Evo capping all graphics to 30FPS [OFFICIAL FIX!] - EVO 4G General

Update 9/22/10: Our 30FPS Saga has finally come to an end. HTC has released an OTA that officially uncaps the evo! HOORAY! To all of you who have contacted Sprint and HTC: THANK YOU! It made a difference.
If you are unrooted, simply go look for the update under your phone's settings.
If you are rooted and want to keep root, head over to developer section and download one of the many ROMs available with the latest OTA 3.29.651.5 .
-------------

The update will supposedly be released tomorrow. Will update this post when/if it happens.

-------------------------------
Update 6/14/10: Got a call from Dan Hesse's Office(CEO). Here's what happened:
1. Sprint has reached out to HTC about this issue. They acknowledge the problem and said they are working on a Firmware update that will address this. However, they could not give us an exact time frame.
2. The engineer at HTC encouraged us to go to HTC support and send emails to them about this issue so it gets more attention internally, and hopefully speed things up.
Also, I asked her to relay a message to Dan Hesse, Saying that this might not seem like a big deal at first, but it is in fact a huge one. Customers, especially those coming from an iPhone, expect their phones to "just work", and even if they don't notice it at first, that 30fps cap will get them frustrated at some point, and they will erroneously attribute it to developer, the phone or Sprint, hurting everyone in the process.
She also said Sprint wants this resolved, but they are pretty much at HTC's mercy right now.
Alright boys and girls, it's time to bother HTC!
Visit HTC support here:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/e-mail
and send your Email to them.
At this time I would advise against sending "template" emails because once they start receiving several of the same they can just filter them out. Remember, they are a huge company, they have the tools. Speak with your heart this time.
=====================
Update 6/12/10: Check out the end of this post. Help us contact HTC and Sprint about this issue. Even if you don't own an Evo. HTC got away with it twice already. Let's at least make sure this issue is well known. Like a developer said:
This is like buying a brand new corvette and finding out it has a governor on it limiting it to 100 horsepower. If a car manufacturer did this, there would be a class action lawsuit instantaneously. Don't be shy guys, let the world know how you feel!

Update 6/11/10: I got a response from one of Sprint's executive team. He has asked the product team to investigate and will follow up with me afterwards. Will keep you guys posted.
HTC is capping all graphics , 2D AND 3D, at only 30fps max. This is having a negative impact on the responsiveness of the system in general, and for developers that rely on real time game development.
See this:
http://groups.google.com/group/andr.../1f0bd2cccc047ac3?show_docid=1f0bd2cccc047ac3
And this:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=8942 Please star the issue on that page so more people, and hopefully htc, will be aware of the problem.
I have also tested this app:
http://www.typhon4android.org/androidbugs/droid2dtest-21/
When I run the app, "Clock FPS" is trying to push 60fps but it is limited by the display at 30hz, only to show 30fps max.
This also explains why the evo 4g is consistently getting terrible graphics benchmark scores. The Nexus One, despite having the same processor and gpu, is not affected by this problem.
Is this ever going to be fixed?

wow..... I should toss that app on froyo and try it.

No change with froyo... that's not good.

You say HTC is capping the framerate.. Is this a hardware cap, then? Meaning, do you see this on a rooted / custom rom? I'm using unrevoked for root, so I can't test..

Oh no. This is like the HTC tilt all over again with the graphics not living up to their potential.
Sent from my HTC Evo using tapatalk.

Could it have anything to do with the HDMI out? Maybe they're trying to sync to a framerate that their HDMI implementation can handle. Just guessing.

Well how fast can the screen refresh that's what the fps should be locked to

I thought so too at first but then I did some googling. A similar thing happened to the Motorola Droid when they received the 2.1 update:

So, hopefully, it's a setting in the ROM somewhere...

Remember, HTC makes the Nexus One too. I doubt it would be hardware, but that is strange.

Sorry, I dont buy it. Nexus one does it with nary a hiccup, and it has the same exact resolution, processor and gpu.
I can also confirm it's not the LCD that's limited-- When you flash the experimental Froyo rom, the Nexus One-style "X" boot screen animation is clearly running at 60fps. So it looks like this is happening at boot.

nice that means that it must be in software. Hopefully if we can fix this we can also hack the HDMI to output at a higher fps

NOOOO! This was the reason when I had my tilt that justified the switch to iphone 3g, Then I got a 3gs, and I swore to never buy another HTC product again because of the tilt and there lack of gpu drivers. I swear if that type of crap is going on again I'm returning my Evo and getting iphone 4. And I really like my evo!

