The reason that I chose the X10 is because of the slightly larger screen with slightly higher resolution at 16:9 instead of 15:9 and the pure awesomeness of it's camera! Oh yeah, I think the X10 looks WAY better than the Desire. But that's up to you.
X10 or Desire
Me and dbase-uk are currently comparing these 2 phones as we upgraded the same time, I have the x10 and he has the desire, both on orange.
The main differences we have found at the mo are that the Desire is more polished because of the the android 2.1, but in having said that the X10 does run the same kernel 2.6.29-rel (x10 android 1.6). This enables the X10 to do more of the android 2.1 apps but not all such as live wallpapers.
Simple tasks so far that have got my back with X10 are things like sending a business card via text only seems to be the option to send it via bluetooth very frustrating !! Also things like a you tube link straight from the you tube player in sms, no option have to login in to you tube!! These are all present on the desire straight out the box.
Benchmarks ( linpack )
X10 4 mflops
desire 7 mflops
Stock
The camera is better on the X10 face detection and 8.1 camera and other settings. Dark shooting on the x10 is not as good but there is a new sony build coming out r1fa016 x10 currently on 014, this is meant to fix camera dark settings, overall performance and sound quality.
Timescape is cool and does work well (under review at the mo)
Also the screen on the Deisre ome led and x10 is not but really cannot tell the difference, apart from the black is a little darker on the deisre, I do like the x10 screen it is bigger and looks stunning.
Big shock was the size comparison they are pretty much identical, but to look at them the htc looks a lot smaller because of the rounded corners and smaller screen weight wise cannot tell the difference.
Either way X10 and Desire both run Android wich is the way forward, after have windows mobile and symbian, no comparison!!
Thanks more soon
I went for the X10 in the end. Mostly because I'd been following it for such a long time and its supposed hardware spec (before launch) was on par with the desire.
Once the truth came out about the clearpad 1000 screen and Sony's track record for updates, I was really going to go for the desire as I considered it to be more "future proof".
I wasn't all that excited about the physical design on the desire but I had used sense before on my hero and new that the UI was sound.
However I think that because I'd had a hero before, it was hard to excited about desire as it is virtually the same phone but on steroids.
I've compared them both and the desire is slick and the updated version of sense is brilliant, android 2.1 is brilliant and it may get 720p recording through a software update.
Personally though its still not as exciting as the x10. It got mine in white and it looks good. The screen great, the colours are not as vibrant as the desire as previously said, but once you turn up the brightness the screen improves dramatically (and the battery life decreases drastically!)
The Sony keyboard is absolutely awful as you must've heard by now, but that can be rectified by installing either better keyboard or the HTC one from the desire.
Browsing is a joy on the x10, as Google maps. Although I do sometimes.miss pinch to zoom. The alternatives do work quite well and makes using this phone one handed a breeze.
Although Sony's custom apps can run a little slowly at times as result of the data they collect. The rest of the phone seems quite snappy. I think that if android 2+ comes this phone will impress in a big way.
The other reason I didn't get the desire is because I heard about the evo which I do want. So the x10 is a welcomed change for now. Hopefully since I bought an exclusive white one it will fetch a pretty penny when I come to sell it on in the future.
hey all.. ive been checking out the desire forum as welll....it seems it has just got a slicker ui.... the 2.1 os isnt making a big difference (which i thought it would)
looking at the spec, i read some where it has 1g internal storage.. can someone confirm? apologies if it has been asked already.
on the desire internet explorer you can select and copy paste.... is this possible on the x10

I believe that the Desire only has 512MB internal storage while the X10 has 1GB.

Question for those of you migrating from Droids, or have handled one extensively:
1. How much difference does the double memory and processor make? I mean I know it's faster by alot... but Droid was already fast, Droid has a GPU, and I've read repeatedly that nothing really uses Snapdragons power potential yet. The iPhone uses a much slower chip in 3g and 3gs, and no one seems to complain there.
2. Compare the camera for me. I hated how slow the demo model at the store's camera was on the Droid, and all my old HTC phones. The N1 I had was decent. The Incredible has been fantastic for me as for as time it takes to capture and save a pic.
3. Compare the screens. Not technical wise, and dont get all in depth if you havent handled it. How is our screen noticably better or worse? For instance I hate all OLED's complete failure in sunlight, but do like how colorful it is. And touch is noticably better on Incredible than N1, and droid seemed to have lower tech touchpad.
4. Very important: please compare how loud the speakerphone is and if voice quality on ear phone is different. I don't like HTC's speakerphones, on WM or Android, although the Incredible seems a little better than before. I've heard that the MotoDroid's is very loud and clear.

