Barcode scanning app that can output to text and send via BT - Desire Themes and Apps

Hey all, I have been playing around with some of the barcode scanning apps on my desire and have had an idea that would be handy for me at work.
I deal with a bunch of 3g cards and other items, most of the time I forget to record the details so it would be easier to just scan the barcode and have it sent to my pc through bluetooth.
So far none of the apps really suit that so I was thinking of having a go at making this myself. I have 0 skill in programming so I was just wondering if anyone here that has developed any apps could give me an idea of how easy or difficult doing this may be?
This is pretty much the chain of events I would like:
Scan Barcode
Popup window with text input field to enter what it is Eg, "TheAvatar's 3G card"
Put entered text and scanned barcode in to a text file with the entered text as filename
Send text file to PC through Bluetooth file transfer
I know most of the barcode scanners out there are based on an open library that is easily obtainable, just have no idea what to do with it after

Control your car by XDA

Problem:
there is a GSM Module in my car. It has three functions:
1) Send alarm warnings (when someone is trying to steal the car or CD player) to my phone (XDA2) as a SMS.
2) Retermine car's location, when it is stolen
3) Remote control of Webasto heater (when standard radio remote control can't reach the car - max. distance is 800m)
Each of these function has a small problem:
ad1) XDA just once silently beeps when SMS is received. It is fine for regular messages, but not for that message saying "Someone si trying to steal your car!". So I need a different sound for received messages, depending on sender - the sound for SMS sent by my car must be louder and longer, than SMS sent by my wife! How to do that?
ad2) I'm using T-Mobile Locator service for that. I don't know if TMO offers it in all countries, but here, if you know LocatorPIN of some mobile phone, you'll immediately receive a SMS containing location of that phone. I also have a great navigation software and maps (2CDs) from TMO - so when your phone is connected to the PC, you can track location of your car (or even of your wife). But without the PC, you'll only receive a text message with approximate location (calculated from one BTS). On PC you'll get more precise position calculated from more BTSes. So I need to use my XDA as the PC - I want to see accurate position on the map. But I'm not sure if some PocketPC navigation map software (such as TomTom) is able to read the coordinates automatically from SMS in inbox. On PC you can use any GPS software with "T-Mobile Locator", because TMO provides a driver, which simulates GPS, but in fact it sends SMS location requests, reads the SMS responses and sends coordinates from them to the navigation software.
ad3) To start or stop or control other heaters functions, you need to send a SMS to your car in special format (syntax). There must be a 7-digits password for the car's GSM gate and SMS also must contain commands for the heater in proper syntax. So I'd love some application simillar to those applications for infrared remote controls - the fullscreen panel with buttons such as "Start heating", "Stop heating", "Turn winter mode on", "Turn summer mode on", "Auto switch-off after XXX minutes", etc... (all commands accepted by heater and/or climatronic). I'd define SMSes in proper format under these buttons (just once) and then I would be just pressing these buttons and XDA will automatically send the SMS. Is there such a piece of software (remote control software sending SMS mesages instead of infrared beams)?
In a worst case I would create that software by myslef. I just received a DVD with latest VisualStudio.NET from M$, I also have the devkit for WM2003. But I don't know, how to send SMS, how to read it from inbox, atc...
1 you need a 3th party program written by yourself or somebody else which pass all your emails looking for a code or frace which makes the xda react diffrently then when it gets other sms's
so you got alot of work ahead if you are doing it yourself or you may have to pay somebody money to make it or if you are really lucky there already is a program free or otherwise which you can use
2 i would look in the gsm api for any function you may also need to keep a list of locations to match what the gsm provider give you with something you can use for anything
not to mention using that list to make some map program know where you are at
3
well here all you have to do is make a today plugin which auto send predefines sms msg when you press them
i would think that all these wishes would require some programming some of them some serious programming
of cause i could be wrong and there already is a super tool which does all these things and make toast
good luck
I can't believe there's no such app!
Have you tried doing a search ?
I am pretty sure that exactly the same question came up a little while back.
Rgds,
Rob.
What is the GSM Module? Also does it have a GPS module as well and can you connect it to the XDA II to give a GPS feed for Sat Nav purposes?
I am after a device similar to the one you've described but I want it to also feed GPS data.

