[Q] All I want is Frodo 2.2 + root...but how???

All I want to do is upgrade to Froyo 2.2 and retain root so that I can use Wireless Tether. I've been reading several different EVO/Android forums but it seems like the more I read, the more confusing it gets. I'm still a noob, but here are my questions so I hope someone can lay it all out in the open for me.
Currently, my EVO has Unrevoked3 applied so I'm running on the "updated" 2.1, and I have root access and wireless tether is working as of now. Phone specs are:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 2.05.00.06.10
Build/Software number: 1.47.651.1
PRI version: 1.40_003
PRL version: 60665
1) What is the best/most reliable way for me to update to 2.2? Can I use Unrevoked Forever to do so? Or do I have to use some manual method? Toast's method? ROM Manager?
2) I read the steps for installing on the Unrevoked site, but I don't understand the terms it uses. It says to "flash from custom recovery". First of all, how do I access this custom recovery tool or whatever? Second, some ppl said they use a ROM Manager. Other sites say to "boot into recovery". Still, some instructions say boot into Clockwork....How do these method differ? Or are they the same? Which do I use???
3) One post says "After you unrevoke4, you can use your custom recovery image to flash a rooted 2.2 stock rom". I dont understand. A ROM is an image...so how can I use an image to flash another image?? makes no sense =\

Use Simpleroot to fully root. Then flash SteelH's 2.2 Stock Rooted ROM/

Power + Volume Down while the phone is off boots your into the bootloader. You can then enter your custom recovery from there. Or you can use Rom Manager/Spare Parts to boot into recovery directly within your phone. Clockwork is a custom recovery; AmonRa is the other custom recovery. Use either one.

You need to install a custom recovery, ie AmonRa or Clockwork (an image) so you can flash a ROM (another image)

Recovery is already in your phone, but you need to flash a custom recovery after you root. Simpleroot will allow you to flash a custom recovery on the last step.

Not relevant, when you are on 2.2, you won't be notified of OTA updates. After you root, NEVER accept any OTA. Wait for the updated rooted roms.

Don't use Unrevoked. Root using Simpleroot and flash your downloaded ROM afterwords.

No one can really prove that an updated RPI/RPL affects your phone in positive ways. Your RPL will be updated. RPI will be 1.34 after Simpleroot, this forum just figured out how to get 1.40 RPI today (go read the dev forum)
8) Same deal with the Wimax and Radio updates. What do they do? Why do ppl want to retain them so badly, and if they are so important, why don't the updated ROMs or OTAs have them included?
Wimax and Radio updates improves your 4G/Radio/Data performance. They should be flashed after you flash your rom.
9) What's the difference b/t a Nandroid backup and a Titanium backup? And which one should I do?
Nandroid backup creates a complete image of your phone. Titanium backup only backs up your apps.

OK then, all the LOTR references aside, I was in your shoes not to long ago. You could have done a little more reading or googling (something like "how to root EVO"), as these forums usually contain a number of threads with titles something like "Moron-proof guide to....."
Anyway. Unrevoked seems to be considered a somewhat incomplete root according to most ROM threads (I don't know the details to speak intelligently on
the matter).
Here is what I did, and it worked well.
1) Get SimpleRoot. This will let you root your phone for real.
NOTE: I don't know if you need to get rid of unrevoked before this; maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in on this one.
2) Step 2 of SimpleRoot is to flash recovery. There are two options; I chose RA. There are a few threads that talk about pros/cons of each.
For simplicity sake, I think of "recovery" as a program that lets you do lower lever system stuff, like flash files, do backups, etc. The general way to reach it is to hold VolDown while powering up you phone, then selecting "recovery".
Anyways, after you've flashed recovery, you'll be able to flash whatever ROM you want.
3)If you want stock 2.2 get THIS. Get the radios as well. Generally there are instructions with the ROMS, READ THEM.
You should have three zips. Put them on your sdcard. Then in recovery select flash from zip file (or something like that). Do that for all three with reboots in between.
You should now have the latest stock ROM and radios.
There are a ton of other ROMs out there. NO one will be able to tell you which one is the best, so don't ask.
Wireless Tether - the newest version is floating around here somewhere (pre7). It works well with the rooted stock 2.2
The PRL/PRI debate is still going on. You can read the million threads and see if you want to worry about it. I don't.
As far as backup goes, the more knowledgeable folks can speak to the details. A simple way of describing it is nand backup (from recovery) is like a ghost of your system, where as Titanium is more of an apps/settings kinda thing.
I strongly suggest reading the guide threads to gain more insight.
And, of course, I didn't come up with any of this stuff. If you find anyone's work helpful, then you should thank/donate to them.