IMHO it's actually very good in direct sunlight. I was very surprised because of blanket statements like yours.
It's hardly a complete failure and much better than the last gen of screens that HTC has put out (like TP2, etc...)
I went from a moto droid to a DI. Much snappier, don't miss the keyboard, cause I use the on screen so much anyway, and it works great.
I'm really wondering where you impressions come from if you have "ask" about them.
Making sure the auto-brightness is selected helps alot with viewing the screen in direct sunlight outside. Indoors with the same option checked was a little dim for my liking but I've adjusted to it.
Your partially correct, I think the Di screen is decent in sunlight. Supposedly same as n1 but my n1 was useless in the sun. Was wondering if it was just me.
I'm asking so I can find objective advice and not my one sided opinion. However the blanket statement should have been worded differently. Oled sun glare is a real issue though, hence Samsung hyping super oled for performance in sunlight.
Thank you both for your opinions, keep them coming.

Opine? I'm just posting my experience in sunlight
Any doubt, ask to take one outside from the store and see for yourself (if they let you!). Your definition of N1 uselessness is just your opine, too!
Have a droid overclocked to 1200mhz, and now the incredible.
Incredible is as good or better in all respects except one. The moto droid records video at a higher bit rate and it is noticeably smoother imho. BUT, the incredible records at a higher resolution.
Concerning the screen, I find no discernable difference in direct light. However, the incredible has a MUCH greater viewing angle and more vibrant colors.
shot to shot camera speeds are much better on the incredible.
I do find the incredible screen to be more responsive, and more importantly I find it more accurate.
I think one aspect of screen sizes that always gets overlooked is the aspect ratio. They are both 3.7 inch screens, but the incredible is slightly wider and shorter. When viewing videos in the common 4:3 aspect ratio, they are larger on the incredible screen. It also makes for a slightly wider keyboard in portrait mode. Both if these are advantages for me.

I had an opportunity to play with the incredible at a verizon store. First thing that I noticed was the AMOLED screen isn't as good as I thought it would be. People here mention that the droid's screen is much sharper but it's not because of the extra 54 pixels(TP2 has the same screen size and the same resolution yet it looks a lot sharper). The incredible has some kind of a fine mesh....it's like looking at the screen through that mesh. One might think that it's an AMOLED thing but I disagree. Although some AMOLED screens have that mesh, my Samsung i8910 didn't have it. Screen resolution was considerably lower but the actual picture looked a lot sharper...and colors were better too. Don't know...it was disappointing. I hope Super AMOLED screens don't have that ugly mesh.

