Major Issues With Quality of Camcorder - EVO 4G General

I have been playing with the Camcorder on the EVO and I have some major gripes with 720p recording.
- Image quality is terrible. Either the sensor source is far less than 1280x720 and they are upscaling or the optics are crap and I can't tell the difference.
- I am unable to record 720p30 under ANY lighting conditions. In good light I get about 22 fps. In low light I get 10 fps!
- Even worse, the FR fluctuates during record. This leads to motion that's more choppy than chop suey. Imagine a clip where one frame is held for 60 ms, and the next for 100 ms, the next for 50 ms. EVO encodes sequences like this routinely.
I expected decent quality 720p30 from the EVO and what I got is something unusable. Why haven't any reviewers mentioned this yet?
Other than this I'm extremely satisfied with the camera. I just feel RIPPED OFF though because they are selling this camera as "HD" and it seems like "HD" is a tacked-on in-name-only feature.

well, it does have 720P output. so i dont think HD was just tacked on.

I totally disagree with that comment. I took this picture today, with default settings - inside of my car. So, that's the windshield reflection you see in the top right. But still, the quality is deafening.

I agree, I'm amazed at the still camera quality.. some examples:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ -- the detail in the clouds, and some of the pics from Muir Woods are just incredible (from a phone, no less!). And the adjustable focal length makes for some nice effects (see "fallen tree")
I haven't had a chance to really try out video yet. Though one of my coworkers noticed that while we were driving on the golden gate bridge and he took a picture out the window, the bars -- supposed to be vertical -- appear in the photos at about a 30* angle... So it is clearly reading from the sensor in a left-right/top-down order and not taking an instant snapshot of the light that's hitting the sensor at the time. But the fact that it actually caught detail of those bars, rather than just appearing as an unrecognizable blur, is impressive.

the picture posted to me look awesome. do you think with froyo, the camcorder issues, if any, would be resolved???
Chris

I am not a pro at cameras\ camcorders but my evo records and plays fine.

The "vertical bars become slanted" phenomenon is called rolling shutter, Google it and you will find a good explanation (I can't post the link 'cause I'm a new user).
It's bad enough when your sensor FR is 30 fps, but the more you get below 30 (ex. the slower you read out) the worse the problem gets.
Still quality is just fine. The major problem with video is that 720p30 is unachievable.

Sorry, but for an 8mp camera, those pics are lousy. Maybe you guys are just used to HTC's previous cameras? I'm sure this is a step up, but they are still pretty bad. At the moment, this appears to be the best camera in an Android phone (that I'm aware of) but that isn't saying much.
Lets see some macro shots to get a better idea of the sensor's ability.

Yeah kind of a bummer, I remember video recording looking great on the Droid's screen but much less so on a pc perhaps in part due to the much higher pixel density on the 3.7" screen (~265 ppi) or ~217 ppi for EVO.
I've heard rumors the next iPhone will have a 5x optical zoom (not digital distortion) & rather not have them win bragging rights over the EVO..

Actually looks pretty good here:
Oh & let the Google TV vs Apple TV battle for market share begin..

My EVO takes great pictures. Sometimes some blur in completely dark environments because it can't see to focus before the flash pops. As it is with any camera operating in a totally dark environment.
To the guy who said it is crappy quality for an 8MP camera...ummm...it's not the quality of the optics that suck here. Colors are saturated properly, everything is good. What you are complaining about is the jpg compression. Which is a software issue.
Maybe it will change. Maybe it won't. Personally there is not a better phone camera on the market. If so I'd like to see some shots posted.
As for the video. Yes. If it's not properly lit, it's pretty pixelated in my opinion. In bright daylight I think it is truly amazing this video is being produced on my phone.

HD2 Camera

is the camera on the HD2 better than the TouchHD.
This is the only thing i wasnt happy with on my touch HD, the camera was unacceptable in anything but daylight conditions.
My older N95 took great pictures in all conditions, the video was even acceptable when filmed in a dark night club, infact the sound was clearly audible from very loud gigs, where as every other phone ive seen was just distorted.
While Id love to progress from Touch HD to HD2, I am unwilling to accept poor camera performance in favour of a large screen.
The I phone is not an option for me either, as I know the camera on that is even worse than the Touch HD.
Please let me know your thoughts on the HD2 camera (ignoring the pink screen problem which is no doubt fixable soon)
Thanks

And that helps him how???
I find the camera on the HD2 better than the camera on the HD, but not amazingly so. I still occassionaly take blurred shots, but it's quicker, and let's face it - it's got a flash!
So the speed and the flash definitely improve the performance, but it's still not an amazing camera. I'll certainly be happier using this than my HD though.