It's funny that I have no clue how to do this, because I full-rooted my EVO with the first firmware and never looked back. I've just been running custom recovery and custom roms ever since. I need to root a friends phone soon, so I guess I'll have to learn.

After much lurking and wiki reading I would like this stickied as well.

To get Frodo 2.2, you would have to write a novel, placing him in a setting similar to The Terminator. From there, create a back story on how his first version was inferior and lacking superior abilities, dubbing the need for a new version. After that have a fight scene of him going against his creator, thus needing to make him version 2.2. The non violent version. From there he would have the dramatic speech in a weird code of language.
Simple root, click click, RA, click. Power button volume down. Wipe, wipe. wipe. rooted rom zip, radio zip, reboot, power button volume down wimax zip, reboot.
After that Frodo will walk away into the sunset, in search of the future version of him, Frodo 3.0 - Fighting in the conquest of his arch nemesis, Apple Conner.

i hope im posting this in the right place, ive never really messed with forums before, but anyways
ive done everything there is to do to get a custom rom on my streak (StreakDroid) including the whole flash recovery, when i do that it all seems like its working, but when i go to where you are supposed to install the streakdroid (when you turn your phone on with both volumes ect) soo when i get the screen with the blue letters, its tottally different it says something like "insert a SD card containing an update file(/sdcard/update.pkg and the only choice it gives me is press up on the volume to turn device off. BTW i did already had the streakdroid on my sd card. someone please HELP me

Do this - you do not need root to use that method and is you read the previous links I posted you will figure out how to use StreakMod Recovery even if you aren't rooted.

I got same problem when I installed custom rom at very first time from stock 2.2.
Do this if still can boot to stock rom..
1) Rooting with Gingerbreak.apk , this will work..
2) After rooting done, use R.E and change one file in the system as this file automatically blocked custom recovery when reboot so your problem happened... your DS5 still booted on stock recovery even already flashed StreakMod recovery...
Read this.
3) After modifying one system file then flash StreakMod recovery then you can continue....

i tried that too, but like ive said when i first made this post, when i go into streakmode (when i turn it on with both volume bottons ect) and go into mode after that all i get is something like for an emergency restore blah blah , idk whats wrong, ive done the streakmod right and still,

i have att 2.2 rom it wont allow me to install other source apks

Regarding the issues faced by the OP on this thread:
1. If you are seeing mention of an update file when trying to access StreakMod Recovery, then you let the Streak boot regularly once you installed StreakMod, rather than immediately booting into StreakMod Recovery. If you let the Streak boot normally, StreakMod Recovery gets overwritten. If you're trying to install StreakDroid, then you need to hold down volume down and up as soon as you finish flashing StreakMod Recovery via Fastboot to use it.
Custom ROMs do not have the problem with recovery images being overwritten.
2. The recommended method of rooting a Streak is to flash StreakMod Recovery and then flashing Superuser.zip through it. One click rooting methods are not 100% reliable. The OP is attempting to flash a custom ROM, which doesn't require flashing Superuser.zip. It DOES require flashing StreakMod Recovery.
3. AT&T was supposed to permit sideloading on newer AT&T ROMs. Go to Settings>Applications and make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked. If the option is not present in the ROM, then either the ROM must be changed or a PC application such as the Sideload Wonder Machine must be used.
OP, you were attempting to change the ROM to StreakDroid. Did you change your mind?

