2.5 OTA update for G1 mid january

just when i thought my g1 was getting out dated and they where going to stop giving us updates.
Even though our Devs are hard at work to get 2.0 and 2.1 working, and for the most part they are very quick and reliable but dont have a working camera unless htc gives us camera drivers we are screwed. but i came across this today and i now have hope. i was going to buy a nexus next month but now that its confirmed that we are getting a 2.5 OTA update i see no need in upgrading just wait until Cyanogen Drizzy or JAC (where are you MLIGN???)get a hold of this one

I don't want to sound like a sceptic, but this sounds scetchy.

let me get this straight....
their new $500 phone is only gonna have 2.1 but the 'outdated' G1 will get 2.5....
....not a hope in hell of them doing that
i will eat my hat if we have 2.5 on the G1 before january is out....
hopefully my hat will taste good...id love this to be true....but its unlikely

If you have the new flavored hats, you might go back for seconds. I'm sure the G1's "2.5" will be 2.0 with flash if it even comes out.

Bit offtopic but isn't flash just an application, technically a browser addon?
It wouldn't need to be in a rom, just on the android market as "Flash" or included in an update to the browser application.

If you piece all the rumors and truly confirmed info from those that get the leaks, the G1 is getting an update sometime in January/February to 2.0/2.1/2.5... something with a 2 at the front. Wow! Such shocking news "confirmed" by an un-named "source" on a site that has also "confirmed" in the past we would be getting 2.0 then 2.1 and now 2.5.

I made a Post with the exact same topic so a mod please lock it/delete it.
The g1/mytouch is not getting android 2.5 it is getting 2.0/2.0.1
They got the mytouch version working but the damn unrooted g1 just doesn't have the space for it so we have to wait so they can slim it down.

Honestly, it's getting annoying to see specific releases of Android for specific phones (e.g., 2.0 for Droid, 2.1 for N1). It's almost like after 1.6, the releases started to become phone specific rather than generic.

And you won't be the first to hear of it either. I promise you, as hard as it is to believe, that HTC and TMO upper management are the first to know. Next up are leaks from devs for HTC to media. Then official confirmation from TMO to the media. Then, about a week after that, if not longer, reps are informed. Don't say otherwise, since some of us work in the business as well, likely for much longer, and have seen how this works.
Reps are always left in the dark until the very end. It is stupid, since reps deal with the public face to face and can make a selling point out of a bunch of the stuff that is kept in the dark, but it is the way it is.

2.5?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHHA!!! You gotta love rumors. The update coming out in January, if any update at all, will more then likely be 2.0 with or without flash. If it's that easy for people to post rumors regarding android, why doesn't someone post something regarding android 17.1 (wedding cake). It's the merge of iPhone & Android!!!! ROTF!

I agree 100%!!! I work for a cable provider, who will remain nameless, and we (reps) are always the last to know about anything. You have no idea how many times a customer called and informed me of a new process/website/service. It amazes me. The front-line associates are ALWAYS the last to know!

Yeah, I work for a cell phone provider, and we get a launch email about a week before the phone launches. I usually know sooner because I am one of the testers for smart phones, but I don't even get all of them, and if I am not testing it I don't know anything until that email... plus, even as a tester, I only get about a 4 week heads up, which is about 2-3 months behind the management picking our phones.
Worst of all, when we do new promos/plans we get our launch info the day before and thus have about 18 hours to read and figure out the new promos, come up with a selling strategy and figure out what sort of customer it is right for.

My T-mobile G2 UK is in for repair from yesterday, stopped recognising a USB connection. It should be back within 2 weeks but I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will flash to 2.1!!!

People talking about it were just rumors. If someone started talking about like a 2.2 w/e now, would you start believing that as well? If it was HTC giving out the release dates and failing to meet them, well then! Show the hate! Otherwise, be patient.

I check the G2 folder at work every day for that 2.1 update.
trust me a t-mobile repair centre will get it way after unbranded phones.

It's still slated for first half 2010 (according to the sprint forums), but the last post on twitter said early first half 2010, which would technically give them about 10 days.
They ARE still planning to push out 2.1 to the Hero and Moment.

Now that we have the 2.1 roms will it really be that big of a deal when it comes out other then for the people on unrooted stock.

who cares about the official update i have given up on phones that sprint are responsible to update lol, sprint sucks i am seriously considering going to verizon these days, verizon has always had the best phone selection, more smart phones than any other provider out there, just so freakin expensive is the only problem

I want that damn update just so I can have a ROM without the audio loss that keeps happening! I can't get away from it no matter where I go.

Sprint is the undisputed king of dropping the ball on updates, had the Hero not been rooted before my 30 days was up I would have gone to Tmo.

I kind of care because I would like to see an Official 2.1 ROM, this leak doesn't let me send emails from exchange just reply.

