I'm trying to root a MyTouch 3G 1.2 by following the guide at theunlockr.com, and when I get to the step for flashing the Amon RA recovery I get the error "remote: image update error". I've tried using both amon ra's latest (v1.7.0G) and the clockwork recovery and get the same error for both. I'm pretty sure it's not the gold card as it finds SAPPIMG.zip and updates fine. I've tried various SAPPIMG.zip's and everything works up until the point of flashing recovery. I've tried booting the recovery with fastboot as well and it just shows a white screen with the three skateboarding androids and hangs.
Any help would be very much appreciated, as I was unsuccessful at returning the phone to it's previous unrooted state either. I really need to get this solved asap even if it means returning the phone back to it's previous state. The phone belongs to my mom and I told her I'd root it for her thinking it'd be a pretty simple process.
Just an FYI: I do have previous experience with rooting and flashing roms, recovery, etc as I have a G1 that's currently using Amon RA v1.7.0 recovery and running cyanogenmod 5.0.7.
You do have the recovery in your tools folder and are using fastboot flash recovery recovery.img to fastboot flash it correct? Just one hundred percent sure I couldn't tell you how many times people have gotten the fastboot command wrong.
SAPPIMG should be SAPPIMG.img, not SAPPIMG.zip. this in itself should be Amon's perfect SPL that is being changed to this .img and not using the .zip
unfortuanetly unlockr doesn't have good info for the 1.2

Opps I flashed the zip, though im running my phone rooted, its smooth except for a long boot up time...
It is supposed to be a ziip for our phones, ive only seen sappimgs with a .nbh or a .zip extension not single .img.

After putting a new kernel on my device running cm 6 RC1 and supposedly clockworkmod recovery latest, I now do not have a working phone as it stops at the mytouch screen and does not go further, only thing available to use is fastboot which to my dismay, I am having the perfect spl error (remote: not allow), any insight in this problem would be much appreciated.

Just reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery and flash a new rom and the old kernel
Clockwork recovery sometimes doesn't flash correctly through rom manager. Try downloading among RA's recovery and doing "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". You will need an engineering spl though.

Something went wrong. I don't know why all you new android nubs have to use "clockwork or "sp" recovery. A good ol Recovery image like Amon Ra's latest 1.7.0G works great. Anyway, you didn't brick the device. Just try re-flashing or flashing another rom. (one you know for a fact works) Oh, if you did a nandroid backup, I suggest you restore it. And if you can't get into "clockwork" recovery upon boot. Then I suggest you do what @caedus90 advised and flash Amon RA's recovery through ADB.
Hope this helps. And stop using those idiot friendly recovery alternatives. =P

OMG...I feel so dumb right now...I don't know why I didn't just stick with Amon's recovery...I got curious too and try to use Rom Manager to play around and now I am stuck as well...but my case is a little different in that I cannot get into recovery BUT my phone still boots right into Android like normal...
I flashed Amon's recovery via Rom Manager but still cannot get back into recovery...flashed ClockworkMod recovery but still no recovery...
So advice, please...I think I've learned my lesson and stay with the manual work from now on...lol...I was totally fine with Amon's recovery too...guess my curiosity will kill the cat eventually if I don't wise up...
What's the best way to get recovery back? I have Cyanogen's CM6 on my mt3g 32b...Much thanks for any advice...
UPDATE: Just thought I let you guys know that I was able to get Amon's recovery to work again by keep trying the reflash while in Rom Manager thanks to a tip from another member...Last time I'm touching Rom Manager...It's not a bad program, just us users who are causing problem...
I checked through 100s of post tonight and could not find the answer to this and am in need of some help. I attempted to install a Cyanogen Nightly tonight through Rom Manager with no prior knowlege of the issues with CW 2.5 vs. CW 3.0. Stupid I know.
So natuaraly, when the download finished and Rom Manager tried to install, my MT4G just hung at the white boot screen. Through previous posts, the directions were simple to reflash the previous CW Recovery through Fastboot and reflash the Rom.
Well thats where the problem is.... When I attempt to flash ANY Rom earlier than 3.0.0.5, it will say OKAY in CMD, however the phone will never boot into the Recovery. I even tried fastboot erase recovery then reinstalled and still nothing.
So i decided to go a different root and reinstalled 3.0.0.5 to see if there was any work around through there. After i install 3.0 through Fastboot, I am able to go into Recovery, however when I select ANY option no matter what, the hat and the gear icon stay in the background and nothing happens.
I am very confused and lost and am hoping someone here will have had the same issue and can help me get my phone back in order.
Thanks in advance guys!

