Use VzW towers for better 3G - Hero CDMA General

Testing ATM, this sounds interesting =)

i'm gonna install speedtest and see hwo bad my internet is right now.

my speeds are 600 up and 600 down with 137 ping
i think i'll stay as is.

Went from
0.5 mbps down
0.3 mbps up
-98 signal
60665prl
To
1.0 mbps down
0.9 mbps up
-65 signal
01337 prl
Well I'm sold.

I was using this method and found that it also helps resolve ring lag. However it does have its bugs.
1. no*2 which is no big deal
2. when dialing a number that does not require an area code normally, now it does.
3. when using the sprint internet app it made me sign in as if I was not on the sprint network. Which was weird but also not a big deal.
I am not sure about the bill thing either. When #3 happened it got me a little worried so I switched back to the official PRL.

It varies from place to place. I am in a large Verizon area so this works for me. But my signal jumps up and down as well as it won't hold a steady data connection. It's great when it works, but it's not a usable option for me due to my location. And several people have reported sign in failures. I am one of those. It will randomly say "Sign In Failure" and it's quite annoying.

Anyone want to try SprintTV and see if they can get a channel listing?

could someone please upload it to xda? it keps dling as a text file lmao

What is supposed to happen when you dial ##775#?
Nothing happens for me; when I hit send, i get a Verizon wireless message about unable to complete call.
Any suggestions?

Download and click save. Move to sd card. Unmount sd card. dial ##775# and wait and a screen will pop up. Move the keyboard down and select the sd card option then u will see the prl. select it and then press menu and commit changes. The phone will restart and you will have your new prl.

Ok I just did this and update profile/prl are now gone from my about phone /update software menu

Dumb question but does this help with voice reception? or is that entirely separate?

Almost gave me a heartattack when everything changed to Verizon stuff and then wouldnt switch back. I'm not on Sprint sooo I assume that the whole sharing of towers w/o roaming will not work.
You should put a disclaimer in there that only people on Sprint should do it...'course I could be wrong.

I seem to be getting better reception for voice but no improvement with data.

Please don't tell me I'm first to notice the prl is totally 1337...

Prl "00000"...uh oh...

After updating the first OTA(June),when I go to Settings, it tells me the PRL version is "00000" and when i connect to QPST,click "read from phone",it says "prefered roaming list receive failed".
i tried to use CDMA workshop,QXDM 2.08 ,QPST and "##PRL#" to upload the PRL,but when i go to settings,it still says the PRL version is "00000".Ah man, help me please
Can you just do *228 option 2, are you able to dial out?
i'm able to dial out but unable to 3G...
the PRL version is still '00000" after i did *228 option 2...
Try this PRL it's a SprintVZW hybrid PRL
Place it on your SD Card:
##788 pass 000000 then apply it
I didn't make the PRL but I am running it.

yes, it allows your phone to pick the best tower regardless if its VZW or Sprint.
I tried that prl and it put a flashing triangle over my signal bar. Is this normal?

Ok, explain how this will help someone who lives in a known low service area who is not rooted. I have to use a network extender to get minimal coverage.

Not quite. It allows the user to manually force their phone onto the Sprint network. It's not automatic and requires interaction from the user.
i tried to upload this prl, unfortunately it doesn't work...my phone still tells me "00000"...
hi! Were you able to fix the "00000" PRL issue? I am experiencing the same thing on my EVO 4G. My phone is always in roaming mode as a result.
For Incredible user stuck with 00000 PRL, you might want to try programming your phone instead of updating roaming. That is dial *228 and option 1 for program. It won't trash your settings, though I am not sure about root.
For the Sprint Evo user "hijacking the thread" , not sure what the Sprint alternative for programming is, but that is what I suggest.
were you guys able to get rid of the roaming problem with the plr stuck on 00000 I'm having this problem and I don't know what else to try thanks.
anyone.......

phone stuck on digital roaming. ##786# forces close unable to reset PRL version is "00000" and when the phone is connected to QPST,and tried to read from the device it says "prefered roaming list receive failed".
CDMA workshop,QXDM 2.08 ,QPST and "##PRL#" to upload the PRL does not work to upload prl to the phone I can't believe there is no way to fix this I now have two phones with the same problem. I really need some help on this one..
Try *228 option 1. Our just call verizon and ask them to make sure there is a default prl for your account

Good lord how often does Sprint need to release new PRLs?!
I have a (possibly dumb) question, what are PRL's and what do they do? I've updated my radios, ran tons of different ROMS, changed lots of little things on my EVO, yet I still don't understand PRL's.

