So currently I am using my mytouch 3g (Original) unlocked on At-t and without a dataplan. When T-mobile decides to roll out the 2.2 update, how would I go about getting it? Would they make it available online to install manually (without rooting)? Or would I need to grab a T-mobile sim and download it that way. Also if I used the latter route and used someone else's sim, would they need to have a dataplan for me to download it? Or would my mytouch still detect the update and download it for me without a data-plan.
no data plan is needed as the update can come through wifi thats how i got my 1.6 update so it should be the same with froyo
Alright so if I connect the mytouch to wifi it will automatically find the update to install? No 3g connection to any network needed?

I think for most custom roms it won't work - to be sure roll back to last stock rom and hope to be one of the first
I haven't rooted my phone for awhile for numerous reasons, including the update. So basically OTA isn't over the network's data or anything? It's just a process that uses the internet, in whatever form it gets it?
I think some have missed the key point - you're on AT&T with a MyTouch (just like I am). You won't get the OTA automatically, as it is going to be sent by the carrier, not Google. AT&T doesn't "know" your MyTouch, and they don't support it...
The best solution if you're rooted, and the one I'm going to be doing, is simply to wait for a "clean rooted" version to come out and flash it. The OTA generally won't work on rooted phones since it is typically disabled.
If you're not rooted, then you'd have to find someone with T-Mobile and put their SIM card in and do a check for updates. Not sure if the data plan or wifi alone would be necessary in that case.
I heard that someone could simply manually install the update by looking for the link that the phone downloads it from. And you could do this without rooting, is that true?

If you think about it the new rom that installs on your phone comes with carrier apps (such as MyFaves, etc) and I really can't imagine AT&T sending you a T-Mobile rom. In my opinion (just a theory) I don't think that you would get the update. I could be wrong though.
Well in that case do you think it is likely that someone will be able to find the update file and I can load it onto my phone WITHOUT rooting?

I don't think so.
What's to stop you from rooting your device? It would solve all of your problems.

Actually cant someone who gets the OTA update look up a link in their phone (The location where the phone downloaded the update from) and post the link so people can download the file and manually update? If someone could do that when the update comes out I'd think that be a great help to myself and a few people out there who don't want to root but can't get their update.

Hi everyone,
I'm a new smartphone user, but I finally got one in the form of the Xperia Play. Upon doing research on the phones, I find that I'd definitely like to root the phone, and seeing that Verizon made a change to their version made me sad. Now, as I got the phone a few days ago, I was wondering:
Can the Verizon version of the phone be even rooted? i.e., should I keep this phone and wait for someone to root the phone, or will this more than likely not ever happen and I should go back and exchange it for a different model?
Thank you for any information.

I'm optimistic about GingerBreak being updated soon to allow root for the R800x. As of right now, version 1.2 just says "rooting" forever. I left it for 8 hours to no avail.
I believe it will be rooted with a future update for Gingerbreak.
Anything around will eventually get root. Its a fact of life basically
I'm willing to bet money that the verizon play will be rooted very soon.

Don't we have to have the BL unlocked in order to flash a generic image? Also I was checking out some of your post on the Arc forums I don't think Verizon is sim locked just CDMA and fastboot detects our phones just the unlock code doesn't work is there anyway the brute force or trick the phone to unlock? I would be willing try anything for the sake of the Verizon play's.
yes please please can we get some dev love on the verizon version of this phone.. I've had the phone 5 days and love the controls, but would like to see root access and all other types of goodies. Verizon is a bootloader locking b*tch, but there has to be someway around it. Unfortunately i think most of the devs on this phone aren't US/verizon customers so I don't think we're gonna see it too quick. I only have 9 more days to make a decision on whether or not to keep the phone or not...
Please if there is anyone reading this thread working on helping to crack this phone on Big Red please let us know... Unrooted + 3g reception issues might make me have to abandon one of the coolest phones i've ever owned...
Just take system.sin and loader.sin, make flash bundle and flash with flashtool. But be careful, if you don't have original Verizon's system.img, and you lose CDMA...

Wouldn't this require us to have unlocked bootloaders? Currently you can't get that on VZW/CDMA to my knowledge.

Flashtool can be used with a locked bootloader (see link below). Just put your phone into update mode just like you would with SEUS, and load your FTF file on the phone.
The trick is getting the generic UK R800i firmware to work correctly on the Verizon R800x. Nobody has done it, so there is the possibility of the CDMA radio not working after flashing (and other things may not work either). And AFIAK there is no R800x FTF file out there you can use to go back. But the R800i generic UK 2.3.2 firmware is rootable, so it could potentially be one way to do it.
It is possible to load the generic R800i UK 2.3.2 build on a Canadian Rogers branded/locked R800a, so theoretically it could potentially be a viable alternative
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108239
Yeah, cross-flashing is possible but there's possibility of loosing CDMA.
But I doubt this will happen since amss/radio is not located in /system, only some radio-related files which shouldn't affect this.
Anyways, grab /system/build.prop and if you'll need to go back, restore it, chmod 777, reboot phone, turn off, run SEUS.
Just ordered a used Nexus S on Ebay. I'm just getting it as a secondary development phone that will run ICS, so I won't be putting a SIM card in it.
Will this still get OTA OS updates over wifi, or do I need to root it and manually load a ROM?
Thanks.
OTA updates are internet so it doesn't require sim card
Sent from my ice cream powered Nexus S
It doesn't require a sim card but many times you will get it earlier if you do have a sim card in. It's all about how they are rolling it out (luck of the draw).
I can't give you a definite answer there, but they are straight from google so it shouldn't have anything to do with a carrier at all.
However, stock OTA or Full ROMs are signed to flash directly from stock bootloader (locked, not rooted). Only downside is you can't revert to an older version i believe.

