[INFO] 4G in St. Louis - EVO 4G General

Figured some of y'all might be as interested in this as me.
I was in a Sprint corporate store yesterday and I talked to a techie. They said they're currently testing 4G in South County at one of the stores (don't remember which, sorry) and that it's live to everyone who drives by. They said they had a full launch slated for the metro area in about 3 weeks.
He went on to say that they will continue to improve 4G in the metro for the rest of this year, then around March or May of next year, they are gunna try and cover the outlying areas (think Festus, Arnold, etc. although probably not as far South as Farmington.)
Regards,
Jesse

Thanks for the update. I live in the Southwest Garden area, and I can usually get a 4G connection, but its usually not too much faster than the 3G so it's not really worth it yet (though sometimes it's much faster than other times). Hopefully as they continue to upgrade it the speed improves.

Sprint 4G in North Chicagoland!

I'm amazed, day 1 of launch I didn't get 4G anywhere except Chicago!
Over the past couple days I am getting 4G even in Round Lake & Grayslake, most surprising if you are aware of the area. It's relatively lower income in the area compared to the suburbs 10min South.
Around Lincolnshire I hit 3.8Mbps! I was under the impression 3Mbps was the cap, that's what I get (solid speed) when I checked 4G in Chicago.
I wont lie, I'm impressed, 4G was scarce just a week ago!
No 4g for me :<
You are lucky....
I live in Lake Forest - No 4g for me, and it's a very affluent area. Worse, I get NO SIGNAL in my home (3g / 4g, cell).
I specifically left AT&T because of dropped calls and lack of 3g service. I may have to leave Sprint because of no service....
Any idea if they will be adding towers anytime soon?
I wish there was a way to test Verizon before I switched again.
I have no idea, but hey...you've got another 2+ weeks to decide.
That does stink though, in general I've experienced good service...have you upgraded the radio on your Evo? That makes a difference.
I've rooted, and have a de-crapified build with the latest updates.
The lack of service also kills my battery, as it's continually trying to connect unless I go into airplane mode.
Major bummer :<

Call retentions and tell then you get lousy voice service. They gave me a free Airave and waved the monthly charge. Won't help with data much, with data, but works great for voice. You need a broadband connection with it.
I'm in Evanston and I've picked up 1 or 2 two bars of 4G while outside. Inside I had to get an Ariave. Speeds haven't been impressive so far, 3G actually has been faster when I've tested.
Have you tried flashing a verizon radio to your Evo? Maybe a better signal.
if you go downtown you get what i have in my sig
at my place by midway i get about 4mbps. yesterday i was testing and i was getting around 1 to 1.5 but today testing again i get around 3.5 to 4.5. maybe the weather was messing things up yesterday....i was testing while it was raining. today its gorgeous outside...
No 4G around Waukegan, IL either. Though I get full 3G coverage in and around this area, so I don't mind since data still loads pretty quick.
Grayslake has a 4Gtower - from there it's a long run south till the next. Lake Forest doesn't want any towers on their precious skyline so signal there sucks. Drives me nuts.
I ride the train into downtown from Grayslake so I've been watching 4g rollout closely - will stick with the Hero for a bit yet I suspect. No compelling reason to work around early upgrade mess and short supply. Yet.

T-Mobile shows NO LOVE for Raleigh, NC!

T-Mobile has no planned HSPA+ coverage for the "Triangle" in North Carolina?
WTF?
I went and checked the new HSPA+ Maps and coverage again. MAN! I live in the Capital of North Carolina (agreeable not exactly a HUGE Metropolis, LOL!) but it IS where Research Triangle Park is, Home to a fair amount of the East Coasts Tech Companies Lucent, Ericsson, VMware, Network Appliance Etc. (IBM where I work has 12,000 ppl here)
If Sprint can put their 4G Wimax here in Raleigh, why are we not even on the "coming soon" maps for TMOUS? I mean, they don;t even have PLANS to implement here? Meanwhile, the HAVE coverage in other places in the state, such as:
Charlotte?
Winston-Salem?
Fayetteville ??
Greensboro????
I mean, Fayetteville?
AARRRRGGGHHH!
I have been scouring these board for a long time, I came out of hiding for this one.
I'm in Raleigh too, I saw that map last week, I was thinking the exact same thing.
I can see Charlotte, it is a big city with a lot of people.
I can see Fayetteville, It is home to a bunch of military who deploy frequently.
I can maybe see Winston-Salem, that is the VA's main medical facility, and a lot of govt buildings.
But seriously, Greensboro???? WTF?
David
Ya it suks, but I just did a speed test (speakeasy) within RTP and I get 3mbps down and 1.5 up, which really is faster than what i'm getting with roadrunner crap at home. (unfortunately I don't get full HSDPA at home, especially downstairs, or else I would just use the phone instead).
Hopefully they'll roll out HSDPA+ in RTP at the start of 2011.
2011 is too long. I want it now *insert tantrum*
yeah but u gotta think... we were the last ppl in the state i think to get 3G coverage.... look at the coverage map. they seem like they bein cheap wit it. its all jumpy and only right near the city thats messed up. hope they have it in MD where i'm from so i can test it out somewhere atleast... this is bs i want 6 mb dl then i might cancel clearwire lol
Well it wasn't 2011, but it was close enough. HSPA+ FTW!!!!