Friend gave me an Atrix 4G. He is big on experimenting, rooting, custom ROMs and all that. I am not. At all. I want to use it on t-mobile. I DO get a signal and can text. MMS doesn't work and motoblur wont let me set up an account. This results in no access to email other then Gmail. Basically, I want to bring the phone back to its original (or close as possible) state. Hopefully, that will solve some of my issues.

It sounds like you need to set up a proper T-Mobile APN. (you have a T-Mobile SIM card currently installed?)
If you can get on Wifi, try to go the the Play store and download Tweakker or other APN utilities that enter the APN for your based on your carrier.

Yes. I have a t-mobile SIM card installed. My concern is what the previous owner may have done and whatever ROM is loaded on this phone. Can I somehow bring it back to stock or get a super stable, close to stock as possible ROM first and then start addressing the quirks I have?

Is this an AT&T branded phone? I'm not sure if getting back to stock is necessary, and if you do get back to stock, you might be SIM locked to AT&T (I could be wrong however). If you want to flash a fresh, stock ROM but still be rooted, SIM unlocked, etc., find a 2.3.6 Fruitcake in this forum or try NottachTrix 4G ROM.
however, I'd wait till others weighed in before doing anything. Honestly, I'd try getting your APN (download Tweakker app and walk through the steps) going now and if that solves your issue, your ROM might be working fine for you... my $0.02

1. Download the fruitcake .zip you want (webtop also, if you want it)
2. Do a full wipe with fastboot (search if you're unsure how to)
3. Boot into recovery and flash the .zip you downloaded from step 1
4. Reboot and you're done
This will put you back to stock. I can't remember if fruitcakes are pre-rooted, but if not you can easily root again.

Alright, now we're getting somewhere.

that "unlocked" bit on start up means your bootloader is unlocked, doesn't have anything to do with the SIM card. All this means is that you can flash a ROM since the phone is "unlocked"

the fruitcake .zip goes on your internal sdcard. BUT, before you start doing anything, please go through the stickied threads in this section and read up on how to flash ROMs to your phone. This will include how to wipe your phone using the fastboot commands and how to flash the fruitcake .zip.

Before installing any ROM or Kernel I suggest you do the following to help prevent error, boot-loops, etc. Also, it's a good idea to flash a new ROM or Kernel on a fully charged device:
1) Download which ever ROM or Kernel you plan on flashing and have the .zip on your device ready to flash.
2) Backup your apps (not system data), contacts, etc. Also consider making a CWM backup of your device, just in case.
3) Boot into CWM Recovery
4) Wipe Dalvik Cache (under advanced in CWM)
5) Wipe Cache Partition
6) Wipe data/factory reset
6a) If you're using ROM Manager/CWM you will need to reboot the device after step 5, and upon reboot enter fastboot mode and enter the command: "fastboot -w" or "moto-fastboot -w" if you prefer using moto-fastboot. Then type "fastboot reboot" and upon reboot make sure to enter Android Recovery again, so that you can flash the ROM/Kernel.
7) Install .zip from SD Card (choose the .zip you wish to install)
8) If you installing a radio, theme, kernel, etc. on top of a ROM, I would suggest redoing the whole wipe process again between flashes.
9) Reboot the Device
- If you get a boot loop, try entering Android recovery and re-wiping the chace and data, and perhaps try reflashing the ROM/Kernel. Or if you made a CWM backup, you can always restore that."

Ok, sorry I wasn't that detailed in my other post and assumed you were on your phone (my bad). First things first, read the N00b guide.
1. Anytime you download CWM .zips, put them on the root of your phone's sdcard. You'll need them there in order access them from recovery. ( note: sdcard=internal sd card & sdcard-ext=external sd card for blur ROMS )
2. Fastboot commands are executed from the command line. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory containing fastboot.exe in order to use it. The Noob guide should have links to all the fastboot commands you'll need.
3. With the Atrix's unlocked BL, holding Volume Down when turning the phone on will bring up a series of bootmodes to choose from. This is how you get into fastboot, recovery, RSD, etc. Navigate through the choices with Volume Down. Select one by pressing Volume Up. You should only ever really need Fastboot and Android Recovery.
4. CWM is used to flash .zips (ROMS, kernels, apps) while in recovery mode. Use romracer's to make things easier on yourself later.
Read through the N00b guide and this will all make perfect sense.