PRL is the preferred roaming list. It is basically a database of towers that the phone uses to prioritize what towers it connects to.

Maybe, as often as it takes to get it right. I've had nothing but trouble with PRL 60669 and let Sprint know it. Since updating to 60669 my phone not only roams in areas where it never roamed before, but it roamed in the middle of the NYC (as keishou notes in Atlanta with 60670).
Since the 60669 update, I've watched my phone go from a 4-bar EVDO reception to a 5-bar 1x connection while in the middle of a data session. The phone, therefore, intentionally switched towers from a 98% (reported) signal-strength EVDO connection to a 100% signal-strength 1x connection. WTF applies here, HUGE.

If you're on a non-AOSP ROM,
1. Do a NAND backup
2. Dial ##786#
3. Hit Menu - Reset
4. Enter your MSL (just call sprint and say "I need my MSL," they didn't even ask for a reason)
5. When phone is rebooted into recovery mode, wipe all three (data/cache/dalvik-cache) - I'm not sure if this step is required, but to be safe, recommended
6. Reboot
7. Phone will take longer to boot, and when lockscreen is loaded, unlock
8. Phone will say something about hands-free activation
9. Phone will say updating PRL - hit cancel here
10. Phone will say updating firmware - hit cancel here
In theory, this should revert you back to the 60662 PRL since you cancelled the PRL update.

Did you finish the process with QPST after using CDMA? If your getting a fast busy signal like sound, it's more then likely Cricket not having your correct ESN. Do you have an account setup already and have provided them your converted MEID #?
My friend had given me the wrong MIN number.. for some reason data still worked. Changed the MIN and walla.. Find out another thing later that day though.. Google voice acts crazy with cricket on a flashed Droid X. Made it pretty much impossible for someone to call me. Would actually say the number is no longer in service. Tried to deactivate call forwarding from the info in account settings for google voice. it says to dial *740 on your phone and hit call.. Doesn't work. *720 WILL fix the issue though. Something to do with Cricket not doing conditional call forwarding. .

Glad to hear it's working. Actually, funny thing with Cricket and data...as soon as your done with CDMA, you will have data. Let's say you have a data plan already on your phone and you buy another phone you are going to upgrade to. You can still flash your new phone to Cricket and while your old phone might not have voice calls/texts, you can surf the web on both phones still getting perfectly clear 3G where it's available
YEA! I have a friend that i flashed a mogul and a Touch pro to cricket back in the day. He had the mogul activated and was still able to surf the web with the Touch pro. Nice little bonus i guess. lol

There used to be an online tutorial on how to flash a DX to Cricket but the whole forum has been down for a while. Its a lengthy process to flash and as you already know, it takes a long time if you don't know what you are doing 100%. Techs charge up to $90 for this flash for a reason...they know the ins and outs and have a guide that's taken time and patience to make. Like myself. I can flash any Motorola Droid to Cricket in less then 10 minutes. Its taken me hours to get that fast and lots of trail and error.
What part are you having trouble with?

not sure why the other person hasnt answered but I would like some help with the same issue. I can talk and text fine via the PRL change. I can use anything CDMAWS and QPST to edit my phone but after i try using a nvram backup from whiterabbit or whether i try to edit the settings using QPST the phone restarts as normal and u see the data bar going from 1x to 3g and the phone soft resets over and over. ideas? I would like to at least get the net working. from there im sure i could resolve the next issue.