I think Google does factor the carrier into their rollouts. There are plenty of examples of users adding a sim card and it triggering an update. However, you will get the update eventually if you are only on wifi.
Sorry, the point i was trying to get across was that it won't effect whether you'll get it or not, as you said. When you get it may change depending on carrier - this i dont know. Didn't clarify in my post above, thanks bozzy.
I was wondering if Im able to receive OTA updates even if I'm not living in US.
My phone model is i337m so its not the international version.
The carrier is AT&T
Anyone knows?
Of course my phone is SIM Unlocked and I'm not using AT&T
Thanks

AT&T has the i337, not the i337M (which is usually the Canadian variant). I believe the update server authenticates the SIM though. Not sure.

You can always download the OTA file when it's released, put it in the phone's internal memory and name it "update.zip". After that you can go to [stock] recovery by turning on the phone while holding only the volume-up key and choose "Apply update.zip"

But when I try to update OTA it always says that "there ir no upadate avaliable" and I'm not sure if this message apears because Im not in the US and using AT&T Sim Card or because my phone is rooted.
I updated to UCUAMDL via Kies but back then I wasnt root yet.
Is there another way to download the update.zip? Like a web site?

Well, if you're on an official, but rooted (stock) ROM, then the phone should still be able to check. Root itself doesn't make a difference in whether or not an OTA appears, but a custom ROM might have purposely broken the internal URL to check for OTAs in order to prevent them.
Just so you know, the AT&T Galaxy S4 has a locked bootloader. If you take an OTA, you'll lose root and you won't be able to do anything (no custom ROMs, root apps, or custom recovery) until an exploit is found. That's what's going on right now with people on the MF3 update. Currently they found a way to have root, but that's all.
You're better off downloading a stock, rooted ROM from here and flashing that when a new OTA comes out. They're usually posted quickly afterwards.

Hello all,
Attached are modified factory roms that will flash an at&t or t-mobile phone to an unlocked phone. This means no more bloatware and in my case much better handoff between the lte bands.
These images reuse the carrier bootloader (I'm working on it) but everything else from the radio to the rom is from the unlocked priv.
Version: AAJ919
AT&T -> unlocked hybrid: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298947044
T-Mobile -> unlocked hybrid: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767153589
Directions: Unzip files. Hold power and volume down until phone reboots to fastboot. Launch flashall.bat. Follow instructions. This WILL delete your data so have a backup or don't I'm your boss. Wait. Done.
As usual I am not responsible for you bricking your phone. That being said even if the wrong file is flashed the phone gets stuck at the fastboot screen where you can flash the right file.

You must already have an unlocked phone. If your phone is paid off call your carrier and ask for the pin.

I tried it and it worked. However, once it boots it will install a software update which takes you back to the bloated VZW version. Perhaps there's a way to block that update?

Totally possible. If we had root just modify the host file and set the verizon server update ip to localhost. You should be able to install DNS66 and do something similar. This will take digging on your end to figure out what the update IP is though.
I have an ATT Priv, so if I flash this I'll get next time OTA from BlackBerry instead of ATT? Saw the one above with the Verizon update and went back to bloated version.
Reporting back in to verify that it worked flawlessly on both at&t and t-mobile variants I have. Now if only we could get root lol
Thank you so much for your effort
I have an ATT branded Priv which got unlocked from ATT directly and has successfully installed this ROM. It works perfectly without any ATT bloatwares, but this built is old and when I check for system update it shows my system is up to date. However the most recent built for unlocked factory image is AAL202 according to the blackberry official reload software website.
So does this ROM OTA updates via ATT server or directly from Blackberry server?

I still have the original out of the box version file on my computer. I have updated my phone to the DE version. This is way different than the Note 5 firmware. I think I'm going to play with it this weekend to see if I can revert back to original stock though I'm not expecting a miracle. I'm hearing people can revert back but I'm not that interested in it until I need to be. I'm kind of disappointed that we don't have root and unlocked bootloader just yet but oh well. . it happens.
Bluetooth issues
I use my S8 with LG HBS1100 bluetooth headset and sometimes they disconnect... SOmetimes I can talk through whatsapp with the phone/speaker but not through bluetooth.
I also have the S8 connected to my Civic 2016 and it disconnect sometimes.
Tmobile signal/network is also very poor in some areas were I know are low but more noticeable.
I'm comparing these with my previous iphone 7+ S7 Edge and S8+.
I hope it improves with the update
I noticed my bluetooth acts wonky when I have any other wifi/bluetooth device active nearby. I did some testing with my work Iphone 7 and i get bad hickups in audio when its bluetooth or wifi is on in my car, when i turn it off, everything works fine.