the Incredible can be faster for daily use and built in features but I feel this is due to rom optimization. The reason I say that is as soon as you step away from the basics and say play a game the droid eats it up and when you use vanilla Google functions they are the same.
the camera is hands down better on the Incredible. So much in fact it is the key reason my over all opinion is that the Incredible is a better phone. The camera on the droid is so grainy I dont take pics with it. I was always disgusted by them.
As for the screens, I know there isn't a huge difference in screen size but the over all shape of the Incredible is a lot more comfortable for web viewing in my opinion. That being said, every color besides black looks better on the droid, at least to me it does. As for touch sensitivity, they are vary close and they are both finger print magnets. I was however vary disappointed to learn the Incredible screen is run of the mil glass, not gorilla glass and it doesn't have the anti finger print coating.
I have had many HTC phones and the ear piece and load speaker have always been sub par to me but the incredible is definitely better than any other HTC phone I have ever used. The ear piece is prob louder and clearer than the droid and the loud speaker is good enough but not as loud as the droid. One of my favorite things about the Droid is its beefy loud speaker.
You didn't ask but I ran the browsers against each other and even with moderate flash on the page, the incredible and the droid were about the same speed, one would be a little faster than the other and vise verse.
again you didn't ask but at least with Petes rom, the droid outlasts the incredible by a respectable about when it comes to battery life.
Hope this helps
The droid has better battery life, even overclocked 200 percent?
Also, the whole faster in basic functions thing... I would expect the Droid to do well at games, since it has a similar GPU to the IPhone, and the Incredible uses Snapdragon, which as far as I can tell just uses it's raw horsepower to process graphics.
The reason I asked these questions is because only the specs of the N1 drew me to Android, but I really missed my keyboard. And when moving to Verizon, I considered getting the Droid even though it has bottom level specs [comparatively] because of the keyboard and loud speaker. The Droid has impressive construction and quality.
All that said, I really like the Incredible. I broke two nexus ones and haaaated not having a store to go and say REPLACE MY PHONE. And the other little problems are all fixed on Incredible. I'm doing some constructive thinking haha.
Really, better droid battery life on that setting? I'm skeptical
Once you use the on-screen keyboard and get used to it, you won't go back.
I used to be a physical keyboard freak. Now that something is better than iphone/tp2, etc.... I'm having a great time with a lighter weight device and fast "tapping"
Cheers all..
1. How much difference does the double memory and processor make?
A. After owning the Droid, the Incredible just feels snappier in mostly everything it does. I haven't tried many 'graphic intensive' games on either device, so I cant comment on the Droid's dedicated GPU. The "Leap" feature in Sense runs very smooth, regardless of how many widgets are loaded on the 7 home screens. While its very easy to overclock the Droid, it still seemed 'sleepy' every now and then. Things would fly, and then for no reason, slow to a sludge, then back to normal. I have found this combo of Sense + Snapdragon to run great, even after throwing all my contacts, media, and apps back on.
2. Compare the camera for me.
A. As far as the camera is concerned, this advantage goes to the Incredible. The one thing I miss from the Droid is a dedicated camera button. Using the optical joystick on the Incredible (and I mean the physical pressing of the button) can sometimes generate unwanted blur. That said, the Incredible camera offers more features, the touch to focus is nice, and the shutter speed seems much quicker. I could upload some shots from both phones if anyone would like. Quite frankly the Droid camera interface just feels old. From what I read, the Droid records better video. I suspect as time goes on someone will hack the Incredible camera to do so as well.
3. Compare the screens.
A. I had not owned an OLED screen prior to switching from the Droid to the Incredible. I wouldn't call OLED a complete failure in sunlight, but I wouldn't call it a success either. With both phones set at Max Brightness, the Droid is slightly more readable outside on a sunny day. The Incredible screen is much more vibrant, but in some cases almost too vibrant. It seems to really push the red/orange colors. In a similarly lit room, with both phones set at Max Brightness, the OLED screen on the Incredible really shines. After testing a friends N1, I can say the responsiveness of the Incredible is greatly improved and more accurate. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Incredible has a newer digitizer.
4. Very important: please compare how loud the speakerphone is and if voice quality on ear phone is different.
A. This was a huge looming question mark for me. I loved using the Droid's speakerphone for listening to music, long winded phone conversations, and annoying coworkers. I still think the Droid has the best speakerphone on the market (for now), so props to Motorola there. Look at the back of the Incredible and you see a small, underwhelming speaker hole. However the speaker on the Incredible is pleasantly surprising. While it's not as loud as the Droid, it's equally clear, and in my opinion, provides a fuller sound. Voice quality is pretty much the same on both devices, but the Incredible earpiece could be a bit louder.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the Incredible so far. I'm definitely a tinkerer (hence, here I am at xda) and try to monitor ongoing processes and such, but I haven't cared to with the Incredible. Why? I loaded it up with widgets, tunes, pictures, videos, apps.. and it's still smooth sailing

My droid has better battery life apples to apples but there is now a trick to "really" fully charge the Incredible that I am trying and it seems to be a night and day difference. I will get back to you when I have a few days to compare

