I have a question I've been trying to resolve looking through the threads and have been unable:
I have a g1 that's rooted running android 1.5, and from what I can tell its either on the official t-mobile firmware or the developers firmware... I want to upgrade to android 1.6 mostly just for the text to voice and the voice navigation in google maps. I don't really want to load custom roms though... Is there anyway to load into android 1.6 and keep root, but have everything else the standard firmware?

You can grab the official ADP1v1.6 firmware and write that to your device for a stock-but-root system image. (note: stupid people will tell you that it doesn't have root. They are incorrect, it most definitely DOES.)

It just gives the impression of not having root by flashing the stock recovery (which many people consider root for some reason)
oh lovely, after following those steps. The radio went fine the phone rebooted fine, but after the recovery image, the phone hangs on the android screen for a long time, and then pops up with continues force close error messages. I also can no longer boot into recovery it gives me a picture of a phone with an exclamation point.
Anyone have any ideas?
oh n/m. That exclamation point screen was in fact the recovery screen, it was different before i installed this. I formatted the memory card and wiped the data, and that seemed to do the trick, I'm up and running in 1.6 developers build. thanks guys =-)

Hey all,
I know this sound a bit amateur, but I was just wondering if it were possible to flash the same G1 Dev Rom onto my Rogers HTC Dream running the newest "perfect" firmware. I would imagine that the HTC one is officially signed so the phone wouldn't have any trouble accepting this...can anyone confirm? I just wanted to make sure before I go ahead and do anything as I'm new to the whole Android thing. Thanks!

You're right. You're definitely an amateur
1) There is *no such thing* as a "G1 Dev". There is an "Android Dev Phone 1" (aka "ADP1"). G1 and ADP1 are both HTC DREAM, as is the thing that was sold by robbers (although the robbers-crippled dream has some minor differences).
2) Though signed, it still won't write onto your phone since it is signed with a DIFFERENT SIGNATURE.
3) If you *did* manage to write it, you would be effectively bricked since the ADP1 kernel won't boot on the robbers-crippled-dream. At this point, it *might* be possible to write the same firmware that you already have on it again to fix the brick, but since nobody has gotten to this stage, it is unknown.

Don't worry, because of the incorrect signature, you couldn't have hurt it even if you tried.
Hey guys, just curious since I havent gotten a chance to use a rooted phone yet.
-When google comes out with 2.2 froyo update, are we able to update it from a rooted rom or does it have to be under stock condition?

You'd probably have to wait until someone post the stock rom of froyo, and then flash that.
Or flash on of the numerous stock ROMs that already exist, and get OTA like the rest of us.
Or wait for cyan for his release which I believe will be soon after the official release.

Once a different recovery is installed on the phone, the OTA system will never work again. Not even if you go back to stock.
This is a complete non issue. The stock 2.2 rom may very well be available to flash here before you recieve the ota if its a rolling release. If not it will be a close race. BTW, The ota looks for a stock officially signed recovery to install itself with, if you do not have one the ota will fail.

Just out of interest (I am not making any judgements), why do you want to go from CM to stock as opposed to a CM modded version of 2.2?
Or are you just assuming 2.2 will drop before CM has time to mod it so want to get on it asap?
ill just wait for cyano to release its froyo version...
I'd be willing to bet that the features present in 2.2 will reach a version of CM before they reach any non-rooted N1. I'm just saying... we already have some of the features currently, i.e. customizable trackball notifications.
that really just depends on when google pushes the sources of 2.2 into AOSP. so chances are that a stock 2.2 will be available sooner than a cyanogen 2.2, but it will be worth the wait

cos my battery life is absolutely shocking now, and things like stock weather program isn't working, cyan just watches LOST season 3 wtf lol

That's not true. I did a warranty replacement a while back and restored the phone to stock before sending it back. I used the SAPPIMG.zip method to restore the shipping ROM, recovery, and radio. After rebooting and setting up the phone, I was offered the OTA update and the OTA completed successfully. Being bootloader unlocked did not affect my ability to get OTA updates.
A little confusion here it seems and I will throw out my understanding. An ota will work if it does not have to access an officially signed recovery, if it does and does not find one it will fail. Once you have installed a custom recovery going back to the stock one will not help in this regard because it is no longer officially signed. 2.2 will require an officially signed recovery to install and everything I read says it will be seen, it will download, then it will fail to install. If this is incorrect than I look forward to learning more about this question as it keeps popping up over and over. I have yet to hear from any owner who was able to update from 2.0 to 2.1 after having installed a custom recovery, seems like there would have been many....
As easy as hacking psp, but then i broke the unwritten rule, i let my phone update a month ago (it said 2.2....so) which took me from the what seemed easy process of rooting a phone at 2.1 to the hard one of 2.1 update1...

