Hi,
I have just bought a HTC HD2 from T-mobile to realise I can't upgrade the ROM through the official HTC website.
I would like to know from Virgin Costumers whether they have tried to upgrade the ROM of their HTC HD2 through the Official HTC website and whether it worked.
I am asking this because I am still on the trial period and also because of warranty issues if I try to upgrade trough another route apart from the T-mobile's...
So, the question is...
Have you got a HTC HD2 from virgin? Have you upgrade the ROM through the HTC website?
If it's vendor locked you'll need to flash HSPL to install a stock or custom ROM...see this thread for details:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
If I do install another ROM they say I loose the warranty...
As I still am in the trial period I could just return the mobile. But for this I need to know whether the HTC HD2 from virging is also branded or not... So I can go and get one from them and do the upgrades myself through HTC website... Withought loosing any warranty.
You can revert back to the original SPL/ROM if you need to return it for any reason...
As for the Virgin HD2, only way is putting the S/N into the ROM download page on HTCs support site and see if it allows a download. If not, it's locked
There's at least a dozen of threads about it. Don't be lazy and use search!
You won't loose the warranty, you can flash the phone back to it's original state in case you need to send it back for repairs.
You can download the original T-Mobile ROM from in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577717 so you can always go back if you need warranty work! I was reluctant to flash, but I did it from the original T-Mobile ROM and it has transfromed my HD2... I'm using MIRI 6.5 ROM and it is awesome, fast, stable, more RAM (with the right radio) and best of all, Youtube... GO ahead and do it. You think the HD2 is good now, wait until you unleash some of it's real potential....
Yes, that is why I am asking if there is someone who is a virgin costumer to help me with this...
I need to know if they have tried and what the outcome was.
About the warranty... The problem is that if I upgrade to another ROM and the mobile has a hardware fault that doesn't allow me to downgrade to the original ROM I suppose I would loose the warranty. This is a risk I may not want to take...
I have been talking to the tmobile technical people a lot after I realised I couldn't upgrade to a new ROM via HTC... Very annoying to know it is not possible whatsoever.
and as proof, I flashed mine back to the original ROM earlier this week. Search the ROM forum for posts by a member called 'football' who posted links to the TMo UK ROMs.
The flash back to the original ROM worked just fine, BUT it's a rubbish ROM so I'm back on 1.66
lol @ everyone pushing for the HSPL option, , , , lets not forget you cant uninstal HSPL if, for instance, the sd card reader has failed, , how would you get that fixed on warranty??
I'm not knocking it, HSPL is the first thing i did, just pointing out that restoring the warranty isn't foolproof.
in this post here a virgin user claims the phone is unlocked to the HTC website.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=632892
I didn't want to cause such turmoil...
Just want to know, from a Virgin customer, if they have managed to install the ROM update through the HTC website... if when they add their mobile serial number they are given the download option or they are barred with this message: "Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device."
Thanks guys for the help
My son is on Virgin and his is unlocked out of the box I'am on T-Mobile (locked ) ) I am still deciding whether to update to one of the new roms on xda del. or hang out for an official rom from T-Mobile. Which I believe will be released soon with a big?????.

I had a flash fail this week. When I started the phone it booted to a black screen with some sort of warning triangle. Somehow HSPL had been removed in the botched flash and the SPL was back to 1.42.000, so putting a LEOIMG.nbh on my SD card just resulted in a 'Not Allowed' message being displayed.
However, I was still able to reflash the original TMo ROM from my PC via USB using the exe that you can find on the ROM forum. I would expect that this will only work with the exe for a ROM issued by your network though, so make sure you have that saved before you flash anything.

No doubt you flashed an official rom from the sd card, that is the only way HSPL can be removed. I really really advise people against using sd card for anything except your phones original rom. So easy to make an error.
Virgin UK HD2 is unlocked
I am a Virgin UK customer and my HD2 is indeed unlocked. When I first boot I had to select Virgin Mobile from a long list that included all the major carriers. I have no problems in updating ROMS. Their customer support is without doubt the best I have ever experienced. I do not work for them. My brother is with T-Mobile, his phone is locked down with Crap software. I am SOOOO glad I am not with them. Just check their forums. They are still on ROM 1.43 from october... no YouTube... other stuff missing and buggy... Disgrace.
Original poster: if you want the phone on contract from T-Mobile but unbranded, you could buy it through some third-party mobile-phone store chain like Car Phone Warehouse or Mobile Phones Direct. Their phones are all unbranded.
If you want to install the HTC ROM without using HSPL you could always use a gold card to flash it.