You won't be disappointed with the Moto Droid. The Incredible is a beast, and slightly more refined UI. Didn't play with the speakerphone yet, but the interface is smoooth. That said, developers seem to have outpaced OEM's with low voltage kernels. I get pretty good battery life out of Bugless Beast V1 with the P3 1.2ghz Kernel. Played with the phone on and off all day yesterday, forgot to charge it overnight, and woke up to 30% battery remaining. Never turn off wifi orGPS, brightness maxed.
Biggest difference to me is that the Moto Droid feels much more solid. For all it's features, everything about the Incredible feels like a toy. Especially the screen. The best feature I have found for the incredible, beyond even the superior camera, is that there is already a extended battery that will fit without an alternative backplate. The 2800 ma/h for the Droid is so hideous I'll suffer the stock battery.
I read that you wanted in-store service, but if you're willing to do without it, you can grab a Moto Droid from Amazon for $30. It's a LOT of phone for that price. You can't find a 16 gig memory card for $30. Droid comes with one tho.
The keyboard is less refined than my old Kaiser was, let alone the TP2. But you get used to it pretty quick. Especially with Swype for basic messaging duties. Only really break out the slider for passwords anymore. And running commands in Terminal Emulator.
You won't be disappointed with either. I have a droid overclocked to 1ghz works great, the keyboard for me was a joke, my gf uses it now and loves it. The DI is overall snappier and more responsive and if the droid is left with several apps open for a long period of time it can lag a bit, where I have not noticed any change on the Incredible. But still nothing as bad as WM. If you are about having big balls go big and get the Incredible though I am in the same situation as in the past 4 devices, waiting for Root (HSPL) with WM but this is the first device that isn't crippled by the stock rom. I really like sense ui for usability.
Ill have to agree with what has been said already, the phone is really fast and responsive, havent really run into any issues with it bogging down yet. I ran cyanogen on my droid previously OCd to 1.0ghz, and while that was fast, it still occasionally bogged down a bit.
I do have a few annoyances with the incredible, Mainly the root issue, never really followed the problems the Eris community is having, but apparently HTC just really doesnt want anyone to root their phones for some reason. Hoping to see some progress on that front sooner than later.
The autocorrect feature is basically unusable, at least for me. I understand having to train words and all that, but the correct is VERY aggressive, to the point of nonsense. I dont know who thought "haha" should be autocorrected to "usually", I dont see how that could be considered even remotely similar. It was ok in correcting words while I was still getting used to the touch keyboard, but I ended up turning it off. Maybe if it automatically learned words you use I could leave it on, but coupled with the aggressiveness, having to stop and tell it to learn 3-4 words per sentence is ridiculous.
The bottom buttons are a bit touchy in my experience. Whatever is different from the droid, I sometimes find myself having to tap the back button more than once to get it to register, but not often enough to really be a major problem, more of a minor annoyance. Plus, the flip side is there are less inadvertent back button presses, since they are a bit offset from the very bottom of the phone.
My only other thoughts are on the optical trackball, not really a complaint, just an observation. I often forget it exists, probably mostly coming from the droid where that functionality was unavailable unless you opened the phone to get to the D pad thing on the keyboard, so I mostly learned to operate the phone without relying on it. Neat feature, and definitely cool when I am playing around with it, just a matter of teaching myself to remember to use it, I suppose.
Overall, Im happy about the switch. I do miss root and all the goodies that come with that, but hopefully that will be fixed sometime fairly soon. The overall feel of the phone is vastly improved, however if you tend to wear shallow pockets you may want to invest in a holster, you might not even realize the phone fell out. If you are into the newest thing, the incredible is definitely that, for the moment.
Just a note: I am not deciding between the Droid and DI. I bought the Incredible the day it came out, because I wanted Verizon's network, and I had an N1.
I really wish there was a phone with a wide enough screen for typing, very very loud speakerphone, and a hardware keyboard. i type emails for my small business on the Di, and it's very doable but still slower than my TP2 was.
I too am frustrated with root, I almost require WiFi Tethering and the LED Flashlight.
I really almost got the Droid because of it's developed community and accessories, but the processor put me on the fence. On the one hand, the 3GS makes due with the same processor and no complaints from their camp, and all Droid review mention good performance... on the other hand how could TWICE the processing power be negligible? Would 550Mhz still cut it with Froyo and Flash and 4g Apps and all that? And so I went with the Incredible, and am very happy about how HTC fixed almost every single gripe I've had with HTC in general, and with the N1.
Hey guys, so i have a unique opportunity that ive been given, i could if i want trade in my incredible for a Droid X, because my friend has a 2 year upgrade available and he really wants an incredible, so he told me he was fine with buying a Droid X with the upgrade and then me and him just swap phones
I know that in general, the phones are very close performers, however im just looking at one specific thing here and that is the Camera that both utilize... HTCs is 8 megapixels and Motorolas is also 8 Megapixels... both are also capable of taking 720p videos so on paper they would seem to be idential, however we know thats not the case
Alot of users have reported that the HTC Incredible / Evo Camera while taking 720p video is rather mediocre and sub-par to what youd expect, and that it also suffers from a low FPS video capture using that resolution... So i was wondering if the Motorola solution is the same way or does that 8MP Camera that they utilize in the Droid X a superior one to that of the DINC?
Honestly, the camera and video performance has been a phenomenal experience on the incredible. Your dealing with a phone here and the differences between the two (if there are) will be quite slim. Sure if you put the two side by side, you may see a difference however it's not going to be replacing your point-and-shoot camera or DSLR.
If you're stuck deciding between the two I'd highly suggest you take a look at what's going to feel better for yourself whether it be the size/form factor or the software that your dealing with/ whether or not you want to be able to have the ability to switch roms.
If you absolutely don't care and the decision maker comes down to the camera, honestly, either one will be a fantastic choice -- I just suggest rethinking where you are on the fence about the phones.
Its not just a camera... however the Droid X's size does not bother me at all, ive been tinkering with them in the verizon stores for awile now and havent been dissapointed..
FYI i went into a Verizon store today and went to one of the Droid X's up on display and installed Quadrant Benchmark on it from the market and right off the display shelf it did a 1200 quadrant score... and thats running a 2.1 rom fully stock with no modification.... 1200s is what we incredible owners are hitting running FROYO and custom roms, that won me over... the Droid X is just a better performer

