hardware issues like the screen peeling and stuff, will be covered by a silicone case that I'll have I believe.
And the software issues will be fixed soon hopefully.
What do you guys think?
just get it your going to love it, dont listen to all the naysayers some people just cant be pleased. the biggest thing that people are griping about is the fps lock, which unless your very anal about gaming and have to have everything be ridiculously smooth then i guess might bother you...it certainly has no effect whatsoever on my usage of my device or even the few games ive played on it....
to me watching something in 60fps just seems so fake, like its just TOO smooth, i was playing metro 2033 the other day and with all the settings at their max @1080p resolution i average about about 35 fps...i got to this one part (its like a on rails part where you carry this kid on your back) and the frame rate just jumps to like at least double what i was getting up to like 75fps and the game was just very disorienting...like i wanted the controls to react faster, the game was so smooth that it almost seemed like it lagged behind my controls... it was pretty strange...so anyway thats my whole thing, maybe its because im just used to playing games at 30fps... most games on consoles are 30fps and people dont caus a stink like they do here about them lol...
Oh yeah, sure. Don't listen to the naysayers who actually bought the damned phone.
Currently, the Evo is suffering from the 30fps cap and slow touch response. I recorded the following videos a while ago to demonstrate what I mean:
There is no such thing as being 'too smooth'. Look at devices like the iPhone and Galaxy S and say they're 'too smooth'. Just be aware that these issues do exist and may or may not be fixed by HTC in the near future.
Apart from that, however, I have absolutely no issues with the phone.

I see what you guys are talking about. The 30fps cap IS an issue for me since I'm a quality whore xD I live my menus to scroll smoothly and I like my games to be unchoppy, but I mean this phone is still the bomb lol. I'm going to order it as soon as I can find someone who has good credit. Being a student, I dont have credit, and so Sprint will not let me apply for a line T_T

Hah. Being a student, I sure hope you can afford the first bill, which is prorated .
But yes, this device is the best Android device currently on the market, and will continue to be one of the best for quite some time. Better yet, Sprint allows you to upgrade your phone a year into your contract with any plan $69.99 and above.

well, he is referring to it being pro-rated, meaning you will be billed for part of a cycle in addition to your regular billing cycle-- the part you use outside of it. not to mention activation fee, etc.. but I got out of mine.

ok I had no idea what pro-rated meant, so I researched. Is there any way to avoid these charges? like not use the phone for a few days or something?
No way to avoid the pro-rated charges unless you open the line on the first day of the month(billing cycle). And then you will have activation fee's, another 5 dollor charge to track your usage and that wont come off your bill until you pay every month on time for 18 months(appariently). Then you got taxes...... those all depend on your state and how they are billed, I got billed for city, county, and state sales tax... and even more money for activating a phone in my city and county... Basterds!
lol, the funny thing is. i dont have any credit, i have a saving account and have some carriers in the past. when i went to apply for sprint, i got declined for 2 lines. my girl ran her credit and got approved for 2 lines with 2 free blackberries,, she has one closed banking account and NO CREDIT WHAT SO EVER. i mean im not complaining,,, cough EVO.. but just had me buggin in radioshack lol
does everybody on Sprint have the same bill cycle (meaning same start/end day/date)?
it's weird cause i activated my 4 lines on June 10 and i was charged a prorated amount from June 10-12 and the full bill from June 13 and on; that's just nonsense and feels like they are just stealing that amount for no apparent reason when they could've easily just made the 1st month from the day of activation
I don't know how exactly the bill cycles work for sprint, I worked for At&t. But they started my bill cycle on the first, thats when my first bill is due..

T_T I was thinking I could just not call or text for the few days till the beginning of the billing cycle. and whaaaaat?! $5/mo just to check if I pay on time or not? that's horrible. makes me not want to get the Evo. If the phone bill is going to be expensive as hell just because of these retarded factors, I might as well buy an unlocked Evo, and use my at&t sim card in it.

You cant use any SIM cards with the Evo. It's a CDMA device, which means it doesn't have any support for those.

