I just read a piece over at Engadget that, according to their tipster, SE is prepping a 5.5" phone with slide out qwerty keyboard, running vanilla Android 2.1 and launching in the fall of this year. The article also mentions that "internally SE doesn't appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet".
Sorry to be pessimistic, but I think we can kiss anything but an (official) upgrade to 2.1 goodbye until well into next year. I think our best bet is that the devs here can achieve root.
Here is a link to the article:
---.engadget.com/2010/06/04/sony-ericsson-prepping-a-5-inch-android-phone-with-qwerty-keyboa?icid=sphere_blogsmith_inpage_engadget[/url]
2.2 for that device. Who's existence may or may not be real.
Which is also just a rumor, man.
If you read on the internet that Apple was planning on building a nuclear bomb and dropping it on Redmond, WA, would you believe it? Especially if Engadget reported it?
Update: We've received word from a second highly-trusted source who says that the display is 5.5 inches (too big to fit in the front pocket), and runs a clean Android 2.1 install. Oh, and it's launching in the fall.
Does this mean ,,,,, we can upgrade to 2.2 just like other android phones.......

Cool? Cool how? In the sense that when you visit their page you are pestered with a webpage so devoted to apple its actually sad? I mean the company makes like three products that all look the same and never change yet the news about what steve jobs crapped out on his toilet last night is top news? Or is it the cocky attitude of the half dead beat loser writers who seen to think saying "company x debuts new product, nobody cares" over and over and over is witty?

So that makes what, 4 devices with 2.2?

Apple did a good job selling it's next product, as usual. it announced a product and with it a firm release date in the very near future.
In contrast, Google screwed up the FroYo release as much as they possibly can. Google I/O announced FroYo on May 20th, with no firm date for release. That was just a few days short of three weeks ago.
Okay, so I am not worried about it to the point that I am ready to go all iPhone on your butts, I am just pointing out that Google has a lot to learn about rolling out a product.
They absolutely do.
Google is acting like a bunch of freaking amateurs.
I'm not the least bit interested in the iPhone, but I am jealous that they guys running Apple seem more professional and capable than do the folks running Google/Android.
It's embarrassing.

Honestly, I feel the same way. Google I/O was great, but it was all just fluff. We didn't get anything solid. Nothing. Google can take some lessons here about giving people something they can hold on too. "Few Weeks" is not enough. I think one of the main reasons that people aren't out in front of Google with pitch forks and torches is that they "leaked" a 2.2 early release so we have a taste of it and something to play with.
All in all, I agree with you 100%, Google has a lot to learn.
On the flip side -
Apple introduced iAds today like they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well, hold the phone (lousy pun intended - deal), those little banners consume data. No biggie data is unlimit- whoa wait. Not it's not. Not anymore on Apple's carrier of choice in the USA.
I don't care how little data those little banners use - to promote a system that not only allows their use but encourages it at the expense of a user locked into a tiered data plan is reprehensible. Does anyone else see an ethical problem with this?
Then there is the practical issue - a user is at the hairy edge of his allotment without buying more data - well except for those pesky little banners that put him over the top. Nice job, Steve Jobs, you butthole.
Likewise, I think any Android PAID app should have all ad banners removed. I know this is a common practice, but it should be a rule. No app with banners should be available at all without a paid counterpart without banners, IMO.
Well sure we don't have a solid release date yet... but we also get more updates then 1 per year. Think on the bright side. At least Froyo 2.2 is already out, if not officially. I don't understand your complaining. Android can already do what the iPhone is just not catching up to.
If our Androids ran on Apple time... we wouldn't see 2.2 until next January. Again, be happy you don't have to wait that long. Be lucky we get what we get. Plus 2.1 runs great anyway.

No, not complaining, stating some facts.
Apple = Solid release dates announced
Google = Vague mentions to releases that are coming "soon".
What should Google do? Follow the Apply model? Announce it 4 months ago, which is what Apple did, then wait until you release a new phone (which actually have hard dates) to launch the new OS... so if Google did this, we would be waiting until the Nexus2 to get FroYo. Sounds great guys! Not...
Take a nap or something.

Simple facts...
Apple= Announcing new phone!
Google= Software update
Two different things. Google gave a firm date for the Nexus One.
And when has Apple ever given a firm date for a software update/bug fix? Oh, wait, they haven't... they have only ever given firm dates for new phone releases, and then said the exact same stuff Google has, that the new OS will be available shortly for other models.