I have no idea what Im doing. I think because this phone has been tampered with so much already, it's making it extra tough to work with.
I managed to install CM7. Its the only ZIP file that actually seemed to take. I still dont understand fastboot , in the sense that I don;t know when Im supposed to see a command prompt. Also, now, CM7 is asking me to upgrade to premium and I have to pay for it. There doesnt seem to be a free way of installing it so that I can sync all my info through my google account. Ugh. Im not cut out for this but Ive been screwing with this literally since 730 this morning.
**CM7 with google apps packet installed. So far, so good. Im happy with this considering its pretty close to stock gingerbread, kinda like my G2. Now, Im hopefully done messing around. Would be nice if they release a solution for the fingerprint scanner or if I can get my gmail to auto sync but at least I can stop obsessing for the time being. Great help guys, thanks so much!!!!

[Q] A little help needed upgrading to ICS

Hi all, I'm running a rooted A500 (Android 3.1 build number Acer_A500_4.010.13_COM_GEN2) using the 2.6.36 Honeyvillian 1.0 kernel (so I could OC) and would like to upgrade to a rooted ICS. But since I changed from the stock kernel I get a little confused trying to follow other threads on what to do. The threads seem to start out on topic but tend to drift and for somebody like me, that can make it very hard to understand. I'd like to stay away from a custom ROM, no insult to the hard working dev's intended. You guys have saved alot of my devices from ending up on the top shelf of the closet. I'd like to upgrade to a "stock" rooted ICS with proper bootloader, kernel, etc. If I decide later to try a dev's ROM then I'll always have that option, but since I've never messed with ICS...stock may do all I need. I'd like to root for OC because some of the things I do seem to run better if the device is OC'd. So, what I need are a clear set of instructions on what to do. OTA's dont work, I'm guessing thats because of the root and kernel. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are 2 threads with Stock rooted ICS roms in the developer section. Read each and choose the one that suits you. Also, you may need to separately update the bootloader. To do this there is a new tool in the developer section called afterota 1.02. This will help automate the process for you.

Thanks Cruise, but thats where the problem comes in. I've read over the threads you mentioned and I get lost. Because the threads are a generic install method and cant be refined to match my exact situation I dont know where to start. I dont know if I need to return to stock kernel before I do anything else or if I can flash the new stuff the way it is. Do I need to flash the bootloader first or the ROM and what about flashing recovery? Thats why I asked for a clear step by step, the Dev threads tend to be a little hard to follow for somebody with my novice knowledge.

If you want to go completely stock (stock kernel, non-rooted), then you need only to install one of the Stock ICS Roms. This set's your bootloader back to a stock condition. So that's simple enough. You can do this through CWM
You said you're on Honeyomb right now. So my suggestion, is to follow these steps to upgrade your a500 to ICS.Go Here and read the steps;

Pay attention to step 4. You have a choice. Stock Rom with Full Root, or (in small print (stock rom no root).
If you decide to install Stock Rom No Root, then skip steps 5 and 6. Just copy the file to your EXT SD Card, boot to your recovery (pwr & Vol-) and install Zip From SD. It'll be a done deal. Recovery gone, ICS Stock bootloader and rom.
I have you do steps 1-3 because I want you to write down your UID!!!!!! It's the only thing that will save you if something messes up.
Then you can decide if you want to root and install some custom stuff later.

