hi guys,
honestly speaking..the games preloaded on xperia make me feel like i am in year 2002 when O2 Xda was around.
in todays world when PC has high def games.. mobile phones like N95 or N82 having 3D games..why cant Xperia have some decent games which can cater to Gaming enthusiasts.
Solitaire, bubble breaker, bejeweled also..these games are very lame for a Gamer like me..even during year 1998 i used to avoid them and play Dave or Wolf 3D..what i like are 3D car racing games or 2D games which are like RPG.
Some type of games i would love to play on Xperia:
Racing games, Sports (Tennis), shooter..or any other BUT the default games.
the optical joystick has a huge huge potential as an input interface for such games.
but are there any games on Xperia?
Buh, don't bother searching for games for at least another six months. None of the cool apps (Genesis/SNES/GBA Emulators, Open Source Games, DosBox, ScummVM) support WQVGA and WVGA resolutions, which is pretty frustrating since my older phones did support most of them but lacked the inputs and processing power of the Xperia.
I hope some developers see the light and will support widescreen resolutions in the near future.
Oh, and you could try WVGA-Fix, it wil blank 1/3 of the X1's screen, giving you a VGA resolution which is better supported. But IMO that is not the 'right' solution.
So far, I found only the two preinstalled Astraware Games (strange, they don't seem to offer them on their site for other WVGA devices like the Touch HD), Quartz2, and Spore Elements to really support the WVGA resolution.
Most other games only use the VGA part, leaving a part of the screen either black or with the previous contents. Only a few games don't run at all or not usable, like most of pdaMill's games (they're currently looking for a solution to that...).

I'd noticed that too
I just found this list of wvga games
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462217
BTW is there a way to get out of a game if it is not in full screen and I get stuck? Other than reset by taking off the cover? My fingernails are all gone now from resets and so I'm hoping there is an easier way since the hardware buttons don't have their normal functions while in a game. THANKS!
I'm running a list of games that i have installed and running on my Xperia without problems. There are around 12 Java games that support WVGA and a few native WM games as well... along with those that run in VGA but in full-screen (with part of hte screen black).
To check out the list: http://xperiancer.blogspot.com/2008/12/gaming-on-xperia-part-1.html
I'll be posting part 2 tonight with more games that i found to work on Xperia... only those in WVGA.
also... you guys might wanna try out ScummVM. Not in full WVGA (i.e. runs in VGA) but awesome games compatibility!
tomb raider
actually tomb raider works very well on the x1, ok its not wvga, but its still quite good, and its free...give it a roll...

Tried it already... it does work great, but didn't it show the previous window outside its resolution? (i.e. instead of showing a black screen in the remaining area, it shows the previous screen like file explorer or today screen there)
Tomb Raider worked brilliant on the Wizard so it hardly shows off the X1.
Sadly the "power" of the X1 is not exactly showing itself off when it comes to games. All the emulators suck IMO due to a lack of adequate (or possibly enabled at all?) graphics acceleration.
I mean come on, you should be able to at LEAST emulate a Game Gear at full speed/framerate with full sound. A 486 DX2/66 could do that for crying out loud. If the X1 was THAT slow it wouldn't be able to support video like it does, even if that support still sucks too.
I love my X1, but when it comes to games/emulators or video playback it downright sucks. People claiming it "plays fine" because they get 14fps are insane, fine is full framerate, pathetic is anything lower.
^ Welcome to HTC's latest releases. Though tbh the problem lies with Qualcomm if you've followed the whole saga from the Kaiser's time. There are efforts to develop drivers in this Blackstone thread as the chipsets on HTC Diamond/Raphael/Blackstone/Kovsky are all very similar. Please, please contribute here if you are a developer or have any background in such things:

Though i have been unable to get any Sega or Nintendo emulator to work god... but ScummVM games are working without any glitch (but then my iPhone played those great too)... and then there are other games too that are great at playback and quality.
Tomb Raider probably doesn't speak well for the device, but if you try other games such as Syberia - they work simply awsome! No lag during videos in the game and slowdowns, etc.
I do however agree that the true potential of gaming on Xperia is yet to be discovered.
Yeah I had suspected that was the case when GLBenchmark refuses to run any 3D benchmarks for me, plus the poor results from the people who did get it to work.
Its one of those unfortunate things I only found out about AFTER I bought my X1 and was left wondering if it was true or not, because nobody seems to mention it in the X1 forum.
However, I bought my X1 as a phone, calendar/alarm and web browser when out and about. To be fair, it does all those things pretty well and even plays music at very good quality so I no longer have to take my MP3 player around with me. I was also pleased at the camera quality considering it had already been said its below-par for a Sony Ericcson phone. It works better in low light than my Canon S3 IS so long as I can keep it steady long enough for the slow software to do its stuff.
Keeping on subject though, why do they keep insisting on putting crap digital pads on phones/PDAs? I would be more inclined to play games on it if it had a DS style D-Pad or something. These weird shaped ones just don't work especially as there are never buttons in a good enough place either. I couldn't be bothered playing Tomb Raider on my Wizard because the buttons were too uncomfortable/unreliable to avoid dying.
The irony is Nokia got it right, they were just a little too early and a little too clunky to gain the popularity they needed. But the X1 like many others totally could have delivered, but then of course Sony don't want to be competing with the PSP so limiting the controls and 3D support could very well be deliberate.
ScummVM should be brilliant if supporting the resolution. I have tried it on various portables and never found it worked very well, not always because of slowdown but because there was never enough pixels on the screen to fit everything you need. In general ScummVM games do not push the graphics hard so the X1 should indeed be fine. Its just annoying that I, like many others, read that the X1 had 3D acceleration so were excited at this prospect. Only to be disappointed to find its locked down.
Ah well, Android and Linux in general should change everything, eventually. It puts the power back in the end-users hands where it belongs so that if they fail to deliver drivers some clever open-source hackers will figure it out. Its just a bit pathetic that ATI/AMD are so pro open-source on PC but we get locked out on mobiles presumably because Qualcomm are greedy SOBs.