HTC is really playing this game still? I went from my Tilt to my iPhone back to HTC and the Evo and now they are doing the same crap with the Tilt?
Eh.... Annoying.

I swore I'd never get anothet HTC phone after the Touch and Mogul...the EVO made a liar out of me...but maybe not for long.

Just got a Evo 4G and I feel screwed

I gotta say after playing with the Evo I feel screwed over by htc on my nexus one. They went all out on the evo 4g and gave the nexus one spotty 3g, crap touch screen, messed up buttons, manufacturing defects, alignment issues and not even close to the quality and attention to detail as the evo. All the buttons are in the right places and the look and feel is spot on. Does anyone else think they did this for a reason? Maybe show Google not to step on there toes?
Did you seriously just make this post?
not to mention there already is a post of this going.
I believe the dedicated buttons work great after the update is that the main thing the evo has over the nexus other than 3g? I do feel a little ripped off regarding the old touchscreen but thats all, I've never had the 3g issue and with flash, tethering and the rest of froyo improvements I'm falling in love with android all over again. Incidentally how is the evo Screen size? Having the nexus I don't think a bigger screen would be comfortable to carry. The nexus seems the perfect sizesize, but I have a feeling you're going to tell me the evo screen size is the best ever...
The phones were made at different points, so obviously there's improvement to be made. You could cry foul if they came out at the same time.
Everyone is entitled to their respective opinions.
With that being said, this thread will slowly turn into a heated debate about why each phone is 'better', equal or whatever, despite the obvious attempt to cause this.
are you joking me
the nexous one is a top notch phone PERIOD..........

I see where your coming from I guess (when deciding to make a new post). However this post will turn out just like that one where you'll have 100 replies and people defending the nexus one. Odds are i'm probably wrong about this one but I feel you might have been better off posting in that thread instead of starting a new one.

Thank you for the link. I haven't read that thread and didn't know it was related to my post. After reading a few pages I can see what you are talking about.
Different and newer hardware and HTC Sense is a pretty spot-on UI experience for the most part.
It's almost like comparing apples to oranges honestly. I look more at the network I plan on using first. Personally a GSM network is preferred because of simultaneous mobile web and calls.
EVO 4G is a beast though, definitely a nice piece of hardware. But I am definitely happy with my N1.
Though I'd be happier if I got me some final release version of FroYo on it.

That's a bogus argument. HTC (as well as every other manufacturer) has been making good quality hardware for awhile. He's not complaining about features, he's complaining about quality. Issues with 3G reception, touchscreen buttons, touchscreen digitizer are quality and testing related and are not acceptable on ANY phone at this point in time regardless of other features or pricetag. I'm not saying the Nexus One has these issues (it seems like many due experience them) but Im just saying these are trivial things that should work flawlessly.

I will say that some of these issues have been "fixed," so to speak, by HTC sense.
As for the touchscreen issue, I am pretty sure this a hardware issue in that the EVO 4G simply has a better touchscreen. I could be wrong on that though.

The nexus one touch sensor is crap. Cant handle two inputs. The Evo 4g is unlimited. The games are going to be sick. HTC had access to Synaptics ClearPad 3000+ and the new screen in the evo 4g but they used a old clearpad 2000. WHY?

Surely that will change, but as of now, for gaming, it doesn't matter much.

Yes the graphics need work but they just got opengl es 2.0. I think the next round of games should be better. The problem with n1 and games is when you play fps or race games that use two input points. The nexus one will go crazy and make it unplayable. The same games on the Evo 4G play fine. Thats the first thing I tested.

This phone will not have anything past 1ghz snapdragons we all know as of right now. The new line isn't coming until the end of the year.
I think I might give up my nexi, I've been dying for a keyboard phone comparable to the nexus one. This may be it.
Not me. I rooted mine when the 1-click root app came out and it gave me more reasons to keep mine. I love it even more! I can't believe i thought of replacing it.