Call History

Does anyone know if it's possible to look at the call history file so that it could be printed out from the host PC ?
Would be useful when filling out expenses claims to list all calls which were business related.
Thanks
Call history
Im looking for the same thing. A way to printout the call history, does anyone know a way or prehaps the Call history file name?
The file name is clog.db in the databases folder. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that the databases on the XDA can be opened.
here are some options as to which programs on pc may be able to open the file with the db extention
http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=db&goButton=Go
Thnx al lot crippsa and Rudegar, found the clog.db file and am able to open it with DBView.
Hi boeloe44,
I'm interested to know how you accessed the clog.db file with DBView. Is this the ARANAY DBView program ? (DBView V2) or another PPC application of the same name ?
I've tried the Aranay DBView which runs on the host PC and cannot seem to get it to connect to my XDA to read the DB files.
Any assistance you may be able to give would be appreciated.
Thanks
Alan
why not just copy the file to the pc that should make access a bit easier

Actualy dbview didn't help as i thought it would. I could only view the clog file with it and nothing else.
I found another program and this one did help me, its dbexlporer.
http://www.phatware.com/hpcdbex.html
Here you can download a trail version
With dbexplorer you can export a database to a comma separated file. This file is accessable and you can copy the file from your ppc to a desktop pc and open it with Microsoft Excel.
This is my way for printing out the call history, hoop it helps you crippsa.
To Rudegar: I was unable to find a way to copy the database to my desktop pc. I think the databases are lock or something.
I use Phone Dashboard for this purpose. It also tracks usage overall with some powerful filters such as free mobile-to-mobile plans, night/weekend, etc.
Thanks boeloe44 - DBExplorer is just the job, exports all the fields including the contact name - just what I'm looking for.
Phone Dashboard is good, but you still cant print the call log on the host PC and also it does not show the contact name. It only shows date, time, number and length. Unless of course the trial edition I'm using has less features that the full copy.
I've noticed that the clog.db only holds 50 entries, does anybody know if this can be expanded ?
Thanks,
Alan
The clog.db file certainly will hold thousands of entries. You can change the deletion settings by going to the phone, then call history, click on the tools menu, call timers...
Thanks Carlos - I've since found that Phone Dashboard can export the log file but it still doesn't contain the contact name, which is a pity as having it saves time by not having to look up the number to see if it was a personal or business call.
Thanks for advising how to adjust the deletion time on the clog database.
Alan
I've passed a comment to Hudson Mobile Technolgies (makers of Phone Dashboard) to include the name field in future releases of Dashboard
That would be a good idea. Another idea I sent him was to include the contact's CATEGORY. Then I'd have "client" in the field and would know to bill it. Right now I simply sort in Excel and search on the known billable numbers. Not as accurate or quick.
Overall though, that product is a very nice one to have on my phone. It has saved me money when I've been close to going over my plan. I don't know how it is in Europe, but US carriers screw you on overage (35-40 cents per minute).

Screen scraping?

I want to do the same as the person who started this thread, which may require developing a number of things. I've programmed in Java and Perl before but have no experience of writing software for mobile devices.
The information required is on a web page, so I need a program to retrieve the page text, parse it for the relevent data, and store that data somewhere (e.g. a file or registry key). It needs to do this either on a schedule, or after every call. There are actually two pages used by the provider, one is accessed by regular http and the other by https, so support for retrieving secure pages would be a bonus. After this, I need to display that data on the Today screen, so I'll need a Today plugin that displays text from a file or registry entry.
Obviously I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so need to know if any of these already exist:
- A screen scraping program/tool/library for PocketPCs. I know SPB weather does this, but I'm guessing they don't give away their code!
- A way to schedule programs, without them having to run all the time in memory.
- A Today screen plugin to display text from a file and/or registry entry.
Thanks!

ixMAT, easily move a webpage/sms/phone# from your PC to G1!