I am just saying that Apple has their act together when it comes to product launches. Google does not. People had a much better understanding of what's coming and when with Apple's Keynote than they did at Google's. It left a lot less speculation and release anxiousness on the table. That makes for happier customers.
No doubt I'd rather be using the version of FroYo we are already looking at than iOS4. That wasn't my point.
Since Apple is now in the ad business (some vague 60% number thrown out there), why not get into the hardware business google?
HTC is a good manufacturer but lacks the innovation needed. Sony designs well but moves at a snails pace and makes horrible decisions.

Very true. And on the flip side of that - Your responsible for yourself as well. So act like an adult instead of getting everyone tense on the forum with childish behavior.
I wouldn't be upset really. Tom Petty did say it best when he said "waiting is the hardest part". However if Froyo isn't finished, then we need to sit back and chill for a little while longer. I would be really mad if we get it (example) July 4th weekend and absolutely nothing has been added or changed.
Looks like we are all in wait and see mode..
Google needs to get it's act together on android. Microsoft is going to come after them, not apple not RIM. Microsoft and Google are aiming for OEMs and OEMs have already complained about google's way of releasing android updates.
I was shocked when Andy Rubin said that they don't have road-maps for version release. Google needs to look at Mozilla for their planning.

A computer security researcher says he plans to release code Thursday that could be used to attack some versions of Google's Android phones over the Internet.
The attack targets the browser in older, Android 2.1-and-earlier versions of the phones. It is being disclosed Thursday at the HouSecCon conference in Houston by M.J. Keith, a security researcher with Alert Logic. Keith says he has written code that allows him to run a simple command line shell in Android when the victim visits a website that contains his attack code.
The bug used in Keith's attack lies in the WebKit browser engine used by Android.
Google said it knows about the vulnerability. "We're aware of an issue in WebKit that could potentially impact only old versions of the Android browser," Google spokesman Jay Nancarrow confirmed in an e-mail. "The issue does not affect Android 2.2 or later versions."

anyway on the good side Maxrfon (dev) has been able to access nand (FINALLY)
so if things go right , we might be able to run some custom ROM`s , who knows even CM6
haha 2.2. dream on. You've got to buy new SE pgone for that.
F*** sony, even if they make 2.2 it would be buggy. All the independent developers make way better stuff than Sony. Just look at the popularity of CyanogenMod and many more mods.

The points you make don't put SE in a better light especially to X10 owners IMO. In fact I would say it reinforces for many why they won't buy another SE phone. Samsung and other brands deal with multiple platforms and are able to get updates to customers in a relatively timely manner.
I personally use an X10 mini pro rooted and running 2.1 and I have to say it is awsome!! it seems even better than some HTC phone on the same range...
I agree on the fact that SE is late compared to other vendors but, hey, android is still lacking some old/basic features like the video dialer on 3G and it seems not even ready for it on Gingerbread.
I think there is no big difference between Xperia on 2.1 or 2.2. It won't make the phone becoming a thunder!!!
still some work to be done in different ways and I hope that developers will do their best to come with new fancy stuff

True, but Samsung started producing Android earlier than Sony Ericsson so they do have the advantage of experience. Besides after the X10i we can be sure that whatever comes next will be with the latest Android OS.

Yeah, I did some research and it was supposed to be WiFi only and/or allow tethering to an existing BB phone to power the tablet.
Smart of them to change their minds, they would not be able to compete without data. 4G can't hurt.
idk it is a blackberry and running their os. could be drama in the long end, but if the hardware is in there for 4g, that makes me believe that you could set it up as a phone with a dialer... could be a combo of old school meets new school.
a Blackberry tablet ...
... who was the fool at Sprint who green-lighted backing this hot mess? RIMs target audience and the typical tablets target audience aren't even close to the same focus groups ... a square peg/round hole failure. Has RIM ever competed in the home user space? Apple at least has worked in that arena, Google clouds absolutely everything, RIM does ... well ... email.
I predict failure here.
looks nice probably be nice for corporate email? I just do not want a tablet tied to contract and do not want some just no name tablet.
From what I hear there's no built in support for calendar or email - those features won't work unless tethered to a blackberry. The os is actually supposed to be pretty impressive though.

To answer that question I'd have to say yes! I love that there is this huge envisioning by the tech world that BB is only used by businesses.
BB may not do nearly as much marketing and focus on non-business users, but I can say that 35-45% of my friends have a BB as their PERSONAL phone. Not because all of the "business" advantage, but because BB makes attractive, ergonomic, simple to use phones and people do buy them. Not to mention brand recognition, how many people do you know that wouldn't know what "blackberry" is?
Now ask that same person about "android" or "WP7"...
The re-written BB OS is actually pretty sleek looking IMO, so I wouldn't say it's a completely horrible idea for Sprint to take this on. Plus many of the businesses would certainly fall into the potential for stocking these up given their employees are all robots equipped with BBs...
Meh...
Just because it's not Google/Apple/Microsoft doesn't mean it won't be a success or that it's a "hot mess".

