Any word yet if/when Bell/Virgin will be rolling out 2.2 to Canadian users?
If I don't get it relatively soon I'll probably root. Is that more difficult to do with the Bell build?
Any suggestions from rooted Bell users?
No word yet. Canadian carriers suck at issuing updates in a timely fashion. I rooted my Legend over the summer and installed the Vodafone 2.2 build recently with no problems. For the root, you'll need to downgrade to the 1.31 RUU before you can successfully root.
Hi,
I wrote to Virgin Mobile support on November 30 and I got the following answer:
Hi there - HTC is currently working on this update and we're hoping to have it within the next couple months. We'll keep you guys up-to-date online. Stay tuned!
Lots of Love,
Virgin Mobile

Bell never answer questions I email them, HTC Legend related or not.

I made a thread about this over at howardforums. somebody responded saying Virgin is working on it and they expect it to be out in January, and if there are any delays, early February.
I got tired of waiting for Virgin to come out with Froyo, so I rooted and flashed Cyanogen on my Legend and couldn't be happier. There is a bug with voicemail notifications, but I'm sure that will be fixed soon.
When (and IF) Virgin has an update, I'll do it on my wifes phone, but the added features that Cyanogen gives is well worth it.

That's pretty brutal. I love my Legend, but I really regret buying it from Bell. I've had nothing but bad experiences with them.
Which rooting guide has the most success with the Legend?
I'm fairly new to this, so I'll have to do my homework before attempting a root.
Maybe a good December project.
i work for virgin mobile and own the legend myself.
I ask my DM, and manger almost weekly about the update only to hear that they have no idea.
I call technical support (store line/regular line) and no one there knows either.
I also check our daily updates.. daily. Only to find nothing about the legend day after day.
I've been holding my breath for the update, but i don't suggest you do the same.
Unbrand your phone by installing the WWE version and you will probably get the update faster than Bell or Telus.
Hopefully it's coming Monday.
--io
The update is likely only days away so i suppose it's a funny time to ask about debranding.
My main issue is that I don't know what rom to use from the shipped roms website... a little bit of a text explanation would be great.
I still don't know what RUU means... or what WWE is... and i've been actively doing some reading on the subject.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!
go to the wiki!!!! everything is there!!!!
Haha, that post was actually quite useful
RUU = Rom update utility
WWE = World Wide English
So all I have to do is pick the most recent WWE version and I'm good to go?
I got annoyed with the flip-flopping and waited until after the halfway mark in the month. I've rooted my phone and it works perfectly.
I found that Blayo's ROM to run extremely well on the Legend.
Sorry for bumping it again ( I've been monitoring this thread and everytime i see it bumped up, it gives me hope... but only to find out we are all asking the same thing ... WHEN?!!)
Since BELL discontinued the Legend, does this mean when (if?) Virgin releases the OTA update, BELL users like me will get the same VIRGIN update as well show up on our phone?
The post about updating it with the WWE version... if i understand it correctly, the steps are:
1. Create a gold card... i saw a thread about a manual (albeit complicated for the non-techno geek.. ) way and an automated way using a software someone wrote
2. Run the latest WWE that has been posted (this is supposed to debrand our phone so that we can "see" the SOftware Update for WWE, right)
3. Check the Software Update on the phone and i should see the Fryoyo Update. ( I assume if we apply update, the ROM Update (data) it will download on the phone will be billable...or count as your data usage)
Does this sound about right?
I'm keeping this update via WWE as my last option if the OTA does not see the light of day...for us BELL users..
At this point, i'd say it's 70/30 that bell does not get the update. Just because as you've said, it's a discontinued phone for bell. with a small install base.
Hopefully Virgin/Bell decide to push it to bell sets. I'm not sure if they'd have to prepare two versions for that though. From what i understand, we're only a few days away from finding out.
It's funny, Bell Discontinued the Legend because they couldn't keep them in stock due to HTC having a lack of stock because the Amoled screen wasn't being produced fast enough. hence why they switch to a different screen for the Legend. Most people think it was just old or selling poorly when in fact those are both false.