Thats the one downside that im fully aware of... coming from a rooted and rom'd incredible
Honestly, benchmarks don't mean ****. I've used both and I can tell you, without a doubt, the incredible is faster, smoother, and all around nicer to look at.
On paper the X seems like it should perform MUCH better than the Incredible (sorry... OMAP vs. Qualcomm ANYTHING... OMAP wins), but yeah in having an incredible and spending a decent amount of time with the X, the X seemed noticeably slower in a few things. For one, just swiping left and right between home screens, the Inc is butter smooth, the X animates far more choppy... even my wife noticed this, and she is not the kind of person who cares about that kind of stuff. Also, opening apps, often the Inc would open faster, usually by less than a second, but still. I also had a hard time getting a steady shot with the camera.
of course, the bigger screen is very nice, and dedicated camera button should be f'ing mandatory these days (HTC!!). For gaming, the X is going to stomp the Inc (though, they both bow down to the Galaxy S).
It's all personal preference, but having tried the X, I don't regret having the Inc.
Yeah the incredible is smoother. I ran bench mark on my incredible and it ranked higher than the x. So i guess bench mark can be inconsistent

You are either an HTC person or not.
I had both and had to dump the X because exchange support is loaded with bugs and notifications are broken.
HTC licenses active sync so exchange support is flawless.
I also found the white level control on the HTC to be far superior.
The Motorola is always shooting with a yellow cast to the pictures.
Low light the HTC has better color but the noise reduction is out of control.
I also think the HTC camera is faster.
Motorola has the edge on the gallery scrolling, its much faster. HTC is like slow motion compared.
HTC is more of a software company than Motorola and it shows.
You have to load at least 5 apps on the Motorola to get most of the functionality you do with Sense, including a launcher which completely defeats the point of Moto Blur.
Little things like icon notifications for gmail and exchange are built into sense.
You have to download a GMAIL notifier app for the Motorola and you dont have a way to get icon notifications on exchange at all on the Motorola.
Little nuances add up big time which is why despite the small size the Incredible is a better overall phone right now.
X had dedicated GPU.
I love the formfactor for the DINC, but if I had a choice to switch... I would just switch with his old crappy phone for now and give him the dINC, then wait for the verizon galaxy S to drop and upgrade to that.
Desire Z vs the Galaxy S I9000m from Bell which is the same as the international I9000 with a different modem.
CONS
Heavy - 180g vs SGS 120g
Thick - Feels almost double than the SGS
Smaller screen 3.7 vs 4.0.
LCD screen - AMOLED looks much better.
Small internal storage memory, OS + 8g included Sd card. 16G card needed for sure. Would rather have had the 8g internal, 16g + cards are pricey.
USB Port location on side. Difficult to hold when plugged in, awkward to type when plugged in.
Heavy
Google Picasa Sync requires a plug-in.
Very “Tinny” speaker vs the SGS. Takes a lot of eq to make it sound good.
Can't wake from touch button.
Heavy
No front camera
PROS
Battery Charge Light
Very Low Battery warning light – Red Flashing
Charging - Red
Charged Full – Green
Notification Light around touch button for phone and sms.
Notification LED under ear speaker (battery charge light) for notification in notification bar ie gmail, talk etc...
Keyboard with Backlighting
Metal Case
Dedicated Camera Button.
Camera flash.
Touch sensitive button.
Desire Z Software Pros
HTC Sense is very good. Much much much better than Touchwiz.
Way faster and responsive OS.
OS is more feature full ie, quiet ring on pickup, flip when ringing to go to speaker etc.
iPhone caliber GPS, works great.
iPhone 4 quality pictures, much better than the Galaxy S.
HTC Sense Hub with tons of skins, themes, wallpapers, widgets etc
HTC Sense Phone Finder and security services.
HTC Sync program, much better than Kies.
Power saver profile settings.
GALAXY S pros vs the Desire Z
Super light, can't feel it on your person at all.
Very thin.
Best mobile screen I have ever seen by a large margin.
USB Port placement on top is more manageable.
Front facing camera.
Wake via home button.
There is something about picking up an HTC device. Maybe it's the metal case, maybe it's the weight or the design. Not sure what it is but it feels like a professional instrument more than a toy.
Bottom line they are both very capable phones but the Desire Z easily wins because it just plain works. Samsung failed to make the GPS function, Samsung failed to make the OS quick and responsive. Samsung's Software engineering dept is weak. Above all, Samsung failed to make a phone that won't suffer from a critical failure. Thank goodness for the Dev community which makes the Galaxy S usable to our standards.
You might be thinking what about the Galaxy S GPU and processor? It's tough to state a comparison as the OS is so laggy, the Z appears to have a faster everything but that is just because the OS works very well.
I'm going to keep it as a backup and play with it from time to time but I will never buy another Samsung device again including the Nexus S. Prior to the Nexus One I was never a fan of HTC hardware either but I think they have come a long way.
Coming from a SGS to a DZ - I agree with you 100 percent!
Dont get me wrong - I loved my SGS (when it worked). Even with the slight lags and such I still liked it. Even with Touchwiz (leaps and bounds BEHIND Sense)...I still used it.
But after playing with the DZ; I have to admit - it (the DZ) is a much more capable device.
I too would never buy another samsung product (this will be hard as I liked samsung for a number of years; but their doggy response to the GPS, SD failures and customer inquiries have turned my off of them permanently.
I would get (planning on getting) a Desire HD over a Nexxus S any day of the week (as soon as its available in Canada)
The SGS super amohled screen will be missed ALOT; but what good is it if the device cant even boot!
Im confused are you talking about the Desire Z vs. Galaxy S devices or the DZ vs Nexus S?
i mean the Nexus S is running stock gingerbread and you guys are talking about touchwiz....
please make it clear because i cant tell what device your talking about.. no samsung device has touchwiz and a ffc.