I don't have any credit either. I have multiple people sueing me, and a few overdue doctor bills on my credit. I have got declined for every credit card I have applied for.
And the $5 dollor charge has nothing to do with the evo, I think its something they put on all accounts, or well probably for people with horrible credit.
Really, with everything you getting on sprint, and its still a bit cheaper than any other company out there, for unlimited everything.
I wouldnt get one. I'm pretty disappointed with mine. At first it was neat, but now I'm kind of bored with it. There are 0 good games compared to what there was on the iphone. And the ones that are decent run like crap on the evo.

I predict every new smart phone from Sprint will have 4G and its 10 dollar up-charge.

I predict that every newer technology will be better than old technology and if you're always waiting for the new thing, you'll never get the new thing. Stop waving your e-penis. Buy the toys and tools you want. Yours isn't better than mine if I can do cooler things with it. Etc...
I have a Hero. I love it. I want an Evo. It'll be outdated soon. New stuff will come out and I'll want it. It will be outdated soon. Notice the pattern?

I doubt every new smart phone will - just because BlackBerry seems lazy.
Now in 2 years - yes every smartphone will...
BTW: How do you define smart phone? BB is not in my definition of smart...but it seems to be in everyone else's.
I'm glad I got new golf clubs for father's day instead of the Evo! I think I made the right choice. I am seeing something very nice like this in my Christmas stocking instead!
I can't stopping laughing.
This the phone I have waited for a long time.

agree.. i don't consider a BB a smart phone at all..
on a side note, why do people still cry over $10 extra for 4G??? so what if its not in your area right now.. chances are most people that don't have it in their area at the moment will travel to areas that do have the coverage, and sprint isn't gonna let u use it for free.. and besides.. it's only $10 a month.. try this, save yourself from eating a McDonalds value meal twice each month and you got your $10 covered. not really that big of a deal..

McDonals = $10 per trip for me....stupid mcflurries. I am a fat kid in a skinny kids body.
I never go to mcdonalds, and hardly ever go eat anywhere else for that matter.
Even if you travel somewhere with 4g, how long will most people be there to use it? Id rather them turn the 4g radio off and not pay the $10. I assume it would save battery power for those with no 4g in our area.

I may be going to the Evo, we'll see. Sprint offered me a different model phone finally and I'm going to go for the evo. Third hero from them and their repair/refurb people can't seem to get it right... They said I have to pay sales tax on it though, which I found amazingly strange.
I will never leave the Hero forums, though, that was what got me into Android in the first place and I really wish I could still have a hero...
How did you swing that? Im on my 4th defective hero and they told me they will not replace them anymore. That they can only do so many replacements per year. I have insurance too. Oh yeah and if you do get an evo, it will probably ship with the new patch that prevents root. No work around yet either!

Correct spelling is traitor.
And I was pissed enough to be willing to pay the ETF on this line and close my other brand new line if they didn't take care of the issue by sending me a different model phone due to the circumstances. I'e been with them for a little over 3 years now and always been good with my bills and such so they try to keep me happy, and I really do appreciate that. The guy said I could pick the phone so I checked out online and decided to go with the Evo even though I'll probably never get 4g. It's the only other phone comparable to the Hero and that is made by HTC, since I like the HTC product.
Only thing is, though, is that he said they'd be back in stock in approx 2 weeks... well... I leave for vacation on the 21st and if they're back in in exactly 2 weeks, that puts it at the 20th. Plus 2 days for shipping and I'll have a phone sitting outside my garage for 2 weeks.
Can someone who works for Sprint, like a rep I'd get a hold of if I dialed *2, let me know what the expected arrival date is for more Evo's, please? I really need to stay on top of this so I can get it if they come in earlier. I can't have that phone sitting outside for 2 weeks. I'd owe you one if you could do this for me. PM me or whatever!

ASL - Account spending limit --- your bill usually shows if you are part of the program. You also get a $4.99 fee / month on your bill if your not on auto-pay and part of the ASL program.
You also need to be in an area where its avail. -- its not avail everywhere, http://sprint.com/airave click where is it avail. Put your zip in.
Also don't just ask for one. That's rude. Explain that you don't have signal in your house, your diggin your new phones but dropped calls in home are worth the ETFs to you and the high cost if you can't get your signal in your house, and then see if they will help you out.