MD, can you run setCPU w/o Root? I didn't think so. Since this OP requests the ability to OC specifically I think that the steps listed would all need to be followed in Civato's post.
RR, Here are the steps I recommend, it's an opinion, and I think the best route to take as a fairly novice rooter, I've done my A500 many times and BN Nooks, but nothing else and am not a DEV, but have professionally been in IT for 20 years...so I use novice loosely here...
First, know why you're getting your CPUID:

Second, select which ROM you want on your tab, I recommend putting a couple on the MicroSD card so that you can test them. DON'T INSTALL ANYTHING, JUST PICK A COUPLE OF ROMS AND PUT THE ZIPS ON THE SD.

Third, follow the steps in the post that MD listed, read twice, run once...

Fourth, flash one of the ROMs you chose previously while in recovery. Can't give you steps on this because they are all different unless you're just using the option in step 4 of the above post (stock w/ root)

Fifth, not sure if you can OC the stock w/ root or not, but if not pick a custom ROM and test several, they're all great, and see what fits your needs best. I use Flexreaper Extreme and love it, posted below, but look at ALL of them and find the one you like best, they're all GREAT! We have great DEVs here.

Thanks everybody for the info but I think I'll be staying on HC for now. The linked threads are the problem I mentioned in the OP. If you look at those threads with novice eyes they are incredibly hard to follow. Not sure why I cant find simple instructions but I do appreciate everyone's help. Maybe somebody will come up with a guide for dummies. Until then I guess I'm stuck with HC. Thanks again for the info.

I use the manual method to go to apx mode but each to their own...
Now, follow each step. Make sure each step has been followed EXACTLY. Don't skip ahead or you will regret it, sooner than later...
If you have a doubt, go back a step.

Where do I find the correct .a500apx flash package? The last step in the Automated Flashing Tools section says to turn off the tablet and power on. I've read you're supposed to flash a ROM before turning off the tablet. Which one is correct? Can I do this with my current configuration as described in the OP or do I need to return my kernel to stock? And last...is ICS really worth the trouble? Thanks again for everybody's input. According to the written steps., you have to download the flash package you want to use from here;

Save then to the same directory you unzipped the tools.
Just checked and everything is in order, so looks like you missed a step
Actually, you really don't have to flash a rom before restarting. If you have a ICS rom installed, more than likely it will boot. (I hope) However, most custom roms have kernels altered to work with the unlocked bootloader. But I would try with your current ICS configuration. If you have any issues, then you can install the custom ICS rom that you saved on your SD Card.
Is it worth it? I think so. Eventually, all support for HC based roms will end. It's the nature of the beast. Most people will be on ICS, and if you have issues with HC, you may not get any recent support.
It's like having a Froyo rom, and trying to get support when most are on Gingerbread and moving to ICS.
You will get responses like "upgrade your device". I will in the near future, end all support for my HC based roms.

When I save the file to my computer it no longer has .a500apx in the file name or extension. for example, "a500-icsv6-pubrecovery0.2.a500apx" (from the index of bundles) is downloaded and saved as "a500-icsv6-pubrecovery0.2.zip" so do I extract it and select that file when asked by the utility tool? The guide for the tool says not to select the .zip but to select the .a500apx file. but I dont see one to select.

Ok, the link I sent you, is an index of all apx files. It should download as an apx file (I just now checked, and it downloaded and saved as an apx.)
Not sure why they are saving as zips on your system, as none of them are in a zip format. Try doing a "file save as"
Sorry for confusion about rom. I forgot you have an HC rom. I'm running several threads right now for folks with issues. Downlaod an ICS rom to your SD card, so you can install it after you update your bootloader.

Thanks MD, trying to download the apx files doesnt work for me. Not sure why but .zip is the only option I'm given even if i use "save as". So if you could upload the files for me I'd appreciate it. Also, since I will have to disconnect the tablet from the PC after flashing the bootloader can I just power it off, disconnect from PC, reboot into recovery and then flash the new ICS ROM? I also want to be sure that coming from a stock (but rooted) HC rom with a custom kernel wont affect anything. Thanks again for all your help.

I zipped 4 apx packages for your 500. They have the ICS Booltoader and different recoveries. Unzip them to the same folder as your installation package.

