32A Semikindasorta Rooted? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi All.
This might be a really dumb question, but I can't find anything in the forums that looks similar, so here goes.
I have an HTC Magic 32A bought in Bangkok, Thailand (where I still live), and when I got it, the salesperson offered to upgrade it from the stock no-sense cupcake to sense UI for me on the spot. Everything was working fine except for bluetooth (1.5's fault, not the ROM) and the GPS. I came back a month later and the shop upgraded it again to fix the GPS, this time telling me that the last guy had put a custom ROM in for me, but now I have the official ROM.
So now I have:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.76.2007 (SAPP 10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-6.35.07.29
My Build number is 3.04.401.2
From the looks of it, I have a rooted, official HTC ROM, right? I'd like to get 2.1 (perhaps CM5-Release-2.6.32.9-kernel, so I don't have to downgrade the radio and risk a brick), and I can boot to recovery (Ra-hero-v.1.5.2), but I'm worried that things aren't working right because despite all of the above, my phone isn't acting like a normally rooted phone.
Specifically, I can't wifi-tether (the app says I need root), and when I open a terminal emulator, I can su but when I tell it to "reboot recovery" it says "not permitted!"
That said, I can make a nandroid in recovery so I'm guessing everything is fine and that for some odd reason I'm only being denied root access at the application level..?
Is this right? Can I start wiping and flashing?
Thanks in advance for your patience and kind assistance.

Help with "Factory Reset"

OK, a little history, I have a HTC Magic, which I traded my HTC Dream for (just after the whole Rogers 911 thing). The person I traded wanted a Dream, and well, I wanted a Magic so I could root it and get the better ROM's working. Well, lo and behold, I get the Magic and find out it's already rooted and running a 2.0 ROM, which I like very much.
Here is my problem, I've had it for a few weeks now and while doing trial and error with which apps I like, it's gotten a little unstable and I'd like to bring it back to "Factory" values. I've tried running the "Factory Reset" from the Privacy menu, but it just reboots and no change made. So, the question is, can I run the reset from the Fastboot menu?
Ohhh, and what ROM is this (see attached picture)?

So I sucked it up and just did a Wipe/Factory Reset from the recovery menu. The image is still good, just back to factory. Documentation would go a long ways...
MotoCAL.apk is now installed and working this time, now I *really* like this ROM....

[Q] Recovery Mode Involuntarily Restarting

Hello...
Fairly new here...
Also new to this rooting/rom business...
but, to the point.
I have a Rogers Magic 32A, with the stock Rogers rom.
my fastboot specs are

I am using the universal androot app, and running ROM Manager.
Whenever I boot into recovery, it either freezes after a few seconds, or resets the phone back to the first splash screen, and continues to work as normal (no bricking or any of that jazz.)
So anyway, my question is...
Does anyone know why it's doing this?
I got it to flash Cyanogenmod 6.0 once, but it didn't actually install.
Do I need a different radio and SPL?
I've tried searching, and I found nothing... but if there is already a thread with this issue, I'll gladly revert to that, and delete this thread.
TL;DR
-Phone is involuntarily restarting when I go into recovery mode
-Running stock Rogers rom, ROM manager, rooted with universal androot app
-New to android customization
-Am I doing anything wrong?
Thanks for reading.
I have the same problem!!
What I can do to fix it?
I'm really scared ...
the problem likely is you are loading the ebi1 recovery (magic 32a running 3.x radio) on you "hero like" magic (magic 32a running 6.x radio)
The hero recovery will work but you may find few roms.
I'd reccomend these rooting instructions
The process will work from the top I believe but since you ran androot after placing the files onto the phone you can skip to where I run exploid (with the seceetlol password) and run 'su' instead of exploid.
Once you have a 3.x radio with working rom and recovery if you want to checkout rom manager you can hopefully with less issues and if an issue happens you can always flash a recovery via fastboot.
I did end up fixing my issue.
Great Big Dog on the androidforums helped me out...
I tried to look for my thread that I posted on the androidforums, but I guess it got deleted...
pretty much... I followed GBD's quick root guide for the post 911 update for rogers magics, with a tiny bit of a switch for flashing the amonRA rom.
I can't remember exactly what it was, and I really wish that thread didn't get deleted.
And I can't link in any posts, so I can't really help you out.
I usually always just suggest installing a fresh RUU, especially if you don't know what you're doing... like me.
you can probably find one on the htc website.

[Q] Updating to 2.1 from CyanogenMod 1.4

This is what I get from the "three androids on skateboard" screen:

With the Rogers updates, they only work if you're going from the stock ROM, which I removed a long time ago. I believe I need to update the radio and SPL. I realize there are FAQs and troubleshooting guides but nothing I've found has helped and I don't want to brick my phone by taking a wild guess. I am completely lost on changing my Radio and SPL and updating to Android 2.1, so if anybody could walk me through I would really appreciate it. I've been stuck with Wi-Fi only and an outdated version of Android for a long time and it's time I did something to fix it. Thanks to anybody that can help.