regardless these phone are NOT the Nexus S. from what i gather ur comparing the g2 and the i9000/international.
Never once said either of them was the Nexus S as it clearly states Desire Z (not G2) and Galaxy S in my post. I did mention the NS but that was because it's a device made by Samsung. I will edit the post to read specifically the I9000m that is in my signature.
Interesting. I played with a friend's Galaxy S and thought it was a pretty decent phone.
I might suggest taking your Desire Z and flashing Cyanogenmod or even the stock G2 ROM and compare again.
Sense has some neat features but I find that it seriously slows down whatever phone it's on.
Based on how much the cooked roms improved the Galaxy S I can only imagine how much better the Z operates, just can't bring myself to play with it yet though. I got my heavily modded Galaxy S past warranty inspection don't wanna risk the Z right now. The Z must be lightning fast with a good rom and a OC'ed kernal, certainly is tempting.
I used Flippy's kernel for a while and ran some benchmarks while OC'd to 1.8Ghz! Got some pretty nifty scores. Close to 3000 on Quadrant and 60+ on Linpack.
When I upgraded CM, I didn't bother flashing another kernel. 1.5Ghz is plenty for me. The scores are still impressive and, more importantly, the phone runs great. Though, I never had problems with Flippy's kernel. Even at 1.8 the phone ran solidly even if the battery drained pretty fast.
Any impressions on how usable the Samsung S-AMOLED screen is outdoors? I really like my Desire Z but I need to use my phone on occasion outdoors or in my vehicle during daylight hours and I find it almost impossible to see my screen! Apparently that's a rare requirement but if the S-AMOLED helps significantly, I'd consider changing phones.
I never had an issue with it outdoors at all. It is by far the best screen I have ever seen in my life. Actually it's in front of me now, just finished playing some NFS. I usually kept the brightness at 38% except in direct sunlight when I would crank it. But that was only direct sunlight which you could fix by shifting your body. The brightness was good enough to where I set it at 38% full time and disabled the auto mode. Obviously the brighter the better it looks though. The screen is one of the reasons I can't let it go.
My last android phone was Galaxy S (Vibrant w\front facing camera) and I didn't like it. Felt too light and cheap, like it was a hollow toy. Good screen, thats about it. Ironically it has died with its new owner, the internal 16GB memory went.
Ya, the "In hand feel" just can't compete with any HTC phone out there right now. I like the hollow toy analogy. The Z or G2 feels like a substantial device or instrument if ya wanna go that far. Unfortunately with the Z the side effect is the hefty weight but one can't have everything for free. The lack of weight with the Galaxy sure was nice sometimes. Especially if your wearing loose fitting clothes or if you have to run with it. It's funny though, all the things I like about the Z would add weight to the Galaxy if it had those features (Led, Flash, Camera Button, Keyboard, Metal Case...) so again, nothing is for free.