There is no way in hell you are going to get an evo from sprint and only pay sales tax. If you did you must be sucking someone off because they wanted to ship me another refurb hero, i told them to shove it. i talked to 6 people and spent 3hrs on the phone with them. one guy actually told me he could get me an evo but of course the dipshi* didn't note the account. i hate sprint with a passion. they told me in the end that they are giving evo's out to no one for free, if you want one you have to pay full price or wait until your upgrade and pay the difference. what a bunch of crap!
Oh well in a few months im sure i will be able to pick one up on craiglist for $150 or so.
FYI this would be my 4th replacement hero in 6 months.
I also didn't mean any offense towards the OP but im pissed right now! I even offered to pay the difference on the evo if they would push my upgrade status up.

Sprint.com is out of stock for them. Getting it replaced when they come back in stock, in about 10 days or so.
I called Sprint yesterday and asked about the new upgrade policy and told the guy I got my Evo in August. I asked if I would still be eligible to upgrade to the 3d in august after the policy change. To my surprise he said yes. I knew that I wasn't supposed to after the policy changes so I asked him to make a note on my account that he said I would get the upgrade this year and the policy change will not affect me until my next upgrade is due. He did it ( at least he said he did). So since I have this noted on my account do you think Sprint will go against his word and say that I can't get my upgrade. I think they are going to just have to eat it and give me the phone at new contract price. I hope I am right. I would like to hear everyones opinion ( especially sprint employees) . If they do not honor this could I just cancel my contract and pay my $120 etf and sign a new contract to get it at the discounted price? Thanks.
Just call again and see if they can locate that note. Make sure they gibe you the interaction number. If the note is present then they have to honor it

Speaking from experience, I HIGHLY doubt he actually created the note. 99% of the time they will just tell you that to get you off the phone. For future things like this, ALWAYS get it in writing. Tell them to email it to you, and DONT hang up until you get the email. I bet you 20 bucks, that if you call back, and rep wont be able to find this note.
Besides it doesn't make one bit of difference what that guy writes in his notes. Just because he typed it in doesn't mean it HAS to happen. I actually think this post is kind of stupid but I guess there will be a lot of these. You sound like a teenager. You are either eligible or you aren't. They aren't going to change it the day before the phone comes out just to screw you over.
A good way to do that is via the live chat. After the session ends, you get a transcript of your typed conversation, which includes the time, date, and everything both you typed. I have a copy of my last chat with them I'm saving, just in case. But I also agree with zone23, I don't know if they'll actually do whatever they said they would, they might tell you to go pound sand.

Hope, definitely not a teenager, I wish I still was. Im just somebody that doesn't care too much for being screwed over. I have given sprint my money on time every month for a year (in August) even though I use less than 500 minutes, 700 text, and 1Gb of data per month. I think with the money they make off me the least they can do is hold to their word and give me my upgrade.
Also as I had seen others mention he said that I would be eligible for the full $150 upgrade, not the $75 half upgrade.
I know that when I was working for [email protected] CS, if you noted something and told the customer they would get it, even if it was the wring thing to do. If they deny you if there is actually a note, ask to talk to a super visor, I can't even count how many times I've waived their upgrade due to similar situations like this.
Hopefully that was some useful input...

They aren't going to change it the day before the phone comes out just to screw you over.

Actually, if it's notated it must be honored, period. If he notated he would get his upgrade in August, Sprint will honor it, unless it's some crazy off the wall impossible thing like "customer will get credit of 10,000 (where the comma should have been a period and it should have read 100.00)

Oh yeah I definitely know what you mean. I had a situation alot like that with Directtv. Now I have dish network and will never look back. I would be pissed. If I were you I would try doing what I did and call before April 1st and have them note it if they say you can get the upgrade. Worse case scenario is you wont get it and you will just be in the same boat as if you didn't call. Good luck. Hope you can get it worked out.

Already being discussed:

And no, they don't "allow" it...it's against the TOS here too, but they haven't done anything to enforce it yet.

Yeah I saw that after I posted. To late by then. But sprints also the only carrier not banning the apps. Close enough to allowing it for me
even if they did some aosp roms have it built in, can't stop that lol
Ehhh.... some more changes are coming to data plans on connection cards hopefully alleviating some of the people that use their phone for tethering. A lot of people say "I don't like paying twice for data" but at the same time, you're paying for data on your phone, not data on your phone, to your laptop, home computer, joe's iPhone and your sons PSP.

