Hi there.
I've had problems with my HD2 since I got it shortly after release last year. I've upgraded it to the latest ROM 1.66 and I still *had* problems with extreme sluggishness and freezing. "Services.exe" was a program that often got problems. I also had the "sleep of death" syndrome.
After I updated it and did a hard-reset I used PIMbackup to backup my contacts, SMS messages, appointments and such. No programs were restored. It still had the same problems. So I tried different things, but with no luck, until I did a hard-reset and restored everything except for my SMS messages. There were about 1600 of them, which I personally think is not that many. Now it runs fine, no freezing nor sluggishness.
So my question is, is it normal for an expensive smart phone like this to get that slow and unstable just by having a little too many SMS messages?
Thanks in advance.

i've just gone an deleted 5000 SMS's and i was not having any problems with slowness.
I just deleted them for a bit of house keeping, thats all.
i weekly take backup of sms's using pimbackup. if i dont clear the sms then it will b very difficult to text and open the application. it takes around 10-15 seconds to open a conversation thread with mor than 2000 sms's and around 8-10 seconds for 200-700 sms.
I weekly send around 4-5000 sms's and this fone have only one BAD point.. that is Messaging client.

So if you can have triple the amount of text messages than me, that must mean that there is something wrong with my phone, right?
If I send it to repair, they'll probably just hard-reset it, take a quick test on it, and sent it back saying they didn't find any problems on it. Isn't that right?

thats may be why, i dont, i found with HTC messaging client that with as little as 100 sms in my inbox the client would lag, so i reverted to WM messaging client and runs like a dream, on its not the best looking client but still, does the job as they say.
Ah, ok. Where can I find the WM client?
Thanks for your help!
im not 100% sure but i think there shuold be a way of dissabling HTC client and it will default to WM SMS, maybe someone else could shed some light on this
Nevermind, found it =)

I very, very sad....
I can't view list of SMS
I can't answer to SMS without 5-10sec timeout
I can't use default interface for SMS
Its terrible.
If you ready to answer me about this with thread when swith to default mode, you must to know that I've tried this and I lost MMS.
I can't use only SMS without MMS.....
Plz, help. Who sovle this problem, help.....
.
+1 it's to sad. I've had the phone for 3 weeks now, and i'm waiting on HTC to fix this terrible issue (this and the alarm issue..)
i still have to use Nokia N86 as my primary phone, because like you, i want both MMS and SMS. HTC please??
Guys,
If this issue is really of concern to you do the following:
- write to HTC so they know that there is still a problem out there for some users.
- implement this fix here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584696 (see the last post f you want to solve the MMS issue).
WB
Same here!!
What I am doing now as a workaround is using PowerSMS (http://download.cnet.com/PowerSMS/3000-10440_4-10920088.html).
It allows you to make a full backup (among others) of your SMS (inbox and sent items) and restore them anytime with the option to delete them after backing up.
Regarding the amount of use you can backup SMS you don't need anymore. It's really quick.
I'm doing this once/twice in a week and the sms app is responding. According to the amount of sms you send/receive you can screw it up and down;-)
I receive round about 10 sms each day and send ~10 sms pro day.
But as I said. It's not really a solution but a little apsirin for my headache!
Cheers,
LEE
P.S. beside all these, this powerSMS is a really nice app (e.g schedule SMS ) .
Theoretically you could also use MyPhone to sync up with your online account and then sync back to device if you want to backup and flash a new rom.

I use MyPhone on a daily basis (it automatically backs up everything except my storage card at 4am). It also allows you to archive text messages online, and you can then delete them from your online store and it automatically deletes them from your phone during the next sync. Doing this, I never have problems with my SMS or MMS, as I keep the number of messages down. I've got over 2000 messages archived on MyPhone (accessible via the web interface), and about 100 on my phone at the moment. Once there's a 100% fix in place, I can restore the archive and they will get put back on my phone automatically.
If any of you are having problems, have you done what wacky.banana suggested? That thread seems to have resolved the issue for the majority of people. Okay it's not ideal, but until HTC fix this then we have to make do with what we have.
I dont understand why you told about Backup SMS? I have not problem with backup.... I have problem with SMS messaging.
As i wrote above, I can't get normal communication by the SMS.

Henry_Lee,
What JohnCMolyneaux is trying to tell you is that your problem is probably being caused by the HTC SMS application not being able to cope with too many texts on your phone. Its a well known problem and produces the symptoms you have (search for SMS problem on XDA and you will find lots of threads on this).
What he was trying to say was that if you backup your texts online then delete all of them off the phone but the bare essentials then you stand a better chance of getting the HTC SMS app to work.
An even better solution is the one I set out above.
There's no more on offer here I'm afraid. It's either one of the 2 solutions above or you live with it.