There was noise about an update in Mid-Jan from Virgin, Bell as far as I remember has discontinued support and it's unlikely that there's going to be an update. You won't get the OTA update unless Bell releases it. I'm rather dissapointed with the promises that keep being broken for our rather expensive service... Root your 'phone.
The procedure is :
Create a Goldcard. As you mentioned there's very easy to follow guides out there.
Downgrade your phone to an earlier version of the software. This permits rooting your phone.
Root your phone. This will allow you to install a ROM other than the Carrier's ROM.
Install either a stock ROM (WWE) or a custom ROM.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I am using Blayo's ROM, which is almost identical to the stock FroYo ROM, but with a few tweaks that just make the phone feel nicer. I would reccomend looking into some of the other ROMs as well. You may find something you like. Android's about choice and this is one great advantage of rooting your 'phone.

I'm gonna give it up to the end of Jan and if there are no updates, i'll definitely go this way... im out of space to install anything else... angry birds and talking tom are taking so much space... had to remove my talking tom to install some smaller apps.
On Facebook, the guy from Virgin told that they had problems with the update so they are doing more testing...
If you want to be up to date, I really suggest you to root your phone and try a rom. You won't lose any functions on your phone and you'll never have to wait again.

Hello there, i'm new to this flashing ROM, rooting and stuff...
In your post, it sounds easy, create a golden-SD (follow the guides), downgrade and update the WWE...
i got lost on the second step... how do you downgrade the phone? I have a VM legend 2.1 w/ update 1 and seems like VM is not giving out the update. I'm thinking going your way but don't know how to downgrade the phone.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

There's also a post later on in that thread containing an AT&T rom without the radio update (which apparently is what AT&T users are fretting about).
... and I saw Paul answer the question on Twitter too. I'm sure you can guess what the answer was...
I flashed the one with the radio update and everything seems to be fine.
Make sure you check the MD5 checksum, especially if you do the one with the radio update since a radio update could brick your device.
Yes, it does your BUT YOUR PHONE MUST BE ROOTED. I have an AT&T N1, which is rooted, and I downloaded the AT&T version at modaco and I'm currently running froyo. Loving it too.
Flash Paul's Pre-Rooted FroYo ROM & AT&T
Since it was said that flashing with the wrong radio could brick the phone I do not think it is fretting but a genuine safety check for a 500$ Device!
I did flash the full update with radio from Paul and I have no issue with the connection so far (wow so hard to say yes or no...)
So yes this rom work fine for me upgraded from cyanogen, now working into getting app2sd working (for some reason I get a PM not found)
Works fine WITH the radio included. Fret no more. Have AT&T version and did it earlier with no issues with the radio or any signal degradation.
Not sure if this it true but thought it was worth posting anyway, I have been speaking with Orange techs everyday for this last week on another matter and have been periodically asking about the update for the hero.
This morning the agent said they got an internal update about it yesterday and we can expect an update to be rolled out starting 3rd July.

Dude he is talking about a carriers update not the generic one from HTC.

me three. You'll just get loads of orange rom threads appearing. No point in having a specific (potential) answer to a problem hidden away in a thread about the generic rom.
Me 4. I've been trawling through loads of posts to find Orange updates.
I have gone back to stock ready for the official Orange 2.1. I've had a variety of ROMs for 6 months, just want an official 2.1, as I've never been happy with stability of any, or there's always one thing that doesn't work.
Gav.
Does anyone know if we will have to have the newest orange rom to get part 1 of the update, (ROM Version:2.73.61.66 released on 2010-02-04).
I never bothered with it at the time as it didnt seem to actually do anything different from the ROM they released in November along with all the other rom updates, (Rom 2.73.61.5).

I can see the reasons for keeping everything together and normally I would agree, but as this nugget of info was specific to the Orange build and I thought a separate thread so Orange customers can see it would be more useful, burying it on page 50+ of a thread about the generic (and rooted ) build didn't seem the right place for it.