I should hope a single tethered device could still be capable, but when handing out multiple feeds I see where the questioning and bull**** could arise. I'm not going to argue semantics but being able to use the phone to tether, say my CR-48 - at crucial times could be important. It's not worth the mobile hot spot billing in my case, I have no intention of setting up other people or multiple devices. If I couldn't afford home internet service, for whatever reason, I would just deal with it for the time being.
I know trying to justify it isn't realistic, nor is rationalizing, but if they could somehow say, 'Hey, that one device - hopefully yours - that's cool.' That would be, uh, cool. Far-fetched, sure.

I think a pay-as-you-go tethered plan would be easier for people that only need it at some crucial times like you said. For example 1 hour for $1 or $0.50?
Hmm, possibly. But what does 1 hour constitute? Free reign? I could see maybe that being more reasonable ... I rarely break out the tether, and while - honestly - I could probably get away with doing as much on my phone, as it stands with these chrome notebooks you NEED that data for the most part ... I could see that being more reasonable than a measly 'pay out your ass for 250MB of data' deal.
Are you 'not really saying,' but sort of suggesting, some revisions are coming up? Not going to push any info outta ya ... but, you do seem to be pretty up to speed with the ish.
I dunno how I feel about all these other little charges, and without somehow tackling the issue people will just continue to abuse, thus - naturally, jeopardizing all of us. I just don't know. I'm also drunk. So that doesn't help with my 'brain dealings.'
edit: yeah, I guess that is what you were suggesting / saying
i think your suggested handling of such a use / charge would be more legit than dealing with it in other fashions ... a direct billing of the account? not another additional charge? at most maybe 1GB of use for that hour? which, for emergency situations might be pushing it ... but I sort of like that idea over having to deal with a charge I may not get full use of - or need on a month to month basis.

I would say more like free reign for the hour or 30 minutes while you are tethering for that $1. Obviously a person that uses it a lot would rather pay $39.99 for the month for unlimited tethering but a person like you an I that uses tethering maybe once every 2 months for 2 hours maximum I would pay the $2 for those $2 as needed.
I'm sure if Sprint chooses to enforce this, someone will find a way around it. Personally, I don't want to pay $30 to use tethering. The only time I use it is when I'm out and about with my wi-fi only kindle and need to download a book. Just trying to save some dough in these hard times

A pay as you go option. Would be nice and would certainly be a solution and would bring in alot of revenue. Then again the majority of users dont really root so they wouldnt have to worry about people getting around it.
I'd easily cough up a $1 for 30-60 minutes of tethered data in dire situations. Seems a little cheap, TBH. But for direct billing and crucial situations that would be huge if it meant avoiding some crazy mandatory charge and locking out of possible situations. I get this talk wouldn't necessarily prevent tethering as a whole, but it is usage like that that could potentially change the nature of the Sprint plans.
Change will eventually come, I just hope Sprint can continue to somehow manage it in a proper and non drastic measure.
It all comes down to end user - erm - usage, but for people like me that could potentially be reasonable.

Tons of people would opt for that option just like there are tons of users that pay the $39.99. $1 for 1 hour is cheap but a lot of people would get lost in the hours.... i.e. 5,000 people just used it for 2 hours - it only cost those people $2 but that's $10,000 that Sprint just made.... huge profit margin. And oh yeah, let's not forget that was made in 2 hours only.

Actually, I think $1 an hour is too expensive. The monthly plan is $30 a month, or $1 a day. My understanding is that as it is today, you can call them up and have them add it, then have them remove it later that day, and it prorates to the day. I don't know if it provisions instantly or if you need to plan ahead.
I haven't done this, so I'm not sure if that's all correct. But a rep did tell me that when I asked about it while changing over to the Evo. If it's true, $1/day is the price we have available now. Maybe they don't really intend for people to add/remove it that way to really only pay $1/day on the days they use it, but my understanding is you can do that. One reason I haven't tried it at least for me is the hassle. I'm not sure if it's just because I'm on SERO Premium, but I can't add and remove this online. I'd have to call twice (or perhaps it can be done via chat). If we could add and remove it easily from the website (accessed via the phone, of course) or even directly from within the app, it'd be really convenient.