Just a little app I've been using that seems worthy to note...This will help you move webpages/messages/phone#s from the large screen/full keyboard of your PC to you g1 for processing in just a few seconds (no typing required for webpages just c/p!
Website from pc - phone:
First you'll need ixMAT Scanner from the market..
Browser to your favorite uber long web address on your pc.
Copy the website's address
Open this page http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ be sure you have 'content type' set to 'URL'
In the are labeled 'URL:' paste the uber long web address then press 'generate'
Open ixMAT Scanner, and focus it on the QR Code image that was produced
if all goes well you should now have a link in ixMAT that your can open in the g1's browser..
Phone # from pc -> phone:
Also you can use the same website and ixMAT to add phone numbers to your contacts.
Choose "phone number" under content and follow the same procedure as before.
BEWARE tho, trying to use the 'dial number' feature in ixMAT always causes a force close on my phone.
SMS from pc -> phone:
Another cool feature of the combo is the ability to write an SMS on the your pc.
Choose 'SMS' under content, then fill in the appropriate info # + msg then hit generate.
Scan with ixMAT and after a few seconds your should get 'send sms' 'send mms' options.
Click ''send sms' (or 'send mms' if you want to attach pics etc.) and the info is set up ready for you to hit send or w/e in your messenger
hope this is helpful, it's easier the 2nd time..lol
wow, that actually works a hell of alot better than i thought it would.
quicker than typing out the url thats for sure!
cheers for this
lol cool avatar, you stole 2 seconds of my life!
glad ya like it the email and sms features are useful as well
you can also copy+paste this into the title bar of your browser and have it auto-generate the image for you
Code:
javascript:void(window.location="http://qrcode.kaywa.com/img.php?s=8&d="+window.location)
ahh, cool. I also found this firefox add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8613 that installs to the status bar, just click and it creates a code for the page your viewing. downside is it seems to redirect you through another site first..
The other signed QR generator 'Mobile something' add-on doens't seem to work for me atm :/
If i put a telephone number and then i scan it with G1 there a way to add the number on the contact list?. i can only open thw webbrowser.

Ya, you have to change the 'content type' to "phone number" on the QR Code generator site. what i get from a phone number such as ########## is 'dial number', or 'add contact'
no this is not true it doesn't work for me
Works great. Thanks for the good idea.
this rocks!! by the way, right back atcha as far as your avatar is concerned
mastercut, ok.. seems there's some issues with the updated ixMAT it no longer dials numbers (force closes), it's still works good for adding to contacts tho... oh well, bummer lol

Setting different ringtone on people.

How is this possible on the tab ? I am trying to find out myself for quite some time now and i cant seem to find it.
I am on JM6
Go to file manager open any mp3 file via the default music player, click the menu key, it gives two options share and set as, when you go to set as it gives option to set as video call, voice call, specific user, etc etc.

On mine that doesn't work, as the contact list showing after chosing "set as" is totally empty, thus search don't give any results (despite my samsung app contact list have 200+ entries sync with google contacts).
Is there a way to access the default contact list to ad phone numbers to show there? I wonder why the default contact list and the samsung app one aren't linked...
Just open it fromhe the music player it self dont run the music just from the music library long press then set as or download ring extender from the market
Nope. There is a bug on the tab about this. All my contacts were synchronized/imported from google contacts and facebook. They appear on the contact list. But none of them show on the last selection operation trying to assign a ringtone/mp3 to, search function does not help, empty list.
I added a test contact manually on the phone. This one shows up.
Contacts are not imported each time i boot the GT, but they are not stored on the phone list.
Am i missing something? Any way copying all contacts to phone?
I may try the app you mentioned to see if it works.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
App didnt work.
Found that on the contact list you can modify a contact entered manually and set a ringtone direcly there.
But on sync contacts (all of mine...) when i tap "modify" i get a "impossible to modify
SNS contacts on this phone"
annoying as i use a bt headset and different ringtones would have helped me to guess whos calling before picking up without taking the phone out.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Can't even add ppl to groups...
Course, the preferred way this /should/ work is you set the mp3 YOU want as your theme tune, then when you call people, they hear your theme tune playing.
One of the voip apps should enable this! (with an option to turn it off of course when it's abused!).
solved
OK, just to let you know that after several attempts I finally found two solutions on my own.
First one consists in a light app, meant to "cut" quite precisely mp3 wavefiles located on your device to produce rigngtones: its name is "Ringdroid" from Ringdroifd team. The second one is the well known "Zedge", a pick & share ringtones app. Both allow setting a ringtone to every contact, even if it's a synchronized one thus not showing in the default phone adress book when trying to assign through basic music apps.
I tried and it worked.
These two apps are the only ones I fond working in purpose at the moment.
Shame this wasn't on stock feature.
Enjoy your tab
