ext2 to ext3 upgrade seemingly does not work? - G1 General

Rooting my G1. When upgrading ext2 to ext3, the process just goes on and on for 30+ minutes until I take out the battery. Is this an issue with my sd card or have I done something wrong? Running Amon Ra's 1.6.2 recovery image.

SuperCSDIv4 Black Screen

Ok I’ve been having a problem everytime I try to restore my apps to the ext2 part. After I flash and everything when I boot up everything works fine. I then run the a2sd script on reboot to pull the preinstalled apps over to the ext2 part. Then i reboot recovery and do an ext2 wipe ==> ext repair (on Amon RA btw). Then from the terminal I run: “bart -e -r apps” to load all my apps onto the ext2 part of My sd card. Ive done this like twice and each time when I reboot after restoring my apps, when the phone boots up I get a black screen after the initial android splash screen. And I have to end up doing a battery pull and reflash. Anyone have an insight into this issue.
This is the rom I'm using.

Try this
go to recovery options wipe/factory reset first then update from sd card it should work then but dont forget to backup your files if u want to
I too had the same problem. I tried doing a wipe... davlik wipe of cache... repair of ext2 etc. Didn't work for me until i totally wiped my SD card and reformatted the partitions.

ClockworkMod problem

When I tried to wipe user data, I got error message "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk3p2 (Invalid argument) Error mounting /data/!" and mount USB storage not working anymore. Now my gtab always in viewsonic/gtablet loop regardless which ROM I use. I was running TntLite 2.10 before crash.
In cwm, go to advanced and repartition the internal mem. That fixes the /data mount problem.
how much?
repartition it to what?
I see 6 options:
-128mb
-256mb
-512mb
-1042mb
-2048mb
-4096mb
not sure how much is needed or what the best option would be...
I ran into this problem as well. After going from stock to ZPad 2.2 then to TnT Lite 2.2.0. TnT Lite 2.2.0 was giving me problems so I decided to do a nandroid restore of my stock backup and got the same error you are getting.
Tried a bunch of different stuff, and nothing worked, so I "threw a hail mary", I had CM 6.1 RC4 on my external SD so I installed that from ClockworkMod, let it boot fully, then I shut it down and booted back into recovery and did a nandroid restore of my stock backup, this time the restore was successful.
Note: I am using ClockworkMod v2.5.1.2

I chose 4096 and then 64. No problems so far after the re-part. Hopefully you back up before doing this.
Thanks guys. Just to +1 this solution.

I think I bricked my phone :(

I've been flashing the nightly build on my phone. The last time my phone was working was build 9. I than flashed build 12 and my phone got stuck on MT4G screen. I went ahead and did another full wipe but same result. Now I tried to flash build 9 and I still get same result. In a panic, I formated everything in advanced option and did another flash. Still nothing. I than followed this post in doing a wipe:
remove SD, power down device, SD in card reader, and delete all android created data (android_system; android; dcim->.thumbnails; tmp; data)
put sd back in phone.
boot into recovery
format boot
format system
{back to main menu} - factory reset
then mounts/storage, mount /system, mount /data
install .zip from SD card -> choose (CM-NIGHTLY-X)
then mounts/storage, remount /system (and /data if its not mounted)
install .zip from SD card -> choose (GAPPS)
reboot
win
So now my phone just gets stuck at the MT4G load screen. I can get into clockwork fine and flash but it just no longer will boot. Please help.
if you can boot into clockwork i dont think your bricked....try pushing the 2.x version to your phone and flash a 2.2 rom just to get to a working state.
then try again ?
I literally was going to have a heart attack. I was able to boot into the Nightly build. I guess theres something wrong with my sd card. I figured I try my 16gb card out of HD2 and it worked like a charm. Thanks for responding, I appreciate it.
Theres definitely something wrong with my 32gb Sandisk card. I formatted it with SDformatter to see if I can get it flash my phone and boot properly. Well, back to being stuck at MT4G load screen. The card works fine except for this problem. Now I just formatted 20gbs of music for nothing. FML!
haha no problem, try using HP USb storage format tool

[Resolved] Boot Loop due to corrupted filesystem CWM 2.5

So just wanted to share this in the event anyone else runs into the problem. I was running CWM 2.5 and CM7 RC2 just fine for a while now and I decided to clean my SD card yesterday since I have tons of empty folders from prior app/rom installs. After deleting some folders, my SD card would not be read by the phone. I rebooted and it sent it into a bootloop. Tried to format SD card in recovery and the settings menu, no avail. Tried to partition in adb to correct the issue and /DATA would not mount for the life of me. I could get it to mount via adb, but not in recovery. Any time I tried to factory reset or format DATA, it would say it cant mount the partition.
Anyway, I tried the latest version of CWM (3.8) and it managed to format each partition without any issues. I could then install CM7 without any issues and it booted right up.
So if anyone is experiencing SD card issues when altering the filesystem in any way, try upgrading the recovery image. It would have saved me a good number of hours troubleshooting, but hey at least I learned adb better lol
I am having the same exact problem, bootloop with no way to access card. How did you get CWM updated?

[Q] can NOT install apps from Play store

i used CM10, after i flashed a CM7 and it stuck in red logo M,then i flashed CM10 new buil, after that i can not install apps from Play store
and how can i flash CM7 from CM10. i have flash normal, but it stuck at red logo M
ensure you're using ext3, flash cm7, factory reset from stock recovery, test. maybe install cm7 again.
If that doesn't work then flash the sbf. Sbf to cm7 only takes about 15 minutes.
I had the exact cm10 to cm7 issue. I've posted all the ways I've seen to fix it. I sbf'd after trying different things for an hour.
As for market apps not installing, sort of had that issue too. It wouldn't install old versions when I went to My Apps>All. Had to search Play for the latest versions. Happened with hacked and regular market. No real fix, but a dalvik/cache wipe plus a market cache wipe and I haven't had that problem since.

Ext3 and ext4 are different Linux file systems. By default (stock kernel) our file systems were mounted as either ext3. Custom kernels give us support for mounting /data, /cache, /sd-ext as ext4 (and ntfs/ext4 support on /sdcard -- no 4gb file size limit). Data on ext4 file systems should be better protected in case the phone freezes and you have to pull the battery.
Needless to say, if you're not sure if you're on ext3 or 4 and you didn't mess with the option in the bootmenu, you're formatted as ext3.
