I gotta say after playing with the Evo I feel screwed over by htc on my nexus one. They went all out on the evo 4g and gave the nexus one spotty 3g, crap touch screen, messed up buttons, manufacturing defects, alignment issues and not even close to the quality and attention to detail as the evo. All the buttons are in the right places and the look and feel is spot on. Does anyone else think they did this for a reason? Maybe show Google not to step on there toes?
Did you seriously just make this post?
not to mention there already is a post of this going.
I believe the dedicated buttons work great after the update is that the main thing the evo has over the nexus other than 3g? I do feel a little ripped off regarding the old touchscreen but thats all, I've never had the 3g issue and with flash, tethering and the rest of froyo improvements I'm falling in love with android all over again. Incidentally how is the evo Screen size? Having the nexus I don't think a bigger screen would be comfortable to carry. The nexus seems the perfect sizesize, but I have a feeling you're going to tell me the evo screen size is the best ever...
The phones were made at different points, so obviously there's improvement to be made. You could cry foul if they came out at the same time.
Everyone is entitled to their respective opinions.
With that being said, this thread will slowly turn into a heated debate about why each phone is 'better', equal or whatever, despite the obvious attempt to cause this.
are you joking me
the nexous one is a top notch phone PERIOD..........
go over to The EVO XDA bro

I see where your coming from I guess (when deciding to make a new post). However this post will turn out just like that one where you'll have 100 replies and people defending the nexus one. Odds are i'm probably wrong about this one but I feel you might have been better off posting in that thread instead of starting a new one.
Enjoy your evo though

Thank you for the link. I haven't read that thread and didn't know it was related to my post. After reading a few pages I can see what you are talking about.
Different and newer hardware and HTC Sense is a pretty spot-on UI experience for the most part.
It's almost like comparing apples to oranges honestly. I look more at the network I plan on using first. Personally a GSM network is preferred because of simultaneous mobile web and calls.
EVO 4G is a beast though, definitely a nice piece of hardware. But I am definitely happy with my N1.
Though I'd be happier if I got me some final release version of FroYo on it.

That's a bogus argument. HTC (as well as every other manufacturer) has been making good quality hardware for awhile. He's not complaining about features, he's complaining about quality. Issues with 3G reception, touchscreen buttons, touchscreen digitizer are quality and testing related and are not acceptable on ANY phone at this point in time regardless of other features or pricetag. I'm not saying the Nexus One has these issues (it seems like many due experience them) but Im just saying these are trivial things that should work flawlessly.

I will say that some of these issues have been "fixed," so to speak, by HTC sense.
As for the touchscreen issue, I am pretty sure this a hardware issue in that the EVO 4G simply has a better touchscreen. I could be wrong on that though.

The nexus one touch sensor is crap. Cant handle two inputs. The Evo 4g is unlimited. The games are going to be sick. HTC had access to Synaptics ClearPad 3000+ and the new screen in the evo 4g but they used a old clearpad 2000. WHY?
New touch sensor on the Evo 4G.

Honestly, beyond the iPhone OS, I have yet to see many major gaming endeavors on other mobile OSes, Android included.
Surely that will change, but as of now, for gaming, it doesn't matter much.
I'm curious, how much did you pay for the EVO and whats your monthly bill like?

Yes the graphics need work but they just got opengl es 2.0. I think the next round of games should be better. The problem with n1 and games is when you play fps or race games that use two input points. The nexus one will go crazy and make it unplayable. The same games on the Evo 4G play fine. Thats the first thing I tested.

I came over from a 3GS as well, and I might not have, if it wasn't for the iOS4 update. My 3GS was jailbroken, and set up really well, but I'm a big cycling fan (loved seeing HTC-Columbia featured in that Desire video, even if I did have to watch that tool Cavendish win...like I don't have to see that enough already), and the Tour de France app was crashing on 3.1.1, so I had to "upgrade". Even after jailbreaking iOS4, it was just never the same. Except for the camera and display, my 3GS would have handed the new iPhone its ass, in terms of functionality.
That said, I'm a longtime linux geek, and I did want an android phone, plus the school I go to, their website is in flash, and I do homework through it sometimes...very doable on the Evo, impossible on the iPhone.
Oh, and now I get through phone conversations without losing the call.

And making this thread serves no purpose.
The vibrant forum is filled with WorksForMe™ kiddies.
Harder hands would demolish the plastic Vibrant...
And I agree those here give the MT4g way too much undeserved slack. The phone's only megatives compared to the Vibrant are the screen (subjective), screen size,.and internal storage size. Maybe the SoC is marginally worse. Almost everything else is superior. Sammy botched the Galaxy S.