I have only 10-20 SMS on my phone and get problem even with 1-5 SMS.
I already wrote to HTC support service but I think someone solve problem....
I never had any problem .. I know it's not being helpful, but just so you know.
now that hspl & sspl is out with several cooked ROMs, is there any ROM that solves this issue? or will there be any ? becuz this is the only issue anoying me right now, and i kind of don't see why to flash ROMs only becuz of their skin :S
I have two major issues with this phone, 1. some sms messages doesen't get sent, they're stuck in the outbox. 2. the alarm clock isn't reliable at all.
Sendt an e-mail to HTC and got this answer: (i did include in the e-mail the fact that i have installed the hotfix)
Dear HTC Customer
HTC is aware of this now, and working on a solution. Thank you for your patience

Well, this will not easily be solved by a simple rom fix.... It's a fundamental error in the sense 2.5 msging. The alternatives aren't perfect either (there is a sense 2.1 workaround which has some bugs as well as the 'disable sense' option which isn't all that for some).
Afaik custom roms usually are stripped, updated, modified and tweaked and no core fixes which are the resposibility of HTC.
Henry_Lee,
I found a solution for my SMS problem, which was quite similar to yours I think:
- not able to send (new) or answer messages
- not able to see message history
- not able to go to 'more' for more options
First of all I wrote an email to HTC as well, but they didn't seem to understand my problem or care about it. They answered a hotfix
would be available soon, but that was a hotfix to solve the other SMS problem where messages didn't get sent immediately etc..
However, once this was released I downloaded it and installed it onto my HD2, result: wasted my time (as I expected really...).
Because HTC didn't respond to my next messages anymore (therefore I assume they don't really care) I started to try a couple of things
myself:
1. Made a backup using SBP Backup software excluding a backup of the registry in System Data
2. Performed a hard reset
3. Installed ROM upgrade (in my case it was Netherlands 1.48.404.2)
4. Installed SMS Function Update
5. Re-installed most of the files in the backup in ROM Upgrade Mode, apart from System Data (use Customize Restore)
Result: problem(s) solved!
SMS works like a charm again, as it did when I just bought the phone.
Just disappointed in the way the HTC customer service desk works (or doesn't work...). Still, it's not just HTC's CS, Nokia excels in their
stupidity, one of the reasons I got a HTC phone this time. Let's hope I won't have to contact any of them again soon...
Hope this helps!
Brgds,
Paul

How long has the problem been solved? I found this problem after 3 weeks with my device. A hard reset (or equally a ROM flash) would surely cause the equivalent. You may see the problem reappear, as I did after a week, after the 1.48 "upgrade".

The SMS function has been up and running for about 3 weeks now. And like I mentioned earlier I have also upgraded the ROM version, no problems since.
Many messages have been sent and received meanwhile so at the moment I'm confident the problem has been solved properly. If not I will let y'all know!
Brgds,
Paul
I do sympathize with those having SMS issues. Have you all consider possibility is hardware issue as you also notice there are guys in the forum saying they do not have such issues. I am one of them. I have been using the HD2 for 38 days already. On day one I restore about 800 sms into my phone. There was NO lag and the SMS were all displayed within 10+ secs ( one time lag to display ). Subsequent no more such lag as was instant display when I access it
SMS stuck in outbox only one time ( few minutes ) - I discounted it off, as I just reach another country
daily I send/recieve about 20-30 SMS : till today I NEVER encountered SMS stuck in outbox. SMS was also immediately displayed in PEOPLE tab ( found many users complain very slow to load ). I only face this issue few days ago on the cooked rom based on Leo 2.0 build 28*** ; I change back to rom based on build 2188## - no more such issue
Till today I NEVER even bother to install the SMS hotfix - see no need of it

Heard, but I will wait normal SPL and Bepe.
When I had HTC Cruise I tried many ROMs and Miri's too, but only Bepe to cook ROM like my taste.
Looks like HSPL is ready. isnt?
I know that there has been many posts about the SMS lag when opening text conversations with loads of texts.
I remember a couple of months back I saw a post on here with a registry edit that reduced the lag time upto 70%.
I can't seem to find this post.
Does anyone know this information....
there are now some newer versions of the messaging client that improves on this bug a little but if you are like me and have contacts with extreme amounts of text messages associated with them (i have one that has over 2600) there is still some delay but not as bad as it was

That's rude!!!! It should be my choice when to delete them. I'll keep an eye on this and see what happens.
I've also noticed that MS my phone can sometimes corrupt the HTC message database when it does a backup so be careful of that one too.

OS version - 5.2.21892 (21892.5.0.89)
Manila Version - 2.5.20121412.2
Rom Version - 2.13.531.1 (90963)
Rom Date - 04/28/10
Radio Version - 2.10.50.26
Protocol Version - 15.39.50.07U
The problem is that when I get an incoming text message, my phone will freeze for upwards of 2-5 min before the text clears and the sound plays. After the sound plays, my phone will have slight lag, but then go back to normal speed.
If multiple texts come in at the same time, my phone can be frozen for up to 15 min!
Any help?
Welcome to the HTC SMS client...the one true achilles heel of this phone. The newer version that comes in the ROM you have was supposed to fix all that, but it only seems to have helped a little, and not for everybody.
You can help it a little by keeping the number of messages in your inbox trimmed down to a minimum, but even that won't solve the issue where it chokes when getting too many messages too fast.
There's a cab or two to disable the HTC client and just work with the underlying WM interface, but I haven't tried any of them. Several of the custom ROM's available here also have that disabled by default (as part of their effort to make the phone work better in general).
So there is nothing to do?
No new messaging mods/apps or anything like that?
EDIT: I currently have lots of conversations and lots of texts in those conversations. Would trimming those down help?