This is one of those cases where MHz won't matter one bit. The chip has a whole bunch of new features not found on the N1, including many hardware multimedia accelerators. Plus, you really won't notice much of a different with just a 200MHz drop.
With a faster radio, more memory and better hardware acceleration, the CPU speed becomes less important.
I'll upgrade if it offers speedy HD video, HDMI out and more memory as those are the things I'm missing on my N1.
The phone will have the scorpion chip set which equivalent too the snapdragon, but with a better cpu and wvga screen

It's going to be hard for me to give my Nexus up as well. I'm still trying to weigh my options on whether I should just go ahead and get the G2 or keep my N1. If the screen size is not 4.3" I will be keeping my Nexus until a 4.3" T-Mobile Android deice come out.

I'm still waiting for a 1.3-1.5 GHz phone before replacing my Nexus.
Honestly, im waitng for the next Dev phone, personally the mod community on the Nexus One is far superior to anything it could be on any other phone. So i'll wait, im not a slide out keyboard guy anyway. Google tends to release a new "dev" phone for each major release:
G1 - 1.0 &1.5

I feel bad for idiots... -.-

I was just browsing the ATT site cause I'm due for an upgrade. The only phone running android other than the aria worth getting is the captivate, but I still love my aria and its gonna take one monster of a phone to get me away from it. Anyway, I stumbled on the aria's product page and read a few 1 star reviews from the "average" person... They generally hate this phone, they don't understand simple concepts... like using the phone correctly... It's so depressing, I'd hate to be such a primitive minded person in these technology driven times, I'd post a link to a guide to root the phone if I didn't already know att would delete it, and possibly punish me for breach of contract.

While it's very l33t and in line with this forum in general to root your phone, in no way does the Aria require rooting. Anyone giving it a 1 star rating probably should just stick to Razr's.
My wife's Aria is stock and she loves it. It's fast, smooth, and besides her seemingly ALWAYS getting "select vs dial" confused in the dialer, she has zero problems with it. Only minor problem she has is seemingly inconsistent battery life.. Sometimes she'll get 2 days, sometimes it's 12 hours, even with her fairly constant type of usage.

Also, please don't dis the Razr :'( My last phone was a gold Razr V3xx which had bookworm on it with a game scoring over 28 mil, and the sickest tower defense game ever put on a phone via .jar files... But I do get your point

Yeah, it will. There's some super bulky prototype models you can go buy from personal sellers that run you about 300 bucks and is basically an N64 just with a custom plastic molded case for handheld use. But I bet a hacked 3DS will be around much sooner than a phone with native N64 support... Hopefully, I'm wrong, but the best part is, doesn't matter if I am!

To the untrained eye the graphics of a PS1 and N64 may LOOK to be very similar. But there are WAY more factors involved other than how the graphics may appear to look from each system. An N64 emulator as I've read to believe requires almost 5 times the power of the hardware required to run a PS1 emulator. Possibly even MORE hardware power is required depending on the game you want to play (like games that used the expansion pack). The N64 portable emu (short of a modified N64) is a little further off than you may think... But I wouldn't be surprised if some betas spring up sometime this year.
i agree.. its the most simple interface you can possibly get. menu/settings
menu/apps menu/wallpaper
if you want something done, push fking menu! xD

That's funny because I'd be willing to bet that the guys at gsmarena, engadget, and phonearena have 10x the inside scoop than any of your ATT manager buddies ever will.

WOW... Guess my ATT manager buddies didn't have the scoop before Engadget!
Oops... so its not the dual core... but still knew about it before Engadget!

EVO 3D will have Wimax and LTE and DRM and night vision

http://androidforums.com/2456934-post597.html
If (big IF) all that turns out to be true...I'll give my left arm for an Evo 3D.
The LTE+Wimax, and LTE backwards compatibility for the previous 4G phones sounds a bit unrealistic though, especially since the phone is supposed to be announced tomorrow, and the only thing we know about Sprint+LTE is unsubstantiated rumors.

Hahaha "EVO 3D: The first great phone for night hunters and perverts!"
Edit: Figures that my 500th post would contain the word perverts...
By night vision I assume that means low light video recording? I can totally see them giving a bunch out at celebrity gatherings and seeing a flood of sex tapes hit the net. Regardless, it's a feature I wouldn't mind having.
We will see what happens tomorrow.

wow maybe i should go with this phone!
I want, I want!