Your title is a little misleading...
like another member said before me, the admins did not say that. all they said was they don't know..

No one at the BAW forums has come forward and said "this update is not happening May 7."
This is very telling because in the past, they have directly refuted most of the rumored dates.

Its really funny over there on sprints forums.. Someone made an off topic "joke" post and everyone joined it and was just talking. One of the admins got her pantys in a bunch and actually deleted peoples post that were off topic. Yet there was no topic but joking. She locked the thread for it starting to get off topic. Even wengla the admin joined in and said something before it was locked. Its like all the admins over there are so desperate to get action and constantly delete and end threads.
And i remember going threw all the instinct updates.. They were at lease muchhh better at setting general times (within the week) of when an update would come out. If it got moved back they would come out and say, its been moved back, expect it on this date.
The hero update, Sprint has been just simply terrribblee at keeping the customers in the loop.

[Update] 2.2 update coming confirmed

I went into my local tmobile store yesterday in hope of returning my vibrant because of the GPS issue. The employees (2 of them) confirmed to me that the update will come next week with the fix for the GPS issues. They said it'll be along with 2.2 update. I wrapped up my vibrant and bust out of the store as quickly as I went in.. seems like good news to all of us vibrant users. Now its a waiting game... if the update doesn't come next week ill be returning this vibrant for sure.

That's not exactly "Confirmed" chances are that you'll probably be returning that Vibrant next week. Otherwise the Fascinate would probably be shipping with 2.2 and as far as I'm concerned none of the leaked documentation has indicated that it will.

Well, T-Mobile has already confirmed an update in September but I doubt it would be next week. I also doubt that employee knows something that the rest of the world doesn't.

The tmobile rep I talked to on the phone yesterday said the GPS update would be separate from the 2.2 froyo release and should be out in the first 2 weeks of sept and available as an OTA

I went in acting as if i'm just a normal user that doesn't know anything about xda developers or any android website.. (if they actually looked at my phone it has superuser app installed and all that ****, i'll be rejected for sure) on of the guy told me first that the update should fix that and it is a software problem (sigh, i knew that) and he asked me have i read all those on internet and i just simply said NO. he then said the update is gonna fix the GPS issue. I acted more stupid by asking him "do i have to get anything to get an update". he said it'll be rolled out over the air. then another employee, the girl jump into the conversation and asked me about the phone blah blah blah, and she said that the update's coming next week. BTW the GPS is not really a big problem here since i don't really use it.. i tried to return the phone becuz i was thinking i should wait for the G2, i just bought vibrant so far pretty good, applied lag fix and i always get 2200+ on quadrant..
PS. there's no reason for me to lie and speculate things, i just say things that i experienced..

Are you saying you dont think it will come next week, or are you saying not at all? Cuz its definitely getting 2.2, im just not expecting it next week...

I know it's bad enough for me to want to return mine if the fix doesn't work. The GPS on this phone is pretty bad as is. My TouchPro 2 was MUCH better. Both for lock times and keeping the signal.
Driving around in 3 major cities on clear sky days, my Vibrant loses it's GPS signal pretty much every time. Sometimes it resumes GPS after a few seconds, sometimes it takes a few minutes or never regains GPS lock. It's inconsistent to say the least.
I'm using Copilot Live and Google Maps on both the TouchPro 2 and the Vibrant. The Vibrant fails with either software.
PS: This is my second Vibrant. The first one had the same issues. I've tried various GPS fixes, but most if not all cause Google Maps to completely lock on my phone. I have to reset the phone to get it working again.

the galaxy s line will definitely be getting 2.2 at some point. I highly doubt it will be next week though. give samsung a little time to drop the fascinate at least.
oh and t mobile reps know absolutely nothing that we don't, so don't take their word on things like this before they're confirmed. they just want you to buy phones/keep your phone.

given that the galaxy s line is sold worldwide. i hope that samsung wouldn't mess this one up. it makes me wonder cuz thinking of "Samsung Rolled out 2.2 update really fast" will make them look a LOT better after the "behold" epic fail. I expect the update but i have until the 16th to return since i live in california and i get 30days window, so i might just wait till the 15th (can't say that i don't give them any chance). if the update doesn't come, i'll return and i believe many more will do the same if they still can.. the G2 is coming out and it looks like it'll be pretty advance. Don't we all just love the phone that are Top of the line without us having to modify it...

I spoke to my local t-mobile store in nyc, she openly said by end of september.