I also found a easy way of doing it with the radio but my baseband version is also to high (at least from what Ive read 2 42 02 10 29)
All the stickys ive found seem to be out of date, and thats seems the case every where, i was going to use my update to get a evo instead, being new if i dont let it update it should be easy to root, but i hear after 1/30 you got to pay more, i not sure if thats counts if i activate the phone before that date tho...

Well see i honesly havent tried much, just been doing my homework trying to see what works, what dont, if you say these tuts are on point ill start puting everything ive gathered together and start, ill use this topic if i encounter any problems.

Run the "One click root apk" in the themes and apps forum. Not the universal root cause that gives people problems.
One click root apk will root whatever sprint update your on. Its super easy

Edit: so really the only reason i did this was for the wireless tether, my phone is the only internet i have so i hope it was worth it... but what else can/ should i do with it.... im unsur, can i get true android 2.2, and roms they what an OS, and whats froyo? kinda in over man head lol but i keep getting myself deeper...
well i will reccomend AOSP 0.9.8 it is very good rom....fast and stable...
make yourself a nand back up(you can use Rom manager from the market) wipe...flash and you are ready...
if you dont like it..you got the back up....so you can restore whatever you are running now....

as far as roms yes you want a custom one. yes you can get 2.2, it comes in two flavors, CM6 and AOSP. CM6 allows for lots of customizing. AOSP is the fastest rom you can download for this phone right now with everything working. Personally I would recommend AOSP. If you want to switch later you can(you probably will cause everyone does, its an addiction.)
you need to flash a custom recovery to do custom roms. easiest way to do that is download Rom manager from the market and use it to flash the clockwork mod recovery.
and Froyo is 2.2, Gingerbread is 2.3, and Eclair is 2.1.

I just used z4root to root my Hero and it worked fine using the newest version (1.3 I believe) and the Permanent Root option. The only hiccup that I ran into is that z4root seemed to have gotten stuck on the "Rebooting" screen. I had let it run for about 20 min and hit the Home button then went to applications and found that SuperUser was installed and the phone is actually rooted. Been able to install ROM Manager and use Titanium Backup to remove a bunch of the Sprint and HTC apps.
Today I received an OTA system update version 1.82.405.1 on my HDZ.
Does anybody here received or installed it??
And what kind of update is it?
I'm affraid of losing root again, similar like what happend with version 1.72.
I feel like I'm stating the obvious here, but NEVER EVER install an OTA if you have root! I'm sure you know this now from your previous experiance, but just to save you trouble incase you didn't know. As for the update, I'm not sure what it contains, but it seems like an older update as the newest version of virtuous is based on 1.85.72.2.

But I've read it's safe to flash an OTA update once you've rooted your phone with the Gfree method.
I now running a stock 1.72 rom, rooted with Gfree / psneuter.
In that case I'm not sure, but I wouldn't try it until it's been confirmed to be ok. And while I'm sure you have you're reasons, but why not try out the likes of virtuous? It's pretty much stock sense but with added features and improved performance, and as I said it's also on the latest RUU.
Taking an OTA will *definitely* reduce you to "stock", so even if its safe, it isn't worth it.
Be aware that it *IS POSSIBLE* for an OTA UPDATE to modify your partition 7 and take away radio s-off. The only reason why people tend to say that its safe is ONLY because they never actually HAVE done that.

I don't think applying and offical OTA while rooted on a non stock rom is a good idea. If your willing to take the risk, or don't care about loosing root or getting it back if lost. Then try it out. Be the guinea pig because it doesn't look like you will take the advise of the forum you posted anyways.

yes, it is a 17 Mb package. I got it and installed it. (nothing to lose, I have no root, I do not need it, my DZ is PERFECT without it. I have been tweaking and **** before on WinMo, but not now...)
It said it is camera improvements and other small bugfixes.
All I saw is a different sms counter on the icon, it's white numbers on a black circle, nothing special.
I had a busy day, had no time to play around.
The firmware remains 2.2.1.
I will follow up if I find out anything else.
Update: the mentiones sms counter is for a voicemail of course ))) my fault
I've read the album/gallery bugs are fixed. No need to rescan pictures anymore.

