So I'm wondering what everyone's getting as far as 3G and 4G speeds.
I'm trying to debate from friends on another forum about Sprints Data Speeds being better than AT&T's and well, me only having 2 bars and no 3G at my house makes it a hard sell.
My speeds when I got a lil 3G were:
Down: 692
Up: 592
I get anywhere from 1.0 MB/sec to 1.5 MB/sec with 3G down. My up speeds are always horrible.
My up speed normally passes my down. How weird is that?

Exactly. what we are ACTUALLY talking about is Megabits. NOT Mebibytes. And no, that isn't a typo. A Mebibyte is 1024 Kibibytes. A Kibibyte is 1024 bytes.
So until I see 8 Megabits/s download...

I'll tell you what speeds I get on 3G. Speakeasy.net speedtest to the closest server (Chicago) gives 1.7Mbps down and 400Kbps up.
my 3g 4g speeds
3G 1.15 down 0.65 up
4G 2.91 down 1.01 up
in Mbps
im in Dallas , Texas
I tested the other day and posted a video on youtube with my differences in Clarksville, MD. I got practically NO difference.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqbE1M1liFU
But today I was in Germantown, MD and turned on 4G (an area that isn't even suppose to have 4G yet according to sprints site) and got 3Mbps so it varies from place to place by quite a bit.

I already told you in pm. Mbps is different from MBps.
1 MBps = 8 x 1 Mbps.
Check wikipedia if you don't believe me.
Lancaster, Pa
4G
5.6Mbps down
1.2Mbps Up
Mounds View, MN (10-15 miles north of Minneapolis)
3G: 2.01Mbps down / 0.64Mbps up
I get 15mb/s download on my wifi
and about 1.3mb/sec on 3G
4G here in the suburbs of atlanta is about 5mb/sec
pretty good
Buffalo Grove, IL
3G: 674Mbps down / 647Mbps up
4G: 3152Mbps down / 1037Mbps up
I run this test everywhere I go, and generally I get about 350-800Mbps down and 450-1000Mbps up on 3G, while 4G is more erratic and can go anywhere from 300 to 3500Mbps down and 600-1000 Mbps up.

I just broke 6Mb/s, go figure the area I achieved this amazing speed isn't even listed to have 4G. See Map
Originally I had 3Mb/s in Chicago and now I only get 1.5Mb/s in the office.
Nice! I assume that was outside? I still haven't tried out my 4G outside where it is supposedly better. I know the signal sucks indoors.

Dont have a screen, but got 8.14 while tethering to my laptop and downloading a torrent file. i consistently get 4-5 mbs per sec. while downloading using wifi tether on my laptop. I've noticed that in general my scores use the speedtest app aren't quite as good as it seems the bandwith ramps up after a little bit of usage. Ofcourse it fluctuates throughout, but I've noticed some pretty good speeds while i was downloading an 800 meg torrent file. The file took about 20 minutes to download which i consider pretty good for a completely wireless data transmission.

those are such great speed and as i posted in another thread, one of my 4g speed tests resulted in 63kbps down and 924kbps up and i had 3 full bars at the time....i wonder if some these units dont have some sort of damage because really the best ive gotten was 2769 up and 865 down and i live in fresno tx which for some odd reason (its a small small town) its almost saturated in 4g