I work in a warehouse during the day and on engines in my leisure time. You won't find soft hands here, and you won't find any damage on my vibrant. Unless you've crushed your phone in your hand without trying, you're one of those "soft hand" people, at least by your logic. This phone is plenty tough, maybe not scuff resistant but it certainly isn't any weaker than any other normal phone out.
And I've been with tmobile for 6 years and have had very little trouble. Sometimes I'd wish for wider coverage, but that's my only gripe on the road. Maybe the coverage in your area is poor, but I've lived in every corner of texas and have had coverage, no dropped calls.

That has to be hyperbole right? I've had my vibrant for some months now. The amount of lag I have experienced has been sparse and when apparent, understandable if not completely tolerable. It has never crossed my mind to complain about the lag with this phone. What are you guys trying to do with your phones that you are experiencing this kind of stuff with?
I'm seriously beginning to think there are some wildly different vibrant experiences out there. There have to be, because that is just not the case for myself. I have installed lagfixes before and seen no discernible real world speed difference besides those seen in benchmarks.
It's got to be one of two things. Some vibrants are messed while others are not. Or. Half of you people are insanely impatient and will put up with nothing but absolute perfection. Something i've yet to witness on any phone, be it iPhone or HTC.
I don't think I've ever bought an electronic device with some kind of firmware that I haven't at least looked into hacking, rooting, cracking or whatever you want to call it.
Since I've had my phone its been awesome. GPS works, its fast, its modded and I do what I want with it. Anybody that buys a Vibrant and doesn't root it doesn't have a clue what they are missing. Not that if you don't root it you don't have a clue, but your are simply missing out. Now to leave this phone for well something that isn't even close is a shame.
I've played with what your replacing it with and honestly I'm not sure what you are thinking, but then again you dumped your Vibrant so I'm really not sure what you are thinking. My buddy and his iPhone4 wishes he could play the videos I play and had the freedom we have. Man it all starts at root.

Nope...Epic 4G and/or Evo 3D
I've had a Hero for about 15 months and I'm thinking about moving on. One thing I simply cannot abide is the laggy touch and display response on all of these phones. I just watched the Evo 3D video from Engadget and was very disappointed by the slow response of the phone. That's exactly my problem with it. I want instantaneous reaction to the actions I perform. I want snappy response, not press the screen and wait several seconds for the command to be recognized (if it is recognized at all).
My Hero currently runs a freshly installed CM 7.02 (with all appropriate wipes performed) with very few installed apps. It's just slow. I learn to live with it and expect that type of sluggish performance, but it's still annoying. For anyone else who uses my phone, it's next to impossible for them to comprehend that commands aren't immediately translated into action on the phone, and it ends in them button pressing, getting frustrated, and putting the phone down or asking me for help. Sure, maybe they could be more patient, but they're also used to instantaneous response. That's what I want, too, and I'm waiting for a Sprint smartphone to provide that.
Any recommendations?

It's a great phone, since it's not weighed down by Samsung's awful software, but just too late to consider, as long as the 3D can be given the joy of CM.
Not as long as rom's are still being developed for the Hero.. Its all I need and I don't (anymore) get stuff because its new..or supposedly better.LoL. Hero does everything i need it to do...

Well, to be fair, despite any biases towards (well, against) the iPhone/iOS in general, it is very, very snappy and responsive.
No Android offering will be on par until it finally utilizes hardware acceleration, which I think SHOULD be in "Ice Cream". At least I pray it will be, as there is absolutely no reason for them to not finally implement it already. It's a little embarrassing that we are getting these dual-core beasts that still aren't quite as smooth as a year or two old iPhone... gah.

I appreciate your efforts to help me, but "this ain't my first rodeo." Or something. Certainly at some point it doesn't have to be hardware acceleration, right? Surely there is a decent multithreaded software solution for dual cores in the works, because this terrible lag is difficult to put up with. When I need the phone to work FAST, it works slowly, like when I'm driving and just want to scroll through contacts to make a call. Voice calling is not much of a solution. Yes, I call people when I'm driving. Sue me.

I'm not a newb. I've been doing PC stuff for ages. Hell, back in 1995 when Quake was the first internet server-based multiplayer fps game, we were making up this type of lingo and the typical responses. I was 20 then. The problem is, this guy was just being an unoriginal douche. He kangs his entire schtick. Meh.
Thanks, though. How about a suggestion for a SPRINT Android smartphone that doesn't suffer from these lag issues?
Hardware acceleration will help out a ton, especially since most non-low end phones made after the HD2 (yes, not an Android phone, but same processor/gpu has Nexus 1, EVO, etc) has a GPU worth a damn.

a little off topic, but ill still ask. i just got the nexus s a few hours ago. i know the nexus s gsm is rooted but is the nexus 4g rooted? and if so where can i find a guide? i have two that im looking at but there not for the nexus s 4g. just want to make sure if the rooting process is the same or not before breaking something.

Nexus S 4G is sharing the forum with the GSM counterpart much like HeroC did at the beginning. Try this link...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071500
I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

The Epic is an excellent device. Pretty much any issue we have has been fixed by the great devs here, but remember that the E3D and GS2 will be available soon. You might wanna wait and see first.