No use as the updates are usually non-important and if they are, someone will extract it and you can flash it by itself without the risk.
HTC hasn't yet released official release notes for this update. As already said it should improve camera, system performance, fix some bugs and also improve htcsence.com -functionality.
htc 1.82.405.1 update
I just updated using the OTA update to 1.82.405.1 on my htc desire z (I have stock android).
But now the touch screen is horizontaly mirrored.
Meaning if i click on home the search button is clicked.
If i touch the icons on the left side, the right side icon registers the click.
Only center of the screen is safe
Let me know if anyone else has this issue after the recent updated.
Hopefully there is a solution out there.
UPDATE:
I did 2x hard resets which didnt help.
However a soft reset did the trick and every thing is back to normal.

If you already have root/S-OFF, then it's only "safe" once the new release has been verified by the devs as not causing anything bad to happen with your root/S-OFF. e.g. in theory there could be a new OTA released that will permanently lock you out of root/S-OFF.
When the 1.72 OTA first came out, it wasn't rootable for quite a while, so folks with root who accepted the OTA lost their root for some time.
Damn, I am getting the feeling the new update drains the battery faster than 1.72,
phone was about empty at 11pm yesterday, it was plugged in until 8 am...
done nothing the entire day actually...
notification-bug seems to be fixed (yes, new counter for sms/mails/etc) and best part: no jumping screen, when writing sms!!! at least till now...
Should I risk to update my unblocked, rooted and sideload enabled ATRIX or not (on the next possible update) ?
As the ATRIX is my first smartphone, I am still not so experienced on the smartphone / Android level. So I would would like to hear your opinions and experiences and ideas.
Would like to give some explanations first. I spent quite some time reading the xda threads and implementing these ideas. Result: my ATRIX is in a very "nice" condition now: Unblocked, rooted and sideloading enabled. I cleaned some annoying apps, did some fine-tuning (all thanks to the xda forum) and I am really happy with this nice little masterpiece of technology.
There are two update possibilities I am talking about:
- Build number (actually on my phone OLYFR_U4.1.8.3)
- Android version (actually 2.2.2)
According to the threads here in the forum, already the build number will get me back to unrooted. Can imagine what a Android version could do.
- So is it really worth ? All the hussle again after the update.
- How can I prevent (just in case) an update ?
Updating to 4.1.83 will also put you on 2.2.2.
You will lose root.
If you have uninstalled any Moto apps you will have to sbf 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 first. If you have frozen any Moto apps, you can just thaw them.
Personally I would back everything up, screenshot your home screens so you can set them up the same in worst case scenario of a wipe,, then go for it.
What all have you done to your phone up to now? i.e. gingerbreak, gladenable, theme......

What update are you asking about if you have 4.1.8.3? Are
you asking about the Gingerbread update? I won't update it
until the functionalities that I currently have are available on
that build.

Actually everything is perfect on my Atrix, after a potential update probably not anymore. So will it be worth to update ? And to get everything back to "normal" (rooted, sideload, ...), the risk to brick the phone ...
Of course nobody really knows now, but how was it in the past with other Motorola smartphones ? For example the update from 2.1 to 2.2 ? What was your experience ?
Anyway. There is still my question, how can I disable an automatic update ? Would be happy, if somebody knows.

I plan on waiting for the update to be out for awhile and read what others are saying about it.
Once they know how to get root, I'll update.
Keep in mind Titanium Backup can backup/restore just about everything after a wipe so it wouldn't be too much work..
I think this next update will be very much worth the hassle of rooting it again (you won't have to worry about sideloading - AT&T is going to enable it). I've read somewhere that for the gingerbread version, motorola's priority was for performance and this next version of motoblur isn't as bad as froyo's. Not only that, but gingerbread can make the 2 cores on the atrix work on every app, not only dual-core-optimized ones, and of course bug fixes, optimizations, etc. "Everything" should improve overall.
I'm in the same boat as you are (sim-unblocked, rooted, sideloaded) and when it goes live, i will wait a couple days before updating to see what people say about it. The only case i won't update it is if it removes sim-unblocking, which i doubt it will. Enabling root will be done eventually, these devs are awesome.

When Gingerbread for the Atrix comes out, you'll lose your root if you update. However, Gingerbread will enable sideloading, which is a huge reason for many AT&T users to root anyway. You will have to go back to stock 2.2.2 in order to receive the OTA update to Gingerbread. It's your decision as to update or not, but I think that the benefits of Gingerbread outweigh the downsides of losing root, etc.
I would say wait for the update, let others who knows what they are doing do the update and root etc. then read the thread and update if/when needed. At least that's my approach. I like Gingerblur 4 on my Atrix.