Hmmm... Xperia has a good 3d chip + hardware acceleration, but alas! few games realize the potential yet. Hopefully we'll see more soon.
But is anyone even using the modified 3D accelerated driver on their X1? Is it stable if they are?
I would expect to find it mentioned in the performance thread if it was working.
Really pathetic...
my W800i had tennis, 3D racing, and black hawk down like games and all freely available.
but for Xperia..none of those kinda games
Where can I find Tomb raider?
Is there a nice Columns clone that works with the X1s resolution?

Ummm... well don't know about Tennis, but you have GT Racing for Xperia and Snow Rally City Stage 1.1.
Will post info on more games on my blog later tonight.
after i read the article about the slide outperforming the nexus on 2.2 droid etc.. i thought i should try some of this out so i played raging thunder 2 and ran neocore and raging thunder had no lag except on startup where its counting 3.2.1 go!without sound it didnt lag at all this game is meant for high-end phones too so i guess the slide is now high-end outperforming other phones and all and then in neocore i got 31.1 FPS with sound on! with it off i got 34.2 FPS nice scores!
NOW can we consider the slide High-end outperforming others, playing high-end games well, scoring high benchmarks and running great with its 512 mb of ram! and with a keyboard i like NES and quake did i forget to mention that
i can make a video of it if requested!
What I'm wondeing is, what keys do you use as the D-Pad?
I have gameboid on my slide and it runs great.ashphault t runs ok but the game itself sucks.

Just general NES or SNES games, since the phone doean't have directional buttons.
assign keys simple for emulators but other games eh
OK to answer your questions im sure I have seen a button configuration option in the settings area of those emulators. use wadz or wasd for directional buttons like so:
w= up A=left (S= down or right) D= right Z= down
and then just set the other buttons to whatever fits your need.
I know Zenonia is preset you can use that setup i just gave you and it will work but some keys do not have settings and will not recognize those keys as directional arrows etc...
They do however have bluetooth mini keyboards for phones if you look on ebay you could probably find a cheap 30$ alternative compared to the 80$ options I have seen people demonstrating on videos. Apple bluetooth keyboard also works incase you have one.
ive also hit higher scores like 33.2 33.4 ha thats on utube..
here's the reason..
yes, the mts is a beast. however, it is HVGA reso. vs the WVGA reso that the N1, htc incredible, droid, etc. since its only having to render have the pixels, you get a much smoother playback experience. the 3.4 inch screen is perfect.
again. mts is a beast.

The screen looks great for a "Phone". All of those other devices look amazing but are power hogs when working off of a phone battery. I am completely satisfied with the MTS screen and am looking forward to owning and Android powered tablet in the future. Now that device, whoever the manufacturer may be, better have one hell of a screen on it!

Hi i hope not i am the only one
but when i buy the hd games in market
they cant be played it says not compatible with my device
a little bit weird for a phone with hd resolution
anyone elese here
the HD games on the market are designed for 960x540, which is a 16:9 resolution.
the note uses 1280x800, which is WXGA in a 16:10 ratio. it would have to be 1280x720 for it to be HD.
but anyway, the games should work but may give you black borders depending on what type of screen the game was designed for.
my note should arrive tomorrow so i'll probably be able to test some games out then.
which games were giving you difficulty? if i have them purchased i'll try them out

Try downloading spare parts & use the option for full screen. See if that helps & I believe you need to be rooted for "Spare Parts".
How do you install the HD version of apps/games? Market says my device is not compatible.
Asphalt 6 HD works fine for me and looks amazing, and it's free from Samsung Apps!

There are two threads in the apps section - one for games that work, one for games that don't. Perhaps check to see which games you are running.

I agree, that is very disappointing, but it is to be expected at that price. I bought this purely for use with emulators and d-pad enabled Android games for my disabled older brother. He will flip when he can finally play all his neo geo games on the go.
Oh and they make a 7-inch version of this device with a capacitive screen for about $150.