This seems to be the general consensus - better than the Touch HD but not even close to the quality of the camera on the N95.
The camera is amazingly better.
1) Much higher light sensitivity --> less noise, less blur in dark conditions
2) Much faster, focuses automatically, immediately takes the picture when you press the button
3) The flash is great, easily illuminates a room of up to 20qm or objects in up to 4m distance in darkness
The camera is amazing. Much much better than the one in the HD. Of course still not good as cameras found in some camera/dumbphones, but very good for a smartphone. Much better than most competing smartphones, like tue Droid or iPhone.
Here's some comparison shots between the HD2 and the HD, there you can see how much better it is: http://www.ppc-welt.info/community/showthread.php?t=147444
ah, excellent.
Thanks to everyone who left constructive advice, the HD2 is greatly improved.
Thats definately given me more confidence.
So have they solved the pink photo problem?
acutally i think the camera is fine, maybe the flash is a bt too bright but takes good pics.
i found that on the white balance option if i changed it to the icon that looks like an upside down light bulb the pink hue disappeared! and took great pics.

It would be better to keep this question locked to the topic that is covering it don't you think....
Otherwise you are going to get fragmented disinformation where one topic is saying one thing whilst the other could be saying different.

Note particularly the third and fourth images, and how much more detail the HD captures.
EDIT: I include this in the interests of balanced reporting, I make no claim that it is necessarily any more authoritative than maati's link - peruse both and make your own mind up.
The best improvement on this "side" in the new LED flash... but except this.... It's the best HTC camera I've tested (including Magic / Hero)... but it's still an HTC camera
@Shasarak
I honestly can't believe that those shots are from the HD. I've still got an HD myself and the HD2's camera is a HUGE improvement. Nothing less than amazing, except for the 'pink spot issue'.
Look at this: HTC Touch HD is on top, HD2 at the bottom.
(I've even done several pictures with the HD and I took the best one!)
And this is in good conditions! In bad conditions, the difference becomes enormous, because the HD2's sensor has greatly improved light sensitivity.

@Kridek
HTC uses the same cameras as other manufacturers do. They don't make those chips themselves, they buy them from the same suppliers that other handset makers get their chips from. The only difference is software.
I don't know why people always think that HTC cameras are worse than those used by others, because that's clearly not true. Of course thicker handsets like Nokias or some Sony Ericsson ones have better cameras because they can use bigger sensors and optics, but HTC's cameras are just as good as others in comparable (i.e. thin) phones.

Not impressed with the camera

I'm not impressed with the camera quality on this phone. It just seems too dark and when I slightly move the phone about it gets blurry.

What happens if you buy a camera-phone then? Do you have neither a phone nor a camera?
well known facts:
- this is a phone not a camera
- 5mpix used in SGS1 is enought to make quality pictures and record 720p video IN GOOD LIGHT CONDITIONS
- when not enought light pictures/videos become grainy - and that is the problem also in SGS2 (at least it was)
But the SGS2 has an LED flash. Compared to my SGS1 my wife's SGS2 produces *way* better pictures. Agree to all the other well-known-facts.
sgs2 is 8mpix while sgs1 is 5mpix - the picture MUST have better quality =)
same as recorded video is 1080p not 720p in sgs1 ...
as for the led flashlight i had phones with it and only use for it i found was a flashlight ... never was good enought for lighting_up pictures in closed spaces not to mention a picture in the dark, open space ...
at that matter but only that (night pictures) i liked carl zeiss optics in nokia n95, saw a hardware-mod somewhere in forums that takes n95 lens and put it in sgs1 place, will have to check that when original lens will get scratched more
Try HDR on the market.
to the person talking about movement blur, don't move.
Sorry, didn't see this was sgs i forum.
haha yes pictures taken by HDR app are superb ... still that needs 3 ones to assemble that quality =) so not much usefull for taking pictures of moving objects i guess as the process takes lik 3 seconds ?