But no GPU?!
Adreno 220 I thought I heard
I cannot wait for tomorrow, to find out how much of this stuff is true. If half of what that guy said is accurate, I am on board for the Evo 3d. Without a doubt.
Adreno 220 is what I've heard as well.
Yep aderno

How about the tsa version camera? It can see through clothes in 3d
A 5 min google search conducted by me and reading resources that may or may not be true I conclude that the 220 is twice as powerful as tegra2

I've heard that as well plus, if BSOD over on AC is to be believed, it can be overclocked x2.
Can't wait for the announcement tomorrow to see how much of this is actually true. This phone is going to be a beast.
Well the guy seems to have factual evidence to it. So we will see if what he said there is real when they release it tomorrow :x

Anyone else jumping ship to the Nexus tomorrow?

My faithful Hero's quest ends today. I'll be retiring it to my dust shelf, or passing it along to my brother in law so his quest may continue. So many thanks to all the hard work you guys have put in to the Hero. You all helped me out a lot.

Nope...Epic 4G and/or Evo 3D
I've had a Hero for about 15 months and I'm thinking about moving on. One thing I simply cannot abide is the laggy touch and display response on all of these phones. I just watched the Evo 3D video from Engadget and was very disappointed by the slow response of the phone. That's exactly my problem with it. I want instantaneous reaction to the actions I perform. I want snappy response, not press the screen and wait several seconds for the command to be recognized (if it is recognized at all).
My Hero currently runs a freshly installed CM 7.02 (with all appropriate wipes performed) with very few installed apps. It's just slow. I learn to live with it and expect that type of sluggish performance, but it's still annoying. For anyone else who uses my phone, it's next to impossible for them to comprehend that commands aren't immediately translated into action on the phone, and it ends in them button pressing, getting frustrated, and putting the phone down or asking me for help. Sure, maybe they could be more patient, but they're also used to instantaneous response. That's what I want, too, and I'm waiting for a Sprint smartphone to provide that.
Any recommendations?

It's a great phone, since it's not weighed down by Samsung's awful software, but just too late to consider, as long as the 3D can be given the joy of CM.
Not as long as rom's are still being developed for the Hero.. Its all I need and I don't (anymore) get stuff because its new..or supposedly better.LoL. Hero does everything i need it to do...
Samsung and Motorola are dead in my eyes as far as cellphones go. The Evo 3D is the only viable upgrade.

Well, to be fair, despite any biases towards (well, against) the iPhone/iOS in general, it is very, very snappy and responsive.
No Android offering will be on par until it finally utilizes hardware acceleration, which I think SHOULD be in "Ice Cream". At least I pray it will be, as there is absolutely no reason for them to not finally implement it already. It's a little embarrassing that we are getting these dual-core beasts that still aren't quite as smooth as a year or two old iPhone... gah.

He could've explained his reasoning for just saying "get an iphone", which he did so no problems, but even if he didn't, just for future reference check the link below. I just read this thanks to il Duce and the OP of this thread and I now know to expect answers like the one you got earlier.

edit: that link was posted with the idea of helping you and others in mind...also i have a question for you...since you're not going to the iphone what phone are you upgrading to, i'm curious since it isn't the popular evo 3d or the old news but still "new" news iphone?

I appreciate your efforts to help me, but "this ain't my first rodeo." Or something. Certainly at some point it doesn't have to be hardware acceleration, right? Surely there is a decent multithreaded software solution for dual cores in the works, because this terrible lag is difficult to put up with. When I need the phone to work FAST, it works slowly, like when I'm driving and just want to scroll through contacts to make a call. Voice calling is not much of a solution. Yes, I call people when I'm driving. Sue me.

I'm not a newb. I've been doing PC stuff for ages. Hell, back in 1995 when Quake was the first internet server-based multiplayer fps game, we were making up this type of lingo and the typical responses. I was 20 then. The problem is, this guy was just being an unoriginal douche. He kangs his entire schtick. Meh.
Thanks, though. How about a suggestion for a SPRINT Android smartphone that doesn't suffer from these lag issues?
Hardware acceleration will help out a ton, especially since most non-low end phones made after the HD2 (yes, not an Android phone, but same processor/gpu has Nexus 1, EVO, etc) has a GPU worth a damn.