I havent had that issue exactly, but I might be able to help wlk you through getting this fixed. Ive had problems more than once myself on recovery, and helped a couple others solve other issues on here. If you want, add me on google talk (same username as on xda), and Ill walk you through it. Might have to wait till the morning, though, as Im probably gonna head to bed soon.
Fastboot 2.5 recovery and reflash froyo rom. If you decide to install CM7 again - read, search and make sure that you understand what you're doing. It has been stated at least few dozen times that Rom Manager is useless with gingerbread until Koush updates it.
Same Issue??
I believe my issue sounds similar.
I tried to go from Iced Glacier up to CM7. When I did I attempted to use the Clockwork Recovery 2.5 and of course it didn't work. Then I tried to upgrade it to 3.0.0.5. Now when I try to reboot into Clockwork recovery the phone just stays on the MyTouch 4G splash screen. The only way to get around it is use the Power/Volume down button and click on FASTBOOT and then select REBOOT.
The phone then boots in Iced Glacier. I have redownloaded ROM Manager and attempted to FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. But it still won't load into recovery.
Essentially I need some step by step help to get back to clockworkmod recovery. I'm not too worried if I need to wipe everything. Just looking for the ability to restore again.
Alternatively I'm interested in upgrading to CM7 but not sure how I could do that without recovery working. I would also ask if you can give step by step instructions it would be much appreciated as I'm still pretty new to this.
Thanks!
I also have the similar problem. I have installed the Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 and have rooted my phone before i was trying to install the gingerbread version. I made a recovery backup. i tried to restore the phone with that backup image but it still hung up with that "t-mobile mytouch " white splash screen.
What should i do now ? i have no idea how to bring my phone back to life :/

Sounds like both of you should of never of done this. This has been discussed a few times, and the end result is always the same.....
Download the correct Recovery image (which can be found in the Development section) and install it to your phone by using the ADB commands, in the fastboot mode. you can find a quick and painless way to set those up in my signature. Once you have installed the recovery image you can boot into hBoot and select recovery. from there you can flash CM7 and the gapps. Once you have done all that download the official clockwork ROM manager from the market and flash his current recovery image.
HTC Magic

HBOOT-1-33.006
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261
I have problems getting in to the recovery mode (pwr button + home) it just gives me de red vodafone screen and hangs.
I am trying to install a custom rom.
- rooted the device with universal androot. it says my device is rooted succesfully.
- i also installed rom manager and installed the default clockwork recovery.
But i cant reboot into flash recovery.
I also tried another thread with a custem flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img. I followed it's instructions.
the instructions tells me on a terminal session or CMD prompt to install this custom ROM.
adb shell
su
(Now look at your device. If the superuser app is asking for permissions, then just push "allow" and make sure that the "remember" option is checked.)
cd /system/bin
ls
But i get no permission. I cant get root user when i type su.
so I must not have a rooted device or my permissions are incorrect on the sd-card.
Does anyone have an idea what i should do?
Did you reboot your phone after running Universal Androot?
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk
What happens if you switch off the phone and then press and hold home button while pressing the on/of button to switch on the phone.
If you are root and have installed the recovery properly, it should be shown within a few seconds after showing the red vodafon screen. From there you should be able to flash any custom rom. Meanwhile I flashed many recoveries and roms on both my tattoo and my magic 32b. Never had any problem execept those when forgetting to wipe.
And to be honest, I'm far away from beeing an expert!
I installed rom manager first and then universal androot.
also when i use adb from the android sdk i sometimes get the problem that i have no permission.
Could it be that the phone is'nt correctly rooted?
I tried all kinds of tools either on pc or mac. nithing really works
what would be the best way to root the HTC Magic correctly and what recovery image should i use. Also wich order.
I'm quite the noob when it comes to installing custom roms
Try "SuperOneClickv1.6.3-ShortFuse.zip" (available at xda).
This was very easy to use and worked like a charm.
I used it twice on my magic 32b, no problem!
I tried that also.
the rooting works. I tried an app to check if i have root access and it says I have root acces.
but when I use adb commands and su to root it will say no permission.
i think this is why installing the recovery in clockwork fails.
any suggestions?
I'll repeat myself. Have you rebooted the phone after running the root programs? Either one?
yes. I rebooted after each try but still I can't get into recovery mode. it just hangs.
also when i try to install a recovery image file i still get the no permissions errors.
the only recovery mode install that worked was the recovery from clockwork in ROM manager.
If ADB is working, goto shell (adb shell).
What do you see in prompt,
is it '$' or '#'?
If it's '$' try "su".
What is the output of "id"?
If you're root you should see something like "uid=0(root) gid=0(root)"
I See a $ and my id is shell instead of root.
if I type su it will give me a no permission error.
however I did download a terminal tool for android
from there I can su and it will make me root.
is there anyway i can use the terminal to install a recovery image so that if i boot my phone with home+power I will get into the recovery?
Try something like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4056530&postcount=6
Replace the recovery image in the post by for example recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img.
I did it almost the same way.
I was also having a recovery problem (Tmobile) after trying to flash_image RA-1.7.0G into recovery in rooted 2.2.1 OTA (obviously not the way to go). I downloaded the Clockwork Rom Manager from the Market and it was able to flash both Clockwork or Amon RA recovery with no problem and then reboot it into recovery.