Yes, after you finish the bootloader/recovery installation process, turn tablet off. Press and hold Vol- and PWR till you see 2 lines of text in upper left corner, then release both. This will be your recovery menu. From here, you need to follow the instructions from the Rom page where you got your new Rom for the installation. Pretty simple really.
Also, I can't advise you on which recovery to use. I haven't tried the public recovery or TWRP yet.

Thanks MD. Got the files downloaded. I'm gonna read over the threads a few times and make sure I havent missed anything and I also want to research some of the ROM's available. I'll probably give it a try in the next few days. Thanks again for all your help.

**UPDATE**
After reading the threads multiple times and following the instructions carefully I am now running ICS 4.0.3 with updated bootloader!! Everything went fine with only a couple problems that I was easily able to overcome. I'd like to address those problems so if anybody else has problems, 1: when entering the sbk its important to note that the spaces between the sets of numbers ARE needed, and the 0x at the beginning of each set has to be typed with a lowercase "x". 2: I used ezterry ICS 1.031.00stock- full root with busybox, and more tweaks and a500 public recovery. Following the instructions for this ROM I used the "clean up tablet" option in recovery. This DOES NOT do a full data wipe. So first boot had my custom boot animation and all my other apps and settings still there. ICS didnt like this and kept forcing reboots. I had to do a full data wipe and all is good now. I'm on ICS rooted stock and OC'd and loving it. Thank you all for your help, without your input I dont know if I would've tried this but I'm glad I did and I really appreciate everyone taking time out of their busy schedules to help some guy in NY get some ICS love. Thank you all again!

[SOLVED] Vibrant Root Concerns

Hey there. I rooted my Vibrant successfully, but realized I left some important things out. I used this guide to root my Vibrant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
The problems:
1) I can't nandroid (not that I need to, I only have 4 apps)
2) I would like to install either Miui v4 or CyanogenMod 9 but cannot as my recovery screen does not show me the options to do so (I only get the 4 options you normally would get unrooted, such as "Reinstall Packages"), so I'm stuck with the lame default homescreen.
3) I'm currently on 2.1-update1; should I upgrade to 2.2? If so, must I unroot to upgrade, and then reroot? And if this were the case, how do you unroot, and can I reroot using the same method in the link above?

and noticed the line "This guide assumes the Samsung Vibrant already has Android 2.2 build UVKB5 already installed on it."

I'm not sure how you don't have CWM recovery if you followed the guide as it is written. Maybe its because the 2.1 is updated? I would do the following and see if that's all it takes. You definitely don't want to update to stock 2.2 via Kies or anything of that nature.
Worst case scenario, we can have you Odin back to stock JFD. You'll be smooth sailing from there.
Search the forums and find the update.zip for CWM for our Vibrant.
Put that on the lowest level of your INTERNAL storage. Not your microsd card. For example f:\update.zip
Now go to your boring 4 option stock recovery and select reinstall packages. It will reboot to the same boring screen. Select reinstall packages again, and it will reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Let me know if that does anything for you. Also what version of stock recovery do you have?

Can pull that directly from my signature, if OP wants. (Only works on Eclair [JFD] build btw)
Also OP, You will have to have a ROM that you are going to want to flash saved on your Internal SD card. Jsut download it, put in a folder and follow the ROM OP's instructions. Since you are fresh and new, I would NOT suggest flashing anything of ICS or JB until you get the hang of things first.
Read, read and then read somemore. When it comes time to flash ICS or beyond, there is a guide in my signature. Good luck and make sure to hit Toast's "Thanks" button. He is a good asset to have around here.

I'll try the Odin thing out first before I even try to flash (you need root first before flashing, I'm assuming). Just out of curiosity, what is JFD and Odin? I'm still gonna try it out using the guides found here, but just curious.
EDIT: Damn, it worked like a charm! Now I have CWM. The mistake I made was that I only installed the Superuser/ROOT and not both. Gonna play with it for a bit now