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks. I know both are coming, the ED3 probably much sooner...I don't think I'll spend $200 on one of those phones though...but I am hoping the regular EVO can be free somewhere soon

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

I have had my epic since jan maybe before but it seems like forever the phone stock is great I had no issues with any of the stock apps and functions. Now that I'm rooted and on syndicate frozen 1.1.1 its like having a brand new phone again. my opinion is get it you can't go wrong with it the slide out keyboard is great for games but with swype I almost never use it. Hope this helps.

You wont find a better phone on the Sprint network for the same price for at least another 6-9 months (Free).

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.
I do apologize about the miss information about the Nexus 4g, I was under the impression that it has a snapdragon processor. I believe that's the E3D. Thanks for the correction guys.

i love my epic..... had a semi brick the other day had me worried but odin did the trick even had a screen that ppl well versed in the epic language have never seen but with some persistance i got her back up and running
If you root it, its a good phone.
GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I wanna play Nova with a gyro not a touch screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL MOVE OVER TO IPHONE JUST FOR THe GYRO, if still no phones/apps on android support it in Nov.
the keyboard is great for using Terminal Em. or punching in passwords. But ya it might not be worth the bulk..

I must be confused about what you mean by Gyro
I play quite a few games that operate via tilting the phone only, rather than the touch screen
Looks like Sprint is going to have to give me a new phone since I'm on my third Shift since release, and this one has major antenna problems (lose data, can't make calls half the time, texts are intermittent, etc.). So I'm wondering if I should try one more shift or actually get an Evo. I'm not getting a Samsung device, they just feel like crap to me.
I don't know what to do darnit lol.
You could see if they'll give you an EVO 3D.

I say stick with the Shift . But I'm biased. Love my Shift, hands down best phone I've ever owned. I had an EVO before this. The EVO is a great phone. But a little too big for the pocket. Plus the Shift can be OC'd way higher. But either way your good. Plenty of Dev's on both phones. Plus you can run some awesome Mik roms on both. Just my two cents.

I'd stick with shift, but my question is did u ever root your phone or anything? Seems like u were having strange issues might just have needed a custom Rom or something? Just my input though

I looked at the 3D, but it just seems gimmicky to me.
The Evo is likely my best option, but I'll certainly miss the keyboard. I even thought about the Nexus S or Epic, but I just hate the feel of Samsung phones, so I don't think they're an option. I'm not entirely sure they'll let me get another Shift, but if they do you can bet I'm asking for a new one and not a refurb
I've rooted all three Shifts multiple times, the first two were hardware issues (loose keyboard--me being too picky, then a loose ear speaker). Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

if you think the 3d part of the evo3d is gimmicky, just ignore it and realize its a really a CDMA version of the HTC Sensation. One of the best phones on the market.
The shift is a great device, but the 3d blows it out of the water.

Isn't the screen always in a "3D mode" though? I've only seen a 3D once, and only from the side, and it looked pretty weird at that angle. I'll have to go to a store and check it out
ok i my shift has a major antenna problems also i got one phone sent out but do they still change the phones for you?? and whats the $ for say a reg evo . i got my phone over clocked to 1.5 and sprint keeps telling me slower data due to the cpu is 800 not 1ghz like the evo i wish i could tell sprint a thing or too

Well, if you've still got the problems keep calling and complaining. The Evo and the Shift should be an even swap I think. I haven't called them to find out yet.
Granted, I'm on an employee plan and go through employee care tech support, so the rules and prices are a little different.
edit: guess I didn't have a choice...they're sending me yet another Shift, and probably another freaking refurbished one at that.
Well on the upside, since your on your fourth Shift. My buddy works for Sprint. You can actually request/ demand it be a new one. Also, if your unsatisfied with this one new/other. You can request they give you a different device equal to the Shift.

If I could get them to exchange my Shift for a refurb, I'd never activate it and have it on ebay so fast...then get something else...something that can be rooted. For now, I'll just be patient.

They told me that after my third one I could get a "like device", which I took to mean any device of a similar price range, guess I was wrong, or they were yanking my chain.

A refurb shift is likely not upgraded to 2.3.3 or whatever the upgrade was to--yet. This one's a week old and didn't come upgraded, so root was quite easy, even though it didn't help
It's definately a plus if you can still root it.

I don't actually work for them, my fiance does lol. The biggest perks about the employee plans are the much lower prices, yearly upgrades, no actual contract, and quicker tech support.
well, I got the new phone in the mail, activated it this morning. Other than having a somewhat loose slider again (which is going to be extremely annoying) it looks like it might work.
updated to 2.3.3 though, so that kind of sucks at the moment.

When my wife had the Samsung moment, I had to go through so many devices before they would offer me something comparable. Which was the intercept, an even worse phone. Not even the Hero was an option! Ended up emailing [email protected] and then reporting to BBB and finally got my upgrade reset. It was a total PITA.