So lets see..... if Samsung release the update and tmobile hold it for some reason and not OTA it yet. Would it really hurt their sales in the us? And if Samsung taking too long to release the update.. would it hurt their sales worldwide ? Anyway we're all just the user who hope one day we'll wake up, picked up our phone and see the update screen waiting for us to press yes. So lets hope that our manufacturer and carrier wouldn't turn us away by doing it "too late" .. and we shall see

There has been no official internal memo about the release of 2.2. The reps are just speculating and telling you what you want to hear so you don't return your phone.
Ever since Google announced 1.5 people have been calling or going into stores asking about updates. Frankly we get asked constantly and are tired of getting asked. We give a generic response like "in a few weeks" just so you will stop asking. Once we know you will know and it will be all over tech blogs.
And when there is a release date not everyone will get it at the same time. OTAs roll out in groups so you might not even get 2.2 till October if you wait for the OTA.

Dead on right there.. The only thing our internal memos have said is Samsung has committed to a September release date for the GPS Fix and rumoured September release date for froyo. All that means is they will start pushing a update in September. To comply with this then can start pushing it September 30th. If your waiting for a update to keep you from returning the phone then just return it now and get it after the update comes out.

Yeah the people at the Tmo store will tell you anything to keep you as a customer... At one of my previous retail jobs I was told to lie twice a day if possible, just to get me in the mode if I had to bc I didnt know something.. Its their job to sell you something, if it happens to be a lie, so be it...

T-Mobile announces the same updates to employees as they do to the public.
Sometimes the public finds out about the updates before the employees.
If T-Mobile hasn't announced it somewhere, the employee is making it up.

To a extent, it is true but if you're tech savvy that is incorrect. When a person gets a OTA, the person can get the link of where the OTA is located and post it up. When this is posted, anybody can MANUALLY push the update to their phone. It doesn't even require root, I'd assume it would be to rename to update.zip and boot into recovery and press reinstall packages (Non-Clockwork).
This is how it was during 1.5 -> 1.6 for the G1 and other phones.

Use social media to stick it to sprint and samsung

Pissed off about the 2.2 delays? Yeah me too.

Anyways, I toyally agree with you except, I just got off of the phone with samsung and according to the lady 2.2.1 was already released to sprint on the 17th of december. So if she is correct, it would be way more effective to call sprint instead because they are the ones with the ball in their court now (IMO). Yeah, samsung took long, but I think we must now pressure the carriers bcause it WAS already released to them (idk about AT&T) and that's maybe why the galaxy s phones were listed as 2.2 on Sammy's website. The sounded like she thought we had it by now, but maybe she's just... DUMB? Again I may be totally wrong about all of this sooo.... that's just my current thoughts on the update drama.
*edit: but hey, I guess it wouldn't hurt to talk to samsung while you're at it xD

The strategy here is not to directly go to one or the other but to both in hopes that one will pressure the other to make a statement or take direct responsibility.
Although I am glad that this is the case and we now have an official statement from Samsung.

Added to my harrass list. Will note however that I doubt this will bring about anything. They could care less how we the minority of users savvy enough to know the difference feel. They've sold near 10 million SGS phones.

Personally I think they should have froyo out a long time ago, HOWEVER if it's unstable, why release it? DK28 is close to stable but not for prime time. I'm running it and need to restart the phone about once or twice a day.
I suspect it was a management decision to not release it because if there are big issues and they release it around xmas time, who is going to be around to fix it or support all the end users complaining? Most of the people take vacations around mid December until January for holidays... Most likely they have short staff.
I think we'll see something in January when they have developers ironing out the last bugs and have a full support team. Maybe for CES??
On another note, I think they "leaked" 2.2.1 out for a reason.. let's beta test on the hard core folks... Lots of people complained about GPS and some other issues, so best to fix it first from their perspective. These leaks happen to go to typically more advanced users that can figure out how to revert back to stock without needing to call support...

Is there a such app that would do the same as an app called sms bomber but it would do emails or tweets lol then you could blow them up literally.....sprint

Was reading around the pages and you guys are doing it wrong...
If your posting on a Sprint page, blame sprint, no matter what others say blame sprint and give evidence that its sprint..(if people blame samsung prove that is sprints fault)
(for those wondering international sgs did get froyo updates..it is official..not a rumor...the ones in canada were taken down but they were reinstated a week later and everything works)
If your on Samsung's page blame samsung and if people blame carriers prove that its samsungs fault...
This may sound contradicting but if your posting about how samsung sucks on a Sprint site..sprint does not need to defend samsung..they can let them take the blame..
same way the other way..

It would be nice for a carrier or manufacturer to give an official response instead of pushing the responsibility off to the retailers or customer service reps at the bottom.

Been doing tweets to @samsungservice, @samsungmobileus, @galaxyssupport and @sprint every couple hours now. Added @samsungtweets as well. Been doing facebook ones too but not gotten any official responses.

That makes sense. No one is going to be around on their digial marketing team this time of the year. Hopefully when they return next week they'll respond.
Keep the chatter going though. The more attention the problem gets the more likely a response will be given.