I just read the post and the first thing in my head was chicago got it just a week ago. One of the largest cities in the states. They have a LOT of work set out for them. Give it time.

[CLOSED] More HSPA+ Cities Announced!

T-Mobile announced more cities now with HSPA+ during the myTouch release. Here's the list of cities:
With its latest expansion, T-Mobile’s HSPA+ footprint now includes Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss.; Denver, Colo.; Huntsville, Ala.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Omaha, Neb.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla. T-Mobile expects to reach 100 major metropolitan areas and 200 million people in 2010.
Source: Tmonews.
Personally, the fact that San Jose is getting is best news ever as I get my phone tomorrow. Hopefully T-Mo expands more, bringing the love to more people around this part of town. Chicago gets all the love all the time!
Nice!
I was told by a rep that it wasn't comin in my area till November but this is really good news.
Thanks for the post...

Can't wait!
no where on tmonews does it say these things maybe I looked it over can you provide a link?
SO these cities mentioned are HSPA+ live right now ?
Huntsville, AL \o/
We deserve it more than any other city in the state
Yes, Huntsville is the place to be in AL.
Too bad I live just outside of Huntsville where I only get edge. I look forward to having faster podcast downloads on the way to work though, once we get HSPA+.

Definitely. Awesome city although I was admittedly hesitant to move to the hick-state initially. Great place to be in the tech business. Hopefully Google brings that lovely fiber here...
I actually am in Hazel Green so only get edge and 3G in certain parts, but most of my phone-using day is in Huntsville area. 3G leaked from Huntsville out to Hazel Green rather quickly and I hope it does the same with HSPA+... Actually, the first day I saw 3G symbol ever was within Hazel Green limits on my way to work with my new G1 one day...

It was the same post as their myTouch HD launch. TMo announced it, see if you can confirm it by reading a press release perhaps.
It's not updated at TMo's official website, but it should be here pretty soon.

Couldnt agree more with the fiber comment, this town(Huntsville) could definitely use it, especially considering the massive growth its experiencing right now.
Ive noticed the HSPA+ for about a week now, I used to get intermittant HSPA connections on my myTouch slide a few weeks back, but nothing solid, however in the last week I had nothing but HSPA connection no matter where I was at, including the freakin psuedo-bunker I work in, which I had problems even getting Edge in before.

Wow, a lot of people here from the area.
Could definitely use the fiber boost. It's an extremely tech/research-oriented city. I understand the places where the work is being done already have commercial connections, but... just give me the fiber!
If you don't already know, we have the same icon for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+ (the 'H') so it will be hard to tell what network you're really on.
about damn time they do Phoenix and Tucson at the same time!!!!!!
Man, I cannot wait. Did a random speed test yesterday and got about 7.6Mbps down on 3G.
Yes! Finally San Jose and San Fransisco

Phoenix area has been announced for some time now actually. They have been setting up HSPA+ speeds around my are for the last month now. My N1 has been basicly maxed out at 5-7mbps around my area ^_^
Now I am going to wait tell December to decide on what HSPA+ phone I want =D
Spoke too soon. Still stuck on HSDPA here in Salt Lake City. Guess I still have to wait till November...

Anyone Else from South FL Here?
Anyone else from South FL (Tri-County Area (Palm beach.Broward/Miami Dade))?
If Miami, Ft lauderdale and West Palm are getting HSPA+, does that mean the less-major cities between them are as well?
Like Deerfield, Boca, Delray, Pompano, etc since they are between these three cities

Trust me, you want the G2. The MyTouch is not only ugly, but it has a stupid name. ;-)

I went to the Tmobile store in fort union to play with the G2. The phone had some settings messed up so I couldn't access all the internet, but i could open google's home page and do a basic search. It was MUCH fast than my N1.
Norfolk in the house! I went to the Tmobile store on the 30th, when I received my phone, and the reps were surprised at two things:
I had the phone before them and the fact that the H was showing up in my device.
They concluded that the towers were upgraded, but they were just waiting to "flip the switch".

More 4G Locations for AT&T

So I went to an AT&T store yesterday to get my Atrix replaced (which went very well) and I got on a conversation with the manager about 4G in Tallahassee, FL (where I live). He told me that in Tallahassee, AT&T will have HSPA+ by Q4 2011 and full LTE by Q1 2012. He also told me a lot of the other major cities in Florida (think Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando) are going to get both HSPA+ and LTE by Q4 2011. Just thought I would share...