When I compare two things (pictures, benchmarks, whatever) I like to use same settings (that includes image resolution) as far as possible - and more pix do not mean better quality. If I take a picture of my son in a closed room in the evening the sgs2 DOES take the better picture due to its flashlight (which is not meant to light up dark, open space ). The flashlight also helps to shorten the exposure time which reduces blurryness in those conditions (I *think* - did not check exposure times sgs/sgs2 but the sgs2 definately produces less often blurry images).
Nokia95 lens -> SGS1: Woha, i definately need more time Thanks for mentioning this.
8Mpix compared to 5Mpix means comparing picture 'builded' from 8 milion pixels to one made from 5 milion pixels, so that means better quality however you look into it
as for the led i miss it but not that much ":]
anyways here is the guid of lens changing
[I9000][I9000B][MOD] Camera Glass (replace scratched one)
and here is grainy picture when night_recording on sgs2 also looking like that on sgs1

Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Nikon D5000 DSLR

Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Nikon D5000 DSLR
Why?
I have a week off this week and while my fiancee is working, I thought I wpould charge my camera battery and have a practice. I am a really amateur photographer. By that I mean I own a nice DSLR (Upper Entry-level) and a couple of lenses but I've never really taken much time to get used to it. Today was a great oppurtunity.
Whilst I started taking snaps, i thought "Wouldn't it be cool if..." and here we are.
Disclaimer - Scientific conditions.
Mode:
Whilst I am only an amateur, I am familiar with my camera and its modes. Although I usually shoot in manual mode, adjusting the aperture and shutter speed as I see fit, for a reasonable degree of accuracy, I decided to use Auto mode. This is also what I used on the SGS 3.
Where as I tried to maintain Automode, I did slip into landscape mode a couple of times on the DSLR. Unfortunately I do not recollect which images were taken in each mode. It was mostly Auto though.
Zoom:
I stuck to my 18-55mm lens on the Nikon and used digital zoom on the SGS3. Although these can never be compared, as this is more a "look what the SGS3 can do" thing, I didn't think that should matter.
MegaPixels:
I set both top their top resolution. The DSLR is 12MP so obviously the detail is better when shown on a huge billboard. On a screen which is smaller than that, it shouldn't be noticable. remember, a HD display (1920x1080) is less than 2.1MP
Galaxy Resolution - 3264×2448 pixels
D5000 Resolution - 4310×2868 pixels
Image format:
The SGS3 takes images in .JPG format by standard. The DSLR took them in .NEF (Nikon RAW) and was converted afterwards. Converting RAW to .JPG on a computer (I used UFraw command line tool on Linux) gives a little bit better quality than letting the camera save as .JPG directly
Conclusions
Obviously this test was just for fun and was never intended to show that the SGS3 would be better than an upper entry level DSLR which even now, 3 years after release, can cost upwards of £500 GBP with a basic 18-55MM lens. Well guess what?! It's not better than the DSLR but hey, we never expected it to be.
What you can tell from the images is that where some of the DSLR images were a bit dark in auto mode, the SGS3 had some nice and bright shots. You can clearly see the difference in quality on some shots, but in others, not so much. I was very surprised at how well the SGS3 took pictures and how nice some of them did look, even compared to the superior DSLR, some of the pcitures the SGS3 took looked nicer, if not better.
Slightly related, but the experience of previewing the image taken was MUCH more enjoyable on the SGS3 with its bright and vibrant screen. You can instantly tell if the image will come out blurry or not, which with the DSLR was really tricky. You cna onyl really check if the photo is framed as you expected.
All in all, the SGS3 is a fantastic little camera. It may not be able to keep up with the big boys but it was never intended to. I would never be disappointed whipping it out of my pocket to capture an "of the moment" photograph. I am very impressed.
Further diclaimer
As mentioned, I am not a photographer. I am sure there are others out there who can do much better than I did with both devices. Remember this is just for fun.
I haven't scientifically analysed the outputs of both devices and used any software or anythign like that. If anyone is into that, please feel free to post results here. I would definitely be interested. All I have done, is used my eyes.
The Images
Each photo tells you if its SGS3 or Nikon from the properties but essentially, the first image is always the SGS3, the second is always the D5000

I think it's a Inovative idea to Compare s3 and slr but really a daft comparison
The whole point of an slr is control, and whether Full frame or cropped and the list goes on. Quality of sensor.
As much as the s3 has a reasonable lens it is no comparison to a good slr or even a simple slr.

Disgusting sharpening

The first thing I noticed when using the camera on this phone was how the images looked over processed. Most notably, I did a digital zoom photo yesterday and the sharpening on it was disgusting. It didn't even look like a photo.

See what I mean? All I did was zoom in and take a photo. It looks horrible.
Look at this picture for example
Even just zoomed in a bit you can see way too much sharpening going on
Now I know this phone is a "budget phone" but it supposedly has the same lens as the Galaxy S7 so that isn't really an excuse. It looks like it comes down to it being the processing that moto put in.
Can anybody out there please let me know if rooting my phone and shooting RAW will produce cleaner photos? I would have to guess so, since I can control the sharpening myself. I haven't been able to find any RAW samples from this phone.
is it a software thing? I've converted to snap camera on whatever device.
I'm afraid it's in the firmware. Any camera app I've tried yields the same results
U should probably return or replace u your phone I had the same issue without even zooming
The phone couldn't focus on things right next the camera mine also had pink tints while recording
So I got mine replaced
Now everything works good
It's also the processor. The G5 plus has the 625 while the S7 had the 820 allowing for much better image processing.