Yeah right!!!!!
It'll be out when Orange sign it off and finish filling it up with their crap.
As for whether you'd need the latest ROM? yes you would. FOTA updates are deltas and only work from the most recent ROM.
Good idea!
I am normally against fragmenting topics, but I agree, when it comes to Orange UK, the ROM updates are always a bone of contention!
I now own a HTC Desire but my partner has the HERO on Orange and I am waiting anxiously for this update to get cracking on making this phone useable again.
*** My question however is this: I have paid Orange to unlock the handset to any network. Will I still have to update with an Orange ROM or will I get the 2.1 update unbranded now?? ***

I dont think you will.
My contract is coming close to an end so will technically own the phone outright so I asked HTC if it were possible to flash their generic stock rom on the phone to remove the Orange branded version and they said its not possible and I will only be able to install roms provided by Orange on the handset.
I think its time to bite the bullet and get rooting...
After all this is the last chance to do it, if we install the official version we will be locked out forever and the Hero isnt going to be getting another official update after this one.

I can't understand why people are still hanging on. Rooting is well easy and the roms better than the official releases.
do you know?
i'm running my hero with modaco 2.8 rom
will i have to revert to the stock orange rom for the update?
sorry if this has already been asked i have been on nights all week and don't have the energy to read through all these threads

Still Waiting...
I have a HTC Hero on Orange...
This whole thing is very frustrating to be honest!
I am a total noob when it comes to rooting, but I think i might just go ahead this weekend and put villain v12 custom ROM on my HTC Hero. Worth a shot¬!
Its taken them ni on a year to release this update, and when they finally release it, the people stuck on locked phones have to wait even longer!
Still, I really like HTC Devices and Google android is the shiz! So its all good!

If I were to root my Hero, would it be unlocked from the orange network? I've been researching all the methods before I jump in to rooting it, and I've come across people having to reflash to an orange rom because they weren't able to use their Hero after updating. I was looking at VillianROM 12, but I didn't want to do anything if I had to default back to Orange after my efforts. They have a wiki with step by step instructions, easy enough, I'm just kinda weary as I've never rooted before. All I want is the newest update and be able to use an O2 sim.
Today I bought a Wildfire that has a branded OS by Telstra, I don't like a lot of the extras and startup screens and junk that is there. So I rooted the phone and flashed it with that popular Puzzlerom but I didn't really like it so I recovered back to my original from a backup. Is there anyway for me to flash it with the latest official ROM from HTC or get rid of the branding on my current Telstra ROM?
So I've done some searching, I found some references to getting the official HTC ROM from Shipped-ROMS. I couldn't find anything on the website, but when looking at the website index directories I found the Buzz folder but I don't know which HTC ROM to download. I want the latest one and I'm not really sure what the difference in versions numbers are as there are so many and all of them are pre-dated before the 2.2 release and I don't know if there is a difference in Radios and I don't want to upgrade to the latest version and have my phone not picking up reception and not being able to possibly revert it as I don't know if 2.2 is rootable.
I'm also unsure If I can simply run the official WWE .exe if my phone is rooted without some kind of corruption.
If somebody could give me a quick guide or point me to a thread which could help.
In a nut shell my situation is:
Telstra Branded Firmware Version: 2.1-update1.
Software number: 1.21.841.3
Kernal: 2.6.28-543e5f81
Rooted
Need to unbrand and get latest official HTC rom.
I too am interested in a fix for this?
cheers
Turns out I'm actually really stupid.
In the Development subforum people post the official ROM and safe .zip versions of it too -_-.
Debrand Telstra Wildfire
Am curious about doing this the Telstra firmware is quite annoying not to mention god knows when Android 2.2 will become available. I have tried all the RUU update i can find none work, get either error 130 or 140... main problem seems to be the model id of my phone is incorrect. I currently have 2.1-update1, baseband 13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10, software number 1.30.841.1. Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of the Telstra firmware in favour of the standard HTC?