I don't think "ironically" was the word you were looking for, maybe "predictably"?
I bought a Desire Z while my Galaxy S was gone for weeks having the internal SD replaced. The only thing the Galaxy S has on the Z is the screen, which doesn't make up for the lag, slow upgrade to Froyo, Kies, etc.
I was in the same boat. SD card in SGS was fried by 2.2 upgrade. Got into a Desire Z for the time being until its repaired - but have decided to stay with the Desire and sell the SGS when it comes back.
I do miss the super ahmoled screen - but the Desire has many other pros which I rather have.
I've been going back and forth on this same topic the past week.
Vibrant w/ 2.2 Nero V3, voodoo lagfix, 1000mhz vs G2 w/ CM 6.1 1516mhz
G2 gets 59 in Linpack = win
Vibrant gets 14
G2 gets 2600+ Quadrant = win
Vibrant gets 1500
Real world:
Open Market - tie
Pull up "My Apps" in Market - tie
Speedtest - Vibrant gets higher speeds over wifi and 3/4g (I'm in LA/OC area...the pic in my sig is from my Vibrant)
Google Maps - Open app to lock - tie
Google Maps Accuracy - G2 is slightly better and doesn't wander by 10 meters
The Sims (Market version on both phones) - Vibrant wins until the load screen with the loading bar. Once to that screen, the G2 pulls ahead for a win.
YouTube - Open app - Tie
YouTube - Play video - Vibrant wins
Screen: Vibrant wins when anything black is displayed. If you're not dealing with blacks, I actually really like the G2 screen. Vibrant wins outside. Vibrant gets win for size.
Feel: G2 wins
Mechanical Usability: G2 wins for flash, trackpad, led notifications.
The recent release of the Nero roms on the Vibrant are what spurned me to do this test. As of about 2 weeks ago I was 100% set on either selling the thing or seeing what what my new SOG multi tool could do to it. Now...not so sure.

Haha, same here. Got my Galaxy S back on Friday, a new one actually, they did not repair my old one. Keeping the Desire Z and selling the Galaxy S.

Yup comparing the vibrant at 1000mhz against the G2 @ 1.5GHz sure is a fair comparison. You should have left the G2 at stock, that's how the phone comes.
P.S. My vibrant with lagfix and froyo gets 2426 on quadrant... Just another example of how "fair" your comparison was.
All the speed testing in the world means nothing against the actual feel of the device. If it feels fast and feels responsive and all your apps/games work then the numbers mean nothing. My first flash of a custom rom on my SGS yielded the fastest scores I have ever had but that was a few months ago and was the slowest rom I had ever used in respect to "feel". The latest flash was close to stock numbers but felt and was sooooo much faster.
The one thing I can say for sure is, is that the Z is way quicker out of the box than the SGS.
We desperately need a new standard of testing. Right now a YT video is the most realistic evidence of speed.
Good morning,
I'm looking for a mobile-phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard; running the android operating system.
So far I've found the HTC Desire Z (Vodafone/3), Samsung Galaxy 551 (Telstra) and the Motorola Milestone 2.
Which should I get? – Alternatively, can you recommend a different one I can buy from a shop in the city tomorrow?
Thanks for all suggestions,
Alec Taylor
If you haven't already, try these phones out in person before you pick. In particular, the Milestone 2 (Droid 2 in the US) feels really cheap and plasticky, and with a clunky keyboard, compared to the Desire Z. I'm not too familiar with the keyboard variant of the Galaxy S (although on carrier in the US has it, but not mine). But while the Galaxy S phones have very nice displays, their housing seem cheaper and lower quality than the Desire Z.
Without any doubts, the Desire Z / G2.
Best hardware, screen, keyboard, and it's very unlockable, you can use whatever rom you like, and do everything with your phone.
I know all of the devices and have a G2, and love it.
Though, i put in my mind that i want a 2d cellphone....
Thanks, I'm taking a look at the specs now...
=Samsung Galaxy 551=
Processor: 600Mhz
Camera quality: 3MP
Weight: 156g
Dimensions: 111.0 x 55.0 x 16.3mm
=HTC Desire Z=
Processor: 800Mhz
Camera quality: 5MP
Weight: 180g
Dimensions: 119mm x 60.4mm x 14.16mm
=Motorola Milestone 2=
Processor: 1Ghz
Camera quality: 5MP
Weight: 169g
Dimensions: 19mm x 60.4mm x 14.16mm
But you're saying the Desire Z will last longer because it's better built?
I remember trying the keyboard in a shop once, wasn't too impressed... (compared with my TouchPro2)
The SOC in Desire Z has a newer technology or something like this, that even with a lower processor speed it's better.
Another thing, is that Motorola roms are buggy, and the Milestone 2 is trapped in Froyo, and the DZ has Ginger 2.3.4. The T-Mobile G2 has a cleaner rom than the DZ, which is the one i have, and used root to remove a few apps that i don't have use in my country.
And as Desire Z is a Htc, it has a much better community, and no locks, or so easy to beat. You can root easily, and put the rom you want because of almost "no locks".
I had a Touch Pro2 before this G2, and the performance is so much better, far better than the TP2, and the keyboard is better too.
If your a geek and want sim unlock, root, any custom rom u want, engineering hboot, etc. Than the g2/dz is your only choice. Plus its got gorilla glass