CDMA or QPST should not be causing your phone to reset unless you accidently changed a setting in QPST. Which PRL are you using? Most stable is 49027 for the DX at the moment. Did you have these issues before the flash? Did you buy the phone used and then started the flash process? I hope you didn't get a busted DX

Ahh, that must be why it works! I am on the $55 plan and my 3G speeds are consistent 1.2Ghz when stupid iJunk users aren’t bogging down AT&T's network. When speed is at it's best, it always beats out my girlfriend’s Droid X 3G speed on Verizon, not by much but enough to say so.
Im using 49027. I've narrowed it down to possible glitch. Upon entering the info for the proxy manually it goes into 1x then 3g then reader loop. Ivebeen using a stock backup to revert to prior tweaking so I can keep trying to figure this out if u have a exact method u use im all ears. Or just ideas. Im running out lol
Also one more thing, ive just entered in the proxy information manually via the cell phone and the phone hasnt given me a boot loop like it used to, still the internet isnt working yet so im going to go into QPST and see if just changing the mobile IP setting throws me into the loop again...EDIT: it sends me into a soft restart loop since its on mob+simp f/back again... catlog didnt show anything that i can see sadly. the soft restart forces the log to stop and doesnt show why it did.switched it back to mobile ip only and stopped the reboot cycle but no data at all ugh...

Just flash it in ROM Manager
I've talked to a couple of folks on the V10 token. Some say it has no relevance and one said it might actually harm your phone since it's not even made for the Droid X specifically. I tried it and it didn’t do anything. It came to be that my MNC in my APN was incorrect.
Without doing a full SBF on your phone, there array of issues you might have are to wide to diagnose. You need to start over and not use your backup. If the problem still persists then let us know but I doubt it will if you did the Cricket flash properly.
Have you changed your APN settings as well? I use anycut from the market to edit and save it.

I Called sprint and spoke with tech support and spend a hour on the phone with a guy who had me do ALL the same things i already did before i called (try n update profile, prl, airplane mode, etc.) Even thou i told the guy i did all this he said " lets just try it 1 more time " Got frustrated and ended the call after he was having me do the same things over and over.
Since that is the case, i would take it to a Sprint repair store and have them look at it. You could always try ODIN back to DI18 and update to EC05 again and then updating your profile, but you shouldn't be always roaming if you are in a green area with sprint service.

Reflashing the modem, may help.

Just ignore unhelpful people like that.
As inconvenient as it might be, if I were you I'd try driving to where you know for sure you'd be on a different tower. I did that a couple times when I had signal issues and it cleared them up...even when I went back home to my local tower. I didn't do anything to the phone itself.
It was weird, but it worked.

Interesting. Hope you get it sorted.
sprint store
I am also having the same problem. I spoke to several techs that wanted me to do a restore of my phone, but i refuse because I have 2 epic's and they're both having the same roaming problem. I will be taking both of mine to the sprint repair store today or tomorrow. I will let you know if they find anything.
Root your phone and buy roam control from the market. That should change you back to sprint

What PRL does your phone info say?
I would try reloading the prl either by the update that fails all the time or with qpst.
Try to backup your stuff first then do ##786# to reset your phone
if that didn't work then try to use odin and install the firmare again but this time try to make sure you select ( Phone EFS Clear) which will restore your phone completely to stock then when it runs it should update profile by it self and will program your phone.
Have you used roam control?
you can also try to use this app for roam control
hope this help

Shift only uses 1x data, claims 3G

I generally use my shift at home or work on wifi. This week I'm on vacation and have been using Sprint's network primarily. I was using a CM7 nightly for a while and noticed that I've never seen the 3g icon, only 1x. I confirmed this by installing an app from the market called 'Opensignal' which shows details about your connection, which tower you're connected to, etc.
I flashed to a sense based ROM (Mik) and have the same issue- 1x only. However, it now always displays the 3g logo when data is 1x, even if roaming.
It seems that something in my phone is keeping me stuck without 3g that persists through reinstalls/wipes. I'm hoping there is some type of hidden setting or config option I can look at outside of the standard settings in the system.
Any ideas other than flashing back to stock/unrooted?
You will find that the stock sense rom will show 3G always as well. You can open up the dialer and dial ##33284# Choose EVDO engineering, and look at the state.
And if not in a sense rom *#*#info#*#* will let you view you connection details.
Toasted by Nightly.
Unfortunately I would ruu back to stock, update profile and prl in update section then see if that helps. Run speed tests and keep a record of results to help in the process of elimination. Could it just be the tower you're near or some Podunk town out in the sticks that doesn't have good equipment? Go to a sprint store with working displays. Do speed tests with the display then your phone. Maybe you got a lemon?
You could be roaming or on an old system. Turn roaming off and set network to sprint only and see if that makes any difference. I know years ago I went to my home town in the Midwest and throughput and signal was poor until I went into a major city (like the capital) then speed and signal was good again.
Thanks, I didn't realize HTC always made the 3g logo show- that's really stupid. *#*#info#*#* shows me good stuff and re-confirms me getting 1x only.
Will any of the settings listed attempt 3G data only? I set it to EVDO but it seemed to stay at 1x.