I must agree with the above. I am with T-Mobile, got my HD2 at the end of January and it had ROM 1.43. They also stripped out YouTube and Co-Pilot! I downloaded a poor-man's version of YouTube as discussed in other threads (i.e. using the IE browser on the phone to download the cab file) and thought I was cool, but with T-Mobile taking an age to release the update ROM (I have heard March, but I wouldn't hold my breath!) I decided to use HSPL and update to 1.66 from the HTC website. Best decision I made!
Not only are all the little bugs fixed, I know have the 'proper' YouTube app back (beautiful!), Co-Pilot (trial version) plus a Windows Task Manager app (very useful!).
I did alot of reading before taking the plunge though, and made backups of backups, had a roll-back plan (admittedly untested) and followed each stage implicitly! But it was very striaghtforward due to the guys on this forum doing a fantastic job!
I never made one call on my T-Mobile HD2 before I flashed over to stock HTC ROM.
Years of HTC devices and operators ROMS told me not to wait until later!

I did exactly the same!
As soon as I turned it on and saw that horrid T-Mobile logo, I turned it off again and flashed it with the HTC WWE Rom
I got an HTC Legend from Vodafone UK about a month ago, and I want to remove the Vodafone branding (especially since Vodafone seem to intent on adding rubbish to their branded phones at the moment - you only have to look at what they've just pushed out to the Samsung Galaxy S).
I'm happy with creating a Goldcard, but I've got a couple of questions:
Is it possible to make a Nandroid backup of the branded ROM currently on my device so that in the case of a fault I stand a chance of being able to restore the branded firmware so I can get the device repaired under warranty?
I'm fairly certain I will, but can someone confirm that I'll get OTA updates from HTC as and when they get released?
Many thanks!

Nandroid backup not possible without a recovery partition which can be loaded only on rooted phone
However, you can always flash back a Vodaphone RUU if needed
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Legend
Direct link:
RUU_Legend_Vodafone_UK_1.32.161.4_R_Radio_47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L_release_126590_signed.exe
For point 2, yes you'll get OTA, depending on which version you install and your SN (and of course if there's a newer version) it may take more or less time before you get it
Any word yet if/when Bell/Virgin will be rolling out 2.2 to Canadian users?
If I don't get it relatively soon I'll probably root. Is that more difficult to do with the Bell build?
Any suggestions from rooted Bell users?
No word yet. Canadian carriers suck at issuing updates in a timely fashion. I rooted my Legend over the summer and installed the Vodafone 2.2 build recently with no problems. For the root, you'll need to downgrade to the 1.31 RUU before you can successfully root.
Hi,
I wrote to Virgin Mobile support on November 30 and I got the following answer:
Hi there - HTC is currently working on this update and we're hoping to have it within the next couple months. We'll keep you guys up-to-date online. Stay tuned!
Lots of Love,
Virgin Mobile

And before that I wrote to Bell support and never got answered.
Personnaly, I found that «next couple months» is very long!

Bell never answer questions I email them, HTC Legend related or not.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I made a thread about this over at howardforums. somebody responded saying Virgin is working on it and they expect it to be out in January, and if there are any delays, early February.
I got tired of waiting for Virgin to come out with Froyo, so I rooted and flashed Cyanogen on my Legend and couldn't be happier. There is a bug with voicemail notifications, but I'm sure that will be fixed soon.
When (and IF) Virgin has an update, I'll do it on my wifes phone, but the added features that Cyanogen gives is well worth it.