Well it focuses just fine, and pictures in day light look alright but there is some heavy noticeable processing going on in the moto firmware.
This picture looks pretty good but if you zoom in just a bit you can really see the over sharpening.
Here is a photo of my Nexus 5x
It looks much cleaner to me. Less over processing and less sharpening artifacts. The processor on the G5 Plus should be pretty comparable to the 808 in the N5x so I really don't think its a processor issue. It seems to me like it was a design choice by Moto. All of the sample photos I have seen also have too much sharpening. I am strongly considering just rooting the device and shooting raw. At least then I can control the sharpening myself
Well then we would have to wait for an update then

It should make no difference, if you do the same processing in software - other than perhaps taking slightly longer to process the photo?
Otherwise, we'll have to shoot RAW if we want the best quality I guess?
It seems to me however, that any settings affecting the image processing quality should have parameters which could be changed?

The processor contains the ISP or the Image Signal Processor which controls HDR, white balance, auto focus, exposure, color filters and so on. The better the ISP the better the image. So while the 2 phones have the same sensor they will never have the same image results because they have different processors and the more powerful chips have better ISP on board resulting in better images even with the same sensor.
The strength of this camera's focusing is in the sensor chip - "dual pixel focus".
All the other things you mention such as white balance, HDR, color filters are applied after the RAW image is taken - so, there's really no reason that you couldn't generate the same quality of image.
if nothing else, I'm upgrading my everyday knock around (2015) moto e. I won't complain toooooo much.
I have to agree with the OP on this one - there is some horrendous post-processing going on with this phone.
I'd love to get that to stop - even if we have to go to RAW/DNG to get it.
Has anyone done the root/Freedcam method described in another thread on here and gotten DNGs from this camera?
I'd love to see how they look... I'll eventually do it when LOS gets stable enough.
wait couple of days more, there will be some nice mods incoming for g5p camera.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Sony XA2 Ultra come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The rear camera is nothing special in my opinion, however the front facing camera takes excellent, wide angle selfies.
Rear camera is good, not stellar. Poor pics in low light. Can't compete with the Samsung's or the Pixels. There is also an annoying shutter lag and is not spontaneous.

I'm not the biggest perfect picture taker, but it seems to me the sensor is plenty well able to pick up everything, but there's crap for software HDR to put it all together. If I focused on the grass, the ground was much brighter in the picture than where I was standing, however the lights were all washed out. If I focused on the lights, that's all you can see. There is plenty of noise in the picture, but I could forgive noise if some manner of HDR could merge different light levels.
Speed: (another large image warning)
I know guns are a hot topic presently, but if we can move past guns good/guns bad, and agree stuff coming out of guns moves pretty fast. This was the best timed shot I think I ever managed. Focus is sufficient up front but suffers at multiple distances. The ejected shell from the shotgun is in air, the wad (part of an assembled shotgun shell) is seen flying away from the gun. Zoom in on the upper center of the picture and the orange target can be seen broken into 3 pieces. I was very impressed that while focus was an issue, there didn't seem to be any movement distortion in the picture.
...after describing the details and looking closer at my images in the post, it seems my pictures are getting cut down somewhere along the line. I'll try to update later with a full size link.
Bad Video quality
I have purchased 2 of these phones about 3 months ago, I personally think the camera quality is terrible, video quality is horrible, and Im not even a big camera user. My wife uses her phone camera constantly, and video is horrible try zooming in on a face from a distance and its all washed out. I have tried different camera apps as well no difference. Today I contacted Sony, and man are they worthless, Im not sure if its a software issue or hardware issue? I thought Sony was one of the main suppliers of cell phone cameras for many different phone manufactures, maybe I'm wrong on that? Anyone have any suggestions, or are we just stuck with a junk camera phone?

Yeah the camera is definitely very mid-range-ish. Probably about like a Samsung J7
I agree Sony support is very unhelpful to. Insisting I must pay to send it to an "authorized technician" smh

Its possible that some of the issues are due to software, I know that my cameras were better before all the Sony updates. I did read that XA2 Ultra will get the 9.0 update probably 4th Quarter 2018 and its not even guaranteed that will fix and any camera issues.