##3282# & ##33284# are your best bet to edit anything if you're not planning on running an RUU, really you shouldn't have to, just turn EvDo only on and see if it even connects. Maybe the 1X towers are stronger than EvDo, if you have it at all.
Reset data profile entirely through ##3282# - you need your MSL - MSL Reader is on the market.
Try that and document your speed results, etc. Then update your prl. If you really want to, then go ahead and apply the 3G speed fix mentioned in Android Development (not necessary but if you're concerned with speed you might wanna try every step.)
If all that fails, you do still have the RUU and start fresh approach. Personally before I'd do anything I'd get ahold of another android device, maybe not HTC, and see what it's doing for speed, etc.

Great info. Using the info code I've set it to EVDO only but it still says its at 1xRTT, even after a reboot(!). My wife has a Sprint LG optimus S- I've looked at its settings and its connected @ 3G so I know whatever tower in my area should connect.
I got my MSL from that app and can get to edit mode via ##3282# but I do not see an option to reset, only to change to other profiles that appear to have the same config. It was choosing profile 1, I changed it to 0 with the same results.
How do I reset data profile?
Edit: ##33284# lists evdo as 0 (disabled) but does update info as to its signal strength and so on. This is all still with the phone set to EVDO only but yet connecting at 1xRTT.
I seem to have it working now. The change I made was ##3282#, EVDO, preferred mode = auto. This was previously set to CDMA. After a reboot I now have 3g.
I'm curious what this is set to for others? I've never been in these screens before and have this feeling that I've never had 3g data (I've had my phone since launch day).
Ive reflashed CM7 and 3g works there too now, i'm seeing the 3g icon for the first time.
Also its quite sneaky that HTC/Sprint only show the 3g icon on a Sense ROM. Had i never installed a non-sense based ROM i'd have never really known that i was stuck on 1x. Shame on HTC/Sprint.

I would like to say this thread has helped me achieve EVDO (ive been 1x also since release). Sadly this doesn't work on AOSP roms for me, but i'm happy just getting what i'm paying for... and have been but haven't received. Its noticeably faster.
BUT.. for noobs not used to the ##3282# menu, after making a change, press the menu button and commit the change. I had gone through these steps changing the drop down and immediately restarting. Apparently you have to manually save these settings.. or at least on my phone.
where are you guys entering these numbers and "EVDO"? because mine is also showing 1x and i wanna fix that

you get free thanks i guess... mouse slip up
anyway, its in your dialer, just use the keys as if the 'code' is a phone number
LOL double thanks
By the way i found out if you enable EVDO(DDTM) you might not receive some calls, just putting preferred mode on automatic will do the trick

For the record the stock rom WILL show 1x. I've seen it. I guess that's when service is just plain terrible.

The only rom it works for me on is MikShift. Not even on the stock rom, though I did call and voice my complaints to both Sprint AND HTC, they didn't give a rat's ass.

If I install mikshift and make the change will it persist if I flash back to cm7?

It worked for me. I also updated my Profile and PRL through sprint just for the hell of it.

1 Reboot your HTC EVO Shift 4G.
2 Press your phone icon on the screen.
3 Enter ##3282#.
4 You have to give it roughly 10 seconds for the EPST screen to appear.
5 If the 1st 3 steps don't work, you may have to restore to the Stock ROM.

Seem to have worked for me as well except on the next day...I got an (I believe unrelated) random wake-up reboot, it just decided to keep connecting in1x mode. Now I'm back to mik and I'm constantly in evdo rev a mode
I really like cm and I've had it fully setup to my liking...then when I discovered about opensignal and the whole 1x thing...I feel like I'm missing out on something. I think its more ocd than anything else since cm7 is fully functional anyway...but still. I do hope they figure out what the prob is. I can't wait to go back to cm