That's pretty brutal. I love my Legend, but I really regret buying it from Bell. I've had nothing but bad experiences with them.
Which rooting guide has the most success with the Legend?
I'm fairly new to this, so I'll have to do my homework before attempting a root.
Maybe a good December project.
i work for virgin mobile and own the legend myself.
I ask my DM, and manger almost weekly about the update only to hear that they have no idea.
I call technical support (store line/regular line) and no one there knows either.
I also check our daily updates.. daily. Only to find nothing about the legend day after day.
I've been holding my breath for the update, but i don't suggest you do the same.
Unbrand your phone by installing the WWE version and you will probably get the update faster than Bell or Telus.
Hopefully it's coming Monday.
--io
The update is likely only days away so i suppose it's a funny time to ask about debranding.
My main issue is that I don't know what rom to use from the shipped roms website... a little bit of a text explanation would be great.
I still don't know what RUU means... or what WWE is... and i've been actively doing some reading on the subject.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!
go to the wiki!!!! everything is there!!!!
Haha, that post was actually quite useful
RUU = Rom update utility
WWE = World Wide English
So all I have to do is pick the most recent WWE version and I'm good to go?
I got annoyed with the flip-flopping and waited until after the halfway mark in the month. I've rooted my phone and it works perfectly.
I found that Blayo's ROM to run extremely well on the Legend.
Sorry for bumping it again ( I've been monitoring this thread and everytime i see it bumped up, it gives me hope... but only to find out we are all asking the same thing ... WHEN?!!)
Since BELL discontinued the Legend, does this mean when (if?) Virgin releases the OTA update, BELL users like me will get the same VIRGIN update as well show up on our phone?
The post about updating it with the WWE version... if i understand it correctly, the steps are:
1. Create a gold card... i saw a thread about a manual (albeit complicated for the non-techno geek.. ) way and an automated way using a software someone wrote
2. Run the latest WWE that has been posted (this is supposed to debrand our phone so that we can "see" the SOftware Update for WWE, right)
3. Check the Software Update on the phone and i should see the Fryoyo Update. ( I assume if we apply update, the ROM Update (data) it will download on the phone will be billable...or count as your data usage)
Does this sound about right?
I'm keeping this update via WWE as my last option if the OTA does not see the light of day...for us BELL users..
At this point, i'd say it's 70/30 that bell does not get the update. Just because as you've said, it's a discontinued phone for bell. with a small install base.
Hopefully Virgin/Bell decide to push it to bell sets. I'm not sure if they'd have to prepare two versions for that though. From what i understand, we're only a few days away from finding out.
It's funny, Bell Discontinued the Legend because they couldn't keep them in stock due to HTC having a lack of stock because the Amoled screen wasn't being produced fast enough. hence why they switch to a different screen for the Legend. Most people think it was just old or selling poorly when in fact those are both false.

There was noise about an update in Mid-Jan from Virgin, Bell as far as I remember has discontinued support and it's unlikely that there's going to be an update. You won't get the OTA update unless Bell releases it. I'm rather dissapointed with the promises that keep being broken for our rather expensive service... Root your 'phone.
The procedure is :
Create a Goldcard. As you mentioned there's very easy to follow guides out there.
Downgrade your phone to an earlier version of the software. This permits rooting your phone.
Root your phone. This will allow you to install a ROM other than the Carrier's ROM.
Install either a stock ROM (WWE) or a custom ROM.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I am using Blayo's ROM, which is almost identical to the stock FroYo ROM, but with a few tweaks that just make the phone feel nicer. I would reccomend looking into some of the other ROMs as well. You may find something you like. Android's about choice and this is one great advantage of rooting your 'phone.

I'm gonna give it up to the end of Jan and if there are no updates, i'll definitely go this way... im out of space to install anything else... angry birds and talking tom are taking so much space... had to remove my talking tom to install some smaller apps.
On Facebook, the guy from Virgin told that they had problems with the update so they are doing more testing...
If you want to be up to date, I really suggest you to root your phone and try a rom. You won't lose any functions on your phone and you'll never have to wait again.