That is a hassle
Just have the app report the time it has been on. For people who use it occasionally 1$ Would be really nice and cheap and they wouldnt have an issue with using it. Of course for th whole day charge maybe 2$ a day for pay as you go if the post paid is 1$ a day.

This is true, but the hassle is beyond what people want. Most people don't want to call their company. What if you call to remove it, then later on the day need it again, gotta call again. Sprint closes at 1am EST time so if you need it at that time, you're SOL.
$1 an hour is expensive, but inexpensive for people that rarely use it. As I said, I use it maybe 1-2 hours once every 2-3 months. That's an extra $2 every 2-3 months, not that big a deal and no calling involved.

Exactly. Think of those that pay for the hotspot functionality because they don't necessarily 'know better.' Might not be the best way of putting it, and at that, maybe some don't mind as they can justify it. In terms of the $1 for an hour - for example - if you don't even reach 30GBs a month then that could be appealing. But, in that regard, take into account whether or not said individual just tethers to his own single device and not others and blah blah variables variables blah blah blah
For many I could see that being a reasonable approach to somehow trying to effectively issue outside data usage of the device. Sure, some might argue that if you are only tethering your OWN device then how should that be an outside expense ... as Sprint - and others - external data usage and tethering plans touts the multi user / individual usage ... it's almost like insurance plans and how, as a whole, you are paying for the service as an entirety and you don't expect everyone to take full advantage of the 'plan.' Sure, maybe backwards, maybe not entirely relevant but - in a way - sort of. Drunk, as said.
But I could definitely see people like myself actually seeing that angle as being a positive one to help combat, or even offset, the 'abusers.' And some of the 'abusers' are not in fact abusers, but people just working around the hotspot feature who can't justify the price for their usage of tethering.
Very interesting. Not sure if that made any sense. Made some sense to me, if only slightly. But I get what you are saying and that would totally seem like a Sprint thing. Sprint really, and truly, is the last of the major carriers here and it would totally seem appropriate. Not to suggest the people finding workarounds, albeit simple ones - if possible, wouldn't happen but I could see a lot of people agreeing to something of that nature fas a showing of support. Seems reasonable. If I was paying for the hotspot feature I would really have to go out of my way to have myself, and others, use that proverbial 30GBs of usage to that ratio of coinage to data. If that last sentence even made sense.
I could see that working, and in turn, keeping Sprint in reasonable check with the people so long as honest and less-data-tethering-heavy-users went that route.
*should have proofed that ... I dunno if that made any sense ... at all.

Reliable could mean no downtime, or more consistant download speeds. More coverage etc..
Downtime: is #1 isuse (Data not working at all)
Consistant: I get any were from my sig to 3-4DL and 2UP. So that #2
Coverage: Ok they win, but to me that does not do a lot of good if 1 and 2 are messed up.
Never had 4g drops. 100% solid service here. In Los Angeles area.

Good for you then. I know they had 2-3 nation-wide 4g outages in dec.( I was pissed about 2 of them.) I wish I lived in LA, the PD and internet is better there.( Ok the PD part was more about the movies then caring how good it is in real life, but still.)
What 4G phone do you have?
I got the RAZR thinking it had the best 4G LTE built in. ( The G nexus seemed very bad and I know a guy who works there who informed me before it come out)
Here where I live Verizon is pretty damn fast. But why do you need a data connection that fast?
Battery technology needs to improve to power these new devices that eat data. I'm happy with my 14megs on TMobile.
Plus Verizon is over priced. Funny I say that because I just got a part time gig at a Verizon store.

AT&T Has the 99.9% there, but just about never gets 10. I had no idea t-mobile had good speed like that.