It looks great. We can use buttons instead of screen.
only 800mhz cpu with little-to-no dev community... the PLAY is shining bright comparatively
As it is a Android device can you download stuff from the market ?
Notice none of the games except the last one used any buttons. (last game used 1 button)
Also the game compatibility will be hororble, once becose of resolution and hardware and secend, who optizes his game for this? The Play will get many optimized games in 2012 and later but this is born dead.

Yeah, would've been a far better presentation if they'd actually shown us the feature that the device supposedly boasts; the freakin' gamepad. I wonder if the analog stick even works... I mean how would they even implement it

Sorry, I picked a bad video, this one is much better. The analog stick is a pseudo analog stick. It translates to movement of the dpad. I have seen several videos of this device and I am sold on its emulator capabilities, this isn't meant for playing shadowgun. It does not have access to the android market, you will have to sideload your apks, which for me is no problem at all. As far as compatibility, it should work with alot of games like cordy, sleepy jack, sonic 4, riptide, which all work with the dpad and enter button on any android device.
Oh and the hardware isn't that bad at all, its got a respectable amount of ram and a decent gpu, so I am confident it will be powerful enough for psx emu's.
Added the better video to the op.

The main complains I read about for the Nexus 10 stem from the extra high res display.
Would it possible... or dangerous... to have the option to lower the resolution when you do not need it so high?
1920x1200 would maintain the 16:10 ratio and still have a high res, but battery life and overall speed would surely improve greatly.
Anyone know of any reason I should not experiment with this?

Does it even work that way? You're still pushing a resolution of 2560x1600 regardless.
Actually just found this:
LCDDensity for Root
Does this work with N10?
Not sure how it would be dangerous to lower the res but wouldn't the picture quality degrade if you do this?
If you do this on a regular pc lcd monitor, everything looks like a turd.

That's just for changing the PPI. Something like how PA works. You'll just end up getting a smaller or larger version of the app.
There's nothing wrong with the resolution. Overall speed is top notch and battery life is pretty good. Most of the complaints are because of Chrome. Chrome itself is the problem though.
Don't worry dude.
To my knowledge, you can't directly modify what resolution the device runs at easily. You can change screen DPI easily, but not resolution (most, if not all apps only change DPI).
For example, changing the N10 DPI from 320 to 400 will make the UI look bigger, but games and everything else will still be running at native resolution, so essentially no performance change.
I imagine editing the resolution directly would require some source-code modification on either a ROM or Kernel level, or maybe even LCD driver, but I have no idea.
In any case, the N10 is fine at the resolution it's at, but a few non-optimized apps may not run ideally. I would say the CPU architecture is more to blame though instead of the screen resolution.

This is definitely true for games. Graphics intensive 3d games, like Shadowgun Deadzone, have a hard time running at native resolution on the Nexus 10. The game renders at native resolution even on the lowest graphics settings. Most maps are playable, but some have a really hard time. On an LCD display, the only way to scale back resolution, and still look reasonable, is to run at 1/2 resolution (4 pixels get rendered as 1). When the iPad 3 came out, many devs chose to continue rendering their games at 1024x768 to keep performance acceptable.
What would really help, is a way to fool a 3d game into rendering at 1/2 resolution. Playing at 1280x800 would still look great, especially if 4x MSAA was enabled.

If a game does not run well it is because the game is coded terribly, not because the resolution is too high. If we were able to lower the res it would help performance, but that is just a band-aid on the real issue of the developer not doing a good job with whatever they made. The GPU is running at its max potential, but it has enough power and bandwidth at stock speed that it can render any game that is properly made at 30fps.
DEAD TRIGGER has an option in a config file for screen resolution. I might imagine editing this file would tell the game to render at a lower resolution, but I'm not entirely sure. In any case, not entirely sure if any other game would have such a config file or resolution setting either.
GTA III has an option for screen resolution conveniently in it's in-game options. Setting it at 100% does cause a noticeable drop in FPS. Setting it to about 50% allows for (imo) playable, high FPS, without too much of a drop in overall quality. Pretty sure GTA III is just not "as optimized" as it can be though.

I respectfully disagree. Running the original Doom, or Crysis, at 2560x1600 are two dramatically different things. Does that make Crysis terribly coded if it doesn't run well on your hardware at that resolution? For pure aesthetics, I'll take a playable Crysis at 1280x800 over Doom at 2560x1600. I suppose using Doom in that example was not so appropriate given that it was programmed by God himself.
Given the tiny fraction of the mobile market that 2560x1600 makes up, I think it's pretty unlikely that we'll see games optimized for that resolution. Adding a 1/2 res setting for games seems like a far easier solution.

Games can be terribly coded which makes them run slower than they're supposed to.

I know that two games can have very different loads on the system, but if you look at all the tech doc's for the device the Mali 604 graphics processor has enough power and bandwidth to just barely push 30 fps @ 2560x1600 with properly coded apps. So if something is not coded well, it will not be able to reach proper frames per second to run smooth on this device. Optimizing for a resolution and have optimized code are very different things.