I ran tests with speedtest.net but I don't know enough to understand the results. Can someone point me to a good reference on EDGE/3G/wireless speeds? Or, just tell me, what do you think of these numbers. Is this slow, fast, average or what?
I'm in SF and chose the SF server:
3G Down: 979
3G Up: 1323
Wireless Down: 4402 kbps
Wireless Up: 3175 kbps
My 3g speed is actually better than your wireless speeds. Your location and of course how much the 3g network is being used in your area by others will contribute to slower speeds. But that still does seem fairly slow for 3g, maybe high traffic bogging down the network at the time you tested? Have you run any other tests?
I haven't run any other tests. Can you recommend any other tests?
Also, just for context, I ran the test from inside an old apartment building in a dense neighborhood between 8p and 10p.
that's pretty terrible
I get about 3.7meg consistantly down, 600k up in bentonville arkansas
speeds are alot lower than what i see in seattle, but on par with what i saw in most of O and Ca on a recent road trip.
I meant another speed test using the speedtest.net app, that would probably be the one of the worst times to run a test probably when theres the highest traffic. Just be sure you have a good signal when you run tests.
I just ran two more tests with speedtest.net, 10p PT. This time I made sure I had a decent signal (didn't pay attention last time).
3G up: 2226
3G down: 597
3G up: 1.04 Mbps
3G down: 1.05 Mbps
Honestly, the speed/performance has never bugged me or caught my attention because it was slow. But, what I'm gathering here is that I'm getting some pretty ****ty speeds, comparatively.
In Chicago we are only getting 1mb down 600-850 up....pisses me off...if tmobile doesnt raise it I need to consider att or sprint galaxy s....store claims speed in Chicago way behind rest of network and will get much better...i dont know if I can trust tmobiles network...is 3 mb common on tmobile 3g hspa like I have seen a few people claim in nj

This is a good illustration, you hear a lot of people complaining about the lack of HSPA+ support in the NS, but until I hear of people consistenly getting 7.2 on their devices, then will their complaints be warranted. I got 4.2 in Sherman Oaks.

No. I didn't mean to say that HSPA+ is capped at 7.2mbps, I was just saying that 5 mbps < 7.2... which the Nexus S and other non-HSPA+ devices' cap is at 7.2.
But yeah devices that supports HSPA+ (marketed as 4G) its 21mbps (theoretically)

support for HSPA+ is more of a future-proof feature and currently its not that important, but people that buy Nexus S usually keep it for a while and future-proofing is important especially that 4G phones are already available for cheaper price.

Oh hai, tethering
I do think that "4G" is just a marketing term really, and speed is relative. On our phones, a browser on 2Mbps will load just as fast as 5Mbps. As will Youtube and anything else that we do. Speed only makes a difference to those who tether IMO.

Well, just to be clear, kbps and kb/s are the same thing (as is kbit/s), at least according to my understanding and Wikipedia's entry on the subject. All three are obviously different than mb/s, and of course our phones are usually measured in Kb/s and Mb/s, which is different than the small k/m measurement.
Clear as mud for many, right?

764 down, 642 up. 4g wasn't much better, but I wsas surprised it even connected at home (never had before). Not sure how accurate the app is tho... the instant results where all over the place with 4g speed bursting over 3Mbps for a fraction of a second.
Edit: 1 bar 4g, 2-4 bars 3g.
Edit 2: somethings definately not right... kinda doubt its the modem. I ran the test on wifi, and the best I got as 6433Kbps down & 1514Kbps up... I have 12x1.5 uverse and a test on my laptop yielded 10Mbps/1.5Mbps off the same server.

Are you sure that you're not being throttled for going over your data cap? Those speeds are super low. Like the other reply I regularly pull 8mbps down and 3mbps up.
Sounds like your over your cap. No other reason that should be happening unless you have no bars and are in a basement.

No, that's not throttled speeds. I was throttled and consistently got around 0.07 Mbps down and up.
I can see these 8 Mbps down speeds being plausible if you live in a metropolitan area, but if you live out in the middle of nowhere like me, the best download speed I have gotten is around 3 Mbps, but typically around 1.3-1.5 Mbps.

I see my best speeds in the suburbs, with fewer users. My slower speeds happen in places like Seattle with tons of people on the network obviously. I believe just a generally slow area giving 1.5mbps ish, but there's something wrong when he's getting only 0.40mbps
I am now testing in the suburbs as I'm visiting home from college.
Also keep in mind signal also plays a large role. I was just downstairs where my signal was -103 dBm, and my download speed was about 1.8 Mbps. Just went upstairs, signal was about -89 dBm and download speed was about 4.0 Mbps (measured twice at each location). Interestingly, both were with UTMS connections.
Wow, -103! The phone has no connection at -113! Eek.