Its Froyo by the way
Or browse in here:
http://www.shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=windows mobile&model=Buzz
I bought a Telstra Wildfire before Xmas and used the follwoing procedure to debrand it to a stock HTC ROM.
The Wildfire came with ROM ver 1.21. I upgraded it to 1.37. See http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buzz/ for a list of the HTC roms. I used http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buz...3.55.24H_3.35.19.25_release_151892_signed.exe as it is the most recent one that can still be rooted. The next one is Froyo (http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buz...5.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe) however if you flash this one you will not be able to root it unless someone works out how to at some time in the future.
Firstly you will need to root the phone using Unrevoked (http://unrevoked.com/#wildfire).
Secondly create a goldcard (http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/)
The goldcard is necessary as, even though the phone has been rooted, the upgrade program will note that the CID in the phone is for Telstra and you are installing a non-Telstra ROM. You will get an error without the goldcard. The goldcard will override this detection and allow stock HTC and custom ROMS to be installed on your phone. Once you have installed the new stock HTC ROM using the goldcard, the goldcard will not be required for future stock ROM upgrades. It may not be required for upgrades to custom ROMS either but someone else may be able to verify this as I have not tried them.
Some people have had trouble getting the goldcard to work using thrid party SD cards. If you use the one that came with the phone you will not have trouble. The only problem with this is, as part of the unrevoked rooting, you will probably have done an nandroid backup which will dump backup files on the card so that you can restore your original ROM if you wish. I skipped this backup as shippedroms has the standard Tesltra 1.21 rom on their site (http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buz...45.55.24_3.35.15.31_release_138758_signed.exe) so that you can restore the phone to standard if required.
Thirdly, install the stock ROM (http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buz...3.55.24H_3.35.19.25_release_151892_signed.exe) with the goldcard in the phone.
This will unroot your phone but you can re-root it again as you did in the first step above.
You can upgrade to Froyo but read the posts under the Wildfire Android Development section of these forums so that you understand the disadvantages of doing so. Many have been to quick to upgarde and have been caught out!
I am going to wait until unrevoked can root Froyo before I install it.
Has anyone tested that the phone can still communicate at 850mhz after running this process?
The phone I ran this on still works at 2100mhz, but lost 850mhz, which more renders a Telstra wildfire useless (Unless you're a city dweller with ample 2100 coverage)
Is it possible that the radio firmware flashed in with the european image (which is of course designed for the 900/2100 radio) does not work properly with the hardwre in this phone? I've done a lot of searching on this subject and have come up completely empty!
Hey guys,
I bought Eclair Wildfire Telstra-branded only weeks ago, straight away rooted it and installed Sunaabh ROM (a stable, stock-like Froyo ROM). Apart from Telstra splash screen (unable to remove because we have S-On) it is debranded of course. I dunno what you mean about the radio stuff, but I live in faaaaarrrr west Sydney (Wallacia) which is pretty much country and I get 3G. Is that full NextG speed...? I really don't know!
Do NOT install official 2.2 update! It will remove root and install the new, currently unrootable HBOOT!
EDIT: What is this goldcard nonsense? Do your research! Unrevoked3 installs the Clockworkmod recovery and you can then flash ANYTHING.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using Tapatalk
I think by now I can say there's 2 ways of debranding a Wildfire A3335:
What I did (don't do this anyone else!):
* Run a stock RUU. Fully fully debrands it (No telstra logos anywhere). Also replaces the radio firmware with an eurpoean version and destroys your phone's rural (850mhz) coverage
What you did (and what I should have done):
* Just replace the ROM. Leave the Radio firmware in place: End result: You still have a phone that works on 850mhz but you've also got an annoying telstra boot screen, and there's not a damn thing that can be done about it until S-OFF is figured out for Wildfire.