Wish i was getting that same news in my area (Outskirts of Denver) Not much coverage outside of that area and in the mountains
I'm half way between Miami and Orlando. While I'm currently a TMO customer I guess that will (very unfortunately - I love my unlimited data plan and the price) be changing in the not-too-distant future. But in order to take advantage of 4G I will have to put down my beloved HD2 (sigh). Maybe I'll hold on to 3G a while longer - not like I'm downloading NetFlix 3 times a week or something. Would love for the government to squash this merger as definitely not in the best interests of consumers...

Here we are at the start of the new year and no HSPA+ for Tallahassee with AT&T. 2011 has come and gone, but I'm not really surprised it didn't happen.
I switched to AT&T from Sprint back in September and my service started getting really shoddy the past few weeks at random times. I'm wondering if maybe they are working on upgrading their network, or if that was unrelated.
Either way, I hope it happens soon. Having one of these "4G" phones feels a little worthless without being able to achieve advertised speeds.
Good, work

Sprint LTE Coverage Area

Will this make you finally change your Evo?... check it out and hopefully your area is getting hooked up....

I was looking at that last night and thinking, no matter how great the EVO x is my EVO still holds it's own. Since Michigan will be blanketed in LTE by 2014, I am going to wait, Sprint has great plans, but lightsquared drama has to negatively impact their LTE roll out.
And why buy a phone in 2012 when I can't use 4G until a year or 2 years later. I did that with EVO, and assumed a Verizon kind of roll out.
I really hope Sprint stays on track with LTE roll out and they may retain me otherwise VZW with unlimited data might get my business (yes if u try hard enough u can get it)
Sent from my Synergized Aggressive Lionfish Evo using the XDA app
Yea, it says they will be ready by 2014, but with no specific rollout dates for my area, Michigan, I will be switching to Verizon in the next few months, once they get a nest gen phone like the One X or something similar. Verizon has had working 4g for over a year in my area now. There's no way I'm waiting another 2 years to get it here, and have dial-up speed 3g in the meantime. I gave Sprint 12 years of my business, and I hate to leave, but in today's world data is everything, and I need that to be able to do my job.
With the announcement one the HTC EVO One for Sprint, I am puzzled as to how they decide what cities to start their rollout of LTE. San Antonio? Baltimore? Kansas City?
No New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc.
OK, so Houston and Dallas. Meh.
With an LTE iPhone possibly coming out later this year, how many iPhonies do they think will hang on waiting while both Verizon and AT&T (yuk) are offering LTE in the biggest markets?
Sure, they're saying just wait, but really, how many people have the discipline? I probably will, but only because returning to AT&T is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I hear horror stories about big red nickle and dimeing their customers.
What incentive do I have to get the HTC EVO One when there won't be any LTE here in LA, while my old EVO can still use WiMax?
On an unrelated question: does anyone know if LTE phones automatically switch between 3G and LTE? One thing I always hated about WiMax is having to manually turn it on every time I want to use it!
Pretty sure LTE would require manual control just like WiMax.

Hey now! Some of use are awful excited that Dallas is on that list!
But seriously. I'm wondering if the Dallas choice was because of the AT&T headquarters and the fact that Sprint phones are getting MURDERED by att speeds. (At least where i'm at)
Nothing against Dallas. Texas is a great country.
I just think Sprint needs to make a big splash about LTE if they want to limit churn. Dan Hesse has done an outstanding job so far, imo. But if I were in charge of Sprint, I would make NY,and LA, among the first cities, just for PR purposes.
Even aliens know to blow up one of those two cities when they first invade Earth!

I live in Overland Park. The reason it might be coming to the Kansas City area is because the world headquarters is located in Overland Park, KS? Just a guess lol. (btw, KS has more than tumbleweed in the streets lol)

It's the larger states they don't have much coverage in, so they generalize more.
I'm personally going to switch to the new Evo when it comes out. LTE IN JERSEY AND PHILLY YEA! FIRST PICKS.

Wimax does automatically switch, as long as you leave the 4g radio on all the time - which kills batt like a mofo

FIRST ROUND MARKETS (14):
First round markets have no preceding markets before them. NV OEM's will mobilize in these markets and begin deployment. These markets will deploy slowly as there is a significant learning curve to Network Vision. Most first round markets started between December 2011 and March 2012.

Second round markets start based on First Round markets completing before them. There is a lot of variability of when Second Round markets start, between June/July 2012 and December 2012. It will all depend on how quickly the First Round market deployments go. Some preliminary work is being done in advance in these Second Markets as well. It's possible that if delays begin to occur in the First Round markets, NV OEM's may hire up additional subcontractors and get some key Second Round markets going. I have found the Wimax coverage in Florida to be more than adequate. No, I can't get it at my house, but I have WiFi there. But just about everywhere else when I'm traveling or in even small local cities, I get Wimax.
Sprint is about two years behind on LTE. Not very enticing to stay with them after my contract is up in the Fall. The only reason why I didn't demand early contract termination is because I like my EVO 4G phone and don't feel like spending another $300 on a new Verizon phone at the moment.