How many months do you have left on your contract? If you're not happy with their speeds or customer service, why don't you leave? At the worst case, can't you call retentions, tell them whats up and see if they can add extra stuff to your plan? I would figure dropping them would be more cost effective then suing but I don't know if its just American culture to sue whoever for whatever but thats just my opinion.
I have in till 2013 and It would cost me about 350 for ETF. There is no stuff that would make up for there fail. I have never sued before and I know your kind don't like to do that, but I think if your not geting what they put on TV then thats BS.
Every one here loves them to no end and they get a way with what ever. Not any more if I have anything to say about it.
"my kind" just doesn't see the point in suing a billion dollar company over something like this. Mind you doesn't mean I'm right, but I would just move my business elsewhere. Rogers in Canada was raping me so I said fudge it, paid the $300, went to Telus and would recommend them to anyone purely based on customer service. I just don't see much happening if you sue them by yourself, if you had bunch of other people in the suit with you sure, I'm sure your chances would increase. But its not like they are gonna radically change the way they do business over your lawsuit...but I guess it starts with one case at a time...in the end I would just say eff you Verizon and I would peace out and move to another company.
1) I know you must think all of the U.S.A sue every one like the lady sueing the fast food place, but it's not true.
2) I don't want my C rating messed up just because some company can't live up to the ADs they bast on TVS I HAVE TO SEE EVERY TIME I GO OUT ANY WERE WITH TVS.(eating out and so on.)
3) I like Canada and wish we had heath care like yours.
4) I likely will just say "fudge it", because I can pay it till the end any way.
don't get me wrong, I don't think every American sues someone, but there is an over saturation of frivolous lawsuits within the states. Anyways, its really up to you if you want to sue or not, I don't blame you either way and I hope everything works out for you. Power is with the customer, not the carrier so if you're not happy with the service, eff them.
I have an Infuse 4G on ATT. 4G has always been stable and fast for me. I've gotten up to 15mbps download speeds off it.
I live in SoCal if that helps judge the signal/service over here.
I know it is and thats why I say the big red is full of it. Last night I droped data 3 times and fell back to 3g two times. There phone CS is nice, but not so smart. I tryed to tell them what USB is and they keeped on talking about WIFI. Any way I will be geting a new phone by the end of the year.

First of all, you expect 99.9% uptime from a cellular network? That's absurd, especially when carriers oversell in more densely populated/metropolitan areas. You'll never get 99.9% uptime from anything other than a leased landline, and you'll pay a premium for it. AT&T doesn't have that kind of reliability--no carrier does. It seems like you just like to complain for the fun of it, but let me assure you you'll end up farther in the red suing Verizon than you would just taking the ETF and moving to another provider.
oh yea, I have NEVER droped data with AT&T so thats 100% up time. Now I am not saying that it should never fail, but I bet if you out places and droped data 50% of the time even with 3-5bars/5 then you would be mad. It drops data in my home with 3-4bars and about -85dbm. Now perhaps I should have not used 99.9% as uptime, but I kind of think that it shuold not be so hit and miss.
I don't "complain" for fun, becuase I know every thing has it's bug's, fails and so on. I have about 4-7 vid's now showing the some thing. It verys alot and I only film about 1/2 to 1/3 of all the data drops.
I bet you work for them trying to go back on there ads. They are the most aragunt CO I have ever seen and that says alot, becuase apple used to be #1 to me. AT&T is in my top 5, but your CO read verizon is #1. I meen they don't seem to care at all if any one left, becuase 10 more will come in, becuase of all the brain-washing TV ads they run. They are just like apple, but are even more full of it. Oh yea about me being in the red, I should win this case easy in a few weeks when I have made more videos showing how full of it they are. I should have about 20-30 videos or more by them at the rate they drop data. I won't even need a rep, becuase I will do that my self. Plus after the AT&T won his case it should be next to a shoe in.
I will not have a dent on my CR becuase some CO can't give what they basely yell and screem on TV ads and thier stores.
P.S In case you don't work for them, well then I guess you did not get it or just don't like geting what you pay for.
Edit: Well I guess I won pottedplant73. and 99.9% up time= down for about 15min a day every day of every week of every mouth of every year, so I don't think think it's "absurd".

Yeah, you got me--just because I'm pointing out problems with your argument means I work for Verizon. It's all a massive conspiracy against you, obviously. Personally, I'd never bother with Verizon. They're currently the most expensive carrier in the U.S. and that's saying something. People pay absurd prices for tiny amounts of 3G/4G data just because the convenience factor has outweighed the economics of it. When it comes down to it, all the wireless carriers we have suck in one aspect or another. They all gouge, they all engage in deceptive business tactics, they all lie, and they all give you less than you had before, and expect more money. This is what made me decide to go month to month on the cheapest plan I can stand.
I encourage you to sue, though. Or better yet, get a class action lawsuit going. I'd love to see Verizon eat some crow.