The Goldcard is for people who choose to run the HTC RUU upgrade process, as described by lemming999. As you just reflashed your ROM, it is expected that you would not require a Goldcard.
As per my post above. *** Do not run this unless you really don't care about your rural coverage ***

Is it possible that you have S-OFF as a result of flashing an RUU? I assume no, because there are no RUU packages which have an "Engineering" SPL included... right?
What about SIMLOCK? True debranding should remove the CID if you can share whether you can use non Telstra SIM cards now, I may pursue the Goldcard/RUU process myself!
I don't have S-OFF at the end of this. But the HTC RUU does have the ability by some means of magic to COMPLETELY debrand the phone (including the first boot screen) and ruin your radio in the process.
So now that I've managed to restore the Telstra radio, I have have a 100% unbranded, fully working A3335 while most people tend to be stuck with the telstra logo at the SPL.
If S-OFF was obtainable on wildfire I think this process would be a lot easier but I got the desired result in the end. Reflashing the radio is pretty dodgy. I've avoid it as if it goes wrong. Your phone is a doorstop.

Yes non telstra SIM cards work. Although, I bought the phone unlocked so I don't know how this came about. as for the CID, it may remain, it may not. I don't know how to tell. There's a fairly good chance it was nuked when I flashed with the Euro RUU.
Fair enough, thanks for the detail. I'm not fussed on SIMLOCK (no vodafone coverage out here anyway), was just curious.
In regards to s-off, it is determined by SPL which AFAIK every RUU has. But again, every PUBLIC RUU would have nandlock. But there are some Wildfire users here who do have s-off, and say they don't remember how they did it (they never noticed until down the track). Odd.

This sounded like a good match for this device. I'm stuck now. Anyone have any ideas?
***old -UPDATE*** I found a Bell stock update... gonna try this out.. thanks for reading.
Hello all. Forgive me, I'm a Blackberry user and I just got an HTC Desire Z (it is locked to Bell in Canada - CDMA carrier?). I'm waiting for my unlock code to arrive (as I am on a different/GSM carrier) and I'm getting antsy to try it out.
I tried searching this forum tree using many different terms but all I've managed to find were custom ROMS and foreign official ones.
First thing I want to do is update it... I downloaded HTC Sync, which installed all the necessary drivers. (Except HTC Diag - found this online). So now I can connect it to my PC without any driver drama.
Then I went looking for an update. I found RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155556_signed.exe (but to be honest I wasn't sure if this is correct for my phone - I tried it anyway). It got so far as to reboot the phone to start the process but it then told me it wasn't the right update for my phone.
So that's where I am right now. I've been reading a lot about rooting, etc. but don't even want to go that far just yet. I just want to start off by getting a nice official software update/rom to get this thing up-to-date.
Currently, the version on this phone is 1.01.666.1 (sounds pretty old to me). I want to get rid of this blasted watermark (and I'm hoping a software update will take care of this).
Which ROM/software update is right for this phone? Any info / links would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm assuming from your initial post that you're not on Bell Canada and are wanting to use it on a different carrier? If that's the case, use gfree (see the wiki) to unlock your device (and fully root it, if you want).

Hey folks, novice user here.
Quick background: I've had the HTC Legend for over a year now, it's on the Bell network however I unlocked it the first day I had it with a $5 unlock code deal from RedFlagDeals so the phone is UNLOCKED. I've put SpeakOut! SIM cards into it, it's on a Bell one now, etc.
The thing is, I've never, ever updated the software on this thing, at all. It's on whatever basic firmware came in the HTC Legend box to begin with. About phone says: Firmware Version 2.1-update1, Kernel Version 2.6.29-9e497, Build & Software Number 2.02.666.3
So in a nutshell, can somebody help this novice user get the latest and greatest onto here? I also would like to wipe out all my contacts & account infos etc. and start from scratch
The links and acronyms are all very confusing for me since I'm just trying to learn this all at once, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have subscribed to the thread so I will get replies instantly!
Thanks in advance all!

do as he said then what you want to do is install this rom

basically becuase bell hasnt released an official 2.2 update you have to downgrade your legend (yes counter productive it seems) then root it(jailbreak it) so you can install custom ROMS which is basically android 2.2 plus lots of extra tweeks