Hello there, i'm new to this flashing ROM, rooting and stuff...
In your post, it sounds easy, create a golden-SD (follow the guides), downgrade and update the WWE...
i got lost on the second step... how do you downgrade the phone? I have a VM legend 2.1 w/ update 1 and seems like VM is not giving out the update. I'm thinking going your way but don't know how to downgrade the phone.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.
Hello!
I have scoured the internets as much as I can but am having some issues finding a way to update my phone. It was given to me free from a friend.
HTC Magic
Android 2.1
32A
Radio 6.35.x
Rogers Canada
I have unlocked it and have a Bell Canada sim card. I do not have any data plan, as I only use it on WiFi for any data.
I wish to update to the official 2.2 Android, basically just the update Rogers customers would have received back in December when it went live with over-the-air. I tried to hit "check for updates" and got nothing, so I assume it is because I am not on Rogers, and Bell doesnt know my device?
So I Googled hard but found no info on doing a manual/forced update. Started looking around on this forum and found a bunch of useful info, but no solid answer.
Can I do a manual update that Rogers clients would receive? I wish to keep it stock with the HTC Sense like it has now.
If not, what do you suggest? I have looked at the Wiki for the device, looked into rooting, etc. I have all the links and am ready to go about it...
I found this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=659403, and see the ROM's listed. But which one am I looking for?
05) [xda-ftp] [4shared] 2.17.631.2 Rogers Canada WWE
28) [xda-ftp] [4shared] 3.05.631.7 Rogers Canada WWE
I just don't know the meaning of WWE, or the version numbers.
Thanks much!
If you don't have a data enabled SIM, you can't do this. Well you can, but you'll never be able to sign into your Google Account and hence never be able to use your phone. Can you get a data SIM from a friend or get a one day data pass from Bell?
But I have wifi, I can log into my Google account, download, apps, etc.
No, the first login screen you get to will not allow you to enable wifi so you have to login over your carrier's data.
So, if you do a factory reset or flash a new ROM, the first screen you'll get to will be the activation screen mentioned above. This is true for any stock ROM's for the myTouch/Magic. Most custom ROM's (about every one I've seen) will allow you to enable wifi at that screen or will let you skip the activation to get to the home screen, where you can enable wifi and then sign in.
I see what you are saying, maybe I'll see if one of the IT guys here can lend me their Rogers SIM card for a day. Do you think, if I was on Rogers, I could get the update fast, or do I need to wait potentially days or weeks for it to let me update. Could I hit "check for updates" and it will find it? I understand you probably don't know this, I'm just putting out feelers to where to go next.
If I really have to I will get data package for a month.
Nevermind I guess, I just tried a Rogers card and we could not get an update. After talking to IT and digging around, we found that Rogers has not even released 2.2, it only came out for Vodafone UK. I can't find any info that says it did come out for Rogers, so I assume it did not.
You could always just root.
Rogers does not have OTA (over the air) updates.
You need to go the the HTC website and download the RUU updated exe.
Oh and Rogers doesn't have an official 2.2 they only got the 2.1, so I am not sure what your trying to update to.
i just don't know the meaning of wwe, or the version numbers.
Thanks much!

This was for my T-Mobile Dell Venue pro. You will notice I did not include the 7740 update as the update was not official.
Thanks, that's the 219-33 driver cab. (33 is tmo)
One down; many, many more to go.
Wonder if anyone has the link for the 219 US and EU cabs.
Hopefully this helps. I was one of the people who waited a long time to receive my DVP after ordering it from Dell. So it came with '7392' installed. The phone is locked to AT&T, and due to their combined "support" , the first update rolled out to us was 7720. This is the cabs sent in that session. Captured with Fiddler.
Peace.
That's exactly what I was looking for in my other thread (which links to this).
Hypothetically, someone on the same level rom (7720-8107) should be able to install this over their 00-US/00-EU/33-Tmo rom and turn it into a 31-Att device.
there's no point obviously, if we got a 00-US/00-EU bundle you could hypothetically turn it into that.
What we need is someone that has previously flashed the 7704/33-Tmo FFU to try pushing this with cabsender. I say after having used the FFU as there's no way of knowing if it'll work or simply brick your device. If you've already done the FFU install you could (hopefully) do it again if it bricks it.
Strangely enough the 31/att one includes a "TMobilePageOnce.xap". the att version's the rarest, so they likely didnt bother putting much effort into recustomizing it.
Edit: wait a second, the 33/att one is different from the normal ones.
The Att one is a "1A4" submodel and the others are "2A4", flasher beware.
It's also built later, the other 219's date to aug 22nd, and the att one is oct 4th.
Could you post your firmware version? is it: 2250.1800.7720.219? I dont know offhand how to manually find it in the cab
Here ya go. This is all the info (excluding what you already know from my previous post) referencing your thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479233 (Can't reply to that one yet).
Firmware revision: 2250.1800.7720.219
Hardware revision: 112.576.2.0
Radio S/W: 2.2.50.18
Radio H/W: 8250
Bootloader ver. 7.27.1.0
8GB version
Always has been locked, and locked...
I was referring to this one specifically: Seeking anyone that hasnt updated their non tmo VP, but hey results are results.
I'm really curious what the 00-US and 00-EU ones are now, as there's a 1A4 and 2A4.
I believe both 00's are 2A4's though.
Wonder what the differences are, as your bootloader ver is the same as the other models,
I'm not aware of any firmware updates (baseband/dsp/modem) being pushed over an update.
The update bundles dont seem to contain them (or if they do they're not obvious).
It's unfortunate that the cab names include their sha-1(?) hashes, otherwise there's the (very small) possibility of simply guessing at the filename until you find it.
How did you purchase your VP exactly? Did you buy it yourself or is it a 2ndhand purchase?
I was able to get mine unlocked and I bought mine off ebay.
I just had ownership transferred to me, told them that tmo explicitly was unable to help me (as mine was tmo locked) and requested the code.
A couple phonecalls and emails later I got my code.