You need to flash via recovery(if you have custom one), eng spl 1.33.2010, to have fastboot commands. End then you need eyegor's radio switcher to flash new radio and spl for sense rom, and then you flash capys rom rogers
How might I "flash via recovery"? I am unsure how to actually perform this without bricking my phone. Like I said, it's been a while since I've messed with it. I have downloaded recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img, update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2010-signed.zip, and the Radio Switch GUI v4. I'm willing to take a shot at it, with the worst case scenario being me having to get a new phone, but I honestly don't know where to start. All of the guides that I see aren't very specific and assume that the user already knows what they're doing. I know the usual advice is "if you can't do it yourself, you shouldn't be doing it" but I've not got much to lose here, and a lot to gain.

Little help - HTC Magic 32A Rogers

Hello,
I am kind of new to this whole modding thing so I am googling stuff and searching a whole bunch of stuff but it is just leading me in circles.
Allow me to first of all explain my phone. It has the 2.1-update1 from Rogers on it.

And I want to put Yoshi Froyo (or any good android 2.2).
So I looked at a bunch of articles and started following one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756918) and I got my phone rooted (with superuser permissions and all that jazz).
Okay cool, so now I need a recovery image. I installed the one listed (Recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img) and then I restarted my phone and went into recovery just to make sure it worked, and it did.
Okay so now I went to the thread and read it all and found some instructions
"-Make sure you have the .27.08 or .28.25 radio and .0013(d) spl... if not see extras...
-Superwipe twice
-Recovery wipe the list twice
-install ROM
-Enjoy ^__^"
So now I know I don't have a .27.08 radio and I don't know what spl I have, but I assume I don't have that one either. So I go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909900 as it said and read it, but here is where I become confused.
Do I need to downgrade to 1.5 or 1.6? Or can I do it from 2.1? I tried following (http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-unroot-your-mytouch-3g/) and the SAPPIMG.nbh came up invalid, so then I tried another one and it also came up invalid.
So here is my question, do I need to downgrade in order to install a custom rom? I've read a bunch of conflicting material and I don't have any desire to brick my phone. Some say I do some say I don't.
Any help? thanks!
Well first of all you have a diff radio then most of us cause of rodgers. And the 2708 is a dream radio not magic same with the spl you mentioned. As long as you have root you can custom rom.
And I would recommend cm6.1 stable I find it more stable then yoshi's right now I like yoshi's but I think it still has a little way to go.
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA Premium App
I know it's a magic cause it does not have a keyboard. I bought it with cupcake on it and then I got the Rogers Sense UI Rom update to android 2.1-update1 and then I got the 911 fix.
Edit: I got HBOOT-1.76.2007 with S-OFF on my phone by following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756918
Now I am trying to get the 3.22 rom on it and when I load up fastboot usb it shows the device in my device manager "Android Bootloader Interface" but it won't show up in fastboot.
nvm I had everything I needed already, I simply put on CM6 and it worked.

since yesterday, i'm reading the forum and try to understand how to upgrade this 1.5 rom to a 2.2 froyo rom
the only thing i could to actually is to install through linda file manager the 1.5.2H revovery.
I see for upgrading to cyanogen 6 or ( if you know a better rom), i need to upgrade the radio and SPL to 6.35.10.18 Radio and 1.76.2007 but i'm really lost with all the versions and i don't know anymore what to do
can please someone launch me on the right path to try to flash this magic ?
thanks a lot and have a nice sunday

....................
ok. i begin to get something but i can't use fastboot because i think it's due to the fact that my magic is not detected from the pc(unknown device).
i just could, through the recovery mode, install the zip 1.33.2010
and i got now :
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H INSTEAD OFF SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
hboot-1.33.2010 (SAPP10000) INSTEAD OFF hboot-1.33.0009 SAPP10000

Fix permissions of market app. They must be same like other system apps have.
hello thanks for your reply.
i suppose, you mean fixing the permissions one android market is installed ? and if it is the case, which app do i need to use to fix the permissions ? or can i maybe connect in ssh or an another way to explore/navigate the root folders ?
thanks a lot Strongino
With Root Explorer you can do it easy.
Don't forget about button 'Mount R/W' before fixing. Folder /system/app must be in r/w mode.
BTW, FroyoRider has market! As it has CM-core, so google apps packed in other package...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6637597&postcount=1
Look for gapps-mdpi-tiny-20101020-signed.zip
And flash it from recovery.
No need to install market manually...
oooh thank you Strogino !!
i will have a look once i get home thanks for the light and i will try the package héhé
see you later lol
Many thanks Strongino, it worked like a charm
to be honest, i'm an iphone addict and Android seems to become mature and 2012 will be the android year. The market begin to contain most of my iphone apps and i like the way Android works
i'm just very sad now because with my micro sim and the adaptor, i broke the pins of my htc magic and it doesn't detect anymore my sim card i hope there is a way to chage that part to be able to use it again ((
thank you for your light and have a nice evening

The conventional way is to start with a Golden Card.
Then the Europe RUU with superuser permission.
Then the SPL/Recovery.
Then the ROM's you like.