When you reboot and go into recovery, does it load amon_RA or clockworkmod?
I had problems with that from the 2.2.1 OTA.
I was rooted for a long time, and then had to try the t-mo 2.2.1 so I unrooted and ran that for a while after their ota update. It was sluggish and I didn't much like it so I thought I would try using z4root and superoneclick to root it and put setcpu and overclock it a bit to see if it improved. Z4root didn 't work and superoneclick appeared to work. If you went into terminal it would give you # and seem to be rooted. I could install and run set cpu and it would work. However no matter what recovery I tried to install, it would disappear and return to stock recovery upon reboot with the 2.2.1 OTA.
You could get rom manager to load, or seemingly so , clockworkmod recovery. You could also have rom manager load into clockworkmod from within rom manager. Buit as soon as you reboot, it goes back to the default stock recovery.
I eventually gave up with that and decided to reroot old school and rooted it manuallyl. I went back to the sappimg.nbh file, installing the old cyanogen 1.4 recovery, the 1.33.2005 SPL. I then put clockwork mod 2.5.0.7 recovery on and then the t-mo 2.22.23.02. I was running cm6.1 for a while and now Yoshi's ginger rom.
And so, after this wandering tale, lol, I am wondering if you had more success that I did with the 2.2.1 and getting a recovery to load.

You could have just got booted into recovery once, flashed the engineering SPL only (there's a ZIP you can flash from recovery to do this), which would only change the SPL, from recovery, then erase/reflash the recovery from fastboot, and finally change the SPL back.

Thanks; that is very useful , and I didn't even think of that at the time. I think I was so frustrated that the recovery would not stay I just had a "I will make it work moment" and I knew what I was doing would work.
But thanks, I will definitely remember that if I have to do that again

Royal Ginger is a 2.2 ROM, if you are using Clockwork mod 3.0.0.5, there lays your problem. I have thread that is sticked to the top of the Q&A section that should be able to help you out. It's also the green link in my signature.
the reason the the PD15IMG didn't work is you need to download the PD15IMG image, it's not a ROM it's the actual file that HTC flashed to your phone to make it come alive, and flash it via the hBoot screen. IT will do it automatically. But i don't think you need to do that to resolve your issue.
i thought royal ginger was a gingerbread rom cause it said 2.3.3 on my about phone menu , not sure. but ill check out your thread and see if it can free my phone

I'm sorry u are correct. RoyalGlaicer is the 2.2 variant.
since that is the case are you getting any errors in the recovery image about not being able to mount anything?

the PD15IMG needs to be left named PD15IMG, and you flash if via the HBoot image. You do not need to use the recovery image to flash it. Just store it on the root of the SDcard and boot into bootloader. make sure to check the MD5SUM of the download to verify it's a good download. you can find hundreds of ways to do that via Google.
sir is there a instant messaging medium i can reach you on and when i dowloading it it was a zip ill see how to check the md5sum now but should i leave as pd15img.img and go to hboot again?

So your saying you can get into recovery, but not hboot? Lol on the MT4G you have to go through hboot to get to recovery. Also, your trying to use stock recovery? If so (you need adb) download the cwm recovery image from somewhere and push it to your phone via adb and that should give you a fresh recovery to work with which would eliminate the possibility of a bad recovery hope that helps

is it possible to replace official recovery with clockwork recovery in stock rom?
i have a goldcard but it does not let me sappimg roms different from my stock rom.
i donot have a cw or amon recovery. i need the recovery to get the engineering spl.
since only my stockrom can be sappimg'ed, how can i get the clockwork recovery by replacing My stockrom's original recovery with the cw/amon recovery??
can it be done??
thanks.
-------reason...
i had 3.22 radio, but i flashed another stockrom (htc europe 3.05 rom) which was devided in rom and rom1 files. i flashed rom1, sys, userdata, recovery. rom file had hboot, boot and radio 6.35.
i was unable to flash rom file (hboot, boot and radio 6.35) because when radio starts updating, the screen starts changing colours to grey for, like, 40 minutes (does this normally happen??)
now i have old radio, incompatible hboot/boot file- to correct it, i need Recovery
---EDIT---
MY phones stuck in hboot mode, i have no other option except goldcard, but what about what i have written, does it work?
Download rom manager from the market, although depending on your rom it may not be available (android 2.1) if not download it off Google by typing, rom manager.apk. Once installed you can add the new clockwork recovery or the RA recovery via the application, they both work fine. Hope that's helped!
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA Premium
You can, but i suppose that Amon Ra is better than others.
I would also suggest same solution as Tenpin wrote. Rom manager and it allows to change recovery (I suggest Amon Ra as well).
If you do get your phone sorted, remember the stock Rom reflashes the stock recovery every time you shut your phone down.
Also, I believe if you extract the proper signed Rom.zip from the ruu and put it on your sdcard and press volume down when in fastboot, it should search for and flash the Rom.zip. At least then you will have a Rom to boot into to flash a new recovery.
My old hero messed up once too, I would seriously recommend flashing the s-off bootloader, makes recovering from errors such as this so much easier.