Use the Microsoft Myphone program to archive your text messages online. They'll be pulled off your phone and stored in your online profile. You can restore any single sms or all of them if you.
It wont archive MMS, so you'll need to manually save those and delete them from your inbox.

ranestari, that article there has a link to (one of) the cabs I mentioned above, that will simply disable the HTC SMS client and let you use the stock WM interface instead. That should go a long way towards helping with your issues, but we still highly recommend not letting your inbox get too overstuffed...WM has long been known for not being able to tolerate that.
Sorry to necro this thread, but is there any other messaging client that I could use a cab with?
With the stock windows mobile client, I don't recieve any texts, but I know that they get sent.
I don't see a thread about this..please someone tell me we can have more than 25 texts in a 'conversation' and not sit for 30 seconds or more waiting for that little scroll bar to shrink so we can actually type in a text message.
Most of my friends have 500+ texts now and I have to revert to manually keying in their name and craeting a 'fresh' message every time I respond to them.
of course after I flash that history will be gone..but I really want to believe they've fixed this R I D I C U L O U S bug once and for all.

Well even if it doesnt, try using something like PIMBackup to backup all your messages, then clear them out. thats what i've resorted to doing on a weekly basis. I am hoping at some point this problem is fixed and then i can merge all those weekly backups and restore them into the messaging app. but until then i still have an archive of them
I've asked this question in a few of the other threads about the 3.14 ROM & it seems to still be there.
I doubt it'll change unless HTC rewrites the program to only show the last 10 of each persons texts instead of all of them
I've been running the leaked 3.14 and have noticed no sms lag. The whole ROM runs so much smoother. Battery life is better as well, but then that could be my battery being broken in too.
Overall it's worth it to switch over. I've been very happy with it.

sorry to hijack my own thread, but is there a screenshot of this sms app? i've been looking to replace the htc sense sms app (reason i started this thread) into something that looks more like the iphone 'bubble thought' thread IM conversation.
but for some reason..i'm having a super hard time finding screenshots of the app in your SIG...there's lots of screnshots of the config screen..but not the UI for the mms and sms conversation itself.
is it worth the hassle to swap sms/mms clients? i like sense..but i don't like having to jump through hurdles (like manually keying in the person's name each time) to sms people.
THanks!
It's the older WM SMS app that was before Manila 2.5. If you've ever had a Touch Pro 2, Kaiser/Tilt, MDA/Wizard it's the SMS app that's on that. Its actually the program that your email is in too.
To switch is easy: install the Disable HTC Messaging cab on my post & also the Arcsoft one for MMS. You'll have to configure the Arcsoft client for your MMS server settings. If you have the TMOUS HD2 then just install both of the other cabs on there for MMS profile & settings & you'll be good to go. To test, just send yourself an MMS
It seems to me that the messaging app's lag problem MIGHT be fixed. when i was on 2.13 with around 400msgs in the database it was lagging a lot, I backed everything up with PIMbackup before i updated the firmware. Upon restoring the backup with all the messages, there is almost no lag now. Maybe a real quick stutter when a message comes in vs the nearly 5-10 seconds that my phone would completely freeze up and be unusable before
This could also quite possibly be because the message database is nice and clean now. We'll see what happens with time.
I am not sure if it is just me or everyone else is also having this problem also:
The Message app interface is really slow. It takes a long time to load or send messages. There is atleast a 5+ second delay when interfacing with different threads. For example: When I am reading my txt messages from person A, and then I press the back button to view all my messages, it takes atleast 5+ secs to go back to the view with all messages.
To troubleshoot this issue, I backed up my mmssms.db file and deleted it from the phone. This way I start fresh with no saved message. All of a sudden this issue was solved. The interface was fast again with no lag at all. But when I restored my original mmssms.db again, the interface becomes slow again.
Any way resolve this issue?
Edit: I am using the MDJ FroYo Revolution v2.3 NAND build.
Is this problem occurring in the Android ROM you have in your signature, or in WM?
If it's WM then you need to update your ROM as there were SMS lag issues in early WM ROMs.

I can't suggest a solution that would make the messaging app quicker with that many texts, but I use an app called SMS Backup+ (available free on the Market) and it automatically backs up all messages (and new messages) to your Gmail account, in a new folder called SMS. That way, you could delete them from your phone and still have access to them.
Alternatively, try an another SMS app, like GO SMS (again, free on the Market, as are many others). It may be better for you.

Also, I have been noticing my text messages keep randomly being deleted. Luckily I have them backed up and have to restore it. I have noticed this problem atleast 4 times during the last 4 days. Why is this happening? I made sure to go to Settings and uncheck limited messages.