Having the user base, even though it is dwindling, definitely puts them in a good position still.

I can come up with 100 logical reasons why Android shouldn't be where it's at right now.
I think this tablet could help revive BB.
And I certainly don't think it's silly for Sprint to carry it.
With the lack of Sprint news from CES I was very surprised by this move.. Of all the tablets with that mobile focus mentioned a few months ago the PlayBook was the one I was most excited about. Unfortunately I doubt it will be a star by the time it releases as I've already seen a number of tablets from CES that would mop the floor with the PlayBook.
It'll be 4-6 months before we make another mover forward with a new halo handset IMO.
I would buy one of the blackberry tablets before I bought a crummy apple tablet... Apple is a joke and there os is even more of joke... But android on the other hand is far superior to any other tablet out there. If the android tablets didnt exist I would definitley buy a blackberry tablet though.

Apple was a dying dinosaur before Steve Jobs came back and then they came up with new computer designs and took off with the ibook, ipod, etc.
“The first generation of handsets in our portfolio was about getting the capability out there”, Steve Walker (Acting) global head of marketing for Sony Ericsson told Pocket-lint, in a one-to-one interview at CES in Las Vegas.

I actually do have faith in SE handling their software better with the Arc and such, it just doesn't benefit me at all since I'm married to my X10 at least for the next couple of years or so. I dunno, everything I've felt is necessary to say about their current lineup is said already, it's nice to see SE admitting themselves that they failed. Hi, SE,how about giving us froyo + gingerbread or giving us all an Xperia Arc since X10 owners were all shafted?

I can't agree with this... maybe earlier it was like that, ppl never know about updates, and didn't care much, but now with all this Android hype, more and more people are talking about Android, Froyo, games, MT and stuff, they all are aware of this. And looking how HTC updates their cheap phones like Wildfire and Tatto to froyo... they will ask how come they don't have Froyo on top model SE phone
I'm sure that SE will get what it deserves..
Just saw this article:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolo...d-Google-cancel-Nexus-Prime-phone-launch.html
Wonder why they are delaying? Perhaps it's just not ready?! I was pretty anxious for announce
is this being reported anywhere else? the article cites no source.

Many think it's out of respect for Steve Jobs. He might have his funeral around that time.

Makes sense. Just hope it's not something else. One report is speculating the announce being pushed back to December.
some of articles all link back to this one
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/42445/samsung-nexus-prime-launch-pulled
but it states no source either except, "believe us or else". although im not saying its not true, no one has cited a source.
engadget also has the news including company statement
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/samsung-and-google-postpone-ice-cream-sandwich-and-galaxy-nexus/
Talk about disappointment!
-- update --
people are saying it's out of respect for Jobs..that makes sense.
Google's CEO worked on Apples board so it's out if respect for Steve Jobs & they didn't want to destroy the new iPhone 4s with better phone & OS with all its goodies

theres now rumor that the new unveiling will be in london on the 27th of oct.
Androidcentral says why:
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-officially
Update: Google's explained why the delay. Works for us.
"We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing."
Honestly, it makes sense to me and I don't blame them. I'm just happy I got to see a video of it.
I think it's actually a poor business decision. The business of business is business and business is war. Take every opportunity you can get, and they just gave Apple a big one.
I don't see Apple pushing back the iPhone 4S release.

1) Lackluster 4S launch.
2) Jobs (R.I.P)
3) Delay release?
It would be too much for Apple fans. Really though, we can only speculate.

This is a valid point. One would think that Apple had some idea that Jobs was on his way out. It did strike me as a bit strange that they announced this lackluster new device and announced the death of their CEO the very next day. I dunno.
So you are saying steve waited until they release his device to die? Or you are saying they waited one day to give the announcement that he die?

The Nexus was suppose to compete directly with the Iphone 5.
I hear that the Iphone 5 was suppose to have the newer LTE chip which runs cooler and uses less power. My opinion is the Nexus Prime was suppose to compete directly with the iphone 5. If the iphone has the newer chip which is currently being developed it would own the Nexus Prime.
TBH, if Steve Jobs was healthy, would he delay the release of a phone if someone else iconic passed away? Let's say Bill Gates passed away, would Jobs do the same favor? I think not, he would probably do it to steal the thunder.

I was just at an AT&T Store, they're going to sell that damn Iphone4S next week, with or without Jobs.

Nothing strange about that. Jobs wasn't in good health at all. The disappointment at the release of the iphone4s instead of the iphone5 was enough to nearly kill HEALTHY Apple nerds.