He right. I did quite a bit of research b4 buying an Android phone. I came from the Motorola Cliq and man was it a good phone but the OEM restrictions was killing me. HTC Devices are notoriously open/rootable. Dont let the 800 MHz fool ya. It clocks the same speed as the 1GHz single-core processors, just uses less power while doing it. Funny enough it was manufacture designed to run at 1GHz anyways, they just underclocked it in default roms for battery life. Most of us rooted run it at around 1.0 to 1.2 anyways.
Like others mentioned, I liked the Samsung Galaxy S keyboard variation (Sprints Epic 4g). Screen is VERY GOOD looking but its stuck in android 2.2 still. Plus it feels cheap outside that screen clarity. Like same plastic U would fine in the play phones of the Toy/Baby section in a store. Moto infamous for leaving devices without updates. While Samsung well known for intentionally holding updates behind to push there new product instead.
Most important is S-Off so easy wit this phone, its ridiculous.
Look at the Development page and ull notice all the Roms are cutting edge and completely stable for this phone. Most officially supported, lol.
CyanogenMod 7.1
Muiu
Pure AOSP
Sense 3.5
TMobile Rom, just optimized and Prerooted.
Cant really ask for more.
also, the Galaxy 551 has a tiny 240x400 screen, are you cool with that?
I would go for the Desire-Z over ANY phone
Thanks
Due to your advice and others (as well as the Milestone 2 not being available in any Optus store) I have gone with the HTC Desire Z from Vodafone.
Another reason I went with the HTC is that the software seems to be much much better than anything the Milestone 2 could've provided, as well as being easily ROMable.
If u cld live without a keyboard htc amaze is the best but i say dz

Desire Z will probably last longer, and it just feels better, with the aluminum and soft touch plastic body. Obviously much better build quality. If a phone feels cheap and crappy, its probably because it IS cheap and crappy. And that is how the Milestone2 feels.
Agree that the keyboard on the Desire Z is a bit of a step backward compared to the TP2, in terms of key spacing, key travel/action, and missing the top row of keys. But it still feels much better than the Milestone2. The Moto keyboards just feel cheap and inferior.

Every keyboard on every other cell phone since the TP2 is a step backward from the TP2!!
Don't pick Milestone, it's too big in hand and makes uncomfortable.
Samsung phone with a keyboard is not as good as HTC series, especially this Desire Z is one of the best in rare HTC phones with keyboard. And Desire looks super!
So my suggestion is to Desire Z
Thanks all, I had purchased the Desire Z on Saturday.
Glad to hear it still rates #1 :]
You can tell by my username what I think, lol.
HTC Vision(G2), meXdroidmod Ghost Chili AIO.
Congratulations!
You are gonna love this
the ONLY thing i wish my [email protected] had was a front facing camera. But I'll live. if you can live w/o it too then get the G2.
Milestone 2 : not very popular, hard to find parts and good roms.
Samsung : slow and low resolution.
G2: still a fast and good phone on the actual market. Overclock up to 2.0 ghz or 1.5 ghz stable.
What about GPU? Maybe take a look on wikipedia. If I remember, G2 has Adreno 205, witch is not that bad for the year.
